The Redbirds enter as one of only four men’s tennis teams in the Missouri

Valley Conference this season. Joining them in the conference for the 2015

campaign are Drake, Southern Illinois and Wichita State University.

Illinois State posted a 1-3 record in conference play last season. Juniors Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas paired up to win a team-high two

doubles matches last season in conference, while Torrellas tied for the team-lead in conference singles wins

with two.

Despite ISU’s 2014 conference record, the team hopes a restructuring of the

conference and the familiarity with other team’s players will help them improve on

that mark.

2014-15 Season Preview The Illinois State men’s tennis team looks to the

2015 spring season as one filled with promise and opportunity. After posting an 8-13 (1-3) record last year, second-year head coach Mark Klysner is looking for the

five returning upperclassmen to lead the squad to an even better mark this time around.

The Redbirds will rely on players like senior Jacob Wilson, who led the team last spring with 18

tournament singles wins and 21 overall singles wins. Illinois State will also look to junior Rolando Torrellas

to continue where he picked off last spring, ending his sophomore campaign winning six of seven singles

matches en route to an 18-14 finish.

Sophomore Urh Krajnc Domiter is another Redbird to keep an eye on this spring, wrapping up this past fall season with a team-leading 5-2 record. Close behind Domiter was fellow teammate and sophomore Dylan Steffens who showed a lot of upside coming out of the

fall season with a 4-2 mark.

New to the team this year are freshmen Andreas Boers, Christoffer Greve and Rory Samuels. Seeing limited

action in the fall, Klysner will rely on these newcomers to take advantage of the experience and direction of

the upperclassmen to make greater strides this spring season.

Given the talent and potential in this group of men, fans should be optimistic about this year’s Illinois State men’s tennis squad and eager to see these Redbirds in action.

Coaching Success Before Illinois State, Mark Klysner coached the men’s and women’s teams at Youngstown State. During the 2012-13 campaign, Klysner led both squads to a combined 28 wins and achieved more victories in a single sea-son than each team had in over a decade.

Prior to Klysner’s arrival, the YSU men’s tennis team had won just three conference matches in nine years. In his three seasons, Klysner helped the Penguins win 10 conference matches. He also helped guide three players on the YSU women’s tennis team to 42 consecutive match wins in 2013, with the trio finishing 21-0 against conference opponents.

Klysner also acted as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis team at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2009-10, where he saw the women’s team win the regular-season conference title and the men finish in second place at the Northeast Conference Tournament.

In his first season as head coach at Illinois State, Klysner guided the men’s tennis team to an overall 8-13 record and a 1-3 conference mark. With year one under his belt, Klysner and his more experienced squad are looking to achieve bigger and better things in 2014-15.

KARIN BONE ATHLETICS STUDY CENTERThe Redbird academic support services staff understand the daily challenges student-athletes have to balance because the staff includes members who are former college student-athletes and coaches themselves. With the unbridled support of Redbird coaches and athletics administrators, the study center staff help student-athletes coordinate the demands they face athletically, academically, socially and personally. Beyond their own care, concern and constant availability to help, the academic support staff’s greatest asset is the comfortable, computerized Karin Bone Study Center. That’s where programs like targeting, career development, community-service projects, counseling and assistance for Redbird student-athletes from all 19 sports take place daily.

In addition to departmental and college on-campus academic recognition, the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll and conference scholar-athlete teams, Redbird student-athletes have achieved:

• 22 Bone Scholars (Illinois State’s top academic scholarship on campus).

• 40 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors.• more than 2,000 hours of student-athlete community

service annually.• A record 3.15 athletics department grade-point average

was set in fall 2011, and equalled in spring 2012.

KARIN BONE ATHLETICS STUDY CENTERACADEMIC ADVISEMENTThree academic advisors from the university’s Academic Advisement Center work specifically with student-athletes to ensure progress toward a degree. As former Illinois State student-athletes, those advisors understand the challenges faced by their counterparts today.

CAREER DEVELOPMENTWorking with other areas of the university, academic support personnel are developing career preparation and career-enhancement programs. Those programs include: career assessment assistance, resource materials, resumé writing, summer jobs in related fields, internships and externships.

TARGETINGStudent-athletes who enter the university are provided one-on-one academic assistance at the start of their college careers. This provides the best chance for a good start, as well as the implementation of an academic plan that best suits each individual student-athlete.

TUTORINGThe Karin Bone Athletics Study Center staff helps obtain qualified tutors to meet unique student-athlete needs.

Director of Athletics Quality facility upgrades from Redbird Arena to Duffy Bass Field to Hancock Stadium provide a visual picture of the quality leadership Larry Lyons has shown during more than 28 years with Illinois State athletics, leading up to his May 2013 appointment as Director of Athletics. When Hancock Stadium, the new “front door” to the

Illinois State University campus and Bloomington-Normal community, opened in 2013, it will be the latest and largest in a long line of Redbird Athletics facility improvements and other projects with the Lyons’ touch. Lyons’ creative talents in finance, facilities and administrative leadership have enhanced opportunities for Illinois State University student-athletes to achieve their goals and reach for their dreams. In the process, those student-athletes have won conference championships and earned academic degrees at the highest levels in more than 100 years of Redbird Athletics history. Beyond facilities, Lyons’ leadership has resulted in financial stability through the enhancement and quality expenditure of all five principal forms of funding; student fees, development dollars, income fund, tuition waivers plus branding and ticket revenue. Lyons has been the athletics department’s liaison to the University for human resources, administrative and fee-related projects. Also serving as campus representative to the ISU Foundation Board of Directors for three terms, the certified public accountant became known throughout college athletics for his fiscal skills. His ability to craft winning competitive bids for post-season tournaments, both conference and NCAA, has provided the competitive “home court” advantage for many quality Redbird teams, and has helped Illinois State earn a national reputation for hosting significant competitions. Additionally, Lyons has served as the liaison to the Weibring Golf Club, supervised the athletic training, athletic equipment and the strength and conditioning units, while providing administrative leadership for men’s and women’s golf and baseball. He also assisted with administrative leadership roles with the football and men’s basketball programs and was instrumental in the fostering the current apparel and equipment contract with Nike. Enhancing the fan experience goes hand-in-hand with supporting student-athlete success, and the opening of Hancock Stadium, Redbird fans will enjoy a facility focused on the latest in comfort and service. Arriving on campus during the construction of Redbird Arena (opening in 1989), Lyons has also had leadership roles in several major facility construction and renovation projects, including the Kaufman Football Building (2000), the Owen Strength and Conditioning Center (2005), the Hancock Stadium turf replacement (2007), video scoreboard installations in Redbird Arena and Hancock Stadium (2007), the Gregory Street Tennis Courts (2008), the Redbird Arena Media Room (2010), the Redbird Arena Video Production Suite (2010), and the Franke Family men’s basketball locker room (2012). Lyons’ involvement on campus has included a host of committees and task forces including his current efforts with the Campus Master Plan committee. The renovations to Hancock Stadium provide a new front door to the ISU campus and Bloomington-Normal community. Besides benefiting the community, the renovations to Hancock Stadium give Redbird fans a new experience on game days, while improving competitive opportunities and providing room for future growth. Lyons earned a bachelor’s degree from Illinois in 1978 and a second bachelor’s degree in accounting from Illinois State in 1986. Lyons and his wife, Maureen reside in Normal, Illinois. They have two grown children, Matt and Kristin.

Dr. Larry DietzPresident Larry Dietz became the 19th president of Illinois State University March 22, 2014. He came to the University in June 2011 as vice president for Student Affairs. He led the Division of Student Affairs, which includes the Dean of Students Office, Student Health Services, Student Counseling

Center, University Housing Services, Disability Concerns, Career Center, Campus Dining Services, Campus Recreation, Bone Student Center and Braden Auditorium, Student Affairs Information Technology, Health Promotion and Wellness, and the University Police, as well as other units. He is also a tenured associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations. Previously, he served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) for 10 years. Dietz also served as special assistant to the chancellor at SIUC and as a tenured associate professor in educational administration and higher education. Prior to his tenure there, he served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, among other leadership positions, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City for 15 years, and in leadership positions at Iowa State University for 13 years. Dietz earned a Ph.D. in higher education administration and his master’s degree in higher education and student personnel from Iowa State University and his bachelor’s degree in political science from Southern Illinois University. He attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University, a Fulbright International Education Seminar for Administrators in Germany and the Harvard Management Development Program. Dietz was selected to represent the American Universities Iraq Consortium on a panel with Prime Minister Al-Malaki and represented SIUC at the Iraq Education Initiative in Baghdad. He had responsibility for SIUC’s campus in Japan and has negotiated agreements with institutions in China, Malaysia, Kuwait, Germany and the Czech Republic.
