    F inancial Aid

There are two types of financial aid:

Merit-basedmoney offered because of outstandingacademic performance or special talent. Family income

is NOT a factor. (Most often this comes from the college itself.)

Need-basedmoney offered because family incomefalls within specific low-income guidelines.

    (ALL federal aid is need-based.)

    36/42

    Need-based aid:

FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid.) www.fafsa.edu.gov. Available beginning January 1steach year. FAFSA MUST BE

SUBMITTED EACH YEAR TO QUALIFY FOR ANY NEED-BASED AID.

    Cal Grants

For California residents only. Must be attending a

CA college/university. Pick up GPA verification form from Counselor

    that must be mailed in.

ScholarshipsNeed-based scholarships can come from thecollege itself or from outside sources.

CSS Profile- an online application that some colleges use todetermine need-based aid amounts. To see if the college you are applying

to uses the CSS Profile, go to https://student.collegeboard.org/css-

    The Net Price Calculator

The Net Price Calculatoris a very helpful toolthat you can use to estimate your net price

to attend a particular college or university.

Net priceis the difference between the stickerprice ( full cost) to attend a specific college,

minus any grants and scholarships for which

    you may be eligible.

By recent federal law, all college/universities MUST have a net price

calculator available. Check your college website.
