Naked Logan suspect’s mental health checked

Cameron Shenk, the 26-year-old Harvard student accused of carrying out a bizarre, naked attack at Logan International Airport on Nov. 22, was un-dergoing a psychiatric exam, delaying his arraignment, said Suff olk District Attorney’s of-fi ce spokesman Jake Wark.

Shenk, an economics student at Harvard Extension School, is charged with at-tempted murder, assault and lewd conduct for allegedly stripping naked in a women’s restroom, climbing into a drop ceiling, then falling to the fl oor and attacking an elderly man.

Outside a City Hall hearing Monday, Boston taxi drivers said they were upset with rideshare companies like UberX and Lyft, which they view as unregulated competi-tors that are unfairly cutting into their business.

The rideshare companies said they offer a cheaper, bet-ter alternative to cabs.

Tiffany Mitchell, a man-ager for Top Cab and City Cab, said rideshare services have cut as much as $200,000 of the value of a Boston taxi medallion in the past two

years. A medallion for one of Boston’s 1,800 taxis can cost between $500,000 and $700,000.

Mitchell says Uber allows drivers to work with its ser-vice who have been barred from driving taxis.

Uber spokesman Taylor Bennett said the company’s background checks are more rigorous than City Hall’s taxi licensing.

Mark Nemeskal, a 55-year-old Lyft driver from Peabody whose day job is driving a truck, said taxis are running away from market competi-tion. “We’re here,” he said. “We’re not going away.”

Boulos Kamel, a 57-year-old West Roxbury resident who has been driving a city-licenced cab for nine years, said rideshare regulations should mirror taxi rules.

“The cabs should reinvent themselves,” she said. “We need competition. The more options for transportation, the better.”

Peter Cohan, a visiting lec-turer at Babson College, said companies like Uber and Lyft have a clever business model: their operations are “asset light” and specialize in con-necting people and services.

An advisory commission exam-ining the salaries of state law-makers has recommended rais-ing pay for the governor, House speaker and Senate president.

The commission recom-mended the governor’s salary rise to $185,000 from $151,800, making it the 10th highest gubernatorial salary in the na-tion. The governor should also be given a $65,000 housing al-lowance, since Massachusetts’ governor does not stay in a state-owned and maintained residence.

Ira Jackson, chairman of

the commission and a dean at UMass Boston, said it was im-portant to keep the governor’s salary competitive to attract strong candidates.

Some 1,254 state employees are paid more than outgoing Gov. Deval Patrick, said Jackson.

The commission recom-mended increasing the Senate president and House speaker salaries to $175,000 from $102,279.

The commission also rec-

ommended eliminating legisla-tive per diem stipends, which Jackson called “simply indefen-sible” and “arbitrary.”

The commission recom-mended replacing the stipends with increased office expenses for legislators.

Enacting the commission’s recommendations would cost the state about $934,000 annu-ally.

It is now up to state law-makers to adopt or reject the recommendations. State House News Service reported Monday that Governor-elect Charlie Baker would “probably veto” the proposed salary increases if they came before him until the state’s financial situation improved.

Young Martin Richard’s kindness perseveres with marathon team

Propelled by the loving spirit of a little boy he once knew, Dorchester’s Steve Datish will soon begin training for the 2015 Boston Marathon.

“He was a compassionate kid. Whether he was playing sports or with his siblings, he never complained, and he al-ways had a smile on his face,” Datish said of 8-year-old Martin Richard, who was one of three people killed when twin ex-plosions rang out through the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Datish is one of 59 charity runners on the roster for Team

Boston. Team MR8 will start training for the Boston Marathon, guided by the legacy of the 2013 tragedy’s youthful victim.

MR8, which will represent The Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation at next year’s race. Though an avid runner, it will be the first time the 45-year-old software consultant tackles the Boston Marathon.

A father of two boys, ages 11 and 13, Datish has been a close friend of the Richard family since he moved to Dorchester 14 years ago.

“They welcomed us to the neighborhood. Our children were very close in age. Martin was very close to our child. Be-ing so close to them, and see-ing how they responded to this tragedy… it’s the least I can do,” said Datish.

Datish hopes to raise $7,500 for the foundation, formed by Richard’s parents to aid local education and athletics. Last year, Team MR8 raised $1.25 million for the charity.

“Either they’ve expe-rienced a similar, painful loss of a family member, or they are folks who were so touched by the Richard fam-ily’s perseverance and deter-mination to honor their son,” Richard family spokesman Larry Marchese said of the runners.

Global stock markets fell on Monday as slowing factory activity in China and Europe added to worries about weaker global growth. Apple shares dropped, while the yen briefly hit a seven-year low after Moody’s cut its rat-ing on Japan.

Oil prices rebounded after hitting five-year lows, lifted by data suggesting that tum-bling prices may have started affecting drilling activity in the fast-growing U.S. shale oil industry.

The day’s data added to investor caution. Chinese purchasing managers data showed manufacturing

slowed in November, suggest-ing the world’s second-big-gest economy was continuing to lose momentum. Factory activity also slowed in France and Germany.

This artist really knows how to “mask” the smell of sneakers.

California-based artist Gary Lockwood, aka Freehand Profit, turns kicks into gas masks as a part of a project called “Sneakerhead.” The 31-year-old explains why “duality” is at the heart of his “sole” style.

What’s your method in mask-making?Each mask I create is one-of-a-kind. I’ll never use the same shoe twice (a different color of that shoe maybe, but always constructed in a new way). They all start seemingly the same with the destruction of a coveted pair of sneakers. Then over the course of six weeks to six months, depending on the mask, I piece together the puzzle — backward.

Why did you start making them in the fi rst place?I’ve been a lifelong artist and hip-hop head. In 2010, I started a year-long, daily creative project called “MASK365.” For it I created, drew and painted a

Secret No. 1: Wake up early and work out

Every day is a marathon for me, as I receive nearly 3,000 emails and have several meetings and conference calls, not to mention that I spend the majority of the day trading stocks and making video lessons. By waking up

between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., I’m able to get important tasks done before everyone else wakes up and starts bothering me. I’ve also learned that getting in a 30-minute workout in the early morning helps alleviate stress and

allows me to work more effi ciently over the course of my long days.

Secret No. 2: Shun TV and video games

I know far too many people who spend enormous amounts of time trying to relax by watching TV and playing video games, so much so that it sucks up their time and effi ciency. Don’t plop yourself down on the couch with two handfuls of junk food and give in to the temptation. If you do want to watch TV, do something productive during the commercial breaks.

Secret No. 3: Prioritize tasksWe are most effi cient early in the day, so that’s when I prioritize my important and favorite projects. Despite the pull to reply to emails, text messages and social media within minutes of receiv-ing them, most are not pressing, so you can and should respond later. Focus on your most complex projects and things that you’re most passionate about fi rst, and only afterward concern yourself with dealing with questions and com-mentary from others.

Is it cool for Melissa Rivers to use her dead mom’s Twitter account?

I’ve got a social media etiquette quandary for you: What’s the policy for making use of a loved one’s Twitter account af-ter he or she has passed away? What if that person is a hugely famous comedy pioneer? Fans of Joan Rivers got quite a shock over the holiday weekend when the comedienne starting tweeting again three months after she died. It turns out it was just her daughter, Melissa Rivers, taking over the ac-count. “I finally figured out my mom’s password,” she tweeted.

Since then, Melissa has been posting mostly about trips to the theater with her son, Cooper, and the same tweets have been duplicat-ing to her own account. But here’s the thing: Joan’s Twit-ter account has 2.22 million followers, while Melissa’s has just 231,000. She does know you can change the display name on a Twitter account, right? And the photo? It won’t even affect the follower count, if that’s what she’s worried about. And you don’t have to make it look like Joan Rivers is tweeting from be-yond the grave. This just feels a little on the icky side to me. But hey, we’re in a brave new world here.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is a lover, not a fi ghter

Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. was just try-ing to have a nice night out at NYC’s Tao nightclub recently, but some young punks nearly ruined all his fun. “Cuba was sitting at this table hitting on girls all night,” a source tells the NY Daily News. “These four rich kids, who were maybe 21 or 22, started hitting on these girls at the promoter’s table and [the girls] weren’t hav-ing it.” A fight soon broke out between said promoter and the young upstarts, but Gooding “just sat there doing nothing,” according to the source. “Cuba barely reacted while girls were getting shoved around.” And when security finally had the situation under control, “he got back to being all skeezy and hitting on girls.”

John Boyega knows how to handle the haters

The first face to pop up in the new “Star Wars” trailer was that of British actor John Boyega, apparently donning an Imperial Stormtrooper uniform. Granted, we know basically nothing about the plot of the new film or what his character is doing dressed like that, but some people already have a problem with it. Racist people, mostly. Well, Boyega is taking the high road, if cheek-ily. He posted a thank you for the massive outpouring of fan support, and at the end tossed in a pitch-perfect, “To whom it may concern… Get used to it.”

Changing the way we see Iran Memoir. In “The Lonely War,” Nazila Fathi uses her personal narrative to dispel cliches and stereotypes.

NAZILA FATHI HAS BEEN AN IRANIAN CORRESPONDENT FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

Serving as the Iranian corre-spondent for The New York Times — among other publica-tions — has put Nazila Fathi’s life in danger many times over the past decade, but she never questioned her choice to be-come a journalist.

“You become so over-whelmed by the events that somehow you don’t feel the fear,” she says. She adds that growing up in Iran during the Iranian Revolution made her accustomed to living in a fear-ful climate, and she didn’t real-ize just how stressful her envi-ronment was until she left the country.

Fathi’s new memoir, “The

Lonely War” (out Dec. 9), chronicles the aftermath of the revolution and how it affected her personally. The way Fathi weaves Iran’s narrative with her own makes for a compel-ling read. She tells us that one reason she wrote the book is to break down stereotypes people have about Iran.

Such stereotyping was evi-dent even as she finalized the book’s cover: “The publisher said people wouldn’t know this was a book about Iran unless

we put a w o m a n wearing a chador on the c o v e r , ” Fathi says. “Whenev-er someone wants to use an im-age to rep-resent Iran, it’s a picture of a woman in a chador. This is such a

cliche. ... You hardly ever come across a woman who lives here, in a free country, and wears the chador.” In the end, Fathi took her publisher’s advice and she’s ultimately happy with the cover. “I hope that once people read the book they learn that these are not true perceptions of the country and its people,” she says.

Another misconception Fathi says people in the West have is that nuclear weapons

are the most important issue to the Iranian people. “They don’t care about it. This is the most important issue in America’s foreign policy and Israel’s for-eign policy, but for Iranians, it’s a minor issue,” she says.

Instead, she says, they care about gaining more personal freedoms. As the middle class has grown, Fathi says the people see freedoms that exist elsewhere and they want them, too.

When Iranian pop singer Morteza Pashaei died of cancer Nov. 14 at 30 years old, thou-sands of Iranians flooded the streets all across Iran to mourn him. “Women, who are not per-mitted to sing in public, were singing his songs,” Fathi says. “It’s a sign that the younger generation is vying for more personal freedom. They’re look-ing for an excuse to show their solidarity.”

New Mental Health Concentrations

Are you interested in a career in mental health counseling? If so, now is a great time to begin your training. Within this expanding field, there are increasing opportunities to specialize. Cambridge College offers Master’s degrees and Post-Master’s Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies towards mental health counseling licensure. Beginning in the fall of 2014, several new program concentrations are launching.

Rehabilitation Counseling

The aim of the Rehabilitation Counseling concentration is to allow you to become eligible for both Licensure in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC) and to simultaneously be trained in Rehabilitation Counseling, enabling you to pursue national Certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor and to be licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a Rehabilitation Counselor. This program ties together two fields, allowing you to comprehensively serve the needs of individuals returning

to work, dealing with intellectu-al, emotional and/or physical challenges, veterans facing complex mental health and vocational rehabilitation issues, and those seeking to work in Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).

Pastoral Counseling

The new concentration in Pastoral Counseling is offered for those interested in developing the knowledge, skills and training needed to provide effective and informed counseling services from a spiritual and/or faith-based perspective. The program emphasizes inclusive, interfaith dialogue and cooperative and constructive interaction between individuals of different faiths and/or humanistic or spiritual beliefs. Through classroom experiences, you will develop a greater awareness of the role spirituality may play in your clients’ lives, and a better understanding of the impact of spiritual and faith-based perspectives on the counseling process. Throughout the curriculum, you will have opportunities for reflective thought, applied learning, and personal and professional growth.

Holistic Counseling

The Holistic Counseling concentration is offered to students interested in exploring Eastern and Western as well as modern and ancient ways of understanding psychology and human behavior. The program aims to integrate knowledge from the study of three levels of experience: body, mind, and spirit. As a student, you will review traditional Western and Eastern ways of understanding, and will examine how different perspectives fit with new information emerging from neuroscience. In creating a holistic learning experience, you will develop an experiential practice (e.g. meditation, tai-chi or yoga) of your own to complement your academic work.

Is there anything you like about the holidays?I do like hanging out in Central Park under various bridges, and sometimes I go to the ice rink late at night when no one is there.

What do you want for Christmas?I’d like a nice doormat because my dog Max keeps tracking in stuff from Whoville, and it’s a giant mess. And maybe some security cameras so I can keep watch over my cave when I’m not there.

online that you and the mayor of Whoville don’t get along. Is that true?Pretty much anything deal-ing with Whoville, I disdain. They’re just so freaking friendly, it makes my fur crawl.

I’ve heard you’ve met a Who named CindyLou.CindyLou is the tiniest mem-ber of Whoville. She’s very precocious. She has giant eyes and is just full of questions. I don’t get why questions are necessary. They love to sing as well, which is another thing I don’t care about. And they eat all these Whoville specialties, like roast beef and lots of sweets. My sweet taste buds are pretty much nonexistent. I like sour, hot and moldy.

Interesting. What are you eating for dinner tonight?I have a giant bowl of warm mayonnaise sitting out, which I’m going to enjoy through a straw.

MURRAY ACCUSED OF BEDDING FORMER TEAMMATE’S WIFE

Running backs are the worst. At least that’s what 2014 has taught us.

Cowboys running back De-Marco Murray was seen as the exception to the “all-running-backs-have-issues” rule earlier this year when he ripped off eight consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing AND seemed like a decent guy while doing it. But as we all know by now, assuming that any particular pro athlete lives a minister’s lifestyle that is free of an ungodly amount of sex and steroids is about as advisable as believing that all politicians have your best interests at heart.

If you haven’t yet heard, Murray’s former teammate at Oklahoma, fellow running back Brennan Clay, accused Murray of sleeping with his wife.

“So DeMarco Murray was having an affair with my wife … I’m done,” Clay tweeted. “@demarcomurray and @gina_edagos0126 … 1 has a baby momma and she has 2 kids … I’m disgusted.”

Affairs are nothing new in the sports world, but this one is painful for several reasons. One, it’s clear that Murray “won” in whatever rivalry the two had on the field. Murray rushed for 2,685 yards at Oklahoma and Clay, who

more or less replaced Murray as the Sooners’ feature back in 2011 never broke 1,000 yards in a single season. Oh, and Murray plays in the NFL these days and Clay likely

spends his Sundays setting off the Lunk Alarm at Planet Fitness.

Second, this is a classic case of the senior stealing the freshman guy’s woman. Nothing burns worse than that for a man. You’re just helpless as the freshman.

Third, and I suppose most important, is that Murray has a “baby mama” who is devoted to daddy DeMarco. That baby mama is actress Heidi Mueller, who you know from the great mid-2000s documentary “Diva Dog: Pit Bull on Wheels” and the famed NBC TV series “Who Wants to Marry My Dad?”

Mueller’s twitter account, which features an avatar of herself, her daughter and Murray, has been silent since Clay accused Murray of the dirty deed.

Predators (16-5-2)The Predators are tied with the Blues for the most points in the deep Western Confer-ence. Pekka Rinne is back in a major way for Nashville as he leads the NHL in wins with 16 on the year.

Lightning (16-6-2)Tampa Bay’s goal-diff erential is the second-best in the NHL (plus-21) and it leads the league with 85 goals scored. A healthy Ben Bishop makes Tampa Bay a true Stanley Cup contender.

’Hawks (15-8-1)The Blackhawks have won their last three games and they are also 8-2-0 in the past 10 games. Of note, Chicago has allowed the second few-est amount of goals in the NHL (48).

Canucks (16-7-1)We keep expecting to place the Canucks deeper on this list but they have played well. They just began a brutal seven-game road trip that is highlighted by games in Pittsburgh and Montreal.

Blues (16-6-2)The Blues are playing solid hockey with a goal-diff erential of plus-15. Brian Elliott is out indefi nitely with a lower-body injury, so the Blues signed future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur to a tryout.

Islanders (17-7-0)The Islanders are making sure that their last season on Long Island is a memorable one. They are 9-2-0 at Nassau Coli-seum and 8-2-0 in their last 10 games. They will see St. Louis later this week.

Flames (15-8-2)There isn’t a bigger surprise in the league this season than the success of the Flames. We keep waiting for them to fall back but they just keep on winning. They begin a three-game homestand Tuesday.

Ducks (14-6-5)Like the other California teams in the NHL, Anaheim had a rough month. The Ducks are 4-3-3 in their last 10 games and are coming off a 6-4 loss to San Jose on Saturday and a 4-1 loss to the Blackhawks last Friday.
