Relatively glitch-free day for voters

New York’s Board Of Elections enjoyed a relatively smooth day on Tuesday, except for a minor issue with some voters not knowing their polling locations had been changed since the 2012 election.

1Location problems “There has been a lot of confusion

at the polls with people not knowing where they need to be,” said Jon Sherman, a volunteer at voting rights organization Election Protec-tion. “Because it’s the city, there are a ton of [polling centers] and they have to change frequently since there is a cap for each location.”

2Misinformation problemsAnother issue arose when

New York’s progressive Work-ing Families Party sent out an e-mail alert warning on Tuesday to voters that ballots had been set up to show gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino twice, potentially prompting confused voters to “mistakenly vote twice for governor thinking they were voting straight down the WFP line.”

New Yorkers have spoken, and have re-elected incum-bent Democrats to the state’s top positions.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was re-elected governor with new Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul. He defeated Republican candidate Rob Astorino with about 70 per-cent of the vote, according to unofficial preliminary numbers on Tuesday night (as of press time).

The current governor cast his ballot Tuesday morning in Mount Kisco, in Westchester County, along with his girlfriend, Sandra Lee.

Cuomo’s re-election campaign reminded vot-ers he balanced the state’s

budget four years in a row, and created more than 440,000 jobs. Cuomo intends to move forward his Women’s Equality Act, which proposes equal pay, abortion rights and anti-discrimination measures.

Cuomo said Tuesday “we began our journey four years ago” to return the state to “fiscal stabil-ity and responsibility” and “restore New York as the progressive capital of the nation.”

Tuesday night, Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at Cuo-mo’s re-election party, say-ing New York voters today realized grassroot Demo-cratic efforts, and sent a message that “ultraconser-vatives” and Tea party can-didates “are never going to win the day in New York state.”

Incumbent Michael Grimm, who has also been indicted on 20 federal counts, including fraud, was projected to win re-election to a third term as U.S. Congressman repre-senting Staten Island and Brooklyn’s 11th District with about 52 percent of the vote, early numbers showed (about 45 percent reporting). After years of construc-tion and delays, Fulton Center will officially open to commuters this coming weekend.

MTA and federal transit officials will hold an opening ceremony for the transit center on Sunday. MTA Chairman & CEO Thomas F. Prendergast, New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco and MTA Capital Construc-tion President Michael Horodniceanu are set to attend the opening.

The $1.4 billion project, which promises to better connect 11 subway lines, was originally scheduled to finish in 2007.

The center serves the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, J, Z and R lines, as well as the N on late nights.

Serial burglar hits string of 10 apartments

A cat burglar has been emptying apartments in the East Village of their expensive electronics, according to the NYPD.

The serial burglar is wanted in connection with at least 10 East Village burglaries dating

back to July 25.According to police,

the unidentifi ed man, who appears to be in his 20s, typically enters residences through windows and then removes electronic goods before fl eeing.

Since the July incident, the man reportedly burglarized four homes in August, two on the same night in mid-September and three more in Octo-

Republicans struck pow-erful first blows in U.S. congressional elections on Tuesday in their drive to control the U.S. Senate and dramatically tip the bal-ance of power away from President Barack Obama and his Democrats.

Obama’s low job ap-proval rating, partisan grid-lock in Washington and a U.S. economy that is not growing broadly enough to help many in the middle class were major issues con-fronting voters in elections for 36 senators, 36 state governors and all 435 mem-bers of the House of Repre-sentatives.

In the Senate races, Re-publican challenger Tom Cotton defeated Democrat-

Obama. The White House tried to play down the prospect of sharp changes in strategy after the election.

A Vatican bioethics official on Tuesday condemned the death by assisted suicide of Brittany Maynard, a ter-minally ill 29-year-old who ended her life over the weekend, as an undignified “absurdity.”

“This woman [took her own life] thinking she would die with dignity, but this is the error,” Monsi-gnor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, head of the Pontifi-cal Academy for Life, told

the Italian news agency Ansa.

Maynard, who was diagnosed in January

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson reached a plea deal to charges of abusing his 4-year-old son that would see him avoid any jail time, reports said on Tuesday.

Peterson was scheduled

to appear in a Texas court on Tuesday to face a child abuse charge for striking his son with a thin tree branch as a form of punishment, leaving the child bruised.

With estimated earnings of $115 million, more than double what she pulled in last year, Beyonce is the highest paid woman in music in 2014, Forbes magazine said on Tuesday.

The huge sum, most of which came from her world tour, propelled Beyonce, 33, from fourth place last year and put her firmly ahead of pop star Taylor Swift, 24, with $64 million, who jumped up one spot from last year

Wednesday marks a mile-stone: A film is being re-leased on film. “Interstel-lar” hits theaters today — just not even close to all of them. That may seem odd, given that it’s one of the most highly anticipat-ed movies of the year: the latest from brainy block-buster-maker Christopher Nolan, with Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

Yet the only theaters getting it are the ones that never threw out their film projectors. Starting today, you can see “Interstellar” in good, old-fashioned, grainy and dangerously combustible 35mm as well as super-sized 70mm IMAX.

The rest of the country’s multiplexes — the ones that converted entirely to digital, which is nearly all of them — don’t get it until Friday.

This bold move is a strong push-back against the digital wave that has almost entirely consumed modern movie watching. In 2010, most theaters switched — at great cost — to DCP (Digital Cinema Package), a purely com-puterized system. Instead of bulky, expensive-to-ship film reels, movies were mere files with a password to unlock. Unlike film, they would never scratch, rot or burn up. All a projectionist

had to do was hit a button.But the files could get

corrupted or deleted. And while it’s nice to have spar-klingly clean images, they can be too bright. As Quen-tin Tarantino — like Nolan, another celluloid zealot — once put it, digital pro-jection is like “watching television in public.”

“Interstellar” indeed looks great on 70mm. The film is about McConaughey and Hathaway searching through the cosmos for a planet to replace the dying Earth, and its early scenes on Earth are sometimes impossibly dark.

But once it gets to space, you can not only see the majesty, but feel it. None of it looks digital, not even the planets our heroes visit.

Nolan shot one of them in Iceland, and it re-ally does resemble an alien land. Beyond that, it even looks real. It looks like film.

Christopher Nolan isn’t the only one still holding the torch for celluloid. Quentin Tarantino will be releasing 70mm prints of his next fi lm, “The Hateful Eight.” Two years ago Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” was shipped out in 70mm prints, and his new “In-

herent Vice” played the New York Film Festival on 35mm. Others include Wes Anderson, Rian Johnson (“Looper”) and Alex Ross Perry (“Listen Up Philip”).

The building’s resi-dents use the units as their primary homes rather than as pieds-a-terre, Lewis said. Sales launched in Feb-ruary 2013 and the three non-penthouse units sold

very quickly, Lewis said. The building was built

in 1924 and originally served as a showroom and headquarters of a fabric importer. In 2011, Mitchell bought the building from the Plumbers Union for $13 million and converted it into condos.

Addicted to your phone? There’s an app for that

Gadget addicts know this too well: No amount of willpower will ever get our prying eyes and hyperac-tive thumbs away from our smartphone screens. So how about an app that will break the cycle for us?

Offtime blocks certain phone features like email, texts or social media for set periods of the day. But it doesn’t block everything, or pick random apps to lock down.

There are three home games left for Jets fans to voice their displeasure over a 1-8 season that will mark a fourth straight season without the play-offs. And now, there are three billboards placed in prime New Jersey loca-tions to do the same ex-act thing.

Metro New York re-ported on Sunday that FireJohnIdzik.com had reached its stated goal of raising $10,000 to pur-chase a billboard near MetLife Stadium to pro-

mote their stated pur-pose of seeing general manager John Idzik fired. Now they’ve secured not only a location near the stadium for the static bill-board message, but also two digital billboards nearby.

According to the four founders of the FireJohn Idzik.com website, there will be one static bill-board right on Route 80 at Exit 65 in New Jersey, just a few minutes away from the Meadowlands. The static billboard will be up

in time for the Jets’ final two home games and will come down in mid-January. There will also be two digital billboards up for a similar period of time along Route 3, located within a half-mile of the stadium.

“This is not a story about a bunch of people wasting their money, as some in the media would like to portray it,” site co-founder Jason Koep-pel told Metro. “This is a story about changing the face of fan activism in America. The billboards are nothing but a symbol that we rallied behind to show [owner] Woody Johnson that Jets fans now have an organized voice.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin confirmed cornerback Prince Amu-kamara, in the midst of a breakout season, is done for the season with a torn biceps.

“I feel very badly for Prince Amukamara, particularly the quality of the year he was having, then to have this hap-pen,” Coughlin said in his conference call Monday. “He will recover, do well and come back, and we move on.”

The Giants are increasingly thin in the secondary. Cornerbacks Trumaine McBride and Walter Thurmond were already out for the season.
