Attempting to reframe the de-bate over the city’s top prior-ities, Rob Ford dropped transit from the equation by saying those who don’t have jobs don’t need it anyway.

“Every day people come to me and say: ‘Rob, what’s the No. 1 issue?’ And I say, ‘It’s the economy. It’s jobs. It’s prop-erty taxes. It’s transit.’ But folks, it’s the economy and jobs. Because if you haven’t got a job, you won’t need tran-sit,” Ford said during a news conference at his Etobicoke campaign headquarters on Tuesday. “If you cannot leave your house to go to or look for

a job, what’s the sense of hav-ing transit?”

Going unmentioned were the thousands of unemployed people — including seniors, students and disabled resi-dents — who use transit every day to get around.

The mayoral race has large-ly focused on transit since the beginning. Top candidates have sparred at debates over talking points such as build-ing LRTs versus subways and when and how to build a downtown relief line.

“When people ask this question, my opponents have very little to say. They have very little to say when it comes to the economy and how they’re going to find ef-ficiencies and keep your taxes low,” Ford said. “They want to talk about transit.”

Ford himself has not re-leased any specific economic

policies during this campaign, while his four top opponents have all released proposals.

“Jobs is the No. 1 issue in this campaign,” Ford said. He has yet to provide any details on how to combat Toronto’s climbing unemployment rate during his four years as mayor.

Toronto’s monthly season-ally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.8 per cent in July, up from 9.4 per cent when Ford took office.TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Dudebox taking its party undergroundA group of self-professed party animals is hoping to strike a bargain for charity by throw-ing a hip-hop dance jamboree for up to 1,400 people in the darkened underground park-ing lot of Honest Ed’s this Fri-day.

Daniel Tal, co-founder of Dudebox, said the space is per-fect for their brand of shindig: It’s little-known, unconven-tional and subterranean.

“This Honest Ed’s space, it’s iconic. And most people don’t even know there’s an under-

ground parking lot there,” Tal, 28, told Torstar News Service.

“It’s kind of a mystery to most people.”

Tal said Dudebox has se-cured insurance to hold the event, but is still trying to get a noise exemption permit

from the city before Friday to allay local concerns over the planned bash.

“We’re all working hard on getting everything sorted out to keep our guests safe and the neighbourhood community feeling good about the event,”

he said Tuesday. The store’s long-time gen-

eral manager, Russell Lazar, said the space has been used for parties during the past two years of the Toronto Fringe Fes-tival. Even so, he was surprised when the guys from Dudebox approached him about three weeks ago with their pitch to throw a party down there.

“It’s unusual,” said Lazar as he walked beneath the con-crete parkade’s white fluores-cent lights Monday afternoon. “But if it’s a worthy cause, it is hard to say no.”

The Dudebox parkade party is scheduled to start at 10 p.m. Friday night and run until 3 a.m. Saturday.TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Party on. Charity bash coming to little-known Honest Ed’s parking lot

Origins

• Since their beginnings seven years ago as a group of friends throwing parties at their “hipster frat house” in Chinatown, Dudebox has raised $80,000 for various charities by holding parties — sometimes illegally, Tal admits — on rooftops, at

a Polish hall, in an old car wash and at an emptied out crossfi t gym.

• Dudebox keeps 20 per cent of the party profi ts to reinvest in the organization, while the rest of the money goes to charity, said Tal.

Access

Wi-Fi coming to more TTC stationsWi-Fi service will soon be available throughout the downtown stations of the Yonge and University sub-way lines and riders will be able to access it for free.

BAI Canada has begun work establishing Wi-Fi access at Wellesley, College, Dundas and Union stations, with completion expected by the spring of 2015 — in time for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games, which are to take place in Toronto in July 2015.

Bloor-Yonge and St. George subway stations were the first to stations to get Wi-Fi capability in December 2013, said Ken Ranger, CEO of BAI Canada.

The rest of the subway stops between Bloor-Yonge and Union and Museum and Union, as well as the Spadina stations, will also have Wi-Fi capability by next spring, said Ranger. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Ban sought on energy drinks with boozeThe Toronto Board of Health is recommending that energy drinks not be sold with alcohol at city events due to concerns about the harmful effects of mixing booze and caffeine.

In a report that will be presented at its Aug. 18 meeting, the board is proposing to ban the sale of caffeinated energy bever-ages to use in mixed drinks at events on city property. It would cover events where organizers apply for a per-mit to serve alcohol. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Pool policy irks dadKevin Putnam with sons Kenneth, right, Lewis and daughter Audra at Campbell Avenue Park wading pool on Tuesday. The stay-at-home dad says a citywide pool super-vision policy discriminates against families with three or more chil-dren. He says his three kids were disappointed after being turned away from High Park swimming pool Monday afternoon because of the stringent safety requirements. If a kid is fi ve years old or younger, adults are allowed to take care of only two of them at a time, always within arm’s reach. After hearing from Putnam, Coun. Ana Bailao says the policy might need to be revisited. She plans to ask aquatics to take a second look at existing pool safety guards. AARON HARRIS/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Police chief serves Rob Ford’s brother with defamation notice

Chief Bill Blair torstar news service

Toronto’s police chief has filed a defamation notice against Mayor Rob Ford’s brother for comments the city councillor made earlier this month.

Doug Ford suggested two weeks ago that Chief Bill Blair helped leak information that police were preparing to sub-poena the mayor in an ongoing investigation as “payback,” al-though he declined to elaborate on what he meant.

At the time, Blair said Ford was lying and warned he was prepared to take legal action.

Toronto police spokesman Mark Pugash said the defama-tion notice was handed to the councillor on Monday night.

“What the notice specifies is a public retraction and apology in a forum to be agreed (upon) beforehand by Chief Blair,” he said. “There’s no mention of money at all in the document.”

Pugash added that the legal action is being pursued by Blair personally, and doesn’t involve taxpayer money.

“The next step is with the councillor,” Pugash said.

Doug Ford said Tuesday that the issue was with his lawyers and refused to directly answer questions about whether he would apologize to Blair.

“There is no lawsuit as far as I know,” he said.

The councillor also criticized Pugash’s role as a spokesperson for Blair’s “private issues.”

At a news conference at his campaign headquarters, Mayor Ford said he couldn’t comment on the matter. “The issue is be-tween the chief and my broth-er,” he said. the canadian PRess

The Toronto International Film Festival announced another seven galas and 17 special presentation titles Tuesday, including movies starring Kristen Wiig, Dustin Hoffman, Benicio del Toro, John Travolta, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Keira Knight-ley, Juliette Binoche, Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton.

The 39th edition of TIFF, which opens Sept. 4 with The Judge and unspools over 10 days, has added social sat-ire Welcome to Me, starring Kristen Wiig as a woman who uses a lottery win to buy her own self-focused infomercial show; Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger zombie flick Maggie; Sophie Barthes’s version of classic drama Madame Bo-vary starring Mia Wasikow-ska as the tragic heroine; and Tom McCarthy’s The Cob-bler, starring Adam Sandler.

Also on the Special Pres-entation bill is the director’s cut of Human Highway, Ber-nard Shakey’s (a.k.a. Neil Young) and Dean Stockwell’s bizarre 1982 comedy-musical fantasy.

TIFF also unveiled a hefty Contemporary World Cin-

ema program, with films from 42 countries, as well as the eight South Korean titles to screen as part of the City to City program. It also detailed the lineup for the inaugural Short Cuts Inter-national slate, as well as the avant-garde Wavelengths program for “cinephiles, art lovers and daring festival-goers who refuse to be cat-egorized.”

Birds having a field day at police marine unit

The police marine unit’s headquarters on Queens Quay is so full of barn swal-lows that officers have to keep the unit’s 1941 Taylor-craft wood boat covered with a tarp to prevent droppings from crusting on the hull.

The birds have nested each year since about 2008, setting

up in the rafters of the down-town base for the summer. The police first asked the city for help in 2012, according to po-lice board minutes, requesting that mesh be installed to pre-vent the birds from nesting and protect not only the boats but also officers’ health. Two years later, the birds are still free to nest in the rafters of the build-ing.

“Obviously, left unad-dressed, the issues with the swallows and droppings be-come very problematic. (The wood boat) would be covered within a day,” said Staff Sgt. Greg Macdonald. “The point

is that, to date, the issue is still as it was two years ago. To date there’s been no further update that’s been brought to our attention.”

Deterred by the high cost

of the netting, pegged at more than $100,000, the city washed the facility in the winter of 2013, while the birds were south. According to Wynna Brown, manager of media rela-tions and issues management with the city, that approach did not work and they’re looking at other options.

“Staff are currently working on an RFP to engage a wildlife consultant to develop a strategy to address this issue and over-see the registration and applica-tion process with the Ministry of Natural Resources,” Brown wrote in an emailed response. torstar news service

Come rain or shine, on Wed-nesday the BMO Urban Picnic is transforming Yonge-Dun-das Square into the ultimate “Staycation Paradise.”

The square will be com-pletely covered in sod for the day, creating a green oasis, with free Ferris wheel rides, face painting, carnival games and free barbecue, ice cream and beverages available.

According to the recent

BMO Summer Travel Survey, more than half (55 per cent) of Canadians are opting for a staycation this summer.

The BMO Urban Picnic Staycation is an opportunity for families and friends to save money and enjoy a sum-mer escape.

The event will benefit Kids Help Phone — Canada’s lead-ing free, anonymous and con-fidential professional youth

counselling service. BMO, the AIR MILES Reward Program and MasterCard Worldwide will each donate $10,000 to the organization, generating a total of $30,000. BMO also announced it would donate the reusable sod to the YMCA of Greater Toronto — helping to build a greener community at Cedar Glen Outdoor Cen-tre. Metro

Shangri-La building

Make it safe, city orders developerThe City of Toronto has ordered the 65-floor Shangri-La hotel and con-do building’s developer to take immediate action to prevent injuries from falling glass, demanding overhead protection be installed on sidewalks around the downtown property.

The city also ordered Westbank Corp. to pre-vent the building’s condo owners and hotel guests from using their tem-pered-glass balconies until they can be wrapped in a protective netting. The or-der comes after a pane of patio glass shattered and fell from the 51st floor of the luxury building on July 17. TORSTAR newS SeRvice

city policy nearly foils plans for a Salvador Allende street

Luis Cortes, from left, Luz Bascunan and Patricio Bascunan are all smiles after the city approved naming a street after Salvador Allende, a former president of Chile. Courtesy brian Platt

A routine city policy almost foiled a decade’s effort by Toronto Chileans to have a street named after Salvador Allende.

The problem? They didn’t have the permission of Al-lende’s relatives.

Allende was the socialist president of Chile before a CIA-backed coup overthrew him on Sept. 11, 1973. He died when coup leaders stormed the palace.

On the coup’s 30th an-niversary, Patricio and Luz Bascunan, teachers who had fled Chile for Toronto in the coup’s aftermath, ap-proached Coun. Joe Mihevc about finding something in their neighbourhood to name after Allende.

For years, they checked in with Mihevc to see if any-thing had come up for nam-ing, but only last year did a new street planned for a townhome development on Ossington Avenue give them the opportunity.

On Sunday, the Bascu-nans had just arrived home from vacation when they discovered the new street name was being rejected by city staff due to lack of “informed written consent”

from Allende’s relatives.“We quickly wrote a let-

ter to his daughter but it wasn’t going to be in time,” said Luz Bascunan, referring to Isabel Allende, who is cur-

rently a senator in Chile. They scrambled and got let-ters from Chile’s Consulate General and local Chilean associations, but that wasn’t enough.

Instead, the Toronto and East York Community Coun-cil overruled the policy in a unanimous vote on Tuesday, and the new street name will go to city council on Aug. 25 for final approval.

Luis Cortes, who spent five years in a Chilean prison after the coup, was watching from the gallery as the vote happened. He was among the thousands of Chilean refugees Canada took in (after significant pressure from activists) when General Augusto Pinochet started hunting down and “dis-appearing” socialist support-ers of Allende.

He said it was “over-whelming, extraordinary,” to have a street near his home take Allende’s name.

Luz Bascunan said there will be a big celebration in her community when city council gives the final stamp of approval. TORSTAR newS SeRvice

Addiction seemed to stalk Robin Williams, tempting him when he was weak and taunting him when he least expected it.

“It lays in wait for the time when you think, ‘It’s fine now, I’m OK,’” he told Good Morning America in 2006. “Then, the next thing you know, it’s not OK. Then you realize, ‘Where am I? I didn’t realize I was in Cleveland.’”

Williams, the comic whirl-wind known for his hilarious stream-of-consciousness ramb-lings, was found dead Monday after the 63-year-old hanged himself in his San Francisco Bay Area home.

On film, he played every-thing from a genie to a psychia-

trist. In life, he battled periodic bouts of substance abuse and depression, opening up about them to journalists with self-deprecating wit and making his struggles fuel for his comedy.

“Cocaine for me was a place to hide,” he told People in 1988.

One of his first wake-up

calls was in 1982 when fellow comedian John Belushi died of a fatal drug overdose. Williams briefly partied with the Satur-day Night Live star the night he died and his friend’s pass-ing coupled with impending fatherhood forced the comed-ian to quit cocaine and alcohol

cold turkey.Sobriety lasted 20 years.

Then the taunts became over-whelming again. He told Pa-rade magazine in 2013 that his relapse after two decades of so-briety was frighteningly simple.

“One day I walked into a store and saw a little bottle of

Jack Daniel’s.... I drank it, and there was that brief moment of ‘Oh, I’m OK!’ But it escalated so quickly.”

Williams continued his re-covery by attending weekly AA meetings. But his second mar-riage, to film producer Marsha Garces, ended in 2008 — large-ly because of his drinking.

“You know, I was shameful, and you do stuff that causes dis-gust, and that’s hard to recover from.”

Recently, a new bout of de-pression prompted the actor to enter rehab. His publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said at the time that Williams made the decision because he needed to recharge after working for 18 months straight. On Monday, the strug-gle ended. The AssociATed Press

Apparent suicide

Authorities say Williams was found by assistant Authorities detailed Robin Williams’ final moments Tuesday, saying the actor and comedian hanged him-self with a belt in his San Francisco Bay Area home.

Marin County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Boyd said Williams was last seen alive by his wife Sunday night when she went to bed. She woke up the next morning and left, thinking he was still asleep.

Afterward, Williams’ personal assistant came to the Tiburon home and became concerned when Williams failed to respond to knocks at a door. The as-sistant found the actor dead in a bedroom and called po-lice. Boyd said all evidence indicates Williams took his own life. But he said a final ruling will be made once toxicology reports and interviews with witnesses are complete. The AssociATed Press

Egypt presents plan to end Gaza conflict: Palestinian officials

Egypt presented a proposed ceasefire to Israel and Hamas aimed at ending the month-long war, Palestinian officials said early Wednesday after ne-gotiators huddled for a second day of talks.

Palestinian officials told The Associated Press Wednesday that Egypt’s proposal calls for an easing to parts of the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Key areas of disagreement, however, includ-ing the Islamic militant group Hamas’ demand for a full lifting of the blockade and Israeli calls for Hamas to disarm, are left to later negotiations.

The Palestinian officials spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the negotiations with the media.

One of the Palestinian offi-cials who spoke to AP said that according to the Egyptian pro-posal, the blockade would be lifted gradually over time.

He said it would stipulate that Israel would end airstrikes on militants, and a 500-metre buffer zone next to the Gaza and Israel frontier would be re-duced over time.

The Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams retired after 10 hours of discussions and re-sume the talks on Wednesday, the officials said. The current ceasefire is set to expire at mid-night. It was not immediately clear if either side would accept the deal.

“The talks are difficult but

serious,” wrote Moussa Abu Marzouk, head of the Hamas delegation, on his Facebook page.

Another member of the Pal-estinian delegation reported Israel had offered a number of gestures aimed at improving life for Gaza’s residents, includ-ing an increase in the number of trucks permitted to deliver goods into the territory from Is-rael each day. ThE AssociATEd PrEss

Russian convoy

Aid must be delivered by Red Cross, Ukraine saysRussia dispatched hundreds of trucks covered in white tarps and sprinkled with holy water Tuesday on a mission to deliver aid to a rebel-held zone in eastern Ukraine.

The televised sight of the

miles-long convoy sparked a show of indignation from the government in Kyiv, which insisted any aid must be deliv-ered by the international Red Cross. Ukraine and the West have openly expressed con-cern that Moscow intends to use the cover of a humanitar-ian operation to embark on a military incursion in support of pro-Russia separatists.

Officials with both the International Committee of

the Red Cross and Ukraine’s government said they had no information about what the trucks were carrying or where they were headed. A Ukrain-ian security spokesman said the convoy was being managed by the Russian army and could not be allowed into the country. The govern-ment in Kyiv said the trucks could unload at the border and transfer the aid to ICRC vehicles. ThE AssociATEd PrEss

Casualties

The month-long Gaza war has killed more than 1,900 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians, according to Palestinian and UN officials. In Israel, 67 people have been killed — of those, all but three have been soldiers.

Deadline for current ceasefire looms. Plan leaves room for negotiation later on

Lauren Bacall, the slinky, sultry-voiced actress who created on-screen magic with Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep and off-screen magic in one of Hollywood’s most storied marriages, died Tuesday at age 89.

Bacall, whose long career brought two Tonys and a special Oscar, died in New York. The managing partner of the Hum-phrey Bogart Estate, Robbert J.F. de Klerk, said that Bacall died at home, but declined to give further details.

She was among the last of the old-fashioned Hollywood stars and her legend, and the legend of “Bogie and Bacall” — the hard-boiled couple who could fight and make up with the best of them — started almost from the moment she appeared on screen. A fashion model and bit-part New York ac-tress before moving to Hollywood at 19, Bacall achieved immediate fame in 1944 with one scene in

Sierra Club alarmed by low calving rates of blue whales in Gulf of St. Lawrence The Sierra Club Canada says a study of the blue whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence indicates alarmingly low calving rates for the endangered species.

The study says that popula-tion has only produced 22 calves.

Leaving Bogart’s hotel room, she murmured: “You don’t have to say anything, and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”

She was less than half Bogart’s age, yet as wise and as jaded as him. Her sly glance, with chin down and eyes raised, added to her fame; she was nicknamed “The Look.” Bogart and Bacall married amid headlines in 1945, and they co-starred in three more films, The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo

(1948). Their marriage lasted until Bogart’s death in 1957.

She appeared in movies for more than a half-century, but not until 1996 did she receive an Academy Award nomination — as supporting actress for The Mirror Has Two Faces. She lost to Juliette Binoche.

She finally got a statuette in November 2009 when she was presented with a special Oscar at the movie academy’s new Govern-ors Awards gala.

When the American Film In-stitute compiled its list of screen legends in 1999, Bacall ranked No. 20 on the roster of 25 actresses. Bogart topped the list of actors.the associated press

New law closes the shutter on popular ‘tiger selfies’Men in New York will have to find new ways to attract mates now that it’s illegal to pose for photos with a tiger, lion or other big cat — a practice popu-lar on online dating sites but denounced by wildlife advocates as potentially dangerous to both man and beast.

A law signed this week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo prohibits direct contact between mem-bers of the public and big cats at travelling animal shows and fairs. Animal exhibitors would face fines for each violation.

So-called “tiger selfies” have emerged as popular profile photos on online dating sites, with users — generally young men — looking to stand out by posting a photo of themselves with the dangerous predators.the associated press

The use of untested Ebola treatments to help quell the current outbreak in West Africa is ethical, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

But the Geneva-based global health agency said countries that use experi-mental treatments have a moral obligation to collect data so the world can learn what works — and which treatments to stop using, if any turn out to be unsafe.

The statement came fol-lowing a daylong meeting Monday of an expert panel that the WHO convened to advise it on the thorny ethical issues of using experimental drugs in this outbreak. It was composed of ethicists — in-cluding University of Toronto professor Dr. Ross Upshur — a representative of a patient advocacy group and others.

While the statement may clear the way for additional use of experimental Ebola

products, it made no refer-ence to the fact that there are barely any supplies of any of them in stock. Making clinical grade experimental drugs is costly and in the early stages of drug develop-ment, companies generally only make small batches.

On Monday afternoon, LeafBio of San Diego, Calif., the company developing ZMapp, the product given to two American workers who contracted Ebola in Liberia,

said it had exhausted its sup-ply, components of which were created at Canada’s Na-tional Microbiology Labora-tory in Winnipeg.

It was reported that a treat-ment course was obtained for an infected Spanish priest who was taken to Madrid for care. The priest, Miguel Pajares, 75, died Tuesday. The hospital where he was treat-ed would not reveal if he had been given ZMapp before he died. the canadian press

Canada’s self-styled “Prince of Pot” returned to a raucous welcome from supporters in Windsor, Ont., Tuesday after serving his U.S. sentence for selling marijuana seeds, vow-ing to continue his activism even if it means more arrests.

Loud cheers and large clouds of pot smoke arose as Marc Emery, 56, arrived in the border city after complet-ing his five-year sentence for selling marijuana seeds from Canada to American custom-ers.

Emery hugged his wife Jodie Emery, who wants to run in next year’s federal elec-tion for the Liberals — Lead-er Justin Trudeau supports legalizing marijuana — then launched into a long, pro-Liberal speech peppered with

prison anecdotes.“I do believe that they are

sincere that they will legalize marijuana,” Emery said.

“I know it’s the most un-cool thing in the world to have to say, especially to young people, that voting is the answer, but it is. It abso-lutely is.”

Legalization of marijuana, which Emery said should in-clude expunging the record of everyone ever convicted of a related offence, is the only issue in the next election that can have a profound impact on Canadians’ lives, he said.

“Critics say, ‘Well, Can-adians are interested in far more important things,”’ Emery said. “I say, ‘What? What are you interested in? The economy? The environ-ment? Health care? You can’t do anything about that by vot-ing. No vote’s going to change that.’

“If we can get this Liberal majority government next year we’ll never need to go to the polls to make marijuana legal ever again,” he said. The Canadian Pres

Economy

Canadians spend more on taxes, less on necessitiesThe average Canadian family is spending more on taxes than on food, shelter and clothing combined, according to a new study by the Fraser Institute.

According to the Vancouver-based think-tank, the average Canadian family earned $77,381 in 2013 and paid $32,369 in total taxes — or 41.8 per cent of income — com-pared with 36.1 per cent for food, shelter and cloth-ing combined.

By comparison, in 1961 the average family earned about $5,000 and spent 56.5 per cent of its income on food, shelter and cloth-ing, while $1,675 went to taxes (33.5 per cent).

It says that with more money going to the government, families have less for their own spending priorities, including saving for education and retire-ment and paying down debt. The Canadian Press

Plant waters rule in grocery aisles

Coconut water, maple water, even birch and cactus wat-ers…. A quick inventory of beverages in the produce sec-tion makes it clear — plant waters are rising.

Soda and non-fresh juice sales are flat or slipping slightly, but sales of plant-based products like coconut water — along with other alternative beverages such as kombucha and tea-based drinks — are growing, par-ticularly those sold alongside your fruits and veggies, ac-cording to data compiled by market research firm Nielsen.

Introduced several years ago, coconut water has been big for a while. Maple water

is a newer entry and is es-sentially maple sap, the stuff that normally is boiled down to syrup. Brands include Ver-tical Water and SEVA. And that’s not the only tree water on the market. There’s also birch water and, on the plant side, cactus, barley and artichoke waters.

Sales of all waters, including the new products, “fitness” and enhanced wat-ers, as well as regular sparkling and still, grew four per cent by value and nearly seven per cent by volume since July 2013.

Coconut water is not yet being tracked specif-ically, but totals for beverages in the produce department, which is where much coconut water is sold, showed double-digit growth. The value jump

for all produce section bev-erages — which includes smoothies, fresh juices and teas as well as water — was

nearly 13 per cent.

U.S. airport taking greener route to bird-strikes problemAn Ohio airport is experimenting with a new, gentler way to avoid bird strikes: planting tall prairie grass. Heavy birds like Canada geese — which caused us Airways Flight 1549 to force-land in the Hudson River in 2009 in the so-called Miracle on the Hudson — are believed to avoid long grasses because they fear predators might be hiding within. Dayton international Airport hopes to complete planting the tall prairie grass under the takeoff and landing paths by the end of this year. Phil ingliS/getty imageS File

Discover Pyongyang

Toronto-born JT Singh teamed up with flow-motion videographer Rob Whitworth and tour operator Koryo Tours to provide a rather stunning look at a day in the life of Pyongyang, North Korea. Obviously, there are some extremely tight restrictions on filming in North Korea — even in the showcase capital — and the people involved in the project were dutifully watched over by guides employed by a shockingly cruel reign. But glimpses into North Korea are still very rare, especially ones so beautifully shot. (JT Singh/Vimeo)

Robin Williams was the greatest comedian who ever lived.

I don’t think there’s any doubt (fire) about that.

But that may be the most heartbreaking sentence I’ve ever written because of the “was.”

Robin Williams killed himself Monday, and I would like to believe that before he did it, he went through one last funny little mono-logue in his head about killing yourself on a Monday.

Maybe he wove a spell of threads and ideas about Stormy Monday or how the Geldof family didn’t like Mondays either or how — here’s the point — Tuesday’s just the same. And faced with that, he killed himself.

It’s impossible to believe that, no matter how depressed or ad-dicted or stressed or whatever he was, his magnificent, improvis-ing mind ever failed to rise to the challenge of the material, even

if it was his own death at his own hand.I didn’t know Robin Williams, but he spoke to

me. He spoke to me as Mrs. Doubtfire, as Mork from Ork, as Peter Pan vs. Hook. As that ridiculous penguin in Happy Feet. He spoke to me as Oliver Sacks in Awakenings or Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting, as Adrian Cronauer in …

Gooooooooood Morning Vietnam! He spoke to me as the raving, brilliant, prepos-

terous standup comedian who, with Craig Fergus-on as his accomplice, could spend 12 minutes wringing all the comic possibilities out of the word “chlamydia.” Even better, he could make golf funny in ways Bob Hope never imagined.

He spoke to me as the virtuoso genie from Aladdin, the high-water mark of Disney anima-tion.

Most of all, regardless of the role, he spoke the truth. No one was more subversive than Robin Williams because he was im-mune to censorship.

He was too funny. He made the censors laugh. He couldn’t help himself. He’d turn up on one of those cookie-

cutter late-night talk shows where everyone is all glib charm, and turn his guest spot, sandwiched between commercials, into a tour de force of the truth. Whatever the topic — sex, acting, ad-diction (especially his own) — he made it real. And very funny.

He couldn’t help himself: No one could stop him, so he stopped himself. So in the wake of the most glorious noise, the si-lence is deafening.

Except for this: a scene from the 1989 movie Dead Poets Soci-ety, where Williams is John Keating, an idealistic young teacher who brings the truth of poetry to young men at an uptight board-ing school. Keats is quoting Whitman: “Oh me! Oh life! Of the questions of these recurring. Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish. What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here — that life exists and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

“What will your verse be?”Thank you, Robin, for asking the question, even if the answer

escaped your grasp.

Robin Williams died Monday in an apparent suicide. Williams was 63. MATT SAYLES/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE

The first time I saw Robin Wil-liams was on 90 Minutes Live with Peter Gzowski, a Canadian late--night talk show that aired from 1976 to 1978. Thirty five years later I can still remember the frantic burst of energy that emanated from my television late that Friday night.

Gzowski grinned as the comic careened through their chat, jumping from joke to joke, impression to impres-sion, including Williams’s take on the world’s most in-telligent child. “I find most adults very banal, but I’ll talk to you, anyway.”

“Where did you get that character from?” Gzowski asked, “Was it based on any-one?”

“Me, basically. As a kid.”“Were you brilliant as a

child?”

“Yes, and as a young man, too,” replied the impish 27-year-old.

The standup comedians I had seen on television wore suits and told one-liners. This was stream of consciousness, a wild look at a comedic mind that didn’t work the way I was accustomed to them working. For six minutes it felt like an alien had taken control of my TV, a life force like I had never seen before.

Appropriately enough, soon afterward he appeared as Mork, the E.T. from Ork, on Happy Days and his career was officially launched.

For the next 35 years, Wil-liams was a constant on our screens, big and small. His first starring role in a movie, 1980’s Popeye, was met with critical scorn and weak box office, but Roger Ebert had praise for the star, calling Wil-liam’s “perpetual squint and lopsided smile” completely convincing.

Moving from strength to strength he embarked on a remarkable run of films, earn-ing the first of three Best Ac-tor Oscar nods for Good Mor-ning, Vietnam and winning an Academy Award for his work as an empathetic ther-apist in Good Will Hunting. A handful of Golden Globes

celebrated his work in Good Morning, Vietnam, The Fisher King and Mrs. Doubtfire.

He leaves behind a diverse legacy from the laughs of The Birdcage to the drama of Awakenings to the chills of One Hour Photo, the seize-the-day uplift of Dead Poets Society and the ad-libbed bril-liance of Aladdin. Every dec-ade since that appearance on 90 Minutes Live has given us a memorable Williams per-formance, and he will live, on the screen at least, with three more films scheduled for re-lease this year and next.

Everyone has a favourite Robin Williams character. For me its Parry, the treasure hunter in The Fisher King. It’s a funny, bittersweet perform-ance in a movie that mixes

‘O Captain! My Captain!’Shazbot. Remembering the wildly funny and outsized talent of Robin Williams who has us all standing on our desks

fantasy and reality in equal doses. “I’m a knight on a spe-cial quest,” Parry says, words

Paris not as bright as the button she’s pushing to rake in $347K/hr

Are Paris Hilton’s retweets a form of protest or a sign of total self-delusion? Ask-ing for a friend. OK, here’s the deal: Word spread quickly this week about how much the hotel heiress and sex-tape entrepreneur pulls down for her work as a DJ in Ibiza this summer — and she’s pulling down a lot. “She’s making $2.7 mil-lion from the four nights — $347,000 an hour,” a source tells the Sun. “The crowds do seem to enjoy it, but most are too off their faces to care that she’s simply pressed play on a Beyoncé mega-mix.” Or maybe their expectations of Hilton’s abilities are so low that they’re actually blown

away by her button-press-ing abilities. But that’s be-side the point. As versions of this story have been popping up online, Hilton has been actively retweet-

ing them in a seeming act of braggadocio. Here’s the thing, though: She seems to be missing the point that this is not being reported as a good thing.

Williams in CabaretEmma Stone is reportedly set to take over for Michelle Williams on Broadway in Cabaret according to one of the cattiest sources ever to talk to Radar Online. “Emma is replacing Michelle in Cabaret at the end of Nov-ember,” the sneering secret-spiller says. “Producers are hoping it helps make them back their investment and stay open for another exten-sion because Michelle didn’t do the box office they were hoping for.” Damn, girl. Anything else? Yes, actually: Apparently director Sam Mendes didn’t even want Williams in the first place. “(Stone) was Sam Mendes’ first choice, but had to drop out because Sony wouldn’t

accommodate the dates with Spider-Man 2.”

How-to

Shop for the right luggage1. Decide if you prefer soft or hard cases. 2. Veer away from too many outer pockets, which aretoo tempting for handlers in shadier airports. Zippers and tags can also catch on your clothes or on other bags on the carousel. 3. Never buy the lowest-priced model. It will be the flimsiest and wear out faster. 4. You probably don’t need all three sizes of the same case. 5. Only buy bags that come with a good warranty. DOUG WALLACE/METRO

Trend

Bye-bye room serviceFull steak meals on a silver platter? Not anymore. As fewer travellers seem to care about room service (research puts the amenity at only 1 per cent of hotel revenue), more hotels are opting out. Some hotels are teaming up with nearby eat-eries to drum up unique ways to feed the masses, with many offering a grab-and-go service. The Hilton chain is credited with getting this ball rolling. Their Waikiki Beach location lets guests order food online or via phone app. New York’s Hud-son Hotel and the Public Chicago both offer interesting brown-bag options. DOUG WALLACE/METRO

Atlantic City: Not just for gamblers anymoreCity tries to woo gay touristsAs the New Jersey resort town of Atlan-tic City struggles to find a new identity and new sources of revenue, the city is once again wooing gay tourists with vigour.

Atlantic City is planning a series of events to attract gay tourists, who are becoming an increasingly important part of the resort’s growth strategy.

“Atlantic City had its heyday with the gay population on New York Av-enue,” said the city’s openly gay mayor Don Guardian earlier this year. “This is where you came when you wanted to have a good time. Straight people came to these places, too, because they wanted to party and dance in the hot-test clubs.”

But when casino gambling began in 1978, soaring land prices pushed out many small gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses.

Events aimed at the gay community this year include the StandOUT Expo, a networking event in September for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community, and the Miss’d America Pageant, a drag spoof of the famous pageant, also in September. The mayor also dedicated a gay-friendly beach in Atlantic City at Park Place near Bally’s, but says the entire city is gay-friendly.THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Atlantic City takes a swing at drawing visitors with golfing

Atlantic City is doubling down on golf.

Back when casinos along the famous Boardwalk were booming, the 20 public courses on this stretch of the south New Jersey coast went almost unnoticed. But the recession and stiff competition from doz-ens of new casinos throughout the U.S. northeast have slashed revenues and changed the city’s tourism focus.

Golf and other non-gaming attractions such as shopping, dining, concerts and amuse-ment parks are being heavily promoted as part of a $30-mil-

lion ‘DO AC’ campaign. The game’s local roots date

to the 1887 opening of the At-lantic City Country Club, which still ranks as the area’s mar-quee course. Native grasses and tidal marshes define a classic layout originally designed by Willie Park Jr., the British Open champion in 1887 and 1889.

Six USGA championships have been played here, but the club’s real claim to fame is as the birthplace of the golf term “birdie” in 1903. Frequent ce-lebrity visitors have included Bob Hope, boxing champion Joe Louis and Arnold Palmer, who made it his home course while serving nearby in the Coast Guard in the 1950s.

Other top layouts within an easy drive of Atlantic City include Twisted Dune Golf Club, Shore Gate Golf Club, Mc-

Cullough’s Emerald Golf Links, Harbor Pines Golf Club, Sand Barrens Golf Club, Running Deer Golf Club and Blue Heron Pines Golf Club.

At the Vineyards, golfers play through the grounds of Renault Winery, established in 1864 and one of the oldest win-eries in the United States.

And the fairways of Seaview Golf Resort’s venerable Bay Course — the host of the LPGA Tour’s ShopRite Classic and where Sam Snead famously won the 1942 PGA Champion-ship — offer views across Reeds Bay of the casino towers of a city in transition.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has made revitalizing Atlantic City a key priority of his administration. New parks, art installations and landscap-ing have been added through-

Beyond casinos. Luring players to the town’s links is all part of a $30-million plan to showcase all this destination has to offer

For the family

Family-friendly options range from minigolf and paintball to the Atlantic City Aquarium. But a long-time local favourite is Steel Pier, an amusement park that juts into the ocean from the boardwalk and has more than 25 extreme rides. Opened in 1898, the park is undergoing a $100-million makeover.

Summer trip

Hitting the road in Nova Scotia

Often missed by travellers who exit and enter Nova Scotia via the TransCanada Highway, the Sunrise Trail is a secondary driving route that hugs the province’s north-ern coast. Stretching from the New Brunswick border through to Cape Breton, it is a diversion well worth taking.

PlayMost coastal areas of Nova Scotia offer a refreshingly chilly swim at best, whereas the waters of the Northum-berland Strait benefit from the flow of the Gulf Stream current. Locals proudly boast that these are “the warmest waters north of the Caro-linas.” Numerous beaches offer public access: Heather Beach located near Port Howe is a good choice for its exten-

sive sandy beach and facilities. Golfers will be delighted to discover a range of first-class golf courses along the route, including the Fox Harb’r Golf Resort & Spa. This stunning seaside resort boasts a private landing strip for planes and a luxury yacht. A more budget-friendly option is the Northumberland Links course in the town of Pugwash. This course is a favourite of singer Anne Murray.

Eat & DrinkLocated in Malagash, Jost Winery is one of the leaders in the burgeoning Nova Scotia wine industry. Stop by for a free tour and tasting. Sample the Ceilidh Marechal Foch for a taste of wine made solely

with Nova Scotia grapes. If suds are more your style, swing by the Tatamagouche Brewing Company for a swig of their organic beers. Or try Whirligigs Café in Wallace or the Sandpiper in Port Howe. Order the seafood chowder. It’s a safe bet along this route.

StayThe most charming spot on the coast has to be the Amherst Shore Country Inn. Located halfway between Amherst and Pugwash and set on a knoll overlooking the water, this inn has set a high standard in the area for more than 25 years. Book a room or one of the standalone cottages dotted along the shore.

out the downtown area, and the Boardwalk has been cleaned up and opened up by the casinos, some of which once tried to re-strict access to the waterfront to keep customers inside.

Opened in 2012, the splashy highrise Revel Casino Hotel has dramatically altered the Atlan-tic City skyline. The $2.4-billion resort is home to a Las Vegas-style concert space featuring headliners such as Dionne War-wick, the Barenaked Ladies and Natalie Cole.

Gaming industry giant Gold-en Nugget Inc. has taken over management of the former Trump Marina Hotel Casino,

pouring $150 million into reno-vations. And Caesars Entertain-ment Corp. is investing $150 million in a meeting and con-ference facility at its Harrah’s Atlantic City location.

But perhaps the best news — apart from the new focus on golf, of course — was the return last September of the Miss America pageant after six years in archrival Las Vegas. The pageant, a local institution since 1920, is regarded as an im-portant showcase for the recent civic improvements.

The odds on Atlantic City’s recovery are looking better all the time.

A road trip to Huntsville, Ont., is one of my favourite drives be-cause of the scenic routes you can take through the region. As you ride along highways, the scenery changes from open val-leys and forests to granite rock walls soaring more than 100 feet.

The roadWe start off by heading north on Brock Street (Highway 12) once again out of Whitby. As we make a quick stop for gas up in the tiny town of Brechin, I have to dodge a car driver who isn’t check-ing their blind spot, and who notices me at the last second. Sadly, this happens quite often. Once re-fuelled and fired up, we head north to Highway 11, which is com-monly recognized as part of Yonge Street. In fact, Yonge Street is dubbed the “longest street in the world,” as it con-tinues to arch through North-ern Ontario.

The pit stop As we continue north towards Huntsville, we make a pit stop for a snack at the historic Bru-nel Lift Locks just off Brunel Road. We stop to talk to the young worker who tells us that these old lift locks are still cranked by hand. The sweat dripping from his brow proves that it’s a job that keeps him in shape through the hot summer months. We sit back and watch

him vigorously turn the crank on both ends of the lock as it fills with water while boaters wait, not complaining about the amount of time it takes. Once the boats coast through, the worker leaps into the water to cool off, then climbs back out and sits in the sun to dry off, as he waits for the next group of boaters to come down the river.

Our destinationIf you’re a big art nerd like me, you’ll want to visit Huntsville. Tom Thomson and members of the Group of Seven painted some of their famous landscape paintings in the region. The commun-ity hosts a number of art shows and exhibits through-out the year, so try to co-or-dinate your trip during one of them. Huntsville also offers art workshops if you want to try your hand at one.

Heading back home, we take winding Highway 35. The picturesque views of blue lakes and massive rock walls have led some people to say that it

is the most scenic highway in Ontario. I am sure the Group of Seven would approve.

Moto Diary

I grew up around motorcycles. My first time on the back of my dad’s Honda CBR 900 street bike was at the tender age of 10. There’s noth-ing I love more than the scent of bike fuel and the rush of adrenalin as I twist the throttle. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing my family’s motorcycle journeys with you. Together we will explore some of Ontario’s less-used highways and hid-den gems.

TODAY’S HOROSCOPE:

Social media is a field with a lot to offer a recent grad or new professional..

While you may already have extensive skills using different social media platforms in your personal life, don’t assume you can do well in an interview just by showing up.

Every organization has dif-ferent goals and expectations of their social media presence, so it’s impossible to predict exactly what kinds of questions you’ll encounter in an inter-view.

However, there are a num-ber of common topics that are almost certain to come up when you’re interviewing for a role that involves social media. Planning to discuss these areas of your experience is a great way to get your interview prep started.

Your experience with different platformsTo be the in-house expert on so-cial media, you’ll need to dem-onstrate extensive knowledge of common platforms — and the skills to pick up new ones as needed.

Interviewers will often ask questions that pertain specific-ally to one platform or another,

even posing specific scenarios related to social media use.

Personal use of social media is very different from business social media use. Make sure you research and understand the strategy involved with each platform, and be prepared to apply your knowledge to the employer’s questions.

Tip: Your future employer has probably checked out your so-cial media footprint. If there are major platforms you don’t use very often (or at all), make sure to indicate why — and show that you still understand their role and effective use.

Your understanding of analyticsProviding concrete results mat-ters in every role, and social media is no exception.

To show an employer that you’re equipped for the job, you’ll need to demonstrate that you know how to measure re-sults, use different metrics to draw conclusions and make

recommendations based on data.

When you discuss a specific situation, project or campaign that you handled in the past, don’t just describe your ideas or how entertaining they were — highlight how you used data to guide your decisions and meas-ure your success.

In your personal life, you probably don’t use data to guide your social media use. In the professional world, under-standing the numbers will back up that you know what you’re doing.

Tip: Bring examples of cam-paigns or posts you have pub-lished in the past and the re-sults they garnered (make sure to have some kind of compari-son or benchmark).

Your writing skillsSome interviewers will ask you to complete an onsite writing test, or request a writing sample as part of the screening process.

The ability to function under pressure is a key social media skill, so you’ll need to be ready to produce polished work on the spot.

Make a strong impression during your interview by bringing some relevant writ-ing samples you can provide as needed. If your work has been published online, this is a great way to underscore your past experience and suc-cess.

If you don’t have any pub-lished work online, starting a blog or personal website to showcase your writing is a great way to get started.

Tip: An organization’s social media profiles will use specif-ic language, phrasing and tone. Make sure you under-stand these features and can replicate them with ease.

You’re only a college or uni-versity student for a few short years, then you are sent off into the wonderful world of work, work and more work.

Many students get so caught up in post-secondary educa-tion that they focus solely on classes and assignments, forget-ting that this is a prime time to gain valuable experience that may help you land a job after graduation.

Why should you get in-

volved? It’s a great way to meet new people, network, and build your resumé. Here are some of the best ways to get involved on campus, wherever you are.

Check out your career centreThis is the optimal place to start. Most institutions have an on-campus career centre, which can help prepare an ex-ceptional application, offer you job-hunt guidance and connect you with on-campus events.

Don’t assume that the re-sources at the career centre are only for those close to graduation. There’s value in connecting with the centre at every stage of your education and school-to-work transition.

Tip: A little intimidated? Make a list of some general goals you’d like your career centre to help you with. Then look for resour-ces that match your interests.

Participate in clubs or associationsThis is the best way for you to

start getting involved, particu-larly if you’re a new student (or a little reluctant to put yourself out there).

Finding a club that matches your interests or hobbies is a great way to meet new people and explore a personal passion.

Over time, you can move into a leadership role with your club, which can involve manag-ing finances, organizing events and other activities that you can use as relevant professional experience when you’re look-ing to land a job.

Tip: Can’t find a club or group that interests you? Start your own. That’s a great way to dem-onstrate initiative and leader-ship.

Join your student unionYour on-campus student union usually offers a num-ber of ways for you to get in-volved. These opportunities

can include part-time jobs, elected student positions and volunteer opportunities.

Roles in your student union often offer real respon-sibility — and empower you to make significant changes or improvements to existing practices, or develop entirely new projects.

This experience can be invaluable when you’re pre-paring your resumé for the school-to-work transition.

Tip: Research where former student leaders from your school have gone after gradua-tion. Reach out and ask them to share their insight. You’ll likely find many of them used their student-union experi-ence to land an entry-level job.

TalenTegg.ca is canada’s leading job siTe and online career resource for college and universiTy sTu-denTs and recenT graduaTes.

The joy of the join. Your on-campus involvement will help you get set for success once your schooling has come to an end

Enjoy a fun picnic dinner with your family by making it less fussy and more simple to put together. Using a few simple ingredients you can take some-thing that old and tired, and change it up to become a new picnic favourite.

These kabobs are made with ground beef, but you can use any ground meat your family enjoys, including ground tur-key, chicken, pork or veal.

If you are feeling a bit ad-venturous look for lean ground bison in local butchers to shake up your picnic recipe.

Get your kids to help out and shape the kabobs.

Whether they are served hot-dog style in a bun or straight up as meatballs, the best part is dipping them! My kids like to leave the bun behind and dip in sauces or condiments you may already have.

Pick up mini potatoes,

steam or boil them for about eight minutes just until they are tender, then put them on a kabob as well.

You can also roll the mixture into 24 meatballs and skewer onto small soaked wooden or metal skewers alternating with 18 grape tomatoes. Other veg-gies that work well include two small zucchini, cut in chunks or 18 small gourmet button mushrooms. Either way, cook the kabobs as the recipe directs.

Kids and adults alike will love the versatility and simpli-city of this recipe.

And don’t forget dessert. With some fruit and perhaps a few marshmallows you can skewer up a sweet treat for the family.

Be sure to have some choco-late nearby if you want to dip into something a bit more

sweet. Caramel, hot fudge or strawberry sauces will also match up perfectly.

1. In large bowl combine beef, coriander, garlic, cumin, Worcestershire sauce, and pep-per until well distributed.

2. Divide mixture into 6 and shape each into about a 10-cm (4-inch) hot-dog shape. Place on foil-lined baking sheet and bake in 190 C (375 F) oven for about 15 minutes or until no longer pink inside.

3. Place in small hot dog buns and wrap up to go.

Meet Emily

Clippers o cially soldSteve Ballmer officially be-came the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers on Tues-day for a record $2 billion.

The team said the sale closed after a California court confirmed the authority of Shelly Sterling, on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, to sell the franchise to the former Microsoft CEO. Her estranged husband, Donald Sterling, had unsuccessfully fought the sale of the team he owned since 1981 in court.

The NBA Board of Govern-ors had previously approved the sale.

“Really excited — in a pretty hardcore way — to continue the path to mak-ing the Clippers a better and better basketball team, and

a better and better citizen of the Los Angeles community,” Ballmer told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

Adam Streisand, Ballmer’s lawyer, said Tuesday that Su-perior Court Judge Michael Levanas signed the order authorizing the sale even if Donald Sterling’s attorneys filed an appeal.

“We were ready,” Strei-sand said. “Within minutes,

the deal was signed, sealed and delivered.”

He said even if Donald Sterling seeks an emergency order directing the judge to vacate his order, the lawyer is confident an appellate court would agree that Levanas made the correct decision.

Edwin Encarnacion could be close to rejoining the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup, and not a minute too soon.

The Blue Jays sit outside the American League playoff pic-ture, within swinging distance of the second wild card and a longer way from first place in the East Division. Encarnacion will spend the next couple of days with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons looking to make sure his strained quadriceps muscle is good to go for the pennant race.

“It’s not necessarily what he does here — it’s what he does when he gets back to Toronto, and they obviously need him,” Bisons manager Gary Allenson said Tuesday. “It’s obviously a bat that they can’t wait to get back in the lineup.”

The plan was for Encar-nacion to play three games for the Bisons before meeting up with the Blue Jays on Friday in Chicago. Despite missing the past month, the 31-year-old still leads the team in home runs (26) and trails only Jose Bautista in runs batted in (70).

Rain threatened Tuesday night’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles’ top af-filiate, the Norfolk Tides, but Encarnacion was set to be the

designated hitter for the en-tire game. Allenson said Encar-nacion would play first base Wednesday, with Thursday still up in the air.

Encarnacion took batting practice inside at Coca-Cola Field on Tuesday afternoon as teammates told him to swing as much as he needed. He opted to postpone talking to reporters until after the game but spoke briefly for the Bisons’ radio broadcast.

“I feel great,” Encarnacion said on the broadcast. “I’m just trying to get my timing back and get ready here for getting back to the big leagues and to my team.”

After suffering a recent set-back that delayed his return to the injury-ravaged Blue Jays, the main objective during the final step of Encarnacion’s rehab is to get him to the ma-jors in one piece.

“I don’t know if he’s quite there where he wants to be with his leg there. But we’ll play that by ear,” Allenson said. “Keeping him healthy through the next couple days is import-ant.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Death of Kevin Ward Jr.

Stewart not yet in clear from chargesTony Stewart could still face criminal charges for running down Kevin Ward Jr. with his sprint car, even if the three-time NASCAR champion didn’t mean to kill Ward, hurt him or even scare him.

Though initial findings of the investigation have turned up nothing that would indicate criminal intent in the crash, legal experts agree that does not mean Stewart is in the clear. The NASCAR star could be charged with second-degree manslaugh-ter under New York law if prosecutors believe he “recklessly caused the death of another person,” with negligent homicide another possibility, according to criminal law professor Corey Rayburn Yung of the Kansas University School of Law. Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is one of the stars of the English Premier League, whose new season kicks off this Saturday. Sang Tan/The aSSociaTed preSS

Forget the World Cup — the Premiership is back!

The return of the Premier League this weekend cannot come quickly enough for Eng-lish fans still lamenting their national team’s worst-ever World Cup showing. With the league’s riches, global reach and non-stop drama, it remains England’s projection of foot-balling power.

But as the waning impact of English sides in Europe last sea-son demonstrated, the Premier League’s allure remains under threat from Spain. Gareth Bale left Tottenham for Real Madrid last year, and the new season begins with Luis Suarez at Bar-celona rather than Liverpool.

Liverpool cashed in around $130 million for the Uruguay striker, who is banned from football until the end of Octo-

ber for biting an opponent at the World Cup in Brazil.

“(Suarez) left Liverpool after his time as a world-class talent,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. “But we will move forward.”

Manchester United seems more likely than Liverpool to make a big jump forward. Louis van Gaal has replaced David Moyes, who took over from Alex Ferguson as manager last season but wilted in the Old Trafford spotlight as the team fell from champions to seventh place.

“He’ll find the competition in this league will be different to any other league that he’s worked in,” Rodgers said. “This

is a league where the top team plays the bottom team and, on any given day, you can lose.”

Van Gaal has set about re-pairing a squad he described as imbalanced and “broken” in a summer that has seen vet-eran defenders Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leave and Ryan Giggs retire.

Arsenal’s Wenger opens the season without the burden of failure, having ended a nine-year trophy drought in May by winning the FA Cup. Me-sut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski went on to be-come World Cup winners with Germany, but must now swiftly return to the Arsenal fold.

“It always makes it difficult

mentally to be sharp and hun-gry straightaway again,” Wen-ger said.

It is a challenge Manchester City must also confront in try-ing to defend its second title in three years. By winning the Pre-mier League and League Cup, City enjoyed its most successful season since 1970, but only sus-tained success will confirm the Abu Dhabi-bankrolled team as England’s new force.

Few managers have been as shrewd as Jose Mourinho over the summer. He has generated $115 million for Chelsea by of-floading out-of favour defender David Luiz to Paris Saint-Ger-main and striker Romelu Lu-kaku to Everton.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas was enticed to join Chelsea from Barcelona, striker Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis were bought from At-letico Madrid, and 36-year-old Champions League winner Di-dier Drogba is making a crowd-pleasing return to the Blues.the associated press

Market position

Designed to be an EV for both early adopters and mainstream compact car buyers. Unlike its competitors, the Leaf was designed from the ground up as an EV. It is now the global leader in EV sales, with a 45-per-cent market share.

2015 Nissan Leaf

• Type: Five-door, front-wheel-drive compact hatchback

• Engine: 80 kW AC electric motor with 24 kW Lithium-ion battery (equivalent to 107 hp)

• Transmission: Automatic (single-speed gear reducer)

• Base price: $33,788

Sowing the seeds of doubt

A lot of folks, on both sides of the consumer/automaker fence, don’t think this elec-tric-vehicle thing has legs. Many automakers are send-ing mixed messages. Toyota has even announced that it’s done selling pure EVs.

But you know what? New models keep showing up. The number of people buy-ing and considering them is rising. And EVs remain one surefire way for automakers to achieve the very strict fuel-efficiency regulations coming down the pike in the U.S.

Net result: EVs have put down serious roots. So it’s time to think of them as less of a novelty and more as just another alternative that may or may not fit your lifestyle.

When it launched the Leaf in 2011, Nissan went out of its way to make non-believers

comfortable, with a modern (but not too space-shippy) exterior, and ride and hand-ling characteristics similar to what small-car drivers expect.

Along the way, the com-pany added a new, lower-priced base model and re-duced prices across the board by $3,000. It also gave the Leaf a faster charger, which reduced 220-volt charge time to five hours from seven.

It took awhile to gain

traction, but Nissan has now sold more than 125,000 Leafs around the world and is on pace to sell about 100 a month in Canada, where Quebec is the best market by far. Alberta? Not so much.

While recently testing a 2015 model, I was again re-minded how normal this car feels. The only thing that separates it from similar gas-powered hatchbacks is its si-lent running and above-aver-

age acceleration. The electric motor offers the equivalent of 107 horsepower, but the instant and full torque of electric propulsion translates into good jump whenever you hammer the go-pedal.

Leaf drivers can even use the Internet or a smartphone to control air conditioning, set charging functions, and access data like the charge status of their rides. Like the Leaf itself, it’s the future.

Review. Nissan Leaf EV may seem futuristic, but it looks, handles and is starting to sell like a regular small car

[email protected]

As a five-door hatchback, the Leafis a very practical compact car.

Rome, Italy Those ancient cobblestone streets may add ambience on romantic strolls but they cause bone-rattling havoc for scooters and an uncomfortable ride for motorists. Their surface area is tough for your tires to grip, so cornering isn’t exactly amore.

Tips: “Recognize that nobody cares about the rules,” warns Younghus-band.

“People are going to cut you off and pass you in ways you may perceive to be illegal but they’re not going to get in trouble for it. That’s just the cultural driving style.”

Also, don’t panic if a driver threatens you with a derogatory hand ges-ture. “If someone shakes their first at you, just shake your fist back.”

Ho Chi Minh City This manner-minding Viet-namese city is motorbike mad, with more than 5 million two-wheelers. “I was in a massive round-about that had well over 5,000 scooters and there was zero road rage,” says Younghusband. “I didn’t get yelled at or honked at or shouted at once in an entire week. They are the friendliest people, and the driving culture is amazing as a result.”

Tips: “Make absolutely no sudden movements. People can blindfold themselves and walk across the road with pedestrians, and do it so smoothly that traffic just goes around them. Just be smooth, be smooth, be smooth, and you’ll be fine in Ho Chi Minh City.”

Lesson learned: “Bal-ance. I thought I was okay on two wheels, until I had to deliver 1,600 eggs and bagged tropical fish on a scooter.”

La Paz, BoliviaIf they filmed a sequel to the Nic Cage action thriller Drive Angry here, it would be called Drive Breathless. In this city, perched nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, pre-pare your lungs for some high-altitude driving. “It’s the most hilly city I’ve ever been in. Everything is just up and down —

there’s no level surface,” says Younghusband.

Tip: Beware of Death Road, an hour-and-a-half outside the city and as ominous as it sounds. It’s a road chiselled into a cliff with no guardrail that slims down to only one lane quite often. “If you meet a vehicle going the opposite direction, one of you has to back up or else fall off the edge.”

Don’t even think about driving here

Port-au-PrincePort-au-Prince, Haiti is the subject of frequent travel warnings by the Canadian and U.S. governments, for good reason.

Aside from the high crime rate, rubble from the devastating 2010 earthquake is still all over the sidewalks, bringing pedestrians and com-merce into the roadways.

Tips: “Stop driving,” warns Younghusband, only half joking. “Get a

taxi to the airport and leave. There is absolute lawlessness, chaos, dan-ger and mayhem.”

“Being a motorcycle taxi driver was terrifying. Being a small-bus driver was terrifying. Being a large-bus driver was ter-rifying. They have every law in the books but are any of them enforced? No, zero. Everything goes, from no traffic lights or traffic cops to first-come, first-serve at intersections — it’s just chaos.”

Lewis Hamilton may be able to handle hairpin turns and heavy traffi c in Formula One racing, but pit him against Don’t Drive Here’s gonzo host Andrew Younghusband in the rush-hour bedlam of Port-au-Prince and our money is on the Discovery Channel’s wheel man.

The aptly named Death Road is just as ominous as it sounds.

Sao Paolo, Brazil Brazil’s most populous city is teeming with an estimated 700,000 moto-boys. These lane-splitting, throttle-jockey couriers drive 100 km/h on the white lines between car traffic going 50 km/h. The risky occupation results in about two fatalities a day.

Tips: “Listening is key,” explains Younghus-band. “Before the motor-cycles pass anyone, they honk. So, if someone is

about to pass you, they’re going to beep their horn, and if you change lanes at that moment, you might kill a motorcyclist.” Also you may want to forgo blindspot checks. “Traffic can stop so suddenly that if you do a shoulder check, the car in front of you may use that instant to stop and you may rear-end them.”

Blindspot surprise: Catadores, massive man-pulled carts, are allowed on every road.

BMW electric car a huge hit in Britain It’s official, the first-ever United Kingdom Car of the Year is ... German. The all-electric BMW i3 city car trumped the Best Supermini category, and went on to claim the title of UK Car of the Year 2014. Alternative vehicles have made a big impression on U.K. car buyers in recent years, said awards managing director John Challen, “and the i3 takes things to the next level. It might be a new direction for BMW, but the i3 success-fully retains the driving characteristics from BMW’s more established models.” Runner-up was the Ford Fiesta ST, which won the best performance car cat-egory. A third-place tie went to the Skoda Octavia Estate and the Jaguar F-Type.

Shift: From hybrids, technology, new vehicles and the environment, to saving money at the pumps

Tesla to add third model aimed at entry-level buyersCalifornia automaker Tesla says it will build an entry-level model to complement its Model S and Model X electric vehicle lineup. A 2017 release date has been set. CEO Elon Musk hasn’t revealed performance details, but says the Model 3 will have its own platform and will sell for about $40,000 in Canada. He told Britain’s Auto Express maga-zine he expects the Model 3 to have a range of more than 300 kilometres and deliver performance “similar” to the current Model S. Rather than borrowing from the Models S and X, Auto Express says the Model 3 will be based on an entirely new platform. Tesla engineering chief Chris Porritt, formerly of Aston Martin, will lead the development effort. All stories And photos from wheelbAsemediA.com.

World’s fastest production electric vehicle prepares for launch Detroit Electric, the now-international electric-vehicle manufacturer, is finalizing dynamic testing of its SP:01 pure-electric sports car at a facility in Europe, ahead of its introduction into world markets, including North America. The maker of the light-weight, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, open-top sports car says it will “thrill” the electric-vehicle market with its high performance and sports-car dynamics. The latest version of the SP:01 has seen additional development work carried out by Detroit Electric’s engin-eers and designers since a pre-production version of the vehicle was revealed at media events in Detroit and Shanghai, China, last year. Further details of the car and of Detroit Electric’s production and sales plans will be announced in the coming weeks.

The BMW i3 is UK Car of the Year. The all-electric car was lauded formaintaining the driving characteristics of traditional Bimmers.

Now that the Model X is nearing production, Tesla is planning a third model, with a price of about $40,000.

Shift points

• Tesla has opened its first Canadian Supercharger station in Squamish, B.C., on the Sea-to-Sky High-way between Vancouver and Whistler. Tesla’s West Coast charging network now provides EV drivers the ability to run to Whistler from San Diego, says technology watcher, Gizmag.

• British publication Autocar recently drove a Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid sedan from northern Africa to the United Kingdom on a single tank of diesel fuel; that’s 1,960 kilometres without refuelling. The bone-stock car was fitted with the optional 21.1-gallon fuel tank.

• Volvo has developed a first-of-its-kind dual-clutch automated manual gearbox for heavy trucks that not only maintains even engine torque through-out its range, but boasts lightning-quick shifts for a more comfortable ride.

The Detroit Speed SP:01 is being billed as one to “thrill” with its sports-car handing and speed.

After decades of affordable sports sedan supremacy, Nis-san’s Maxima entered its latest generation as a larger and more accommodating car.

To the Maxima’s original reci-pe for a snotty V6 and front-drive performance, the new model turned the dial up on luxury, connectivity and feature content, while maintaining a sensible level of hot-rod performance and firepower.

Second gear. 2009 to 2014 Nissan Maxima

justIn [email protected]

The test drive

Maxima cuts curves, shifts like butter

contributed

Although Nissan’s been using the CVT transmission for years with minimal issues, shoppers are advised to be on the look-out for signs of trouble.

Limited throttle response, limited performance, a whin-ing sound, any unwelcome sensations during shifting (in-cluding banging or lurching) are all good reasons for further investigation.

The CVT should deliver power smoothly at light, mod-erate and full throttle.

Have a Nissan mechanic check the CVT fluid level (there’s a special procedure to do it properly), budget for a fluid change if you’re unsure when one was last performed, and ensure the model you’re considering isn’t running an aftermarket radiator (perhaps installed after a collision), as these may not provide enough cooling to the CVT transmis-sion.

According to many owners, a Check Engine warning light

What owners like

Build qual-ity, handling and steering response, an

attractive cabin, plenty of space, a generous trunk and a slick navigation sys-tem were all highly rated. Maxima strikes an ideal balance of handling and comfort on highway drives and winding roads alike.

Engines

The sole engine is a 3.5-litre V6 that generates 290 hp and 261 lb.-ft. of

torque. The transmission has no gears to shift, so it delivers power on an end-less surge with no pauses. Drivers can call up quick and precise simulated shifts using paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

What owners dislike

Some owners wish for a manual trans-mission option, saying the CVT

takes away some of the sporty edge of the engine. Higher-than-expected lev-els of wind and road noise were also reported.

The verdict

With a healthy transmis-sion and passing a few fairly simple checks for the more commonly reported issues, the Maxima looks like a solid used-sedan bet. With Nissan’s experience with its V6 engine and CVT technology, a healthy and properly maintained model should pose no major issues for years to come.

is likely caused by a loose gas cap.

But get a computer scan to ensure there are no other trouble codes.

While driving over a variety of surfaces at various speeds, be sure to listen to the suspen-sion system for any unwelcome popping, squeaking, clunking or other troublesome sounds.

Sudoku

Horoscopes by Sally Brompton

AriesMarch 21 - April 20When talking with others today steer clear of emotional and controversial topics. The more people get worked up about what they believe, the more you should keep your distance.

TaurusApril 21 - May 21If you fi nd yourself torn between loved ones and work today the best thing to do is to make a decision and stick to it.You can’t please everyone.

GeminiMay 22 - June 21 The planets will help you make the break you have been dreaming of, the eff ort must come from you. If you don’t make that move now, when will you make it?

Cancer June 22 - July 23 You may lose your temper with someone who lets you down and they deserve it. Don’t feel guilty if you go over the top because that seems to be the only language they understand.

Leo July 24 - Aug. 23Disruption is likely but the good news is you’ll have the energy you need to deal with it. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start making things happen.

Virgo Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Don’t worry if you fall out with someone, because you’ll be friends again before you know it. Everything seems more important than it actually is.

LibraSept. 24 - Oct. 23You are unlikely to be tactful with people whose views and opinions you disagree with but that’s OK because you are as entitled to your viewpoint as they are to theirs.

ScorpioOct. 24 - Nov. 22You have a rep for keeping your head in diffi cult situations and it’s a reputation that will be called on today. Whatever it is that excites other people, it won’t move you in the slightest.

SagittariusNov. 23 - Dec. 21A crisis has almost reached breaking point and what happens today and tomorrow will take it over the top. If a relationship is on the slide don’t waste time trying to save it.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 20You will clash with someone over money today. Your instinct will be to fi ght to get back what is yours but after a while you may come to the conclusion that it’s not worth the eff ort.

AquariusJan. 21 - Feb. 19Others may be rushing around but you don’t have to follow their lead. It’s meaningless activity, designed to make lazy people look busy. Stay focused.

Pisces Feb. 20 - March 20Some things are worth fi ghting about, others aren’t. Over the next few days get serious about where you draw the line.
