Beyond Tuesday

‘Yes’ vote doesn’t mean it’s over Even if voters approve of the agreement on Tuesday, it does not mean Revere is guaranteed a resort casino.

Mohegan Sun is compet-ing with Wynn Resorts, which is planning a $1.6 billion project in Everett.

Everett voters already approved of the plan there during a vote in June.

If the vote fails, it means Wynn would not have com-petition for the eastern Mas-sachusetts casino license. If the plan succeeds, it means the state gaming commis-sion will have to determine which gaming company gets the license.

A decision is expected at the end of May.

“We’re hoping everyone makes the right choice,” Etess said.

A last roll of the dice for Revere on casino

As Revere residents prepare to head to the polls on Tues-day for a final roll of the dice, both sides on the city’s casino issue feel they have the odds in their favor.

Voters in Revere on Tues-day will decide whether to approve of a host community agreement with Mohegan Sun on a $1.3 billion resort casino at Suffolk Downs. It is the second time Revere residents have been asked to vote on hosting a casino in their city.

“We really feel good about it,” said Mohegan Tribal Gam-ing Authority CEO Mitchell Et-ess. “It passed pretty well last time, but I think we’ve run a pretty thorough campaign and we’ve been getting the message out there.”

On the last weekend day before the special referen-dum, both sides held rallies on Sunday to urge people to get out and vote.

The group Friends of Mohe-gan Sun, which has received $400,000 from the gaming company since January, held a rally that resembled more of a luncheon at the Joseph Mot-tolo VFW hall in Revere.

Casino supporters were given T-shirts and sat at large round banquet tables where they ate a lunch of chicken fingers, chowder and roast beef sandwiches from Kelly’s.

Besides executives from

Mohegan Sun and Suffolk Downs, Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo also attended the pro-ca-sino rally. He spoke with some of the people as they ate and shook hands.

Earlier Sunday, hundreds of casino opponents marched from the Immaculate Concep-tion Church to Revere City

Hall. Led by a marching band, the group held signs and chanted “No casino.”

“If you asked us back in January if we thought we could beat this, we would say probably not. But since then our confidence has been su-per boosted and we’re feeling more and more confident that we have a chance and can beat this,” said Joseph Catricala, a co-chair of the group Don’t Gamble on Revere.

Lifelong Revere resident Linda Aufiero said her fam-ily suffered from alcohol and gambling addictions and feared those problems would impact others in the commu-nity.

“Our family suffered a lot,” she said.

Both sides make the same case for and against the casino that they did before the No-vember vote. Supporters said the casino would mean jobs, financial comfort and a trans-formation for Revere.

Opponents argue there will be more negative conse-quences than benefits that come with a casino like crime, traffic and robbing the city of its identity.

Rally Sunday. Both supporters

and opponents of

Mohegan Sun’s plan

for a casino at Suff olk

Downs urged people

to vote on Tuesday.

A new vote

Tuesday’s vote was required

after the Massachusetts Gaming

Commission urged the city to

hold it.

• In November, voters in East Boston rejected an initial casino plan while voters in Revere approved of it. Suff olk Downs stretches across both communities. After that vote, Mohegan Sun joined with

Suff olk Downs and shifted the plan to the Revere side of the track.

• The commission granted a waiver to Mohegan Sun in December as it considered the outcome of the split vote.

• Revere voters approved of the initial agreement by a vote of 6,566 to 4,232.

Boston-area commuters can now simultaneously contribute to environmental sustainability and provide U.S. military ser-vicemen and women with the ability to connect with loved ones by simply dropping their old cell phones into collection boxes at the MBTA.

On Friday, the T installed two drop boxes at North Sta-tion’s commuter rail concourse, which will collect cell phones for the nonprofit organiza-tion Cell Phones for Soldiers. The charity was founded in 2004 by Norwell siblings Rob-bie and Brittany Bergquist, who

were 12 and 13 at the time. The MBTA started internally collecting cell phones for the charity in 2012, and has since racked up more than 4,000 phones and provided 45,000 minutes of talk time for soldiers overseas, MBTA Sustainability Specialist Tim Lasker said.

Given the program’s previ-ous success, T officials figured it was time to spread the opportu-nity to passengers, Lasker said.

“It’s really a shot in the dark. We don’t know how many [phones] we’ll collect. We’re just hoping to really encourage people to do it,” said Lasker. The cell phones will go to a company that refurbishes them, then sends money to provide pre-paid call-ing cards with phone min-utes for soldiers overseas.

Drop some calls

The drop boxes will be at North

Station’s commuter rail concourse

for two months, and then will be

rotated at two-month intervals to

South Station, Back Bay Station,

then back to North Station.

• “We found that when you have a drop box like this, and it is

there all the time, it becomes part of the woodwork. If we move it around, people will hopefully pay attention,” said Lasker.

• For more information on the project, visit www.cellphones-forsoldiers.com.

Report: Beacon Hill rejects sidewalk fi xes for disabled

A Beacon Hill commission rejected a plan by the city to change the neighborhood’s sidewalk ramps to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in part because of the way it would look.

The Beacon Hill Ar-chitectural Commission in December rejected the city’s proposal to install 259 pedestrian ramps with tactile warning strips, according to the Globe. If it’s not approved by the end of next month, the city will lose more than $500,000 in federal grants.

Those who oppose the city’s effort said they would rather have granite ramps

rather than concrete, and also granite tactile strips rather than the yellow or terra cotta-colored ones used elsewhere in the city.

“If you look up the hill with them, all you would see were yellow intersections,” Steve Young, chairman of the board of the Beacon Hill Civic Association told the Globe. “That doesn’t meet the his-toric requirements.” METRO

Governors from both U.S. po-litical parties plan to talk to President Barack Obama today about preventing potential cuts to National Guard units, several governors said on Sunday.

“In downsizing the military, we want to make sure that re-serve and National Guard is pro-tected in our country,” Connect-icut Gov. Dannel Malloy said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“I’m going to have that dis-cussion with the president to-morrow,” Malloy, a Democrat, said.

Several appeared on Sun-day morning talk shows to talk about potential cuts to the Na-tional Guard, a reserve force that is part of the Army but serves state governments often at times of crisis, such as during

floods or after hurricanes. The budget deal Congress

reached in December blunted the effect of the across-the-board cuts that had been expected to hit military pro-grams, but the agencies are still expected to reduce spending.

Another governor, Republi-can Scott Walker of Wisconsin, echoed Malloy’s comments on “Fox News Sunday.”

“We’re going to talk about the National Guard,” Walker said when asked what he planned to discuss with the president.

“I think there is com-mon agreement among all 50 governors that we shouldn’t go back to pre-9/11 stan-dards when it comes to the National Guard,” he said. REUTERS

Maria von Trapp of ‘Sound of Music’ fame dead at 99

Maria von Trapp, a member of the Austrian family whose escape from Nazi Germany and subsequent musical career inspired the famed musical “The Sound of Mu-sic,” has died at the age of 99,

according to a relative.Von Trapp died Tuesday,

but the news was confirmed Saturday by her half-brother Johannes von Trapp, accord-ing to the New York Daily News. Von Trapp died of natural causes at her home in Vermont, the paper reported.

No one was immediately available to comment at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe,

Vt., or at the original family home, Villa Trapp, in Austria.

Von Trapp was one of seven children of the Austrian Naval Captain Georg von Trapp and his wife Agathe Whitehead von Trapp. The father remarried after his wife died and had three more children with his second wife, Maria Augusta von Trapp, who taught the

children music and wrote a book that became the inspiration for stage and film productions of which made the story a classic.

The von Trapp family left Austria in 1938 and per-formed musical numbers across Europe and the United States before settling to live in Vermont, where they ran a resort. REUTERS

Sun-dimming volcanoes partly explain global warming hiatus: Study

Small volcanic eruptions help explain a hiatus in global warm-ing this century by dimming sunlight and offsetting a rise in emissions of heat-trapping gases to record highs, a study showed on Sunday.

The pace of rising world sur-face temperatures has slowed since an exceptionally warm 1998, heartening those who doubt that an urgent, trillion-dollar shift to renewable ener-

gies from fossil fuels is needed to counter global warming.

Explaining the hiatus could bolster support for a U.N. cli-mate deal, due to be agreed by almost 200 governments at a summit in Paris in 2015, to avert ever more floods, droughts, heat waves and rising sea levels.

“This is a complex detective story,” said Benjamin Santer of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Califor-nia, lead author of the study. REUTERS

‘12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’ win big at NAACP

It was a big Saturday night for “12 Years a Slave” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” at the NAACP Image Awards, which honors top achieve-ments by African Ameri-cans in the entertainment industry. “12 Years a Slave” won for best picture while Lupita Nyong’o won for best supporting actress in the film. Forest Whitaker picked up a statue for best actor for “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and David Oyelowo won best sup-porting actor for his portrayal of his son. Kerry Washington, sporting a big baby bump, took home the award for best actress in a television drama for “Scandal,” with LL Cool J winning best actor for “NCIS: Los Angeles.”

But everyone was a win-ner on the red carpet (and by “everyone,” we mean Idris Elba — hubba). To the right, we’ve highlighted some of the best looks of the night.

would imagine the dynamic being a romantic one or paternal — one of the two. You don’t expect this relationship. I liked that.

That sadistic boss is part of the “new CIA,” as the characters call it.Yeah, but that’s something that kind of developed after. When we filmed this, there was no real explanation for who she was or who she worked for. So that is something that’s come in the process of tweaking and re-shooting.

So the opening scene of you at CIA headquarters was added in later?Oh, I did that a couple of months ago. I haven’t seen the finished film, but yeah, we shot that stuff just recently.

The clothes

Discomfort

You had some pretty impressive costumes. Any particular favorites?None of them were my favorite, I’ll just put it that way. Maybe with the exception of that opening scene [that’s more business casual], that was fine for me to do. What wasn’t fine was wearing a latex dress in the dead of winter in Paris, in heels, running through cobblestone streets. There’s this wonderful designer who made a lot of the clothes. And as you know, nothing protects against the elements like a thin layer of latex. [Laughs]

Amber Heard had a ball play-ing Vivi, the trigger-happy, unsympathetic boss to Kevin Costner’s retirement-age opera-tive in “3 Days to Kill.” Vivi is all deadpan one-liners, stilet-tos and gun-play — a figure right out of the imagination of writer French auteur Luc Besson. But Heard’s character’s high-ranking position in the CIA came as something of a surprise to the actress — as it’s something the actress didn’t find out about until after she’d finished filming.

This doesn’t seem too bad, as far as work goes.I’ll tell you what isn’t bad: driving through the streets of Paris, shooting a gun out of the window while Kevin Costner tries to steer for you. I had this incredible heightened reality that I had to exist in. I’m basically in a latex suit, a full corset, a gun on my hip, shooting another gun with my free hand, wearing a platinum blonde wig and red lipstick — and this is right before I jump out of the car and assassinate a gangster. I look over and I see the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower and I’m in a gun-fight. It was a very interesting way to see Paris that I didn’t quite get from the tour bus.

They don’t usually supply handguns on tours.No. Unless you’re in Texas, maybe.

Your character is in a very Luc Besson world, which seems like a fun place.Yeah, that was straight out of Luc Besson’s head. There’s something very liberating about playing a character that has no respect for the rules and the physical laws and the social norms that the rest of us are bound by. McG is a lot like Vivi in the fact that he’s not really bound by the same standards or stereotypes or rules or expectations that other people are. He was fine having this dynamic of a younger woman like myself being the overbear-ing boss in ways — almost a sadistic boss — to Kevin Cost-ner’s character. And normally you don’t see that dynamic. You would see a younger girl and a man like Kevin, and you

Taming a wild Band of Horses Band of Horses didn’t plan on going on an acoustic tour. They didn’t even plan on releasing an acoustic album. But, ac-cording to guitarist/keyboard-ist Ryan Monroe, it just sort of happened.

“We recorded a random acoustic set opening up for ourselves at the Ryman Audito-rium in Nashville and it turned out really well,” he says. “In the back of our heads we were kind of hoping that we would get an imitation of that. We liked what we heard and it was about time to put out a new record. So we were like, ‘Hey this is cool, let’s do this.’ We kind of planned the tour around the record, which was kind of an accident.”

A happy accident, as it turns out. Band of Horses’ brand of lilting, folksy indie rock seems tailor-made for acoustic per-formance — so much so that it’s rather surprising that they haven’t recorded an acoustic album until now. The delicate melancholia of tracks like “The Funeral” find new, wist-ful life on the acoustic album, for which the band is currently on a limited-engagement tour.

The stops on the tour are all far more intimate venues than those a band of their stature would usually play: smaller theaters and clubs that lend themselves to a stripped-down performance. “To be able to hear each other better onstage is great. We can hear deeper dynamics, and we can better communicate, musically,” he says.

With four critically well-received studio albums under their belts, Monroe says that now, more than ever, the band is in a place where they can make exactly the kind of music they want to make.

“As far as what music to release, and what to write, we feel like we can do whatever we want. We really do believe that notion,” he says. That said, fans can expect some new tricks from Band of Horses on their next studio release.

“We’re going to go back into the studio in April and get down; it’s going to be a conglomeration of everything we’ve learned — good and bad — from our experiences of be-ing in this band,” he says. It’s going to be an electrified record because we are definitely ready to crank it back up.”

Stripped down. Their new album, “Acoustic at the Ryman,” began as a happy accident, but now they’re doing an intimate tour based around it.

Dream collaboration

Monroe, whose fi ancee at-tends MassArt, has lived in the South End for two years. We asked him about some of his favorite artists and the spots he frequents most around town.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you choose?I’d like to write a song with Bill Callahan, just so he could chill me right out.

If you could see any artist, living or dead, perform, who would it be?I just watched a Big Star docu-mentary. I’d like to see all those

dudes playing live, like, in 1976 or something.

Where do you check out live music around here?Great Scott is awesome. I also like Brighton Music Hall.

Yeah, there’s really no bad place to stand there — whereas at the Paradise you have those huge poles.Just looking from the stage it looks like a tricky place to see a show at, but it just has so much history as a venue, a legendary venue.

AMANDA OWEN

Trying to unlearn behavior can be a challenge. Recognizing “girly thoughts” when you have them is a good fi rst step. / AMANA IMAGES

It’s been more than 40 years since Helen Reddy rallied a generation of feminists with her declaration: “I am woman, hear me roar.” Yet despite the enormous strides women have made in the workforce and politics, it appears that many of us are still plagued by our little kitten voices that wish we were thinner, younger and prettier. According to psycholo-gist Dr. Patricia O’Gorman, these so-called “girly thoughts” disrupt a woman’s ability to access her personal power, setting the stage for her to feel victimized by others. Such is the basis of O’Gorman’s book, “Out Your Girly Thoughts and Embrace Your Strength,” which comes out in April. I recently sat down with O’Gorman for a chat about her latest endeavor.

What inspired you to write the book?Having been seeing women in therapy for many years, I wanted to create a term to help women get their heads around what they do to themselves that robs them of power. “Girly thoughts” best described all this energy that goes into how

“My husband had an affair because I’m too fat.” Or, “I’m too aggressive at work and that’s why nobody likes me.” When I give talks, I have women telling how they were late for meetings because they had to do their hair. Men don’t struggle with this kind of thinking, but it diminishes our power, confidence and skills.

How much of girly thoughts are related to appearance? A lot, but we also have thoughts about being smart and assertive. A woman will worry about appearing too smart. A woman will wait a year longer than a man to ask for a raise because she feels like she has to prove herself.

Is it strange to think this is still happening so many years after women’s liberation? It’s still very insidious. Women continue to be vulnerable around power — unlike men, who are vulnerable about be-ing vulnerable.

What does resilience have to do with girly thoughts? With women, we tend to take our resilience for granted. We

DON’T GIVE POWER TO YOUR ‘GIRLY THOUGHTS’

don’t walk around thinking we’re strong, and acknowledge our innate ability to cultivate relationships — which makes us naturally resilient. When we focus on girly thoughts, we don’t focus on how strong we are. If you walk around think-ing you have skills, you walk around with confidence rather than thinking that your hair doesn’t look good.

So what you’re really saying is that we are overly focused on external concerns and need to pay more attention to our internal strengths?Yes, but it’s really about find-ing balance. It’s OK to take care of our appearance so long as we aren’t being held hostage by girly thoughts that keep us in the house, shrinking from ourselves or remaining silent in a meeting. When that happens, we’re losing out on what women can contribute to society.

How can men respond to women and their girly thoughts? They can tell the women in their lives that they love and accept them for who they are.

The sources

Where do girly thoughts come from?

They come from a number of sources — [like] from our mothers, who teach us to be safe. The media also plays a huge role, especially now with social media. We are so concerned with our image and compare ourselves to photos of women that have all been Photoshopped, so we don’t even see how they really look. The level of perfection and Photo-shopping is oppressive to the average woman.

After one of my talks, a professional model told me

she’s plagued with the girly thought that she doesn’t look as good as she does in pictures when she wakes up in the morning. [So] it’s not just the average woman who feels disempowered, but the models themselves. We’re holding ourselves back and feeling like a failure all the time.

DR. O’GORMAN

we look and how we act. It’s how we respond to idealized messages about how to be a good girl — the notion of “she’s pretty, she’s quiet and she doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable.” It’s some-thing so subtle that we all do it every day without thinking about it. My goal is to raise this

to a level of visibility so we can see what we are doing to ourselves. Maybe we can laugh at it, identify it as a “girly thought” and move it out of our way.

What are some examples of girly thoughts and how do they aff ect us?

More advice

Treat your schoolwork like you treat your jobOne of the hardest things about balancing coursework as a student is time manage-ment, because there’s no one watching over you to make sure you don’t procrastinate. When you’re studying, act like you’re at work: Every minute counts, so make sure you’re using your time wisely. You have to become your own boss — you should hold yourself to the same high standards an actual employer would.

But d on’t burn yourself out Be honest with yourself about what you can realisti-cally handle — not everyone can manage working while in school, and taking on too much could mean you end up neglecting your studies. To prevent this from happen-

ing, make sure you give your-self a break every now and again. Time off is important for your physical, emotional and mental health. It’s expect-ed that you’ll have to forego some social activities, but that doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of fun.

Take a night off occasional-ly to see friends and maintain relationships with the people you care about. And schedule in some personal time every once in a while too, to give yourself a chance to catch your breath, check in with yourself and make sure your stress levels are manageable.

As hard as it might be at times, there are many advantages to working while you’re in school. Once you’ve found a good work/student life balance, you can focus on making the most of your extra income.

Learning to manage your time better between work and school will keep you from falling asleep at your desk. / PHOTICK

Working part-time while in school is an excellent way to offset some of your tuition, textbook and housing costs. However, it can be challenging to juggle a job on top of an already busy student schedule. Here are some suggestions for how to balance work with your studies.

Stay organized

Planning out your schedule is the most important step to ensuring that you stay on top of your schoolwork and your job. Use a calendar that’s con-nected to your email or one that you can download to your computer — or opt for a paper agenda. Whatever you choose,

use your planner to schedule in class times, deadlines, shifts at work, time for studying, errands and exercise, social activities and any other com-mitments you have.

Seeing your schedule laid out like this will help you manage your time well to make sure you don’t let any-thing fall off your radar.

Be honest with your employerMake it clear that your job is important to you, but that your studies ultimately have to come first.

Your boss should already expect this and he or she will probably appreciate your dedi-cation to your education.

Of course, you’ll still need to make sure you’re making your job a priority. However, you can make things a little bit easier on yourself by ar-ranging your work schedule around exams or assignments

well in advance. You should also be upfront with your employer about how many hours you are able to work each week without jeopardiz-ing your studies.

Perhaps offer to work a little extra during peak times — employers will be more respectful of your schedule if you are respectful of theirs.

Treat your job like you treat school

Take your job seriously. Even though it’s secondary to your education, you still need to give it your best effort.

Work hard to learn the job and perform well. Work will be less stressful, and your employer will be more willing to give you a good reference when you decide to leave the job. Plus, you’ll be able to take pride in your work. RIANA TOPAN

Scheduling. Here are six steps for balancing work while trying not to fl unk out of school.

Doing double time

Plan ahead

Be proactive about deadlines Try setting “fake” due dates for yourself for assignments and exams a couple of days ahead of the real deadlines and aim to have your essay, report or studying completed

by the earlier date.Following this method,

you’ll always have a buff er period if you fall behind, or you can use that time to review your notes again or proofread your assignment one last time.

You should also start work-

ing on projects as soon as you get them. Not only will it help you get a good sense of how much time you need to set aside to complete the assign-ment, it will also eliminate the anxiety that comes with a looming deadline for some-thing you haven’t started yet.

When I recruited for hiring managers and they gave the green light to extend a job of-fer to a candidate with a nearly identical résumé to other job seekers, out of curiosity I asked, “Why did you select this candidate over the others?” It was always based on liking one candidate the most or having a personal connection to some-

They aren’t only looking for solid credentials: They’re seek-ing the right fi t within their group dynamics, someone to roll up their sleeves with during an intense monthly deadline, someone to grab a beer with after cranking out that report.

Establishing a connection is key to standing out.

Research interviewers’ profi les on LinkedIn prior to the interview. Do you have a connection of perhaps a for-mer employer, mutual contact, alumni association or personal interest? Also, during the in-terview you can make small talk about the weather, current events, vacations or sports to fi nd a connection.

one who referred them. Yes, it’s all subjective from

interviewers’ points of view. But it boils down to landing the most “likes.” Here are three ways to rise above the pack:

Breathe

Breathing helps you to put your best foot forward. Exud-ing the “it” factor starts with having a firm handshake, look-ing everyone in the eye, smil-ing and appearing confident and at ease, as if you already received two job offers this week. Consider the alterna-tive: If you appear too stoic or nervous, that won’t convey the pleasant personality you’re going for.

Take three deep breaths for five seconds to clear your mind and get centered before you open the front door of a poten-tial employer’s office. This sets the tone for the interview; it says you’re in the zone. Don’t think about potential interview questions and answers. Focus on deep breaths instead. This can give you a significant edge;

countless candidates arrive flustered due to the weather, their commute, anything — they don’t take time to get grounded by mentally freshen-ing up.

Take an improv class

From the first moment you have an initial conversation with a recruiter to after you exit the interview itself, you’re being judged. Your candidacy is based on your whole package

and every interaction: emails with the recruiter to schedule the interview, your CV, your cover letter, the interview itself, your behavior in the elevator. Even your thank you note is being evaluated.

Each interaction is an op-portunity to shine. Taking an improv class can help. You’ll become immersed in the moment by thinking quickly on your feet without second-guessing. This will serve you well during tough interview questions, too.

Improving your Web presence will help your job search. COLOURBOX

When Google, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook make your digital footprints visible to recruiters and selection committees, you can assume your online presence is being searched, creeped and crawled on a regular basis.

It sounds creepy, but those digital traces that we leave behind in social status updates, Instagram photo shares, blog comments, Amazon.com and eBay reviews are easy for some-one to recover with a little digital sleuthing.

Altogether this “small data” cumulates in a rather random online story about you — but is it accurate?

To tell a different story about yourself, one more rel-evant than that which Google’s algorithm compiles, you’ll need to be proactive. Consider taking the following steps to add a new and more meaning-ful, useful and current story about yourself for recruiters, event planners, headhunters, advisory boards, talent scouts and award committees to discover:

Write a new storyLaunch that blog you’ve always thought about. Don’t know how to write code? Show, don’t tell

Communicate your story visually. The truism that great images speak a thousand words has never been more relevant than today, with the rise of Instagram, Pinterest and Vine. safe) content to tell a story about your lifestyle, work style and values — including the im-portance of work-life balance.

Make it personal

Purchase your vanity domain. In fact, purchase all of them. Protect your good name by grabbing your .com, then pick up your .ca, .net, even your .guru (yes, this is available soon). Name often misspelled? Purchase that one too. Have a super popular name and someone else has already registered it? No problem. Con-sider branding yourself with a signature (even trademarked) title (e.g., LindaLifeCoaching, DesignByDave, FredFixIt), your city (MikeWardTO), a professional suffix (DrTim, ProfessoryGary) or certification (JimChenCFA). Looking for a graduation present for some-one in your family? Gift them their domain names.

There’s one more reason to flex your digital creativity and mark your territory online. Taking charge and telling your story, documenting your special projects and passions, illustrating your goals and aspirations — these are all a total confidence boost. Actively maintain your online presence and the bonus is you’ll be re-minded of just how far you’ve traveled on your personal career journey.

Fully employed or not, and especially if you work in a field currently experiencing a skilled labor shortage or skills gap, you just may be the passive “star talent” candidate a recruiter is searching high and low for today online. As employers follow your digital footprints — and they will — be sure you’re one step ahead with an online story you’re proud of. SIDNEYEVE MATRIX

Earth in fl uxRe: ‘Long-term data tell

diff erent story on climate change’ (Metro, Feb. 21-23) I would like to point out that our average temperature today is built upon daily temperature readings taken since 1865.

During any given period since that time, average tem-peratures will rise and fall. It’s averaging these numbers that allow us to arrive at the “norm.” Now, just because the winter of 2013 was a very warm doesn’t mean that temperatures will continue to rise just as because the winter of 2014 has been bru-tally cold doesn’t mean that temperatures will continue to

fall. It simply means that tem-peratures fl uctuate and that fl uctuations are themselves the norm. Further, while I don’t necessarily disagree that temperatures are rising globally, I do disagree with it’s supposed cause and also with its supposed eff ects.

For example: Recently a ship in Antarctica studying global warming was trapped in the ice and had to be saved by ice-breaking ships.

This, and the fact that the Arctic ice is growing, disproves scientifi c predictions from eight years ago that “in fi ve years the polar ice caps will be gone.”

During the age of the dino-saurs, the mean temperature was much warmer than today and during the “Little Ice Age” (1550-1850) the mean tempera-ture was much cooler.

During the former, humans weren’t even on the planet — and during the latter, humans were essentially pre-industrial and therefore could not aff ect global temperature. T. OWENS, VIA EMAIL

They were drafted in consecu-tive spots back in 1998, and their careers followed similar paths. Paul Pierce won his lone championship in 2008 and was named Finals MVP. Dirk Nowitzki won his lone championship in 2011, and he too was named Finals MVP.

But Pierce can no longer call himself a Celtics lifer. Danny Ainge traded him in a mega-deal to jump-start a rebuilding effort last sum-mer. Nowitzki will not suffer the same fate as Pierce. Mavs owner Mark Cuban is dead-set on making sure Nowitzki retires in Dallas.

As the defending champi-ons in 2012, the Mavs snuck into the postseason as the No. 7 seed.

Last season, they failed to make the playoffs. Like Boston, they seemed to be stuck in mediocrity — exactly where you don’t want to be

Jury still out on if C’s approach was correctNBA. Mark Cuban went in the opposite direction with Dirk Nowitzki than the Celtics did with Paul Pierce.

By the numbers

Bruins players bring home three diff erent medals

The United States men’s ice hockey team was unable to bring home a medal from Sochi, but there will be plenty of Olympic colors on display at Bruins practice in Wilmington this week.Patrice Bergeron captured gold with Canada, Loui Eriksson earned silver with Sweden and Tuukka Rask took bronze with Team Finland.

Bergeron was as solid as ever for the gold-winning Canadians, registering two assists with a plus-4 in the tournament. MATT BURKE

in the NBA. But Cuban wasn’t ready to blow things up, al-though he doesn’t fault the C’s for doing so.

“Every organization has got to make their own deci-sion,” Cuban told us. “And Paul is fine. He’s moved on, right? And the Celtics did what they felt was right. If it

was easy everybody would do it. There are no easy decisions like that in this business. The Celtics are a great organiza-tion, just look up at the ban-ners. So it’s hard to question them.”

Now, Ainge must figure out which players are going to be in it for the long haul. Everyone knows what Rajon Rondo can do. And it now looks like a healthy Jared Sullinger is something spe-cial. Are those guys capable of taking the torch from Pierce and KG and maintaining that “Celtic Pride”?

For Cuban, keeping Now-itzki has just as much to do with his skill as it does his overall meaning to the orga-nization.

“I can’t speak from the Celtics perspective at all, but from my perspective, culture is one of the most important things to develop as a team,” Cuban said. “Dirk is the con-tinuity for our culture. So I’d rather give up something — when you blow it up, you never know what direction your culture is going to go.”
