What is a Port? (2/12)

(5/12)

Main Strengths :

• Quality of water and land access

• Synergy between public and private operators

Port anchor in it’s hinterland

To encourage modal shift, a port

must:

- Develop its water areas and

land,

- Be rooted in its hinterland:

=> Have road infrastructure

and rail quality.

=> Host logistical dynamic

partners.

=> Even, become a logistician.

Why develop rail traffic in the Port ?

•To reduce the ecological footprint of transport goods.

• To expand the hinterland of the Port, improve its competitiveness and to

meet the strategic needs of its customers by providing an alternative to the

road.

The Rail mode is a tool for sustainable development.

Complementarity and coordination between the different transport

modes is crucial..

The advantages of developing rail traffic for the Port

Ports are exceptional logistic platforms, combining:

• massive maritime flows

• road stream

• Rail flows

A port must achieve efficiency and organization to split up the

entering flow of goods.

It must be a "catalyst" for modal shift.

The ports’s actions to encourage modal shift

• Have a quality rail infrastructure.

• Ensure operating modes promote productivity and flexibility of

rail services.

• Being able to offer a Maritime Service - Iron.

• Being able to provide its customers with an optimal rail link.

The port has established a Railway Operator: OFP Atlantic

Subsidiary of the Port of La Rochelle, the Port of Nantes and

ECR(euro cargo rail).

Mission:

Boost the supply of rail freight to origin or to a destination port for

any client throughout the French territory:

• Encourage a modal shift,

• Creating new flow of transport to and from the port.

The Port has become a logistics coordinator in itself, with the ability to

direct the flow.

Creating a port rail operator (10/12)

The annual volume of goods transported by rail

increased

+ 88 % in 5 years

• 1,25 Mt of rail traffic in 2013.

• 13% modal share (compared to 9%

in 2007).

• 60 000 heavy weights avoided on

average per year.

• An ambition shared with local

authorities and the State.

To encourage modal shift, outside the port

• Consolidate flows on multimodal platforms.

• Improve emphasis on the transfer of cargo compared to

the traveler.

• Preserve the state of secondary rail infrastructure.

• Organize the development of the service offered.
