    WHEN GOD LEADS REHAB

    ZephaniahPart 2

    Presented byPastor Justin Greene

    February 9, 2014

John Stott writes, There is an urgent need for courageouspreachers in the pulpits of the world today, like the apostles in theearly Church who were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke theword of God with boldness (Acts 4:31, cf. v. 13). Neither men-pleasers nor time-servers ever make good preachers. We arecalled to the sacred task of biblical exposition, and commissionedto proclaim what God has said, not what human beings want tohear. Many modern churchmen suffer from a malady called

itching ears, which induces them to accumulate for themselvesteachers to suit their own likings (2 Timothy 4:3). But we have noliberty to scratch their itch or pander to their likings. Rather weare to resemble Paul in Ephesus who resisted this verytemptation and twice insisted that he did not shrink fromdeclaring to them what had to be declared, namely anything thatwas profitable for them and indeed the whole counsel of God(Acts 20:20, 27). We have to beware of selecting our texts and

topics even unconsciously according to personal prejudice or

popular fashion. The medicine of the gospel has been prescribedby the Good Physician; we may neither dilute it nor addingredients to make it more palatable; we must serve it neat. Norneed we fear that people will not take it. To be sure, some mayleave, but most will respond. People are driven from the Church, commented George Buttrick, not so much by stern truth thatmakes them uneasy as by weak nothings that make themcontemptuous.1

Courage, said Phillips Brooks in his 1877 Yale Lectures,

...is the indispensable requisite of any true ministry ... If you areafraid of men and a slave to their opinion, go and do somethingelse. Go and make shoes to fit them. Go even and paint pictureswhich you know are bad but which suit their bad taste. But do notkeep on all your life preaching sermons which shall say not whatGod sent you to declare, but what they hire you to say. Becourageous. Be independent.2

Zephaniah honored by serving his Word. Neat ... and a nation, continually drunk on its own opinion would enter rehab!

    FROM HOSTILITY TO HOPE

A holy God would lead His people from hostility to hope in threephrases.

    1. They would need to look inward.

Why judgment? They were addicted... to self(v. 2).

Note: Most addicts must hit rock bottombefore they arewilling to change(see chapters 1-2).

    3. They needed to look forward. God would take care of their future.

    Six I Wills:

    1. I will gather... the grieving.

    2. I will deal... with oppression.

    3. I will save... the destitute.

    4. I will transform... shame into renown.

    5. I will bring together... familiesin one place.

    6. I will restore... fortunes, all will be blessed.
