Alternative Breaks

Alternative Breaks is a student-facilitated service learning organization dedicated to giving KU students hands-on opportunities with service work. Every year Alternative Breaks provides service trips to more than 500 students who travel around the nation to complete volunteer work for a variety of organizations that deal with social issues ranging from the environment to poverty. Breaks take place during Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks as well as selected weekends throughout the semester. http://kualternativebreaks.com

Audio-Reader

Audio-Reader is a reading service for people with vision and physical disabilities that render them unable to read normal printed materials. We read newspapers, magazines and books that are heard by subscribers in Kansas and Missouri via closed circuit radio, telephone and other technologies. All volunteer readers must pass an audition consisting of a 100-word pronunciation test and a series of reading samples. First assignments are made based on the volunteer's schedule and Audio-Reader's needs, taking interests into account where possible. http://www.reader.ku.edu

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a non-profit organization that helps match caring mentors with children who need the friendship of a mentor in their lives. Children are referred to the agency by their parents, schools, or other social service agencies. Carefully screened volunteers provide Littles with one-on-one time and attention in their communities and schools. Since 1991, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County has paired over 1600 adults and children. Boys & Girls Club

What is Boys & Girls Club volunteering? Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club takes many forms. Volunteers provide extra support for Program Managers at after-school program sites, individually mentor Club members, lend a hand at special events, and help out around the office. Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas has opportunities to volunteer in Topeka, Lawrence, Overland Park, Olathe, Kansas City, Leavenworth, Atchison, Emporia, and in other parts of Northeast Kansas. Volunteers are a vital part of our team and there are many volunteer/intern opportunities to choose from. Last year our volunteers worked over 116,179 volunteer hours with various programs. You could mentor a refugee, prepare a meal in Shalom House, our homeless men's shelter, or help in an Emergency Assistance Center. The mission of Communities In Schools of Mid-America is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS has become the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization and the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. Douglas County CASA provides comprehensive advocacy for abused and neglected children in need of care and under the protection of the court system. Our trained volunteers investigate, facilitate, monitor and mentor. CASA volunteers develop a one-on-one relationship with the child and make sure the child's physical, educational, medical and emotional needs are being met. Douglas County Special Olympics

Douglas County Special Olympics is a program offering year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. All athletes, regardless of ability, can compete in Special Olympics. Sport competitions are divided into age and skill levels so that each athlete can successfully compete with others during practices, area and state competitions. Over 120 athletes have an opportunity to participate in basketball, cheerleading, track and field, swimming, weightlifting, soccer, bocce ball and volleyball. http://www.dcsojayhawks.org

Family Promise of Lawrence

First Step at Lake View, DCCCA Inc.

First Step at Lake View offers alcohol and drug treatment designed to meet the unique needs of women, pregnant women, and women with dependent children. Treatment interventions include: non-medical detox to help women safely manage withdrawal; intensive short-term residential stays; and extended residential services to prepare for re-entry into the community. We provide outpatient programs in collaboration with Lawrence Outpatient Services. GaDuGi SafeCenter

GaDuGi SafeCenter's mission is to work together with the community to provide service and strength and to cultivate well-being for all people affected by sexual violence. We offer free-of-charge court advocacy, therapy services, person advocacy, and many different kinds of support that survivors of sexual violence need. Volunteers make many of our direct service and community education efforts possible. Volunteer Advocates go through extensive training to provide on-call counseling and advocacy services. Lawrence Hidden Valley Committee

Hidden Valley Camp is one of the single largest tracts of urban wilderness left within the city. Purchased over 50 years ago and managed with wildlife in mind, its main use is for local girl scouts and others to explore the natural world, learn outdoor skills and stewardship of the land. The 40-acre camp owned by a local nonprofit features trails through diverse habitats, restored prairie, wetland, meadow, woods and streams. Lawrence Humane Society

Lawrence Meals on Wheels, with the help of over 110 volunteers each week, delivers hot nutritious meals to the home-bound elderly &/or disabled residents of Lawrence. A diet-specific meal is delivered between 11 -1, Mon.- Fri. to individuals who are unable to leave their homes, shop & cook for themselves and/or have a nutritional need. Our volunteers are delivering more than just a meal, as they may be the only social contact the client has for the day, week or even month. MOCSA

MOPS of Lawrence

MOPPETS: TUESDAY MORNINGS 9-11, 2x MONTHLY. Spend your mornings playing with, comforting, and teaching children, ranging in age from infants to kindergarten. This program allows moms to meet together and explore topics related to mothering, marriage, friendship and spiritual growth. During our meetings our children are cared for by loving workers and volunteers in our MOPPETS area. The kids get an age appropriate program full of play, stories, music and more. Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) at First Presbyterian Church

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is an international organization that believes that moms are world-influencers. MOPS at First Presbyterian Church meets every other Wednesday morning (September through April) from 9-11:30am. Volunteers help take care of kids (6 months - 5 years old) while moms attend a meeting across the hall. Programs and age appropriate crafts are prepared and set up ahead of time. Operation WildLife

Operation WildLife, Inc. (OWL) provides rehabilitation services for injured and orphaned wild animals, and wildlife education for the citizens of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. We are the largest publicly funded wildlife clinic in Kansas, according to Kansas Wildlife and Parks statistics. We receive thousands of wild animals each year, and the release rate averages 69% from year to year - 20% higher than the national average of 49%. Relay For Life of KU

We are looking for volunteers to help us plan and participate in the 2015 Relay For Life of KU! Gather your friends and family and join our 8-hour event to make a difference in the fight against cancer! Through Relay For Life, we celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer; we remember loved ones lost to the disease; and we fight back against a disease that takes too much. Since 2001, Sem Fronteiras charity has intervened in poor and deprived communities, working to improve the lives of women and children. We have provided healthcare, education and social support for this group, extending our support to orphanages, health centers, schools and CBOs. St. Joseph Workers

The St. Joseph Worker program is an 11-month volunteer opportunity for women from 21-30 who are committed to social change. While serving the poor and underserved in the Wichita area, they will be able to expand their skills in leadership, spirituality, social justice and simple community living. StopGap, Inc.

StopGap, Inc. works for youth aging out of the foster care system and other at-risk youth. We have a Youth Empowerment Outreach Program to teach youth the life skills needed to transition to the adult world: how to apply for jobs and the interview process, how to find the right apartment and maintain it, and what is in the lease; how to prepare healthy meals, sex and physical health education; mental health education, and more. The Big Event

The Big Event is KU's single largest day of community service. The Big Event connects the KU campus with the Lawrence community by recruiting thousands of student, faculty, and staff volunteers to work at hundreds of local job sites during one day of service. Big Event volunteers provide a helping hand to Lawrence residents by completing projects in their neighborhoods. The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is committed to changing people’s lives for the better. With community support and an army of volunteers, much suffering can be alleviated. Theatre Lawrence

Theatre Lawrence partners with volunteers to create and deliver extraordinary theatre and education programs that engage community members of all ages and backgrounds as audience members and participants. The Theatre began performances in the mid 1970's. In May of 2013, the Theatre moved into its new home at 4660 Bauer Farm Dr. Theatre Lawrence is primarily a volunteer organization with a small professional staff. Each year over 400 individuals contribute some 26,000 documented hours of service onstage, backstage, and in committee work. Visiting Nurses is a local not-for-profit health care agency since 1969. VNA provides Home Health and Hospice services. We are seeking volunteers to provide the following services to our hospice patients and families: Patient Companion Volunteer - companion hospice patients in home or facility; providing respite for caregivers and companionship for patients; Music - One on one or group opportunities for our hospice patients in facilities; Other - Massage and Hair Cut volunteers Application/interview required.
