State Wildlife Habitat Education Program state contest

The State Wildlife Habitat Education Program state contest is scheduled for April 26. The four high–scoring

senior division participants will have the opportunity to represent Missouri at the national WHEP Contest as the

Missouri State Team. Study resources and detailed information about the event is posted on the WHEP web

page: http://4h.missouri.edu/go/projects/wildlife/whep.htm Any member in good standing may register and par-

ticipate. There is no requirement to be enrolled in a specific project. The contest will take place at University of

Missouri Bradford Research and Extension Center (Bradford Farm) 11 miles outside of Columbia. Pre-

registration is due April 15. Forms are now available on the website.

4-H Foundation Scholarship Applications

Clover Kid Camp—Camp Crowder

Clover Kids are invited to participate in an overnight family camping experience at Camp Crowder and discover the

magic of 4-H camp, June 6, 4 pm – June 7, 4 pm.. Clover Kids with their parents or guardians get to sleep in the

cabins, enjoy camp meals, and participate in 4-H camp activities of canoeing, campfire, challenge games, crafts,

camp songs, leather, and swimming. To register, submit the following before May 15: $45 registration fee which

is for a child and parent/guardian, camp registration form, 4-H health forms for both youth and adult, and the

Summer Food Service Program Form.

Missouri 4-H State Sportfishing Leader Certification and Event Registration

STATE EVENT-Make sure you have marked your calendar for the 2nd Annual 4-H State

Sportfishing Event to be held May 31, 2014! Online Registration will be open from April

1-May 15, 2014 and can be found on the 4-H Sportfishing website:

http://4h.missouri.edu/go/projects/sportfishing/

This year the event will be held at the Little Dixie Conservation Area near Millersburg, Missouri (between Fulton

and Columbia). This statewide event has 3 age divisions (Junior: 8–10 yrs. Intermediate: 11-13 yrs. Senior: 14 &

older) and 2 Derby classes (Boat or Shore). There will be a casting contest and a Skill-a-thon (skills and

knowledge) as well as opportunities for youth and leaders to expand their knowledge. Please note, the Missouri 4-

H State Sportfishing event is to all youth. We will award winners of the individual and overall events however,

eligibility to win prizes will only be to youth with a Certified Sportfishing Leader!

LEADER MODULE-Missouri 4-H sportfishing certified leader information is available on the Missouri 4-H Sport-

fishing website (http://4h.missouri.edu/go/projects/sportfishing/). Leaders will submit their application & fee to

the state office and will receive materials (including leader and youth guides, Department of Conservation re-

source books, and more), activities and resources associated with all 4 parts of the program: 1.) Angling Skills,

2.) Tackle Craft, 3.) Aquatic Ecology and 4.) People & Fish.

4-H/FFA HORSE PROJECT ENROLLMENT DUE

The horse member enrollment is due to the Clinton County Extension Office by May 1,

2014.

You must include each horse that you wish to use for the 2014 show year. 4-H/FFA members

may be asked to produce a current project horse enrollment form to show at county 4-H/FFA

shows. State Fair requires 4-H/FFA members to include a copy of their current project horse

STARTER FLOCK GRANT

Goal: To provide a current Missouri 4-H or FFA member a grant opportunity to purchase

ewes for a starter flock.

Reward: One winner will receive a $600 grant to be used to purchase ewes from a current

MSP member and work with this member in a mentoring program. The sheep purchased may be

purebred, registered or commercial stock. Applications are due to Scott Kaden by May 1,

State Horse Judging 2014

Congratulations to the Clinton County Senior 4-H Horse Judging Team capturing

4-Hers from all across the state converged on the University of Missouri campus on Saturday, March 15, 2014 to

test their skills in Horse Judging, reported Ben Gallup, State 4-H Youth Specialist. With the help of Stephens

College, the Junior Paint Association and Rocky Mountain Horse owners we were able to offer ten classes for the

members to evaluate and judge. Members have to have understanding of the breed standards plus they are asked

to explain how they place the horses in a class. “Judging in any domain provides 4-H youth a tremendous oppor-

tunity to develop critical discernment and public speaking skills. I am very proud of these young ladies and their

Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share, and work in

groups, explore their interests, and build self-confidence.

Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity, information or other materials

that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that

introduce five to seven-year olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing.

Grilled Vegetables

Help children eat healthy vegetables! Asparagus is a vegetable that is

in-season during April and May. It is low in calories and is a good source

of potassium, fiber, and vitamins B and C. It can be eaten raw or

cooked. Grill a variety of vegetables (asparagus, zucchini, mini carrots,

peppers) using the recipe below and allow Clover Kids to sample them.

Supplies:

· 1 pound fresh vegetables

(asparagus, zucchini circles, mini

carrots, pepper strips)

· ¼ cup fat free Italian salad

dressing or 4 tablespoons

· Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Wash vegetables. Place the Italian salad dressing or the vegetable oil,

salt and pepper in a large food storage bag. Add the vegetables to the

bag and toss to coat them. Place vegetables on a pre-heated indoor,

electric grill. If using an outdoor grill, place vegetables in a foil pan to

cook or thread bite size pieces on a skewer. Turn the vegetables each

minute. Cook until tender crisp – only a couple of minutes.

MOVE promotes physical activity and

encourages youths to engage in a wide

range of activities such as walking, bik-

ing, running, swimming, dance, taekwondo,

and gardening.

Using a paper tracking system youths

and their families can “log” the number

of minutes they accumulate throughout

the year and during the competitive

component of the MOVE program from

February 1 – April 30. 4-Hers can enroll

as individuals and/or as part of a

team. An individual MOVEr may also be a

part of a team. A team can consist of a

family or members of a 4-H club or

MFA Western Saddle

Awarded to Kate Wright of Clinton County

Kate Wright from Clinton County has been awarded the 2013 MFA

Western Saddle. While she joined the Clinton County “Posse” 4-H club

just 3 years ago, she has excelled at State Horse Bowl and State Horse

Hippology reported Debbie Davis, Clinton County 4-H Specialist. Kate is

a very deserving person shared Davis. Kate reported in her application,

“I myself am different than I was four years ago. Part of it is because

of the confidence I have gained through my 4-H projects”.

MFA, Inc. has provided a free western saddle for the past 23 years to a

Missouri 4-H youth 14 and over. The saddle was awarded by Janice

Spears; MFA feed products marketing manager, on Saturday, March 15,

at the 4-H State Horse judging annual contest.

County 4-H News

Clinton County Council 4-H Meeting

The Clinton County Council 4-H Meeting of March 6th was called to order at 7 pm by President Jensen Mayes. Vice President Tana Anderson led

the pledges. The minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed. Tana Anderson moved to approve the minutes as read, with Gwen Mayes

seconding. The treasurer's report was also reviewed. The motion to approve the report as read was made by Becky Black, and Tammy Adam

seconded the motion. Dale Hunsburger also mentioned that there are several bills that need to be signed.

In unfinished business, there were not enough participants to form a team for the Youth Civic Leaders Summit this year, but we will plan on

working on a project throughout the year to enter next time. Jensen Mayes said that he would talk to some people on the state level about

changing the date for the event, since it always falls on our county Contest Day.

Responsibilities for Contest Day were discussed. The Hustlers are in charge of setup the day before, and Dale and Debbie will be at the Middle

School at 3:45 to assist with that project. The Posse will be running the registration table, and will need 3 parents to volunteer. Jensen Mayes

will be running the judging room. Sydney Orton and Jared Groebe volunteered to help during Jensen's speeches. Each club is bringing a case of

water and a food donation for the concession stand. The stand will be in the FACS room again this year, since the cafeteria was difficult to

clean up last year. There will be a suggested donation of about $2 this year. The Royalty contest is ready to go, and there are 23 members

registered to compete this year. Keystone is in charge of cleanup after the event. The Dynamites will be assisting the judges, and will bring

them bottled water, coffee, and cookies as needed. There won't be a need for extra help with awards. Becky Black and Becki Wright will be

taking photos, and Madison Ross of the Pioneers will also be photographing the events as a part of her monthly Photo Corps assignment.

In committee reports, the calendars were discussed. Each club still has a few, and we can print more if needed. Debbie Davis suggested that we

have sponsors for future calendars. Each business could have an ad in the corner of a month's page. Becky Black recommended that we request

calendar sponsorships at the same time as the fair sponsorships so that we are only soliciting donations once.

In new business, Jensen Mayes gave an update on State 4-H events. Teen Conference will be March 22-23, and Legislative Academy went well.

Debbie Davis informed the group that state dues will be going up January 1st, 2015. They will likely go up from $5 to $16-20 per member. Mem-

bers who turn in their forms and dues for the 2014-15 4-H year before Jan. 1st will still pay the smaller fee.

Sydney Orton mentioned that we have 2 members attending the National Invitational Shoot. Taylor and Sydney Orton will both be going in

June.

The letters to the Fair sponsors have already been sent out, but Dale Hunsburger has more if anyone has a business they would like to send one

to. The Adam family may donate some prizes for the Livestock shows so that we can continue to have physical prizes in addition to the premi-

ums. Shelley McCutchen is also working on getting the prizes for the county horse show.

The fair t-shirts were also discussed. Gwen Mayes listed off some of the colors that have been used in the past, and members suggested new

colors for this year's shirt. Options discussed included lime green, safety orange, heather sapphire, and old gold. Council members should bring

some t-shirt designs to the April meeting to vote on, and colors will also be decided at that time.

The Clinton County 2014 4-H Hall of Fame inductee was talked about. It was decided to induct Rosalie Ingall, and keep Sophie Smith for next

year, with Gwen Mayes making the motion and Tammy Adam seconding.

The Youth Building received some financial gifts recently. The Council received $1K from the Zane Myers family, and another $25K from the

Woodward Trust Foundation. Debbie and Dale have a list of things they are planning to do with these funds, such as adding insulation to the

Building.

Discussion moved on to the council budget for this year. It is anticipated that we will be just short of breaking even this year, so it will be ideal

to have some fundraisers. Jensen Mayes mentioned that he hoped to be able to add judges gifts back into the budget, so that we can continue

to show our appreciation to these important volunteers. Different fundraisers were discussed. There will possibly be a Jazz in the Park event

in Plattsburg on the same evening as the Scholarship Dinner. We could have a concession stand out of the Extension Council trailer, and cater

to the people in the park. Also, Tana Anderson suggested that we have a night that we have a “Parents Night Out”. We could have several mem-

bers babysit at the Youth Building and have different activities that would introduce the kids to different aspects of 4-H.

Discussion turned back to the financial gifts the Extension recently received. It was suggested that some of the $25K be used to cover the

part of members dues that normally goes to pay for the Youth Building. That part of the dues could then go to a county 4-H foundation which

could eventually help pay for 4-H camp, and state and national opportunities such as Teen Conference, etc. The discussion was tabled, and a

committee was formed to look into having a 4-H foundation. The committee consists of LeAnne Orton, Becky Black, and Tammy Adam, with

Sydney Orton spearheading their efforts.

Conversation was then directed back to the babysitting fundraiser. Tana Anderson will look into having it sometime this spring, and will present

plans at the next council meeting on April 3rd.

Gwen Mayes moved to adjourn the meeting, and Tammy Adam seconded the motion.

6 Clover Connection

DeKalb County Council– January Minutes

The DeKalb County Council met January 21, 2014 at the Mayville Methodist Church. President Ashton Carpenter

called the meeting to order. Wyatt Smith gave the Treasurer’s report as $7,171.07. Kendal made a motion to void

Achievement Day checks from 2012 that were never cashed. Wyatt seconded it.

Old Business: Fair project premiums – Dale will get those checks out. Cierra made the motion to include Contest

Day premiums from last year in them also. Wyatt seconded it.

New Business:

4H Youth building – Christie Smith will collect 3 bids for new construction 7 repairs then she will contact the

county about possible grants. Debbie gave information about several grants that might be available and said she

and Christie could work on those together.

Debbie gave information about the Horse Judging workshop that will be Feb 8. Deadline is Feb 1.

DeKalb Contest Day was rescheduled for March 16 from March 23 due to conflict with Teen Conference. It will be

at the Maysville Methodist Church at 2:00. Members are encouraged to come with a demonstration.

Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop will be March 28-30 at Macon. Information is available on the 4H

website.

Wyatt made a motion to adjourn. Cierra seconded it.

The next meeting will be April 21 at 7:00.

DeKalb County Wranglers club meeting report

The DeKalb County Wranglers club called the meeting to order on 1/13/14 at 6:30 pm at the Farmers Bank com-

munity room. The clover kids did a demonstration on how to blow up a balloon by chemical reaction with vinegar

and baking soda and putting food coloring in milk. Cole Gotswiller lead the American pledge and Braelyn Wind-

ham led the 4H pledge. Jared Eads read the minutes from the last meeting Saturday 12/14/13 at 1:00 pm. After

the minutes were read, Ashley Brown made a motion to accept the minutes and Ethan Shirk seconded the motion.

One of the projects' that was discussed in the meeting was Horses. Cole Gotswiller gave us a full report about

what happened at the last horse meeting. He said "We went over the parts of the horse and to make it more fun

— they had a pop quiz.

We have a tentatively date set for the 8th of February for our Valentine’s dance more details to come. We are

planning a fundraiser during the ball association tournament. Dalton Strohl made a motion to have a baked goods

sale committee and the motion was seconded by Aidan Spears. The Snow Creek event has been rescheduled for

1/17/14. On the 19th of January, Clinton county will be holding a safety shooting sports clinic.

Treasurer’s report was given. After the treasurer’s report was read, Braelyn Windham made a motion for the

treasurer’s report to be accepted and Jared Eads seconded the motion.

Next month at our next meeting on 2/3/14 Emily Shirk and Braelyn Windham and/or more people will be doing

demonstrations. Christian Payne made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Morgan Tait seconded the motion. The

meeting was adjourned.

Lathrop Shamrock 4-H Club meeting report

The Lathrop Shamrock 4-H Club held their monthly meeting on Sunday March 9th, 2014 at the Lathrop Antique

Fairgrounds. It was a short meeting followed by a fun family game night. Members made cards for all of the judg-

es that helped at the Clinton County Contest Days on Saturday, March 8th. The club deserved a fun night after

working so hard at Contest Days! Members brought their favorite snacks to share. Kids brought their favorite

games to play. The Lathrop Shamrocks will be meeting again on Sunday, April 13th at 5:00 P.M. at the Lathrop An-

tique Fairgrounds. They plan to pick up trash along the highway after the meeting for Community Service. All

members should plan to be there!

Clinton County 4-H Learns to Sew!

Clinton County 4-H sewing project members had a sewing class led by Debbie Davis, with the help of Diane Talley

and Mary Ann Downey. They met twice a week for five weeks in the FACS Room at the Plattsburg Middle School.

Members learned the basics of sewing and had a great time. Their first project was a nine-patch pillow. They

spent the rest of their time working on aprons. The girls all learned so much. Everyone’s apron was a little differ-

ent, but they were all beautiful! They celebrated their final class on Wednesday, February 26th with lots of yum-

my snacks and a fashion show. The girls all had a wonderful time and liked meeting new friends!

Members of the Lathrop Shamrocks 4-H club at-

tended a project fair at the Cameron Community

Building on Saturday, February 22nd . The event

focused on agricultural projects, including live-

stock and small animals. Many animals were on ex-

hibit and experts were there to answer questions

and give information. The event was open to all

FFA and 4-H members. It was very fun!

FFA building from 9:30—9:45 am to sign

State Fair paperwork.

The next stop will be the Superintendent’s

office in Hamilton from 10:00 to 10:15 am .

The last stop will be at the Orscheln’s store

in Cameron from 10:30 to 10:45 am.
