Setting real life challenges that accelerate your development. We understand the importance of learning from your own experiences. Accordingly, throughout the programme The Lancaster MBA encourages you to assimilate knowledge and understanding by taking part in practical assignments and challenges. We call this Learning Through Action, an approach that is integral to The Lancaster MBA experience.

Learning through action The challenges take place within carefully selected partner organisations and reflect the realities of contemporary management. Lancaster identifies the organisations taking part, and works with them to develop a brief outlining the objectives, resources, and deliverables associated with each project. These are shared with student teams (selected to maximise diversity and stretch) who then iteratively refine and ultimately agree the brief with the client organisation.

Most of the challenges are designed to provide 1-2 weeks of intensive ‘in-organisation’ work – analysing situations, solving problems and, ultimately, making recommendations to the client organisation’s senior leaders. In addition to working alongside senior managers within the host organisation, teams typically receive additional support from experienced mentors (including partner-level consultants) who are not in the client organisation.

These mentors challenge you with critical questions on how to approach, structure and pitch your work. Their input, along with the feedback from the client and lecturers, provides some of the information you use in reflection on your professional practice. Each experience provides intense and invaluable learning that you will apply to your career.

In the Full-time MBA, you will undertake The New Venture Challenge (working with a real business entrepreneur), The Consultancy Challenge (within a medium sized organisation) and The Corporate Challenge (which involves you in a significant project or assignment over the summer months).

In the Executive mode MBA, you will undertake The Business Development Challenge (driving a new initiative or project within a real organisation), The Consultancy Challenge (identifying solutions for a strategic dilemma), and The Applied Research Challenge (exploring the depth of knowledge and applying it to address a significant organisational issue, typically within your own organisation).

Because they are real – and not outdated case-studies or artificial simulations – the outcomes of the challenges are important, to the client and you. However, their primary role in The Lancaster MBA is to integrate your pre-MBA career knowledge and programme-based learning into a new and shared work experience.

The challenges provide you (and us) with an opportunity to evaluate your progress in developing as a senior strategic leader. Having completed several challenges, each designed to stretch you in new ways, you will emerge from the programme stronger and more confident, ready for the strategic opportunities of today’s business world.

The challenges vary, according to which mode of The Lancaster MBA you follow.

The Challenges

Learning to understand and influence others. Today’s business world is complex, with diverse stakeholders, competing agendas and ambiguity. Instead of shrinking away from this complexity, you will embrace the opportunities it offers, learning to be a more strategic leader. Similarly, an effective leader is able to call on a broad mix of capabilities, including the ‘softer’ skills needed to understand, motivate and influence others. Unlike other MBA programmes, we’ve recognised the importance of these factors and brought them together into The Mindful Manager – a module that’s totally unique to The Lancaster MBA.

The Mindful Manager Module explores the ‘art and craft’ of management. It is more about ‘how’ you manage, than ‘what’. It extends knowing and doing into being, and connects all of your learning across the whole of The Lancaster MBA, strengthening your cognitive and collaborative skills, as well as your judgement.

The Mindful Manager is not a module you study for a short while before moving on to another. Rather, it is a constant throughout The Lancaster MBA experience. Connecting all your previous career experiences with your in-programme learning, it helps you understand the behaviours, motivations and cultural differences (your own, and those of others) which inform opinions and drive decisions.

Just scan this QR code with your smart phone

and start exploring senior strategic leadership.

“It has been an amazing year. Working with people from different nationalities has been a great experience, and the range of courses has honed my ability to make balanced and effective decisions.”

Tiffany

The Mindful Manager Module

The Mindful Manager emphasises self-discovery and critical thinking. We encourage you to question your assumptions, to develop your practical wisdom, and to improve your judgement and decision making capabilities.

Among its features, you will be asked to create a blog which explores your experiences and thought processes during your time on the programme. We will encourage you to learn from these experiences and the feedback you encounter.

Through this process, and with our support, you’ll find your thinking style evolving to that of a senior strategic leader.

Designed to increase your self-awareness, critical thinking and team-working skills, The Mindful Manager is a richly rewarding and transformational experience that influences you as a person and a professional.

As part of The Mindful Manager, we also engage with senior business leaders who share their own personal journeys: how they arrived in their senior roles, how they drive and sustain success, and how this affects the decisions they’re making today. Some of these who have provided such insight recently include Gil Steyeart (MD of adidas), Nahed Taher (the first woman to be appointed Head of a Saudi Investment Bank, and an alumna), and Kevin Roberts (CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Inc).

Learning takes place in a variety of contexts, including lectures, workshops, small group tutorials, 1-to-1 meetings, mentoring, and teamwork across multi-national and multi-disciplinary teams. On-line, everyone in the community has access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which holds all documents and resources, and acts as a direct conduit to lecturers, tutors, support staff, and mentors.

The key strengths of The Lancaster MBA, lie, however, in collaborative working and practical challenges (Learning Through Action) and on ‘reflective assessment’ (The Mindful Manager) which helps you explore your own particular skills and objectives. We help you assimilate and integrate all of these experiences into an enriching and rewarding experience. During the year, we also undertake numerous visits to the offices and factories of our corporate partners. Similarly, each study tour includes 4-5 organisational visits. In Guangzhou, for example, our students visited both the factory and the concept store of Goelia Fashion, an emerging global brand.

Everyone undertakes three key challenges throughout the year, each one designed to embed learning in a practical context. Unlike other MBA programmes, we source and select all the challenges for you, ensuring their relevance and availability.

The New Venture Challenge

Here, you support a real business entrepreneur to take a new idea to market. Focusing on a ‘live’ project with real issues, this challenge primarily explores business planning, giving you real insight into the entrepreneurial mindset, exposing the processes and the challenges of establishing a new venture.

The Consultancy Challenge

Following intensive consultancy training covering all the ‘soft’ skills typically needed to lead organisational change, you will work with the senior leadership team of a medium-sized organisation. Recent partners include the Brewery Arts Centre, Gyro HSR and Isothane Ltd. Your brief will always involve strategic organisational change, with specific focus on marketing, HR, or operational issues. You will offer consultancy to the business, formulate recommendations and present your findings to the client as well as the Faculty. This challenge explores the nexus of your teamwork and leadership styles, as well as your capacity for orchestrating strategic change.

The Corporate Challenge

Taking place over the final ten weeks of the programme, this challenge explores your ability to bring your learning to a sophisticated project or assignment. This involves working in a team on a project for a global organisation, recent partners include PwC, BASF, Vodafone, EDF Energy and the Co-operative Group. Depending on needs, some students may prefer to substitute this option with either a research-based dissertation or a self-sourced MBA internship with a recognised multi-national organisation.

The Mindful Manager Support with Career Advancement

Focusing on the ‘softer’ skills essential for effective leadership, The Mindful Manager module runs through the whole MBA, and gives you the tools to support lifelong learning and development. By encouraging reflective thinking, it connects all your experiences and leads you to understand the dynamics which shape and influence business today.

As part of this module on the Full-time MBA, you will take part in regular interactive sessions with CEO’s and senior managers from a variety of businesses who will involve you in the current issues and challenges of their organisations.

The Lancaster Full-time MBA is a global programme, designed to enhance your international outlook.

As well as living and studying in a diverse, multi-cultural community, you have a number of opportunities to broaden your awareness of the cultural differences impacting organisations. These include ‘International Business in Context’, a one week intensive study tour of an emerging economy. Recent tours have included China, India, Turkey and the Czech Republic. You can gain further international experience by joining our Global MBA classes or participating in study opportunities with world-class partner institutions.

There’s a real sense of community, on campus and in the town. You feel safe, but not secluded.

Located just 3 miles from the campus – and easily accessible by a bus service running every 10 minutes – Lancaster is a small, friendly city with a population of 40,000 people. Though it has a long history, reflected in cobbled streets and 12th century castle, it is very much a modern city with a full range of shops and entertainments, including museums, multi-screen cinemas, and an active independent arts scene.

As you would expect, the city of Lancaster and surrounding communities are heavily influenced by student needs, with restaurants catering for most tastes and budgets (from South American and European to Far Eastern and Vegetarian). Much of the centre is pedestrianised and traffic free, creating a real sense of safety and space to realise your potential.

For those of you who enjoy the outdoor life, Lancaster is well placed for exploring the beautiful English Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. For those seeking a more cosmopolitan experience you can train into the centre of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London in just over two hours.

Lancaster University Management School is home to 13,000 students, all studying on an attractive campus covering 360 acres of landscaped parkland. Think of it as a small town with a focus on education. And just like a town, the campus has a huge range of facilities, from shops and banks, to a post office, travel agent and petrol station. Leisure facilities are excellent, with a cinema, theatres, cafés and restaurants, as well as a £20 million state-of-the-art sports centre.

Lancaster has recently invested £420 million in enhancing the campus, and offers over 1,000 computers, Wi-Fi access and high-speed broadband, as well as sophisticated on-line databases, a world-class library (also accessible on-line), and e-learning environments.

You will spend a lot of your learning time in the purpose-built MBA suite, which is open exclusively to The Lancaster MBA students 24 hours a day, all year round. It is primarily a work and meeting space laid-out in a modern hot-desking format. However, it also includes break-out areas, an MBA-specific library, and all the necessary office equipment for your use. The MBA suite and dedicated lecture theatre is set in the main Management School building, which includes additional break-out spaces and a popular coffee bar (The Hub).

Most Full-time MBA students live on campus in Graduate College. Designed for mature postgraduates, it has large rooms with en-suite facilities, internet access and its own lecture theatre, boardroom, and resource and study area.

The Lancaster MBA www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/mba

Classes typically number 30 to 40 students, representing a full spectrum of professional disciplines in everything from multinationals to not-for-profit organisations. The age profile is generally 28 to 45, with seniority ranging from middle management to director level. All classes begin on fixed dates, so you can schedule well ahead. Your classmates will remain the same throughout the programme, allowing you to create deep bonds, and ensuring a consistent and enriching experience.

Four-day modules at regular intervals throughout the year, supported with self-study

Learning on The Lancaster MBA is based around three perspectives (Strategic, Practical and Relational), each giving you insights into your ‘professional self’ and the business world. During the four-day modules, the programme is delivered via a series of highly interactive workshops. These combine input from leading academics with in-depth discussion and a range of integrative activities designed to reinforce learning in a practical context. This practical focus (Learning Through Action) is continued with a series of challenges, while in between sessions you will undertake self-study and online learning supported by our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which holds all documents and resources, and acts as a direct conduit to Module Tutors.

Just as on the Full-time MBA, all learning activities are connected by The Mindful Manager module, helping you assimilate and integrate all activities into an enriching, rewarding experience.

As part of The Executive MBA you will undertake three challenges, each designed to embed learning in a practical context. While these include an assignment in your own place of work, we also ask you to undertake projects with external partners. This gives you exposure to unfamiliar cultures and strategic imperatives, helping accelerate your development and understanding.

The Business Development Challenge

As part of a team, you will participate in a highly realistic and dynamic business start-up simulation, requiring you to integrate learning from across the programme to negotiate the full range of challenges and decisions faced by new and growing businesses. The challenge also includes a live ‘dragon’s den’ style funding bid, which will have real impact on the outcome of the simulation as well as giving team members an opportunity to develop their analytical and presentation skills.

The Consultancy Challenge

In this challenge, we will allocate you to a larger organisation with a culture and operational orbit very different from your own. Your brief will be to find solutions to a live issue, typically involving organisational change or a marketing, HR, strategy or operational problem. You will offer consultancy to the business, formulate recommendations and present your findings to the client as well as the Faculty. This challenge explores your capacity for business analysis, as well as your consultancy style.

The Applied Research Challenge

Here, you will work within your own organisation on an extended assignment, carefully chosen to reflect both your objectives and your employer’s business needs.

Everyone on The Lancaster MBA has a career objective, but owing to the transformational nature of the programme, many people reappraise their career options during the 2 years. Whatever you are looking to achieve – to grow in your current role or explore new pathways – we work with you to support your aims. Throughout this journey, you will have full and on-going access to all our career expertise and contacts – before, during and after the programme.

During all of the four-day workshops delivered at Lancaster University, The Executive MBA is delivered in a purpose-built conference facility on the main campus. Many students stay at the adjoining Lancaster House Hotel, which boasts 100 en-suite bedrooms with internet access and its own leisure club with swimming pool, sauna and gym.

Running through the whole MBA, this module helps develop your strategic leadership skills and capability in a very tangible sense. There is a significant practice-based element using, among other approaches, an external drama coach, while theoretical study will help you understand and deconstruct a range of leadership styles, including your own. You will discover and extend your own leadership ‘voice.’

It also emphasised the variety of challenges associated in leading and working in a new team in a pressurised environment”.

Like the Executive MBA, Lancaster’s Global MBA suits practising managers with the ambition and drive to become senior strategic leaders. Most participants are mid-managers with ambition to join the C-suite or launch their own organisations.

Three-day or four-day residential workshops every two months, complemented by self-study.

The Lancaster Global MBA takes the best of Lancaster’s Executive MBA programme and delivers overseas, largely with the same faculty members.

You will take part in lectures, workshops and small group work. Classes are delivered in a U-shaped seating arrangement, so you can see and interact with all your colleagues.

In between the residential sessions, you undertake self-study, supported by our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which holds all documents and resources, and acts as a direct conduit to programme leaders and tutors. You also work on assignments which address real challenges and issues in your organisation, bringing benefits to both parties.

Just as on the Full-time MBA, there is a strong emphasis on helping you explore your own particular skills and objectives, which we call ‘reflective assessment’, and on collaborative working and practical experience (Learning Through Action).

Combined, these give you different perspectives and insights into your ‘professional self’ and the business world. We help you assimilate and integrate these into an enriching, rewarding experience which strengthens your strategic leadership capability.

Although we aren’t always local to you, we remain fully committed to supporting you to achieve your career goals – before, during and after completion of the programme. We achieve this by working closely with you to create a personal plan of engagement – My Achievement Portfolio – which serves as your MAP to advancement. In periodic meetings throughout the programme, we review your progress and objectives and support you in meeting your goals. We even continue these reviews after you complete the programme, so we are here to help you steer and shape your career for the long-term.

“The Lancaster MBA programme provided me with the tools and experience to elevate my business management skills and increase my value to any organisation. I particularly appreciated the Lancaster based professors who lead their fields in combining academic excellence with practical experience.”

Explore the leader inside you

The Lancaster MBA is delivered around three perspectives – Practical, Relational and Strategic. Here, a Lancaster MBA student, Jessica, explains what these perspectives mean to her, and how they’ve helped support and drive her development. While your journey will be uniquely your own, The Lancaster MBA is transformation for all.

The Practical Perspective

“It has been hard work, but informative! The assignments are well-thought out, and taking part in different groups continuously challenged my weaknesses, triggering quick learning and rapid improvement over the programme.”

The Strategic Perspective

“This perspective taught me the skills and tools needed to deliver real strategic value to organisations. I’ve learned to look at situations in a different way, and to consider wider issues in my decision-making.”

The Relational Perspective

“The valuable insights generated from this perspective improved my understanding of business as a whole, and enlarged my capacity for working in complex cultures. You just can’t help but be inspired by the huge range of people and experience around you.”

on The Lancaster MBA.

You are self-starters with an impressive track-record of achievement in your own disciplines, and you all have the drive and desire to explore your talents further and make a positive impact – on businesses, on your colleagues, and on your own careers.

A world-class programme, with a unique and collaborative way of working, The Lancaster MBA is committed to helping you achieve your specific career aims and objectives. We will only offer a place if we feel our approach is suitable to you, and if you meet the following criteria.

You should possess a good first degree from a recognised university and/or equivalent professional training. If your degree is not from a UK university you will be required to achieve a GMAT score of 600 or above balanced across verbal, written and quantitative elements. You will also be required to complete two short essays as part of your application.

In special circumstances, candidates with other exceptional qualities may be admitted when their GMAT score is marginally below 600, but only if they can a) demonstrate a good standard on the quantitative element, b) successfully complete the admissions essays, and c) meet other minimum language requirements (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE).

For The Full-time MBA, we look for at least three years’ postgraduate experience in a professional capacity. For The Executive MBA and The Global Executive MBA, we look for five years’ professional experience, including managerial responsibility.

If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate your English language proficiency, preferably with an IELTS score of 7.0 or above (with at least 6.0 in each element), or with a TOEFL iBT score of 100 or alternatively with a PTE score of at least 70.

Depending on your location, we undertake either a face-to-face or telephone interview.

You need to supply at least two references, including one from your current and immediate line manager or tutor.

If your background is ‘non-standard’, you may still be eligible for The Lancaster MBA. We review each case individually. For more advice about your suitability, please contact the MBA Admissions.

Full-time and Executive MBA. These programmes begin in September/October each year. Places are limited, and competition is intense, so you are advised to apply online before June (Full-time) and August (EMBA).

Global Executive MBA. These programmes begin at various times throughout the year. Information about the application windows for each location is available on our website.

All current details are available on our website. For The Full-time MBA, we recommend that you allocate a further £10,000 a year for accommodation, meals and personal spending.

We have a limited number of partial-fee scholarships for exceptional applicants. You will find more information on our website.

If you would like any further advice please contact the MBA Admissions office, visit us at one of the many international MBA fairs we attend, or ask one of our local agents. Alternatively, we can put you in touch with former MBA students who can give you an ‘insider’s’ point of view.

Our international quest for strategic leaders. One of the strengths of The Lancaster MBA is the diversity of participants. Although drawn from many different countries, industries and backgrounds, all Lancaster MBA applicants have significant potential, combined with the drive to achieve. Our selection process is designed to identify a new breed of aspirational professionals who want to ‘Explore the leader inside’.
