Bold in its vision and deeply evocative, lisa Wilson’s Lake literally floods the entire performance area to grapple with our fascination and our fear of water. serene. calm. haunting. Menacing. this work reflects on the journey of a relationship, evoking its path from sparkling reflection to murky

depths; from intense beauty to chilling isolation, to utter wilderness and our deepest sense of our selves within the world. lisa’s widely acclaimed independent production, Lake delivers stark captivating theatricality in what is acknowledged as a major new australian dance theatre work.

From the internationally acclaimed sydney dance company comes an exuberant, high-octane fusion of dance, language, sound and light from artistic director rafael Bonachela.

With their award-winning work, 2 One Another, sydney dance company weaves a vivid, exultant and sensual study of human interaction – charting the myriad actions and reactions, gestures and relationships, connections and disconnections that make up a life.

set against a pulsing, pixelated backdrop the piece thrums with a driving, baroque-meets-electronica soundtrack, penned by the able hand of composer nick Wales. shot through with the exquisite poetry fragments of samuel Webster, this is dance at its most engaging and multi-dimensional.

award winning theatre director craig Ilott (Smoke & Mirrors) and designer Penny challen have chosen that last optimistic winter – exactly one hundred years ago - as an electric moment to set Puccini’s beloved story of bohemian life. Popular conductor richard gill directs an ensemble of 13 musicians from Queensland

scottish pianist steven osborne’s recent concerts with the australian chamber orchestra were hailed as ‘the most thrilling musical memory of the entire 2012 season’ (the australian), ‘an evening of pure delight’ (West australian) and ‘a ripsnorter of a performance’ (news local) so it’s no surprise aco’s director and lead violin richard tognetti chose osborne to partner in this rare and intimate recital.

together tognetti and osborne perform three violin sonatas, Prokofiev’s virtuosic and lyrical showpiece, debussy’s powerful last-

ever completed work and the final and most reflective of Beethoven’s violin sonatas.

Part puppet show, part storybook, part daydream, The Harbinger is a classic tale of heroes and villains, centred on a little girl and an old man who find themselves thrown together in the aftermath of civil war. The Harbinger embraces terror and beauty and enchants us with both.

With sophisticated puppetry and physical performance, The Harbinger was written and developed collaboratively by dead Puppet society and la Boite theatre and originally co-presented as part of la Boite’s 2011 Indie season.

receiving strong critical acclaim, Mathew ryan, (Kelly, Boy Girl Wall) then created a narrative and it was remounted as a main stage production to sell out houses in 2012. It has also been nominated for a Matilda award for Best Mainstage Production.

Queensland’s inimitable dead Puppet society melds live performance, puppetry, animation and stage trickery to create a richly magical world where the lines between reality and make-believe fall away. The Harbinger is a gothic tale of solitude, heartbreak and of a time long forgotten.

australia’s world-acclaimed taiko drumming ensemble, taikoz, presents a stunning new work. Introspection, meditative melodies and sheer explosive might sit alongside light-hearted exuberance in taikoz’s Crimson Sky.

the thunderous drumming of the taiko is interwoven with the hypnotic melodies of the shakuhachi and shinobue bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance on the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17-stringed plucked instrument to be played by special guest artist satsuki odamura.

Based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru, Toward The Crimson Sky has been written by taikoz artistic director Ian cleworth, evoking the poem’s sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky.

the program will also feature new works by the two youngest taikoz members: from the peaceful meditation of Solace by tom royce-hampton to the dynamic high energy of Exploration by anton lock, featuring the virtuosity of the drum set pitted against the dynamic high energy of the taiko.

The Beche de Mer has seen better days. What was once a fabulous beach guest house is now an old fibro shack nestled amongst the gold coast high rises, in stark need of renovation…or demolition. It’s also worth a mint. tegan Bennett lives there with her demented grandmother Philomena, and dreams of becoming the successful businesswoman her grandmother once was. one night, tegan’s father comes crashing into their lives, determined to sell the property and share the $2 million profit. It sounds like the answer to tegan’s prayers. But there’s one thing neither of them have taken into account … the strength of tegan’s attachment to the Beche de Mer. In the era before motels and resorts, a holiday at the gold and sunshine coasts usually meant either pitching a tent and camping by the beach or staying in a simple cottage owned by family or friends. simplicity, informality, individuality and increasingly a design that acknowledged a connection to outdoor living were the hallmarks of these humble places.

at a time now when rapid change to the urban fabric of the coasts is taking place, a few of these buildings remain, and hold with them, many layers of memory of this holiday history of relaxation and escape.

Fibro Coast aims to creatively re-engage with the cultural, artistic, and architectural and

design legacy of the humble fibro beach house, and through the work of artists and architects allows us to take another look at these quiet and disappearing places.

the exhibition features the work of artists who have holidayed here from the 1920s and painted views of the beach cottage experience including Vida haley, lloyd rees and ethel carrick Fox. also featured are contemporary artists who have made works that respond to the resonance of the fibro shack within our community including anna carey, Bruce reynolds, rebecca ross and elaine campaner.

highly acclaimed Brisbane artist sebastian di Mauro will showcase a playful sculptural installation of artificial plastic grass and colourful neoprene – the rubbery stuff that wet suits are made of. his exhibition, surf ‘n’ turf taps into some of the aspirations of the suburban australian dream, and acknowledges that a large percentage of the population live on or close to the coast, and that despite being drought-prone, there is a strong desire to create and maintain the evergreen manicured lawn and a ‘little piece of heaven on earth’.

the colourful and expressive artworks presented in Renegades: Outsider Art come from a spectrum of makers: studios supporting people with intellectual disabilities, community care centres, psychiatric settings and outer geographical reaches, or from purely free spirits. these ‘unlikely’ makers brim with creativity without academic instruction, connections to commercial or public art galleries, marketing, critics or art schools. and yet the artworks demonstrate powerful connections and deep emotional insight .

Renegades: Outsider Art is a Kickarts contemporary arts touring exhibition created in partnership with arts Project australia and funded by Visions of australia, an australia council for the arts initiative.

english-born edwin Bode immigrated to Queensland in 1882, aged 23 and is regarded as the first colonial artist to have resided in our region. With poor health unsuited to the rigours of farming, he moved to the gold coast hinterland where he lived a more itinerant life, painting watercolours of homesteads and farms in the emerging communities of canungra, Wonglepong and Mt tambourine.

the exhibition charts Bode’s evolution of seeing the bush landscape of australia as an english emigrant arriving in the region at the time of early european settlement and also shows how he became fascinated with photography, learning the laborious techniques of glass plate negatives to create some of the earliest photographic images of the area. his works show the patterns of early settlement, attachment to the land and a reflection on the displacement of local indigenous people.

Many exhibitions of australian aboriginal art focus on the intrinsic nature of aboriginal culture and its connection to land and place of birth. ‘country’ has come to be understood an all-encompassing word to explain this relationship. What is less understood by many audiences nationally and internationally is the equally strong cultural connectedness to the sea that is very distinctive to the Queensland indigenous experience.

the long coastline of this large state is much more than a defining border in shaping the development and style of artworks here. the

saltwater country is a place of bounty and trade; of conflict and connection and these waters facilitate movement of peoples across vast distances and the tidal and seasonal flows structure the rhythms of the day and the year. Fifteen artists present new works that reflect their cultural understanding and intimate relationship to this potent site where land meets the sea.

during the exhibition period watch out for a lively program of talks, workshops and site specific installations.

Behind the scenes, it takes a lot of people-power, time and money to stage productions, install exhibitions and run programs to develop local talent.

Although we receive government funding and income from ticket sales and sponsorship, we also rely on the generosity of Benefactors, The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Supporters

to help deliver our programs.
