Short’s Brewing Co.: Behind the scenes of this beloved brewpub in a renovated centu-ry-old hardware store, head brewmaster Joe Short concocts inventive beers whose com-plexities have won this self-proclaimed “beer liberator” a cult following. The food menu is simple and well executed, featuring special-ty pizzas, hearty sandwiches, and shareable snacks like nachos and baked mac, which sat-isfy without drowning out the beers’ bold fla-vors. 231.533.6622, SHORTSBREWING.COM.
Lulu’s Bistro: The ambiance at this hip bis-tro is laid-back and lively, with the dining room’s tin ceiling amplifying the happy sounds of clink-ing, clattering and chatter. The artfully prepared cuisine features artisan pizza, pasta, gourmet sandwiches and splurgey entrees like braised lamb shank and hangar steak. Patio seating, wines by the glass or bottle. Great destination for a date night. 231.533.5252, LULUSBISTRO.COM.
Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen: A fes-tive atmosphere and Bayou-inspired decor com-plement a menu starring the melting-pot flavors of Cajun-Creole cuisine: fried green tomatoes, jambalaya, blackened alligator and more. Of course, in the “laissez les bon temps rouler” spirit of the Crescent City, Pearl’s also offers plenty of unique libations and an entire menu devoted to bourbon. Fantastic Sunday brunch, too. 617 AMES ST., ELK RAPIDS, 231.264.0530, MAG-
NUMHOSPITALITY.COM/PEARLS.
Siren Hall: Chef Michael Peterson trav-eled the coast of New England to gather inspi-ration for this elegant Elk Rapids bistro where shellfish take the spotlight. The interior is crisp and industrial; the menu boasts oysters from both coasts, plus pastas, pizza, steak and other temptations. Cocktails and patio dining invite lingering on warm summer nights. 151 RIVER ST.,
ELK RAPIS, 231.264.6062, SIRENHALL.COM.
Cafe Esperance:This seasonal cafe feels like a neighborhood bistro you’d stumble upon dur-ing a European vacation. There’s a simple chalk-board menu, a patio for dining al fresco, and dishes
inspired by local bounty. The wine list is practically endless—in addition to those on the menu, every bottle in the restaurant’s retail wine cellar is avail-able for purchase with your meal. Reservations rec-ommended. 23853 US31, CHARLEVOIX, 231.237.9300,
ESPERANCEWINE.COM.
Rowe Inn: In the 1970s, long before “farm to table” became a movement, this intimate, French country–inspired establish-ment opened with the mission to celebrate the local agricultural bounty. French cook-ing techniques and traditions, a menu that shifts with the seasons, and a spotlight on Michigan’s rich culinary offerings make for an unforgettable destination dining experience.

The Lakeview at Shanty Creek:This upscale-casual restaurant at Shanty Creek Resort serves dinner with a heck of a view: namely, majestic Lake Bellaire sunsets. The dinner menu focuses on flights of small plates (ginger and lemongrass pork dump-lings, bacon-alfredo mac ’n’ cheese, veal ravi-oli), but does offer larger-portioned “complete plates”—always with an eye toward locally sourced ingredients and regional craft brews. Award-winning desserts and stellar after-dinner drinks. 5780 SHANTY CREEK RD, BELLAIRE,

Alden: Find everything from a kayak at Alden Outfitters to the perfect summer cocktail dress (PK’s Place!) in this picturesque village of 19th-century clapboard storefronts nestled on the Torch Lake shore.
Elk Rapids:Break from the beach to browse the boutiques along River Street in this charming harbor town. Plastic wine glasses for the cottage from Nifty Things, perhaps? A set of On the Rocks—real rocks to chill for Happy Hour bevvies—at the Nature Connection? Pack it all up in a Vera Bradley beach bag from Princess & The Pea and it’s back to the sand you go!
Charlevoix: Bridge Street’s Maison & Jardin and North Sea Gallery channel the Euro roots of this waterside city. Add a slew of other shops and restaurants with bon goût, including Scovie’s Gourmet and Edgewater Bistro, and you’ll be oo-la-la-ing all the way home.
East Jordan: The savvy salvaged-furniture style of Deer Creek Junk adds a new allure to this shopping district that has long boasted the must-see Jordan Valley Glassworks and Busy Bridge Antiques and Gifts.
Bellaire: Cottagey home furnishings at Uniquely North blend with fun, eclectic goodies at Sassafras and collectable toys at Little Treasures to make shopping a special day on the town.

Beaver Island is beloved for its expansive beaches, wild island forests and unbeatable seclusion—it is an island, after all, accessible only via a plane ride or two-hour ferry trip—but it was also the setting for an incredible chap-ter in Great Lakes history. In the mid-1800s, a renegade Mormon leader and self-anointed prophet named James Strang led 300 devotees to the island, where he ruled over his indepen-dent Mormon “kingdom” until his assassina-tion in 1856. Following Strang’s death, Irish
immigrants established a new enclave on the island; by the late 1800s, 95 percent of the islanders were Irish, and Gaelic was the com-mon language. (Of the 881 residents in 1880, there were 141 Gallaghers, 123 Boyles, and 90 O’Donnells.) Relics of both the Mormon and Irish communities still survive today: the Mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs are the only establishments open year-round. Of course, Beaver Island offers plenty more to make for a memorable trip, including a pair of historic lighthouses, charter fishing, rustic camping,
remote beaches, and a biological station run by Central Michigan University. Hiking the island’s extensive network of trails is a great way to check out the interior (trail maps are available at the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce; 26215 Main St., Beaver Island, 231.448.2505, beaverisland.org), but a day in a kayak will allow you to explore the shoreline, shipwrecks and many other smaller islands that make up the Beaver Island archipelago (find rentals and guided trips through Inland Seas School of Kayaking; 25860 Main St., Beaver Island, 231.448.2221, inlandseaskayaking.com).

BreakfastThe Lunch Box: The name may or may not be a nod to the size of this cozy joint, beloved by locals and vacationers alike. Breakfast, served all day, is nothing fancy but always delicious: omelets, French toast, biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, freshly made baked goods. Don’t miss the “country-style” eggs Benedict, served over a sumptuous housemade potato pancake. 106 E. CAYUGA ST., BELLAIRE, 231.533.6678, LUNCH-
BOXBELLAIRE.COM.
Moka: A laid-back coffee shop perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast or for those wanting something on the lighter side. Homemade scones, muffins, pastries and quiche complement a full menu of expertly crafted espresso drinks and teas. 102 N. BRIDGE
ST., BELLAIRE, 231.533.6262, MOKABELLAIRE.COM.
Harbor Cafe: This Elk Rapids’ home-town cafe is one of the region’s best break-fast joints. The dishes here are creative and crave-worthy: stuffed hashbrowns, banana-nut pancakes, a bacon-cheeseburg-er omelet, blueberries-and-cream French toast. Closed Wednesdays. 129 RIVER ST., ELK
RAPIDS, 231.264.8700, THEHARBORCAFE.ORG.
Edgewater Bistro: An upscale-casual Charlevoix spot with waterfront views. The options here include traditional break-fast favorites, like steak and eggs, frittatas and several types of eggs Benedict, in addition to some adventurous choices: breakfast pizza, an egg bake with fresh oysters, and the “hangover helper” (a fried-egg-topped, half-pound burger served with a chocolate shake). 100 MICHIGAN AVE.,
CHARLEVOIX, 231.547.1700, EDGEWATERBISTRO.COM.
Family Cruise: Stretching nearly 26 miles from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs, the coastline-hugging Little Traverse Wheelway (trailscouncil.org) makes exploring the region as easy as riding a bike. On your trip you’ll find more than a half-dozen roadside parks to take in a picnic lunch, and numerous beaches with direct access to the water. Find the Charlevoix trailhead, plus parking and restrooms, at Charlevoix Township Hall, 12491 Waller Road. Find rentals at Revolution Bike & Boards. 102 MASON ST., CHARLEVOIX, 231.237.0900,
REVOLUTIONBANDB.WEBS.COM.
Mountain Bike: The well-groomed singletrack system at the Glacial Hills Pathway & Natural Area was developed with help from the Michigan Mountain Biking Association—so you know it’s gonna be good. A fun and beautiful ride for the intermediate to advanced set, with a nice mix of climbs
and descents, and very few rocks and roots. Twenty-eight miles of trail, with plans for future expansion in the works. Find the trailhead on Eckhardt Road, off Bellaire Highway, 2.5 miles west of Bellaire. 231.929.7911, GTRLC.ORG.
Road Bike: For serious road warriors, your ticket to one of the best rides in the region is simply to follow the eastern shore of beautiful Torch Lake, which, at 19 miles, ranks as Michigan’s longest inland lake. The curvy, tree-lined route along East Torch Lake Drive offers relatively flat terrain and intermittent pops of Torch’s bright blue waters. Just be ready to be a little assertive, as the shoulder is thin in places. Our suggestion: Start your ride in Alden on the southeast end of Torch, and bike 17 miles to Eastport at the top of the lake, where the beach at Barnes Park is a great place to spend the afternoon before heading back south. Early mornings and weekdays offer lowest traffic.
MyNorth 2014 Vacation! 9
Jordan River Pathway: This rugged 18-mile trek threads through the scenic Jordan River Valley. Great destination for a weekend backpacking trip; stay overnight at the rustic, hike-in Piney Bridge Campground. Day hikers can do the three-mile Deadman’s Loop; main trailhead off Deadman’s Hill Road, six miles north of Alba on US131. 989.732.3541, MICHIGANDNR.COM.
Grass River Natural Area: A 1,400-acre Antrim County oasis offering a peek into the upland, wetland and aquatic ecosystems of the Chain of Lakes. Seven miles of easy walking trails, plus a wheelchair-accessible pathway. Classes and guided hikes at the interpretive center. 6500 ALDEN HWY., BELLAIRE, 231.533.8576, GRASSRIVER.ORG.
Glacial Hills Pathway and Natural Area: More than 25 miles of trails wind through 12 distinct habitats in this spectacular preserve. Find one of the preserve’s three trailheads on Eckhardt Road, off Bellaire Highway, 2.5 miles west of downtown. 231.929.7911, GTRLC.ORG.
Coy Mountain: This pretty 1.4-mile hike, hidden away from the foot traffic in downtown Alden, is worth seeking out. The 17-acre tract encompasses a 140-foot ridge forested with virgin hardwoods. From downtown Alden, follow Coy Street south for 1/3 mile; turn east on Valley Street. The preserve is two blocks in.
Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve: A simple, mile-long trail circles through this pint-sized preserve, home to a lovely second-growth forest of maple, beech and ash, and a spring-fed trout stream that empties into Lake Charlevoix. Turn left onto Sleepy Hollow Lake off M66 south of Charlevoix; parking is 1/8 mile in. LANDTRUST.ORG.

FISHING SPOTSFrom fly fishing the world-class Jordan River to angling for big game fish in the deep waters of Torch Lake, this region is nothing short of a fish-erman’s paradise—even Ernest Hemingway, an iconic outdoorsman, cut his teeth angling the lakes and streams here. (“Absolutely the best trout fishing in the country,” he penned to a pal in 1919.) A favorite spot is Lake Charlevoix, with multiple arms sprawling out across 17,000 acres to varying depths (about 120 feet max in the main basin; just
shy of 60 feet max in the south arm) to support both warm- and cold-water fish. Smallmouth and walleye hunker down near the East Jordan launch in the South Arm; perch and steelhead can be found at the Ironton narrows; the steep drop-off near Young State Park is a haven for rainbow trout, brown trout and walleye; and warm water at the mouth of the Horton Creek tributary attracts northern pike in springtime and salmon in the fall.
The 75-mile-long Chain of Lakes is another epic angling destination. For trophy-worthy fish,
head to the lower chain’s big lakes, like Elk Lake, Torch Lake and Lake Skegemog, where you can try your luck for record-setting muskie—plus walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike and more. For panfish action, seek out the littler lakes of the Upper Chain, where warm water and weedy bottoms provide a rich habitat for crappie, perch, smallmouth bass and bluegill. Kids in tow? The fishing pier on Lake Ellsworth in Ellsworth Community Park is a pretty, peaceful spot to drop a line.

Rent a pontoon to explore this 19-mile-long, finger-shaped gem; head to the southern end to find a lively party scene at the sandbars, or putter up to the northern stretches for a peaceful, scenic afternoon. Explore Lake Charlevoix: This beautiful Northern Michigan lake placed second only to Lake Tahoe in a 2012 USA Today reader poll of America’s best lakes. A boat tour of the lake will make it clear why: The 18-mile-long, multi-armed lake is clean and crystal-clear, with access to beaches, natural harbors and three of the North’s best small towns: East Jordan at the end of the lake’s south arm; Boyne City at the eastern edge of the north arm; and Charlevoix on the lake’s western edge. A shallow ledge, which outlines the entire lake, invites you to drop anchor and relax the day away. Find rentals at Northern Michigan Boat Rentals, which delivers to several boat launches on the lake. 231.437.3008, NMIBOATANDRVRENTAL.COM.

PADDLE THE JORDANFor those who love the serenity of a kayak or canoe, the scenic and wild Jordan River Valley is hal-lowed ground. The high bluffs that cradle the river reach nearly 500 feet in some places, and are par-ticularly gorgeous during fall color season. The current can range from smooth in places to swift in oth-ers, so true beginners may prefer a guided group trip with Jordan Valley Outfitters (311 N. Lake St., East Jordan, 231.536.0006, jvout-fitters.com). For more experienced paddlers, Jordan Valley Outfitters offers rentals, as does The Swiss Hideaway (1953 Graves Crossing, Mancelona, 231.536.2341, jordan-riverfun.com).

ELK RAPIDS Veterans Memorial Park, on the eastern shore of East Grand Traverse Bay, is Elk Rapids’ in-town oasis. The waters are shallow and warm, the beach is pristine, and kids love splashing around at the spot where the mouth of Elk River empties into the bay. Other amenities include basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, a play area, grills, and trees for finding respite from the sun. On River Street in downtown Elk Rapids. 231.264.8202, elkrapidschamber.org.
Barnes Park: A gem just beyond Torch Lake’s northern tip, dishing up a huge, sandy beach on Grand Traverse Bay. This is a fabulous spot to spend an entire beach day, or come in the evening just to catch the sunset. Amenities include camping, a play area, and a network of hiking and biking trails. 12298 BARNES PARK RD.,
EASTPORT, 231.599.2712.
Charlevoix: Lake Michigan Beach in Charlevoix is a popular white-sand sanctuary with all the amenities: lifeguards, conces-sion stands, restrooms, picnic areas. It’s also the place to catch a gorgeous sunset, and is home to great rock hunting—especially for Petoskey stones. For calmer, warmer waters, take the family down to Depot Beach on Lake Charlevoix, located next to the town’s charming old train depot (now a historical museum).231.547.2101, CHARLEVOIX.ORG.
East Jordan: Elm Pointe, formerly a pioneer homestead, is one of East Jordan’s loveliest parks. Monroe Creek winds its way through the 11 acres of parkland, which includes beach frontage and a picnic area on the south arm of Lake Charlevoix. 1787 N. M66,
EAST JORDAN, 231.536.3381, EASTJORDANCITY.ORG.
Torch Lake Township: Despite being Michigan’s second-largest inland lake—and one of the state’s loveliest at that—Torch doesn’t offer many public access sites. But if you’re looking to dip your toes into these gorgeous waters, the pretty little beach at William K. Good Day Park in Torch Lake Township is the place to be, with pavilions, picnic tables, restrooms, a pier and swimming area. Find it at the eastern end of Public Dock Road, on US31 just a few miles south of M88. Call Torch Lake Township Clerk for info. 231.599.2036.
Alden: Sidled up to the Torch Lake waterfront, adjacent to the pier in downtown Alden, you’ll find what’s really just the barest sliver of beach. But it’s got all you need: A sandy-bottomed swimming area, and just enough shoreline to park a picnic blanket. Because this spot faces due west, it’s the perfect place for a sunset dip. Find it at the sharp dogleg on South East Torch Lake Drive (County Highway 593). VISITALDEN.COM.
