ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Since its founding in 1854, The Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black University, has had an internationally recognized commitment to excellence in scholarship and service.

The Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts. In addition to our more visible graduates – Supreme Court Justice Thurgood

Marshall ’30, poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29, the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30, and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkru-mah ‘39 - The Lincoln University and its graduates have achieved the follow-ing additional distinctions: participated in the founding of eight universities

in the United States and abroad, created the organization (Crossroads Afri-ca) which served as the model for the U.S. Peace Corps, and published the first Alumni Magazine of any College or University (1884). Lincoln graduates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the first African American female rear admi-

ral in the U.S. Navy, Lillian Fishburne ’71. The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its found-er, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey, his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson,

and the first two students - James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. The Lincoln University was initially chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from the surrounding community and region, and around the world. The University admitted women students in 1952, and formally asso-

ciated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. A total of 15,500 students have graduated from Lincoln since its founding in 1854. The Lincoln University has had 12 presidents that have made distinctive and

significant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. They include Dickey (1853-78); John Pym Carter (1856-61); John Wynne Martin (1861-65); Isaac Norton Rendall (1856-1906); John Ballard Rendall (1906-24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1924-26;

1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57); Marvin Wachman (1962-69); Her-man Russell Branson (1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98) and Ivory V. Nelson (1999-present).

Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, The Lin-coln University offers forty (40) academic majors, six (6) pre-professional programs, and five (5) graduate programs to 2,450 students from 24 states and 35 foreign countries.

The University has five programs of excellence in Sciences (Chemistry, Phys-ics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science), Teacher Education, Business and Technology (Accounting and Finance), Mass Communications and the Lincoln-Barnes Center of Excellence in Visual

Arts. Currently, The Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, com-

puter and information sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its undergraduate degrees awarded are in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. In addition, The Lincoln Uni-versity has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates (1989 to

2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. Under Ivory Nelson’s presidency, the Board of Trustees approved changes that redefined the core curriculum and curriculum structure to keep pace with the ever changing face of higher education and prepare Lincoln’s stu-

dents for success in graduate and professional studies and high potential career aspirations.

The Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lincoln also operates two satellite campuses one in Coatesville Pennsylvania, the other in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 2000, the University began massive programmatic and physical plant upgrades. In the eight years that followed, The Lincoln University secured $275 million to enhance the physical facilities and redesign the campus’ infrastructure.

These funds allowed the University to construct a new High-Tech Science and General Classroom Building as well as a state-of-the-art International Cultural Center.

In addition to new construction, several major renovation projects of the University’s existing buildings were undertaken, including Ware Center, University Hall, Grim Hall, Wright Hall, the Langston Hughes Memorial Li-brary, the Student Union Building and the University’s Center for Graduate

and Continuing Education in Philadelphia. It was also during this time that Lincoln achieved its first ever investment grade rating (A-3 rating from Moody’s Investor’s Service) that resulted in the

sale of $40 million in bonds to construct a new 409-bed, air-conditioned residence hall to house its students. In April of 2006, The Lincoln University continued its commitment to en-hance the quality education and campus life experience for its student body,

with the reinstatement of a football program and marching band to com-mence in fall 2008. The proposed move from Division III to Division II in 2006 also required the addition of a women’s softball team to the athletic offerings.

In recent years, Lincoln has provided its male and female students the op-portunity to participate in collegiate competition in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, cross country and volleyball. The Lincoln University

track & field athletes have compiled an outstanding record of achievement in NCAA competition, capturing a total of 15 men’s and women’s national championships. In celebrating The Lincoln University’s historic past and promising future,

we recognize and honor Lincoln’s three historic purposes: 1. To teach honestly, and without fear of censure, what humankind has painfully and persistently learned about the environment and its people. 2. To preserve this knowledge for the future.

3. To add to this store of knowledge. The Lincoln University remains committed to preserving its distinction as an intellectual and cultural resource.

RAMON FLANIGAN Head Coach

Southern Methodist ‘97 Second Year

Career Record: 1-9 Record at Lincoln: 1-9

Ramon Flanigan enters his second season as the head coach at The Lincoln University. In his inaugural season in 2013, Flanigan guided the Lions to a season-opening victory downing rival Cheyney University, 33-28. Several of his student-athletes received post season honors. Freshmen Steven Gilliam and Wadel Louis both earned All-CIAA Rookie Team honors while Kyle Jaski and Akeem Jordan received All-CIAA First Team honors. Jordan broke several single-season records with his 2013 performance; receiving yards (913), total points scored (72), receiving touch-downs (12), and total touchdowns scored (12). Jaski led the CIAA in total punt yards (2,476) and average yards per punt (44.2). He was one of 21 players from a CIAA institution to be named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Super Region One Squad in 2013. Prior to Lincoln, Flanigan had a highly decorat-ed coaching career in NCAA Division I with Mississippi Valley State and the University of North Texas as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He assisted with academic and other administrative duties, worked three years for the Mississippi Valley State football program under head coach Karl Morgan. Before his stint at Mississippi Valley State, Flanigan spent the 2008 season as the wide receivers coach at Prestonwood Christian Academy and was the quarterbacks coach at Galveston Ball High School in 2009. Before coaching at the high school level, Flani-gan spent eight seasons as an assistant coach

at the University of North Texas – five as the program’s offensive coordinator. In his first season of directing the offense, Flanigan helped the Mean Green amass 3,699 total yards, which was at that time the highest total since 1994. In his second year, he improved the offense to 4,257 total yards of offense and a scoring average of 27.5 points per game, which was also the best for North Texas since 1994. During the 2004 campaign, Flanigan’s offense posted more than 4,000 total yards of offense for the second time in school history. While serving as offensive coordinator under then head coach Darrell Dickey, North Texas won four consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships and made four postseason bowl appearances. In six years as the quarterbacks coach at North Texas, Flanigan was responsible for the devel-opment of several young quarterbacks and was faced with a similar challenge in 2005. Scott Hall became a starter as a true freshman in 2001 and under Flanigan’s direction, improved to lead the Mean Green to its first bowl game in 42 years the following season. Hall finished his career in 2004 as the school’s all-time lead-er in career passing efficiency and ranked in the top four in passes completed, passing yards and touchdowns. When Hall was injured in 2002, Flanigan’s abil-ity was tested when he was faced with the task of guiding red-shirt freshman Andrew Smith through a grueling 12-game schedule and the successful defense of a Sun Belt championship and a New Orleans Bowl victory. Tragically, Smith was killed in an automobile accident prior to the 2004 season, requiring Flanigan to teach the toughest lesson to his young pupils - the lesson of life. Flanigan was just one of 10 coaches selected to partici-pate in the NCAA’s inaugural Expert Coaching Program in June 2004. The program was cre-ated for ethnic minority football coaches with at least six years

experience to help in the development of mi-nority coaches. He was chosen again in 2005. He also participated in the NFL Minority Intern-ship Program, spending time with the Green Bay Packers. Flanigan, a 1997 graduate of Southern Meth-odist University, led the Mustangs to a 6-5 record, the school’s first winning season since 1986. He concluded his SMU career as the school’s career leader in total offense with 7,437 yards and as the school’s fourth all-time leading passer with 5,640 yards. He is the only player in SMU history to pass for 5,500 or more yards and rush for at least 1,500 yards. He had 30 career passing touchdowns and 27 career-rushing touchdowns for a school record 57 touchdowns produced.

He made his collegiate debut as a true fresh-

man in 1992, but received a red-shirt after

partially tearing a thumb ligament against

North Texas and missed the final nine games of

the season. In 1994, Flanigan was one of 11

players in the country selected to the College

Football Association All-American Team. He

was a second-team All-Southwestern Athletic

Conference pick that season after finishing

13th in the nation in total offense (237.1 yards

per game). In 1996 he was named Western

Athletic Conference Mountain Division “Player

of the Week” after a 23-10 win over Arkansas.

When he has finished his playing career, he

proceeded to complete his academic tenure at

SMU with a bachelor’s degree in Economics

with Financial Applications.

While at Grambling, Pickens was a two-time SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) newcomer of the week and he was a second team honorable-mention selection. The honors continued to arrive for Pickens at Lane College where he was a second-team all conference selection in 2002.

CHRISTOPHER PATTERSON Assistant Football Coach

Norfolk State ‘96 Second Year

Coach Patterson enters his second season with The Lincoln Uni-versity as an Assistant Coach for the Offensive Line.

Prior to Lincoln, Patterson spent two years mentoring varisty football players at Syracuse City Schools. During the 2010 sea-son, Patterson worked at Lane College as the Defensive Line coach/Recruiting Coordinator.

His career started at Norfolk State University as a student-assistant and has extended as far as Germany where he coached in the Northern Germany American Football League. In 2005, Patterson coached First Team All-American Tight End, Jonathan Allen at Norfolk State University. As a player, Patterson started his collegiate career at Morehouse College and ended at Norfolk State University in Virginia. Offensively, the Lions return starters at all key positions led by senior signal-caller Doug Cook. Cook holds all passing records at The Lincoln University heading into his final year under center with career total of 6,620 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, and 236.4 average yards per game. Five of Cook’s top six targets return led by senior All-CIAA First Team Wide Receiver Akeem Jordan and senior Anthony Green. Jordan broke several single-season records with his 2013 perfor-mance; receiving yards (913), total points scored (72), receiving touchdowns (12), and total touchdowns scored (12). Green caught 24 passes a season ago for 355 total yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Steven Gilliam received All-CIAA Rookie Team honors in 2013 after a solid job in the Li-ons backfield. He broke the Lions’ longest rush from scrimmage record with a 72-yard dash in his collegiate-debut. Despite the loss of four of five starters on the offensive line, Lincoln is an-chored by a veteran starter at Center in senior Daniel Mammah who started in 9-out-of-10 games last season. The top two tacklers return from 2013 in defensive back Brion Robinson and linebacker Gavin Lampkin. Robinson led the squad with 86 tackles and in pass breakups with six. In a battle with the Golden Bulls, he exploded for 17 total tackles and was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week. Lampkin had a team-high sev-en tackles for a loss of yardage, five sacks, an interception while making 75 stops will lead the Lions defense along with Robin-son. Sophomore linebacker Wadel Louis was named to the All-CIAA Rookie Team after totaling 48 tackles including back-to-back weeks with ten tackles recorded against the Blue Bears and Panthers.

The Lions open their 2014 schedule at home with back-to-back home games in the LU Football Stadium. Lincoln will kick off the season with their first ever televised football game on Thursday, September 4 against Cheyney in the annual "Battle of the First". SPORTSfever Television Network will cover this historical event live from the campus of The Lincoln University at 7p.m. After the rivalry clash, the Lions will host North Carolina Wesleyan on Sep-tember 13 in recognition of "Military Appreciation Day". The final nonconference contest on the Lions 2014 schedule will be their first road game featuring the Red Hawks of Montclair State from the Skyline Conference. This will also be the first meeting between the Lions and Red Hawks. Last season, Montclair State finished with a 4-6 overall record. In his first season at the helm of the Lions foot-

ball team, Head Coach Ramon Flanigan and his

2013 Lions got off to a huge start downing rival

Cheyney University in the season opener on

the road, 33-28.

A huge contributor to the success throughout

the season was All-CIAA First Team member

wide receiver Akeem Jordan. Jordan broke

several single-season records with his 2013

performance; receiving yards (913), total

points scored (72), receiving touchdowns (12),

and total touchdowns scored (12).

Punter/Kicker Kyle Jaski was also named to the

2013 All-CIIA Football First Team after leading

the CIAA in total punt yards (2,476) and aver-

age yards per punt (44.2). Jaski was one of 21

players from a CIAA institution to be named to

the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Super

Region One Squad.

Freshman running back Steven Gilliam and

linebacker Wadel Louis received All-CIAA Rook-

ie Team honors for their efforts throughout the

season. Gilliam ran for a season-best 72-yard

rush against Sacred Heart in his first collegiate

game. Louis posted ten tackles in back-to-back

Lincoln 33, Cheyney 28 Game 1 September 7, 2013 O’Shields Stevenson (Attn: 3,061) Cheyney, PA - Lincoln struck twice in the first two minutes of play, then held off a second half charge by the Wolves to win the annual "Battle of the Firsts" by a score of 33-28, snapping a two-year skid against the rival Cheyney Wolves.

One of those big plays came early, with a mere two minutes off the clock. The Lions defense had just held strong, forcing a three-and-out. Cheyney punter came on and booted one across mid-field to just about the Lincoln 30-yard line. No Lion attempted to field it, and the ball rolled to a stop. But Cheyney never downed the ball, and began to leave the field before a whistle blew. An alert Elijah Douglas scooped it up, and ran it back 71 yards for the touchdown. And just like that, the Lions were up 7-0. Douglas had a big day for Lincoln. In addition to starting the scoring, his third period interception set up a Kyle Jaski field that put the Lions up 33-14.

Quarterback Doug Cook, finished the afternoon with 208 yards on 14 of 21 passing, and three touchdowns. With 9:13 to play in the first, Cook finally got under center for Lincoln's first play from scrimmage. Cook dropped back to pass, and found a wide open Akeem Jordan down the right sideline, and Jordan took it to the house.

Lincoln held a slight lead over Cheyney, but a final attempt at an onside kick skipped out of bounds, and Lincoln was able to run out the clock for the first win for new head coach Ramon Flani-gan, 33-28.
