festive concert by the American Boychoir has long been a holiday tradition in Princeton, but unlikeprevious years when audiences had two opportunities to see the group perform in the area, scheduling difficulties has forced the group to hold just one concert this December.

The American Boychoir continues a Princeton

tradition

The American Boychoir will share the holiday spirit with its annual “Home for the Holidays” concert, Dec. 14.

On Dec. 14, from 4-6 p.m., the beautiful voices of the American Boychoir will perform a “Home for the Holidays” show at the Richardson Auditorium at Alexander Hall on the Princeton University campus.

Under the leadership of music director Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, the concert choir consists of 27 boys in fourth through eight grade from all over the country who come to study in Princeton at the American Boychoir School.

“We just finished our fall tour so now all our attention is on the holiday repertoire,” Mr. Malvern-Ruiz says. “We had a wrinkle that we can only have one concert this year so if anyone in the Princeton area wants to hear us, they only have one opportunity.”

The Boychoir performs regularly with world-class orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and is often featured with such illustrious conductors as James Levine, Charles Dutoit, and Alan Gilbert.

“The Christmas concert is always a family-oriented concert where we sing great holiday classics but also do some music from all over the world,” Mr. Malvern-Ruiz says. “We do old-time classics like ‘Silent Night,’ ‘Joy to the World,’ and some interesting African holiday music. This year we have some songs from Venezuela and do some Spanish Christmas music.”

Selections are chosen by Mr. Malvern-Ruiz, who tries to work on a general theme, and picks a program that appeals to both the choir members and the audience alike.

“The hard thing about choosing a program is deciding what not to put,” he says. “My first requirement is, What is there for the boys, what can they gain? Then I ask, What’s in it for the audience? The last requirement is something they can sing without getting tired. These are pieces that need to have value for the boys.”

For each program, he is sure to include classical, world music and new music

offerings.“Every program should be something

that people at concerts should be looking forward to hearing because they know it, but also something that they don’t know that could become a new favorite for them,” he says. “I try to appeal to a wide variety of people.”

At the end of the concert, all alumni are invited up on stage to take part in singing “Jessye’s Carol,” a song the choir has performed in concert for the past 26 years.

“It’s my favorite moment of the whole year,” Mr. Malvern-Ruiz says. “It’s always awe-inspiring and moving. We have 80 to 100 people up on stage, young men to old men singing together with the boys; it’s just a beautiful piece of music.”

The American Boychoir will perform its “Home for the Holidays” concert in Richardson Auditorium, Dec. 14, 4-6 p.m. Tickets cost $25-$40. For more information, go to americanboychoir.org or call 609-258-9220.
