Jerry Schafer Head Coach Phone: (605) 394-2603 [email protected]
Coach Schafer begins his 30th year at SD Mines with 27 at the helm of the Hardrocker cross country and track & field programs after serving eight years as an assistant coach at the high school and collegiate levels. An Adams State College (CO) graduate, coach Schafer brings the knowledge, experience and tradition for excellence from that nationally known program to the SDSM&T campus.
During the past 20 years, the Hardrocker cross country teams have distinguished themselves by winning several men's and women's team titles at the conference and district level. The "Runnin' Rockers" have accounted for 41 all-conference honors and eight individual titles while qualifying 30 runners for the national championship.
On the track, and in the field, SDSM&T has been equally successful with 72 national competitors, 21 national placers, and 17 All-American honors since 1986. Hardrocker xc and track & field athletes have been named Scholar-Athlete no less than 40 times.
"Athletics and academics at SDSM&T epitomizes what college athletics was meant to be," Schafer said. "We combine the best of both worlds to better prepare student-athletes for the future."
The belief that hard work and dedication can overcome any challenge is what motivates the athletes on the Hardrocker cross country and track & field teams to strive for excellence in everything they do, and the Black Hills and SDSM&T provide the perfect environment for student-athletes to develop to their fullest potential.
Steve Johnson Assistant Coach Phone: (605) 394-2686 [email protected]
Distance, Jumps, Javelin
Johnson is in his fifth year at SD Mines and primarily works with the middle distance runners, jumpers and javelin throwers. Since coming to Mines, Johnson has coached athletes to 40 school records. Johnson has also coached national qualifiers in the 4x800-meter relay, high jump and long jump including Mines second female All-American -- high jumper Madisen Lane.
Johnson also started the SD Mines Track and Field Clinic. Held every spring, this event is an opportunity for groups of SD Mines track and field athletes to go out and work with local track and field teams in a one-afternoon clinic setting. The clinics are held free of charge.
As the recruiting coordinator for SD Mines, Johnson has played a key role in efforts to increase the women’s roster size and improve the depth of both the men’s and women’s teams.
Prior to coming to Mines, Johnson was an assistant coach at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. While at Mary he worked with national qualifiers in the javelin and the multi-events. Johnson also worked at the University of Puget Sound and coached two Northwest Conference triple jump champions and coached Brian Kramer to a national qualifying mark in the triple jump.
He's also had stints in Lakewood, Wash., at Pierce College; in University Place, Wash., at Speed Tech; and in Pullman, Wash., at the Comets Track Club.
Johnson lives in Rapid City with his wife, Simonne, and two boys, Josh and Zach.
Jim Stephens - Throws
Jim is in his second year as throws coach for the Hardrockers. In his college days, Jim competed at UCLA under world renown throws coach Art Venegas. After many years in the business world, Jim decided to join the track and field coaching ranks. Jim spent two seasons at Black Hills State where he produced 24 national qualifiers (indoor and outdoor). His athletes reached the finals at the National Championships 10 times and earned All-American honors five times.
"I look forward to raising the level of competitiveness in the throws program (at SD Mines) to the NCAA Div. II level," Stephens said.
Kent Jacobs - Sprints
Kent returns to the Hardrocker track & field program where he had a successful collegiate career. Kent is a former 400-meter school record holder (:48.89) which still ranks as third best all-time for the Hardrockers. He still holds the 4x100-meter relay record (42.33) with teammates Dain Patterson, Justin Wipf, and Matt Zolnowsky. Kent has assisted with the sprinters since his return to Rapid City in 2008, after many years working as a Mechanical Engineer in Cedar Rapids, IA. He is currently employed by Strider Bicycles of Rapid City.
Jake Hamik - Hurdles
Jake Hamik joins the Hardrocker Track and Field staff as a
volunteer assistant coach working with the hurdle events.
Jake spent two years as a graduate assistant for Northern
State, where he coached one NCAA All-American and two
NSIC Conference Champions.
Hamik had a stellar athletic career at Northern State
University which included four NCAA Div. II All-American
awards, two NCAA Academic All-American awards, 15
NSIC conference championships, five NSIC Track Athlete of
the Year awards and the South Dakota collegiate record in the
400-meter hurdles (50.92).
Hamik is currently employed with Modern Woodmen of
America in Rapid City.
