Located in the Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg was settled by German immigrants in 1846. The city serves as the county seat for Gillespie County.

FredericksburgCity Council

Adopted by the citizens of Fredericksburg in 1991, the Home Rule Charter type of government is the legislative and governing body of the city, and con-sists of a mayor and four council members. They are elected from the city at-large.

The term for the mayor and council members is two years. No mayor

or council member may serve more than four con-secutive two-year terms in the same office.

The terms of the council members are staggered so that two members are elected to a regular term each year.

Fredericksburg’s City Hall building is located at 126 West Main Street. The phone number there is 997-7521.

County facilitiesCounty services are

provided through the Gillespie County Court-house in the heart of downtown Fredericks-

Situated on “Courthouse Square,” the courthouse is joined there by Pioneer Memorial Library, the Gillespie County Law

Enforcement Building which houses the Gil-lespie County Jail and the Gillespie County An-nex 1 building (located in the former U.S. Post Of-

Appraisal districtLocated in the basement of the Gillespie

County Courthouse, the Gillespie Central Appraisal District is charged with deter-mining values on every piece of real estate in the county. paying each year.

Each May, new and long-time property owners alike will receive in the mail the ap-praised values of their properties. They then have 30 days in which to file a formal pro-test if they disagree with the numbers.

The appraisal district office welcomes tax-payers to visit them at the courthouse for discussions about any property values they may find questionable.

Oftentimes, having a quick visit there of-fers both the appraisers and the property own-ers some insight into the situation. Be-cause of that open line of communication, resolutions often occur at that point.

More information is available at 997-9807 or online at www.gillespiecad.org.

Fredericksburg is served by two funeral homes that offer a complete line of ser-vices.
