Appalachian Soccer Stadium

In 2014, Appalachian soccer begins its seventh season of play at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to the Appalachian Soccer Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school and HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

Appalachian State University women’s soccer is coming off of a 8-7-4 overall record in 2013, including a 4-2-4 mark in its final year in the Southern Conference. Appalachian fell to Samford in the opening round of the confernece tournament 1-0.

Head coach Sarah Strickland enters her fifth season at the helm of the Mountaineers and looks to take her team to the next level in its first year in the Sun Belt. She also brings back fourth-year assistant coach Lindsey Morgan and 10th-year assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers, Lindsay Cobb.

Appalachian was projected to finish fifth in the league in the annual Sun Belt preseason coaches poll.

The 2014 Mountaineers will carry 10 seniors this fall. The senior class is highlighted by 2013 SoCon second-team all-league selection Julia Holz. The Marietta, Ga. native scored seven goals and tallied six assists last season to finished tied with teammate Sam Childress with 20 points.

Eight juniors will make their return to the pitch for Strickland’s squad, which is highlighted by starting goalkeeper Megan Roberson and Childress, who earned second team all-league honors a year ago. Roberson played nearly 1,500 minutes in net and finished with a 1.29 goals against average and made 62 saves, while winning six games.

Childress led the Mountaineers in scoring with 10 goals, which included back-to-back game winners on the road against both Georgia Southern and Davidson. The goal against Davidson came in overtime.

While Appalachian’s sophomore class is small in numbers with just four players, it contains some of the team’s top playmakers.. Included in the group are both SoCon all-freshman team selections, Jane Cline and Jackie Nieradka. Cline finished with four goals and five assists in her freshman campaign, while Nieradka played excellent back line defense and contributed two assists.

Strickland and the Mountaineers welcome not only 11 freshman to Boone this season, but also six teams who will compete against App State for the first time in program history. Of the seven home dates at Appalachian Soccer Stadium – matches against Liberty, George Mason and Sun Belt members, Troy, South Alabama, UL Lafayette and UL Monroe will be first-time meetings.

Sarah Strickland enters her fifth season at the helm of the women’s soccer program at Appalachian State University in its transition into the Sun Belt Conference. To date, she has amassed over fifteen years of coaching experience at the club, collegiate and national levels.

The 2013 campaign saw the Mountaineers garner eight wins and finished 8-7-4 and a 4-2-4 mark in the Southern Conference, which was good for a tie for fifth, earning a spot in the conference tournament. Strickland coached both Sam Childress and Julia Holz to second-team all-conference honors and two freshman, Jane Cline and Jackie Nieradka, to the all-freshman team.

Childress finished the season tied for second all-time in program history with 10 goals in a single-season, while Holz now ranks fifth all-time with 48 career points.

In 2012, Strickland led the Mountaineers to a 10-8-1 overall mark, which was the best overall record since the 2007 season, earning a spot in the SoCon tournament. The team finished fourth in the league with a 7-3-1 conference record, which marked the best SoCon finish in women’s soccer history dating back to 1994. Julia Holz earned SoCon first team honors and was the first Mountaineer to earn that honor since Dawn-Marie Alfred in 2003.

Strickland spent her first two seasons building the foundation for program success and earned a result in 18 of 32 games, including 11 wins.

Before coming to App State, Strickland was an assistant coach at Mississippi State, where she served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and goalkeepers’ coach for two seasons. She was instrumental in MSU’s turnaround from four-consecutive losing seasons to a 9-8-2 record in 2009, the program’s first winning season in six years.

During the successful ‘09 campaign, the Bulldogs set program records for consecutive wins (eight) and shutouts (four) and achieved the highest RPI ranking in school history (No. 41). Under Strickland’s tutelage, goalkeeper Taryn Holland ranked second in the Southeastern Conference history with 368 career saves and set MSU records for saves and shutouts.

Prior to her stint in the SEC, Strickland was a well-respected club soccer coach and administrator in Alabama for eight years. During that time, she served as the director of coaching for the Montgomery YMCA Capital City Streaks (2000-04), Girls’ Director for Coaching for the American Soccer Club (2004-06) and Staff Director for the Birmingham United Soccer Association (2006-07).

She began her coaching career on the collegiate level as an assistant coach at Troy University in 1998 and served as the program’s interim head coach during the 1999 offseason. From there, she moved on to Auburn University at Montgomery, where she was an assistant on the men’s and women’s staffs from 1999-2000.

On the national level, Strickland is a United States Soccer Federation “B” licensed coach and served on the staff of the U-14 national program in 2001. She also coached for the Alabama Olympics Development Program boys’ and girls’ programs from 1998-2002 and the Mississippi ODP girls’ in 2009.

The former Sarah Churchill was a three-year letterwinner at George Mason, where she helped lead the Patriots to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996 and 1997, making it as far as the Sweet 16 in ‘97.

Strickland was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Award winner and graduated from GMU with a B.A. in psychology in 1998. She earned a M.S. in foundations of education from Troy in 1999.

Coach Strickland and her husband, Jimmy (an athletic trainer for field hockey and wrestling at Appalachian) have three children: Kelsey, Bo and Will.

Morgan assisted a young roster in 2011 that carried 16 freshmen and just two seniors and tallied four shutouts, netted 16 goals and average over 10 shots per match.

Prior to serving at SFA, Morgan spent the 2009 season coaching her alma mater, Columbus State University, where she earned four letters. As an assistant, Morgan coached the Cougars to a 16-3-3 overall mark and 8-1-1 conference record.

Cobb was a three-time first-team All-ACC goalkeeper for NC State from 1988-90.

During her four-year career with the Wolfpack, Cobb was named ACC Tournament MVP for the conference champions. She led the Wolfpack to a 65-21-7 career record (.737) and a pair of NCAA semifinal appearances. She was named to the 1989 NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team after recording 15 saves in the semifinals against North Carolina. RICK

BEASLEYINTERIM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSNINTH YEAR AT APP STATE Rick Beasley, one of the most decorated student-athletes in Ap-palachian State University history, was named interim director of athletics by Appalachian State Chancellor Dr. Sheri N. Everts on Aug. 15, 2014. Beasley has been a member of the athletics administation at his alma mater since 2006. He came to Appalachian State as a senior associate athletics director and was promoted to deputy athletics director in 2014. In his role, Beasley served as the athletics depart-ment’s chief development officer and was heavily involved in the department’s day-to-day operations. Appalachian State athletics has enjoyed unprecedented fun-draising success under Beasley’s leadership. After never topping $700,000 in any full year prior to his arrival, the Yosef Club (Ap-palachian State athletics’ fundraising arm) has raised at least $1 million in each of Beasley’s eight full years at the University and has surpassed the $3 million mark each of the past two years. Additionally, Beasley has overseen the solicitation of donations for naming rights and premium seating that has funded much of Appalachian State’s $50 million in athletics facility enhancements since his arrival. An all-America wide receiver at Appalachian State from 1977-80, Beasley set seven school records during his playing career and remains the program’s all-time leader in yards per reception (17.6) and 100-yard games (16) in a career. In addition to being named a second-team Associated Press All-American in 1979, he was also the Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year in 1979-80, a three-time all-conference performer and an academic all-conference honoree. For 17 years prior to his return to Appalachian State (1989-2006), Beasley served as the city manager for Conover, N.C. As city man-ager, he served at the pleasure of the city council and was respon-

sible for the administration of all city departments. Beasley was also the town manager of Scotland Neck, N.C. (1985-89) and an assistant city manager in Lenoir, N.C. (1982-85). Beasley earned both a B.A. in political science with a minor in economics and a M.A. with a concentration in local government from Appalachian. His wife, Diana, is director of teacher education recruitment for the Appalachian State office of admissions. She earned a M.A. in higher education administration and university and community leadership from Appalachian. The Beasleys live in Boone.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now at-tracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is one of the 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Ap-palachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to com-munities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused sustainable technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universi-ties in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recre-ational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian State University, 10 for men and 10 for women. Appalachian was a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014 – one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Nearly half of Appalachian’s student-athletes typically earned inclusion on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 grade-point average or higher while completing at least 24 hours in two semesters.SoCon success Before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014, the Mountaineers won 34 Southern Conference Commissioner’s cups for overall excellence in men’s athlet-ics, with 2013-14 being its ninth-straight year to win. No other school claimed the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since it was first awarded in 1970. While in the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer, softball and men’s tennis. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institu-tional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its

athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifica-tions, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its ef-fects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthu-siasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orches-tra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.

Dr. Sheri N. Everts joined Appalachian State University as its seventh leader in July 2014. Previously, she had been provost and vice president for academic affairs at Illinois State University since 2008.

A Nebraska native who attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse, Everts graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in English instruction and second-ary education. After teaching middle school and high school English in Kansas and Nebraska, she returned to UNL, where she earned a master’s degree in

literacy education and English (1991) and a doctorate in administration, curriculum and instruction (1994). Everts began her higher education career in 1994 as an assistant profes-sor in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Rising through the academic and administrative ranks at UNO, she was named assistant vice chancellor for academic and student affairs in 2000, promoted to associate vice president in 2003, and named interim senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs in 2006. She served in that interim capacity until June 30, 2008, when she left Nebraska to become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Illinois State University.
