VISIONEvery child in Washington state is ready to succeed in school and life.
MISSIONBuilding community-wide commitment to deliver a comprehensive, high-quality early learning environment that benefits every child and family in Washington.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Stronger Together.
This was the theme of our successful 2014 Leadership Luncheon, and it is the belief that guided our entire year.
On January 1, 2014, Thrive Washington (then Thrive by Five Washington) and the Foundation for Early Learning officially merged, bringing together the best of two statewide early learning organizations to serve more families, more partners, more communities—and, ultimately, ensure more children get a great start in life.
Together, we are a stronger leader. Together, we are better able to take full advantage of the innovation and momentum around early learning in Washington state and throughout the country. Together, we can do so much more to support and serve Washington state’s youngest children and their families.
And we’ve only just begun to deliver on our potential. We are guided by our values of reaching families as early as possible with the highest quality programs and information, eliminating the opportunity gap, and ensuring community-wide commitment to early learning. We are changing the way providers, funders and communities work together to build a strong environment for early learning.
To keep moving forward, a new strategic framework is being developed, complete with metrics and indicators to help us track our progress. We look forward to sharing our plans for the future—and our progress—with you.
The first years of life have the power to shape a lifetime. Thank you for your partnership in helping us ensure that those years are as powerful as possible. We are all stronger together.
Thank you.

Granted $850,000 to our state’s 10 Early Learning Regional Coalitions to support capacity-building and programmatic work around family engagement, home visiting, racial equity and the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS), the state’s kindergarten readiness assessment.
Expanded the Home Visiting Services Account to serve an additional 200 families and welcomed three new counties – Grays Harbor, Okanagan and Adams. Thrive now supports 36 agencies that are providing evidence-based, research-based and promising practices home visiting programs for nearly 2,000 families in 21 counties across the state.
Delivered a successful summer tour of the UNI: Portable Early Learning Lab, traveling 2,574 miles to host 20 events in 10 counties and inspiring more than 1,500 young children.
2013-2014 HighlightsReached thousands of families in some of our state’s most vulnerable communities through our “Love. Talk. Play.” campaign, which celebrates and supports parents as their children’s first and most important teachers by providing fun and easy ideas for making the most of everyday activities.
Collaborated with the First Peoples, First Steps Alliance to conduct a statewide survey of Native American families about their priorities and concerns relative to early learning. With the goal of preserving Native culture, language and oral traditions, Thrive actively supports the Alliance in its efforts to prepare and retain Native teachers in early childhood education.
Awarded $175,000 to five grantees to create and expand science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) opportunities in early learning. This is the second of three cohorts supported through our Discoveries from the Field fund. Research indicates that early math skills are the best predictor of long-term academic success, but only half our state’s children are “math ready” when entering kindergarten.

Our Grantees: In Their Own Words
Many of the immigrants we serve face challenges due to language and culture, having no way to comprehend standard American curriculum with American cultural references. Funding from Thrive has helped to broaden the impact of early learning opportunities for Asian immigrant families and their children in King County. Culturally relevant programs, such as our STEM play-and-learn group, offers hands-on activities that engage children’s natural curiosity and increase parental support in their children’s learning.”
– Hueling Chang Chinese Information and Service Center
The technical assistance and support provided by the Thrive team have been an invaluable resource in helping us develop and implement our home visiting program. The tools and processes that Thrive provided us were very effective in helping us build our program and start providing direct services within a short period of time.”
– Leo Gaeta Columbia Basin Health Association
Thrive has introduced an innovative approach to relationships between grant funders and the organizations that receive funding. There is frequent conversation, genuine support for the organization to be successful, and an openness to new ideas and diverse approaches.”
– Lorraine Olsen Olympic Kitsap Peninsulas Early Learning Coalition
The 29 recognized tribes in Washington state want to provide quality services for their youngest children and families, but they also want to assure that the environment is reflective of the community the child belongs to. First Peoples, First Steps Alliance is a primary example of a collaborative effort that supports tribal programs on reservations and in urban areas. Thrive realized the importance of nurturing this alliance in its formation and finding a means to strengthen its initial project—to support Native teachers in the classrooms.”

INVESTING AND WORKING STATEWIDEFrom July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, Thrive awarded nearly $10.8 million in grants statewide. Because of Thrive, there is increased public and private investment in efforts to eliminate the opportunity gap for children of color, increase home visiting services in the most vulnerable communities, support community-driven work across the state, and strengthen and advance Washington’s early learning system so that all children are ready for school.

SUPPORTER PROFILE:
JANET LEVINGERA good start changes everything for kids. It’s the difference between a future of opportunity and a future of failure. Kids who start kindergarten behind usually don’t catch up.
A strong start also changes everything for our community. Imagine investing our tax dollars in roads and schools instead of prisons. Because kids who start strong are less likely to
need remedial education, become teen parents, get involved with drugs, or end up in prison.
I like to focus on systems. Thrive is all about creating a statewide system that embraces quality and opportunity—for ALL young kids. This system includes players on the ground all around the state. We help connect them, train them, support them. And this system includes players in Olympia, where Thrive works to make sure our youngest children and their families are at the top of the agenda with policymakers.
For me, early learning is not just a good investment for kids, it is a smart investment for our community. That’s why I invest in and support Thrive.
Janet Levinger is a Thrive Washington board member.
