ECONOMICDEVELOPMENTUniversity of Missouri

Greetings from the MU Office of Economic Development!

The University of Missouri’s (MU) Economic Development mission is to be a recognized leader for its ease of engagement and ability to leverage its assets and resources. There have been a lot of changes at MU over the last couple of years. Planning is now guided by a strategic operating plan that steers the difficult decisions based on resource allocation and

redistribution. Improved processes in facilitating effective university-community interactions, bringing technology to market and supporting innovation are being established. New programs like the University of Missouri Faculty Entrepreneur Workshop Series are being developed. We are striving to strategically market and communicate the benefits of doing business with the University, both internally to entrepreneurial-focused faculty and students, and externally to business and industry. We’re beginning to collaborate across campuses, sharing best practices and celebrating successes. Inside you’ll find examples of the businesses we attract, the relationships we continue to foster and the impact MU is having on the economies of our city, nation and world. Our message is clear: MU is open for business! Take a look and, as always, feel free to contact our office with comments, questions or ideas.

Quality of Life

Did you know?

The MU School of Medicine is utilizing •models generated in the College of Engineering’s 3-D Printing Lab to prepare for surgeries. For example, Dr. Craig Kuhns uses 3-D models to help him plan where to place screws and rods when operating on irregularities, such as abnormal curvature of the spine.

Dr. Frank Booth and his MU research •team are using rats to study the correlation between a genetic pre-disposition toward exercise and increased mental development.

Sensors are being utilized by MU •researchers to monitor and sync the health information of patients between their homes and hospitals, allowing for better patient care and saving money.

Dr. Aaron Gray and Dr. Marjorie Skubic •created a diagnostic tool using motion-sensors and an Xbox Kinect to identify females at risk for ACL injury.

Promotes the breadth and depth of medical support, fine arts, and the economic impact of MU hosted events that are offered to Missouri residents.

An economic impact study of MU athletics in Columbia conducted through the College of Business found that MU athletic events had a total economic impact of just more than $247.1 million last year. Direct spending, which includes restaurant tabs, hotel stays and tickets sales was estimated to be about $142.1 million.
