Testing Timeline

2012-13– NC administers new assessments based on

Common Core and Essential Standards– New NC Online Tests for EOCs, EXTEND2,

Science 5 & 8• EOCs will be Algebra I, Biology, English II

– Types of items: technology enhanced, constructed response, and multiple choice

• Math – some gridded response items– Grades 5-8 and Math I

• Calculator Inactive: grades 3-8 and Math I– One-third to one-half of grades 3-8– One-third of Math I

SBAC Assessments

• Variety of question types– Selected response (multiple choice)– Short constructed response– Extended constructed response– Technology enhanced– Performance tasks

• Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)– Based on student responses, the computer program

adjusts the difficulty of questions throughout the assessment.

Performance Task Items

• Collections of questions and tasks will be connected to a single theme or scenario – EXAMPLE:– A student may be presented with reading material on a given

topic, and asked questions about the reading.

– That may be followed by reading on the same topic, but from a different perspective, with questions on that reading, plus some compare/contrast questions.

– Finally, the student may be provided additional readings on the same, or an associated topic, and asked to take a position or provide an argument in favor of or opposing a particular perspective, using the provided texts as reference
