Keeping Alaska
BeautifulALPAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to
eliminating litter & increasing economically viable recycling in Alaska. The generous support of our member
companies & other dedicated businesses throughout Alaska make ALPAR programs & services possible.
Alaska’s shipping companies support recycling by moving materials to markets
Alaska’s communities are cleaner when everyone works together – our sincere thanks tothe many volunteers who donate their time to help keep Alaska beautiful.
ALPAR PROGRAMSRecyclingALPAR promotes recycling awareness through public service advertising, web and Facebook, posters and coloring books and America Recycles Day programs. We also assist our recycling partners with community drop off opportunities and shipping recyclables to market through our backhaul program in the Railbelt thanks to the generosity of our shipping partners, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Horizon Lines, Alaska Marine Lines /Lynden, and the Alaska Railroad.
ALPAR Flying Cans and PET BottlesRural communities recycled over 50,000 pounds of aluminum cans and PET bottles last year thanks to Northern Air Cargo and the airlines serving rural Alaska.
Recycling Grant ProgramALPAR provides small grants for recycling and litter prevention projects throughout Alaska. Call ALPAR for more information.
Anchorage Can-Do KidsKids CAN DO a great job of recycling! They earn pocket money and prizes when they turn in aluminum cans at the Anchorage Recycling Center.
Adopt-A-PathwayALPAR joins city and state DOT “Adopt-a” programs to manage adoptions that keep paths along state maintained roadways in Anchorage litter free. Call ALPAR for information on guidelines and paths available.
ALPAR Youth Litter PatrolsALPAR’s longest-running program provides grants to communities to pay youth to pick up litter and recycle, too, throughout the summer.
Yellow Litter Bag DistributionEach year ALPAR distributes 300,000 free bright yellow litter bags to over 220 communities and groups that organize cleanup programs throughout the state. Thank you to our bag sponsor BP and to our bag distributor, Pepsi.
Glass, Christmas Tree and Nursery Pot RecyclingGlass can be dropped off at the Anchorage Recycling Center and the Anchorage Regional Landfill. Last year, Anchorage recycled over 1,200 tons! Christmas trees are recycled into wood chips during the holiday season at Anchorage and Palmer CARRS parking lots. ALPAR’s Nursery Pot recycling 1-day event on August 23 is in partnership with the Alaska Botanical Garden.
On this, ALPAR’s 31st year of serving Alaska, I want to give a special salute to Alaska’s maritime industry. Its long-standing support to ALPAR and our community recycling centers helps ensure that recycling remains economically viable. Horizon Lines, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Lynden Inc. / Alaska Marine Lines, and the Alaska Railroad donate over $2 million in backhaul services each year.
The backhaul of recyclables is also supported by Alaska’s trucking companies; Weaver Brothers,United Freight, Alaska West Express, Lynden Transport and Airland Transport. In 2013, over 26,000 tons of recyclables were shipped from the Port of Anchorage to Seattle/Tacomo. Thank you to all of these companies.
This spring, ALPAR with assistance from Pepsi, sent over 300,000 free bright yellow litterbags to 220 communities across Alaska to support litter cleanups. We couldn’t do it without BP, who has sponsored the program for 13 years. Thank you, BP. And, with help from ConocoPhillips, ALPAR’s Youth Litter Patrol grant program continues to provide jobs for youth in over 90 communities who clean up litter throughout the summer.
Finally, I want to recognize and thank our dedicated board members, businesses, community organizations, government agencies and volunteers who help us fulfill our mission to keep Alaska litter free and recycling. Together we are making a difference.

In Anchorage, only #1 plastic bottles and #2 plastic bottles/jugs are accepted – all must have a neck and screw top. Tubs, buckets and clear clamshell type containers contain different
chemicals which melt at different temperatures even though they may contain #1 or #2 resins. “Non-bottles” are much lower in value which makes them much less economical to recycle so we only take bottles and jugs in order to make our plastic recycling more sustainable. Plastic
bags and film are also taken at the Anchorage Recycling Center Drop-Off and bags are taken at most major retailers for recycling.
1252 Tons of Glass Recycled Last Year! Glass Recycling Drop Off at Anchorage Recycling
