MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Amendment 2 took 58.48 percent of the vote in Sarasota County, less than the 60 percent threshold. But on Election Day voters, a high enough percentage came to polls to pass pot.

U.S. HOUSE

Vern Buchanan won Sarasota County with 60.67 percent of the vote. At the same time, he lost to Henry Lawrence in the City of Sarasota, with Lawrence taking 54.11 percent of the vote in city precincts.

Paul Caragiulo won in all precincts except five where Democrats won every partisan race. One Alexandra Coe precinct was carried by Bridget Ziegler, but otherwise her voters appeared to be Dem voters.

As in other partisan contests, Alan Maio did well countywide, but Democrat Ray Porter did well in Sarasota

SARASOTA COUNTY COMMISSION

All precincts in Darryl Rouson’s district within Sarasota were carried by Dems across the board.

Ray Pilon performed especially well in the southernmost precincts within his district.

STATE HOUSE

VENICE CITY COUNCIL Republicans ran the boards in Sarasota County this year down to a battle for the nonpartisan Venice City Council. Venice proved a solid Republican ground.

Even in a General Election, turnout among the young vote was severely depressed, with voters in their 90s turning out in greater percentage than voters in their 20s.

Voter intensity and raw numbers were both on the Republicans’ side this election. The GOP turnout here exceeded 65 percent compared to Democrats’ 58 percent.

Discussion

Findings

- Democrats produced a higher turnout than most counties in the state but Republican turnout far outpaced that.

- Running with party ID is better than running with none, as NPAs only did well in absence of a Dem, and then only among Dem voters

- White voters were the only racial demographic to come out at greater than 50 percent turnout. Similarly, only voters over the age of 40 turned out at that rate.

- The vast bulk of turnout for Dems was in the City of Sarasota, where Dems won for Governor, Congress and County Commission. North Port was close, with Scott winning by 500 of 19,000 votes. Venice and Longboat Key trended Republican.

- Marsh did well in some Republican areas like LBK, but he trailed in much of South County, including North Port

- Both parties now have solid GOTV mechanisms, but sheer mass keeps the county firmly in GOP control
