Naperville, IL, resident and Girl Scout Ambassador Elyse Stompanato doesn’t mind doing her chores around the house. She’ll mow the lawn, clean and walk the dogs just to keep fit.

“Tasks like these help me get active, and they are so simple,” Elyse said.

On top of every-day chores, Elyse practices healthy living by dancing at least twice a week and eating balanced meals. During her 12 years as a Girl Scout, the 17-year old learned how to make healthy living fun and beneficial.

“I just always try to have fun working out; I never see it as something I have to do, but rather a chance to see all my friends that I dance with,” she said.

“I believe strongly that everyone, every girl in this case, should have easy access to information on health care and have the knowledge as to how to access it.”

Whether it is Zumba at camp, skiing or a day at the water park, our programs get girls active!

After participating in fitness overnights with Girl Scouts, Elyse realized that workouts didn’t have to be work. She recommends injecting fun into each and every healthy living activity.

“Make it an adventure,” Elyse advised. “Healthiness is an important compo-nent to life.”

She encourages girls to always be conscious of what they eat and to monitor their activity levels.

She took her passion for fitness and health, and turned it into a website for teen girls. Agirlshealth.com offers tips to teens so that they can include fitness into their crazy schedules and routines.

Four Lakes SkiingSki downhill at Four Lakes Ski Area in Lisle. Hit the slopes with all your Girl Scout friends. Lessons for beginners begin one hour after check-in. Cost includes equipment rental and slope ticket and beginner les-sons. Do not call Four Lakes for registration or information.

Key of LifeThe American Cancer Society’s FREE “Key of Life” program teaches girls about breast cancer prevention and gives them a chance to participate in a service project. Recognize your own power to decrease your odds of getting breast cancer. Patch included. Spanish materials available upon request. Materials mailed after registration.

Life-Long Fitness Lock-In OvernightParticipate in golf, aquatic exer-cise, track, table tennis, climbing wall, badminton, bags and tennis. A great evening for energetic girls who enjoy being active! Time forSavannah Shuffle 2.0Join us on a new and im-proved virtual walk to Savan-nah, Georgia! This is a great program for troops, service units and families. Girl Scout Brownies and up will track walking mileage along a route from where they live to the birth place of Juliette Gordon Low, earn patches and their Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards, learn to properly use a pedometer, discover the health benefits of walking and learn how to fuel their bodies with healthy snacks through 4-6 activity sessions. Groups will receive Girl Scouts water bottles and pedometer, daily step tracking logs and journals, group tracking poster, leader materials, and Savannah Shuffle patches.




Pulaski Day Journey and First Aid EventSign up for both the journey event and the First Aid badge event at the Joliet Gathering Place on Pulaski Day and spend a full day with other girls working toward earning your awards! Bring a sack lunch.

Your Best SelfCelebrate a healthy you and your best self with Chicago Children’s Museum. Get active, meet a health helper, and pick up some healthy habits! Connects to “My Best Self” badge, “Dancer” badge, “Purple Petal-Gloria” award.

MOVE-A-PALOOZA!Council-Wide Fun for Juniors and Older!

Join the move-ment for a healthy mind, body and spirit at our “Move-a-paloozas”! Earn at least one journey award while you meet new friends and have a great time with other Girl Scouts. YOU get to choose what you want to learn and experience by building your own schedule of activities. Ever tried yoga or Zumba? Want to learn some self-defense techniques or healthy cooking ideas? Maybe you’d like to work on your own personal statement or find your style. You decide!

Move-a-paloozas will include a film screening and discussion about important topics such as bullying or the representation of girls and women in the media, so you can make your thoughts and opinions heard loud and clear. You’ll also get a copy of a journey book to keep, and ideas for continuing your journey on your own or with your troop. Cost: $30 per girl.

Events are for Girl Scout Juniors and up and will be scheduled in a different location throughout our council’s geography on each of the following dates:

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Ages 6 -17 and adults

Let’s Move! Join the White House healthy living effort and earn PALA. Girls ages 6-17 can achieve the award by committing to be active for at least 60 minutes a day, at least five days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks; or by walking at least 11,000 steps a day during the same time period. Adults can achieve the award by committing to be active for at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks; or by walking at least 8,500 steps a day during the same time period.

Things you are already doing may count: dancing, playing field hockey, hiking, swimming, jumping rope — even cleaning your house and walking counts! Many of our council events, camp, badge and patch opportunities also include activities that will help you achieve the PALA together with your troop or on your own and put you on the path to healthy living.
