A. H. BECK FOUNDATION CO.It is rare that a company’s heritage, regardless of how impressive their accomplishments and traditions, includes the ultimate pioneering effort of starting an industry. Such is the case with A. H. Beck Foundation Company. When August Henry Beck Sr. saw the need and opportunity for drilled shaft foundations in 1932, he literally identified and tapped a new potential that has since become a highly regarded method of deep foundation construction.

In the decades that have followed, Beck Foundation Company has continued to remain at the forefront of the industry, and is regarded as one of the premier foundation drilling contractors in the southeast and entire United States.

CHARLES LOWMAN POWER PLANT Leroy, AlabamaI-4 / CROSSTOWN CONNECTOR • TAMPA, FLORIDAA. H. Beck Foundation Company installed drilled shafts to support the many bridges of the Interstate 4/Crosstown Expressway Connector (a limited-access, elevated toll road connecting the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway to Interstate 4 in Tampa, Florida). Construction of the drilled shafts required 5 drill rigs working around the clock to install 1,200 shafts with diameters ranging from 36 inches to 90 inches in diameter. With highly variable subsurface soils (predominantly sands and clays

overlying a Karst Limestone formation), the foundation depths ranged from 40 to 150 feet. This unpredictable subsurface created construction challenges. A. H. Beck used a method of sectional, temporary steel casings to stabilize the overburdened soils. This process allows additional temporary casings to be added, thus ensuring a stabile shaft.

CHARLES LOWMAN POWER PLANT Leroy, AlabamaVICTORIA TANK FARM • VICTORIA, TEXASAt the Port of Victoria Tank Farm Project, A. H. Beck’s scope included turn-key engineering and construction services for three 87’ diameter Crude Oil tanks, one 55’ diameter Slop Oil tank, and one 55’ diameter Fire Water tank. Beck’s design called for the installation of Soil Stabilization Columns (SSC’s) to minimize the settlement across the foundations of the tanks. The highly variable soils at the site presented unique challenges. For example, the soils varied from highly expansive

clays that had to be replaced, to fine clean sands requiring the use of a Bentonite Slurry technique. A. H. Beck’s knowledge and expertise was validated by its ability to engineer and develop a method to overcome extraordinary site conditions and meet the fast track project schedule. A. H. Beck’s performance was commended by the owner for providing a timely, turn-key product without sacrificing quality and job safety. CHARLES LOWMAN POWER PLANT Leroy, AlabamaCP CHEM SWEENY • OLD OCEAN, TXThis project consisted of 119 auger cast-in-place piles (ACIP) for a new pipe rack supporting large diameter pipe sections as well as multiple specific unit expansions. All work was performed and completed inside an operating plant facility utilizing a combination of restricted access, low head clearance and conventional hydraulic ACIP piling equipment. The soil conditions at the project site consisted of layered very dense sand and soft clays which required special installation procedures and quality control during production piling. The strict environmental restrictions as present at

the facility enforced that all spoils, grout and water be contained in roll-off boxes to prevent possible contaminated materials to be dispersed across the working area and to nearby drainage ditches. A total of 2 drilling rigs worked continuously at the site to meet the project schedule. A. H. Beck was given extra work beyond the original scope including drilled shafts and pump can foundations installed using low clearance drilling equipment.

PATTIKI MINE SHAFT • CARMI, ILLINOISA. H. Beck Foundation Company assisted North American Shaft Drillers on the White County Coal Corporation’s Pattiki II Mine Shaft, which is a new ventilation shaft for the Pattiki Mine. A. H. Beck installed steel casing, 11.5’ x 150’ in a shaft excavated entirely with 5000 bbls of bentonite slurry. All of the slurry was mixed and processed onsite. Two corrugated liners, 18’ x 10’ and 15’ x 30’, were also set and grouted. The primary shaft was drilled through sandy clays, sand, silts, sand and gravel, to reach shale bedrock. The bedrock

was penetrated 4’ to ensure the permanent casing was secure. The permanent casing was delivered in 30’ sections and assembled on site. The entire 150’ casing string weighed 167,000 pounds, and was set with a Grove 550 ton and a Liebher 250 ton crane. Once the casing was on bottom, it was grouted in stages all the way to the surface. After the grout cured, the bentonite slurry was pumped out of the shaft, and the dry excavation turned over to North American Shaft Drillers who completed the borehole to its final depth of 700’.

Whiting Refinery Modernization Project • Whiting, IndianaThe Whiting Refinery Modernization Project included the installation of 37 SynchroPiles™ underneath live, operational pipe racks in BP’s 12 Pipe Still Unit. These 35’ deep SynchroPiles™ were constructed with only 13 feet of head room. A test pile extending 8 feet above ground and 6 drilled shafts, including a shaft requiring concrete coring were also constructed. A. H. Beck maintained an exceptional safety record of zero incidents and performed in adherence to the contractor’s demanding schedule. A. H. Beck’s installation methods proved

to be successful in minimizing risks associated with constructing foundation elements in areas with high LEL counts. A. H. Beck’s SynchroPile™ installation within the live unit minimized the unit’s down time required to change out the existing pipe racks, saving the owner time and money. A. H. Beck’s exceptional performance in safety, budget, quality, and schedule is what made this project a big success for both the contractor and owner.GENERAL CONTRACTOR: FLUOR OWNER: BP Whiting, Indiana

AUSTIN WASTE WATER TUNNEL ACCESS SHAFTS •AUSTIN, TEXASA. H. Beck provided design/build services for construction of four vertical tunnel access shafts at 28-feet in diameter with depths up to 60-feet for the City of Austin’s new wastewater tunnel expansion project along the Colorado River. Secant pile compression ring shoring was installed along the peripheral of each shaft to ensure a watertight finished cell into the underlying bedrock. A. H. Beck utilized a hydraulic casing

oscillator manufactured by Leffer to advance and retrieve segmental double wall temporary steel casing through the water bearing soils. The high water table presence and soft unstable alluvial soils present at the work site dictated the use of full-length segmental temporary casing. High slump delayed set concrete was used to ensure concrete workability throughout the placement operations and successful full length casing retrieval.General Contractor: SAK/Quest, JVEngineer: Parsons

CHARLES LOWMAN POWER PLANT Leroy, AlabamaAEC POWER PLANT • LEROY, ALABAMAThe project was located on the banks of the Tombigbee River in Leroy, Alabama in the Charles R. Lowman Power Plant. The “Pinning System Project” consisted of one hundred 54-inch diameter cased drill shafts, averaging 112 feet in length. The drill shafts were installed to stop the slope failure occurring at the banks of the Tombigbee River. A. H. Beck (in conjunction with Jordan Pile Driving of Mobile, Alabama) designed and installed a system of trestle work bridges and long reach drilling equipment to construct the pinning shafts

in the required location. This was accomplished without applying any construction loads to the existing river bank. Each drill shaft had an average of eighty feet of casing installed down to an underlying limestone stratum, and then a drilled penetration into the limestone another twenty feet. Inclinometer casings and strain gauges were strategically placed in ten of the one hundred shafts to monitor the movement of the slope as new air quality control additions to the plant were constructed.

MARAVEN REFINERY • PUNTO FIJO, VENEZUELAThis project originally required 1,100 drilled shafts, 48 to 72 inches in diameter, 50 feet deep, for a connecting pipe rack 4.4 miles long between two new facilities of the “Petroleos de Venezuela” (PDVSA) Cardon Refinery in Venezuela. The soil conditions varied considerably, ranging from very soft to an unbelievably hard and abrasive coquina. The 72 inch diameter shafts were drilled to install several vertical oil pumps throughout the refinery. A. H. Beck teamed with a

local contractor who provided labor, support equipment, and materials for the project. A. H. Beck completed the original scope of the contract in six months. Consequently, A. H. Beck’s contract was amended to include additional work directly resulting from the speed of the original construction. The final scope of A. H. Beck’s contribution to the project included over 2,500 drilled shafts, and the entire job was completed in only nine months. ENGINEER: M. W. Kellogg

US-82 MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE APPROACHES • GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPIThis project consisted of constructing the bridge approaches of a new alignment for US-82 across the Mississippi River. The Mississippi approach consisted of 458 drilled shafts, ranging in diameter from 1200mm to 1650mm, and depths from 22.50 meters to 38.75 meters. The Arkansas approach consisted of 266 1200mm shafts, ranging in depth from 25.75 meters to 38.30 meters. Using temporary and permanent casings and the slurry

displaced method, A. H. Beck completed both projects in under 23 months. Each bridge column was cast on a footing supported by a cluster of drilled shafts.A sequence was developed and implemented by A. H. Beck to install and extract temporary casing on multiple drilled shafts without imparting vibrations to the concrete that was curing in the shafts within the same cluster.Owner: MDoTHighway: US-82, Greenville, MS

CHARLES LOWMAN POWER PLANT Leroy, AlabamaGULF COAST FRACTIONATORS, PLANT EXPANSION • MONT BELVIEU, TEXASA. H. Beck Foundation Company worked with Starcon International to install a total of 143 – 14” x 30’ augercast piles for a variety of pipe racks needed for the ConocoPhillips – Gulf Coast Fractionators plant expansion.  These piles were all installed in an operational plant under a variety of work conditions. Some areas had overhead racks or structures and required the use of low overhead specialty equipment which required A. H. Beck to install the piles in as little

as 15 feet of overhead clearance. Most all of the piles had some limitations to access which necessitated some innovative approaches in the construction process. Even in the low overhead, restricted work conditions, A. H. Beck was able to produce multiple piles per day using two types of drill rigs.

SUPER CONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER • WAXAHACHIE, TEXASThe super conducting super collider was a Department of Energy project to build a giant underground atom smasher. To accomplish this, they had to construct a 30 foot diameter underground tunnel 64 miles long. The tunnel was shaped like an oval and would house large electromagnetic race track that would control the atoms.

A. H. Beck was contracted to install access, alignment and vent shafts to facilitate the tunnel excavation. These access shafts varied from 18 to 30 feet in diameter to depths of 285 feet. A. H. Beck developed a system of installing a series of secant piles to stabilize the upper soft soils and high torque drilling equipment to excavate the lower shales.
