As a Hall County native, my family and I have longrelied on Northeast Georgia Health System(NGHS) for many of life’s expected and unex-pected health events -- the birth of our children, emergencies and surgeries, caring for aging par-

ents and end of life experiences with loved ones and friends. I continue tobelieve a great hospital system helps keep a community strong and grow-ing, and I want members of our donor family to know their contributionsplay a significant role in helping Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC)become Georgia’s most awarded hospital. (See page 13) Your gifts areespecially important as NGMC is a community, not-for-profit hospital thatreceives no local tax payer support.

I am pleased to introduce The Medical Center Foundation (TMCF) AnnualDonor Report and share shining examples of the impact donations makeon improving the health of our community. In 2013, 3,704 donors mademore than 55,500 gifts, pledges and planned gifts for a combined totalof $3.5 million.

Including our NGMC Braselton friends, I want to thank our loyal donorfamily and volunteers for their generous support to help TMCF reach $40million raised since 1999 through the Healthy Journey campaigns. Inorder to equal the impact of this $40 million in donations, NGHS wouldhave to increase its net operating revenue by more than $1 billion. Whilethis achievement is significant, our healthy journey continues as the needsalways outweigh the resources available.

I am proud of our community, our hospital and those who partner withTMCF to make a difference in the lives of others.

Sincerely,

James H. MooreChairman

James Jackson, MD, grew up in a very different Braselton than the one he now servesas a physician at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Braselton Clinic.

The Braselton of his childhood was sparsely populated, and many of the people whocalled it home made their living as farmers.

Today, the area is booming with new businesses, industries and subdivisions now dot-ting the landscape. It’s an area that touches four counties – Hall, Jackson, Gwinnett andBarrow – and it’s an area to which Dr. Jackson willingly returned.

He left to go to medical school and complete a residency in internal medicine at EmoryUniversity. Dr. Jackson practiced at the Diagnostic Clinic in Gainesville for 16 years, but, in2005, he returned to Braselton to practice medicine. He said the construction of NorthGeorgia Health System’s (NGHS) new hospital – Northeast Georgia Medical Center Brasel-ton – will be a boon for the growing region when it opens in Spring 2015.

Today, Dr. Jackson sees many patients he knew growing up, but the growth and pros-perity brought in a lot of patients who weren’t in the area even just a few years ago.

“There’s a significant population that needs services in this area,” Dr. Jackson said.“Once the hospital opens, it will provide convenient access to emergency care, surgeryand other advanced services. But there’s already a growing physician community here, including primary care providers and specialists, which means patients don’t have to drive20 or 30 miles to see their doctor.”

As a native of Braselton, Dr. Jackson said he is proud to be a part of the growing, excel-lent care NGHS brings to his hometown. He also believes he and other physicians shouldsupport the work of The Medical Center Foundation as a way to both give back to the com-munity and help ensure the top-quality care continues.

“The Foundation supports so many services in our community, such as Hospice ofNortheast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) and Good News Clinics,” Dr. Jackson said. “Thefunds raised through the Foundation are able to enhance those services, which makesthis a much stronger community.”

Dr. Jackson said older doctors have told him about the days when cardiac care was firstcoming to Northeast Georgia, long before the Ronnie Green Heart Center was created atNGMC in Gainesville in 2002.

“Cardiac care was pretty new. They were going out to raise money for these services, and the first thing that people would ask is what are the physicians doing to support thiseffort,” Dr. Jackson said.

He understands the question.“People want to make sure we are committed to our practice and to our community.

People want to know that we are going to be here and to be accountable. It makes sensethat people would want that from their doctors.”

Dr. Jackson particularly thinks physicians should support the Foundation as a way toshow their commitment.

“Our support of the Foundation is a reflection of who we are as a community,” Dr. Jack-son said. “It shows what we value. It may be for something that we don’t use every day,but it’s important that it’s there and enhanced by the Foundation. We are part of a greathealth system here, and the Foundation makes it stronger.”

As construction of NGMC Braselton continues, and more people continue to move intothe area, Jackson predicts the role NGHS plays in the region will continue to grow in a waythat will help shape future generations.

“I’m appreciative of what the hospital has allowed me to do as a physician,” Jacksonsaid. “It’s wonderful to be part of something that has such support throughout the com-munity. I think as doctors, we need to truly appreciate that.”

Susan Archer didn’t seem like the kind of person who might leavebehind a sizeable estate when she died.

By nearly all accounts, Archer was an unassuming woman who livedcomfortably, but modestly, in Habersham County, where she taught highschool English before she retired in 2000.

She devoted much of her life to helpingothers, often putting their needs above herown.

“That’s just the way she was, always lend-ing a hand, from the time I knew her,” said LilReed, a friend who had known Archer sincethey met as little girls in Cornelia.

After her mother’s death, Archer became a volunteer for Hospice ofNortheast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC), where she often comforted twoor three patients at a time until her own illness forced her to slow down.

“She was always there to serve,” said Teresa Warren, director of Hospiceof NGMC. “She was always available if we needed her. It was not easy forher to slow down.”

What Reed and other friends didn’t realize was that Archer was manag-ing her teacher’s salary and retirement very wisely. When she died in 2009

at the age of 69, she left a special gift toHospice in her will – a bequest of more than$237,000. Her bequest is the largest singlegift in the history of Hospice.

“It was a pretty astounding gift,” saidCarol Jewell, volunteer coordinator for Hos-

pice of NGMC. “We’re just touched by her generosity. Susan had a bigheart and a generous spirit.”

Reed said she was surprised at the size of the gift Archer left to Hospicebecause she never realized her friend had that kind of money. But she

wasn’t surprised Hospice was in Archer’s will.“She didn’t participate in a lot of the charities that you hear a lot about,”

Reed said. “She was always looking to help those groups that weren’t theobvious ones to help. And Hospice became her favorite.”

Reed said Archer’s mother may have set the example for her daughter. The two used to volunteer for a group that helped mentally challenged chil-dren. But when Archer’s mother became ill, Archer became her full-timecaregiver.

“It was during that time that she learned about Hospice,” Reed said. “Itwas obvious once she started talking about it that she was going to startvolunteering. And she did.”

Warren said Hospice of NGMC will use the gift to continue to provide thetype of services that drew Archer to the organization in the first place. Shehopes to add more massage ther-apy sessions, which are impor-tant for patients who aren’t ableto get out of bed. She also wantsto add more music therapy, whichhas proven therapeutic for pa-tients with serious illnesses.

Warren also added the moneywill help patients who need helpwith basic essentials, like keep-ing the heat and lights on.

“Even people who have savedwisely can find they quickly de-plete a lot of their resourceswhen they have a serious illness,”Warren said.

Archer began volunteeringwith Hospice of NGMC in 2001.She continued in that role fornearly nine years, until she be-came ill. At her most active,Archer would be assigned as

many as three patients, and she’d spend up to four hours a week with eachone.

“Our volunteers play a lot of roles,” Jewell said. “They go into a patient’shome to provide company for the family and give the caretakers a break sothey can run errands or just talk to their neighbors. Susan was outstandingat providing that type of support.”

Reed said her friend’s desire to help others wasn’t something that justcame along later in life. It had always been what motivated her.

“She loved her students, and I think they really loved her,” Reed said ofthe students at Habersham Central High School, where Archer taught Eng-lish. “She had a unique sense of humor and I think the students really re-acted to that.”

Once, Archer helped pay for one of her students to attend college. Reedsaid Archer had described thestudent as extremely bright, butthe family was unable to affordthe tuition.

“So she handled it, withoutany fanfare at all. That’s justthe way she did things,” Reedsaid.

Warren is grateful forArcher’s generosity in death, saying gifts of any size are im-portant for Hospice to continueits work.

“Our success depends ongifts from our community,” shesaid. “It would be hard to con-tinue without them. Gifts toHospice really help make thequality of life so much better forsomeone at the end of theirlife, and it means so much tothe families as well.”

The Gainesville law firm of Whelchel, Dunlap, Jarrard and Walker has a storied historyof community support that dates back to the days of Edgar B. Dunlap, one of the firm’searly partners.

Dunlap was very community oriented, devoting countless hours to organizations thathelped make Gainesville a better place to live. One of his favorite organizations was thelocal hospital, then called Hall County Hospital.

“Mr. Dunlap believed in the hospital and helping it grow,” said Tom Cole, managing part-ner of the firm. “He always said one of the best things we can do as a community is sup-port the hospital.”

Today, Whelchel, Dunlap, Jarrard and Walker continues its support of community activi-ties, chief among them support of the hospital, today known as Northeast Georgia MedicalCenter (NGMC).

“We don’t really do a lot of donating as a firm,” Cole said. “We look to individuals withinthe firm to do that. But the hospital and the Foundation are among the very few excep-tions. These are excellent places to spend our charitable dollars.”

Cole said supporting NGMC became easy for him after he attended the Medical CenterOpen, a golf tournament sponsored by The Medical Center Foundation. Proceeds from theannual event have helped countless community organizations such as Good News DentalClinics, Challenged Child and Friends, Gateway Domestic Violence Center and the GeorgiaMountain Food Bank, just to name a few.

“I’m moved to tears when I see where this money is going, and it’s all going back intoour community,” Cole said. “A hundred thousand, two hundred thousand is real moneyfor these groups. The Medical Center Foundation is obviously an organization that isdoing good things.”

Cole said he and others at the law firm feel led to philanthropic efforts because of theservant leadership provided by Dunlap and other predecessors in the firm.

“We feel like it is an important thing that we are doing,” Cole said. “We all live here, and we want to have a good place to live and raise our kids. We want to support thosethings that can make this a better community for everyone.”

Cole said he hopes other businesses and individuals will consider supporting the Foun-dation. He believes the Foundation is a strong entity that uses all the gifts it receives forgood works.

“If you look at the list of who the other donors are, you will see a wide range of all kindsof people from across our community,” he said. “They all want their money spent in a posi-tive way. Then look at a listing of where that money goes and you see that the communityis a better place because of your generosity.”

Cole also believes the Foundation is worthy of financial support because of the reputa-tion it has earned over the years.

“When you look at the people who are running the Foundation, you see a lot of peoplewith impeccable reputations,” he said. “A lot of trust and faith has been put into thosepeople who are raising funds, and you can feel comfortable knowing that they are spend-ing the money well.”

Cole said he is proud of the support his firm offers the Foundation.“When I look at all the organizations it helps and the lives it touches, it becomes some-

thing that you can really feel good about.”

garden

Dedicated October 28, 2013, the garden is madepossible and totally funded by a generous signaturegift to The Medical Center Foundation by long-timehospital supporters Richard and Lona Pope and theirfamily (pictured right).

The Popes’ gift creates a very special legacy andalso encourages their family to continue the spirit ofvolunteerism in the same place Richard’s parentsserved for 60 years. Beginning in the late 1950’s,Richard’s father, the late Ralph Pope, served on theHospital Authority, and his mother, the late Ocie RichPope, worked as a nurse and at one time acting ad-ministrator of Hall County Hospital. “Mrs. Ocie,” asshe was affectionately known, was the motivatingforce behind the establishment of the Hall School ofNursing, which is now the Brenau University NursingSchool.

Today, Richard and Lona are life members of TheMedical Center Auxiliary and serve as trustees of

The Medical Center Foundation. The Pope Family Garden is one of six therapeutic

landscapes on the NGMC Gainesville campus (TheAuxiliary Patio Garden, Anne’s Garden, The AuxiliaryLove Light Garden, Wilheit-Keys Peace Garden andNell’s Prayer Garden), which have been completelyfunded through philanthropy. Each garden has atremendous impact on the Medical Center’s abilityto provide destinations of hope and healing as wellas stress-reducing environments for patients, theirfamilies, visitors and staff.
