A LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENTThe 2013/14 season marked the fifth year of the Institute for Learning, Access and Training. Built on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s rich history of educational and community engagement programming that originated in the early part of the twentieth century, the Institute connects individuals and communities to the extraordinary musical resources of one of the world’s great orchestras—the CSO. In doing so, programs of the Institute provide entry points for everyone—from very young children to senior citizens; from emerging professional musicians to incarcerated youth—to experience all that music has to offer.

Since its launch, the Institute has flourished because of the exceptional leadership provided by CSO Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma. Together they have made it our mission to forge a bright future for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association by sustaining the legacy of our great Orchestra while positioning it as a leader in creating innovative musical experiences for people at Symphony Center and beyond.

During the 2013/14 season, the Institute played a central role in moving this mission forward. It is with pleasure and pride that I summarize for you the achievements of our work last season as we look ahead to a bright future.

The CITIZEN MUSICIAN INITIATIVE grew and evolved considerably. Over one third of the CSO participated in Citizen Musician activities in greater Chicago and with the Orchestra on tour. Their efforts creatively engaged people in elementary school, university, conservatory, retirement community, hospital and various social service organization settings. Our programming for at-risk and incarcerated youth thrived. We offered our second residency at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in partnership with Music in Prisons, and presented the Lullaby Project—a songwriting workshop for teen mothers—in partnership with the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall and the Thresholds Mother’s Project. Additionally, we piloted a new Citizen Musician Fellowship program that immersed select Civic Orchestra musicians in rigorous artistic and professional development. Building on the pilot season’s success, a two-year program launches this fall with a new class of eight Citizen Musician Fellows.

TRAINING the next generation of musicians remained a vital part of our program portfolio. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago celebrated its 95th season with a robust series of free, full orchestra concerts in Orchestra Hall featuring internationally acclaimed guest conductors and a collaboration with singers from the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as well as an open rehearsal with Riccardo Muti. Yo-Yo Ma provided invaluable mentorship to the Civic Orchestra through a season-long “artistic challenge” which culminated in a fantastical full orchestra concert of the musicians’ own design. The Percussion Scholarship Program offered two recitals and participated for the third time in the CSO’s holiday spectacular, Welcome Yule!

Through our many LEARNING Programs, we began to develop a suite of experiences for students and families that form a pathway of lifelong engagement with music that begins as early as three years old and extends into adulthood. Not only did we present CSO concerts to tens of thousands of people, we deepened the concert experience and made the CSO more accessible to a broader audience through enhanced preparation, curriculum materials for use in the classroom, and school partnerships. We also began to forge connections with audiences and young musicians in the western suburbs by presenting concerts and workshops in Hinsdale, Naperville, and Addison.

Further, the CSO demonstrated its commitment to advocacy for the Chicago Public Schools Arts Education Plan. As the Plan moved into its first phase of implementation, the Institute, with Yo-Yo Ma as its champion, raised significant visibility for the work while serving as a key stakeholder in increasing CPS students’ access to music education.

Music has intrinsic value, and we demonstrate that every day through our many programs. We also know that to ensure that our work is sustainable and strategic, it is critical we reflect on and measure the impact of all we do. In 2013/14, the Institute benefited from our second year of work with WolfBrown, an internationally reputable evaluation firm that provided insight into the depth and breadth of our programs as well as thought partnership for our strategic vision. With their guidance, we have taken a giant leap forward in understanding and sharing the short- and long-term effects of our work, and begun to expand staff capacity for making evaluation a central and ongoing component of how we plan and refine programming.

The Institute’s achievements last season were many, and they were crowned in early June when CSO Association Board Chair Jay Henderson announced to the CSO Board of Trustees that a gift of annual and endowment support in the amount of $15 million had been given by The Negaunee Foundation to support the activities of the Institute for Learning, Access and Training. This extraordinary gift was given to honor and sustain outgoing CSOA President Deborah Rutter’s commitment to education and community engagement. In recognition of this transformative gift, the Institute was renamed in perpetuity as the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to this exemplary act of philanthropy, the world-class learning and training programs of the CSOA will be shared with hundreds of thousands of people in this city and across the globe for many years to come.

Indeed, 2013/14 was a season worth celebrating. As we begin 2014/15 and prepare for the many exciting things yet to come, I extend my sincere gratitude to the enormous and dedicated family that enlivens the CSOA with such incredible generosity, enthusiasm and advocacy. Through the Citizen Musician Initiative, we work toward something larger than ourselves—the power of music to transform lives and build community. Thank you for all that you give to and do for this organization, the art form, and the broader community we serve.

Warmly,

Charles Grode Vice PresidentNegaunee Music Instituteat the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
