DECEMBER 15, 2013 . THIRD SUDAY OF ADVET The poor have the good news proclaimed to them." Jesus caps his catalogue of miracles with this unexpected statement. In the same sentence where he reminds his listeners that he has cured the blind, the lame, the deaf, the sick, and even raised the dead, Jesus con- cludes by mentioning preaching the good news to the poor. How did that make the list of supernatural cures? What's so miraculous about good news? Well, in this case, the news is that the Messiah has finally come, in the most miraculous of ways, as the incarnate Son of God conceived in the womb of a virgin. This is a message of spiritual heal- ing: he comes to "save his people from their sins" (Mt 1:21). The poor are not just those in physical poverty, but those whose sins have impoverished their souls. This of course applies to us. The poverty of our own sinfulness-of the alienation we create between our- selves and God-can be overcome by the forgiveness offered to us in Christ. Because of this, we have cause to rejoice! On this Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, we are encouraged to rejoice. We pause in this season of anticipation to remember that, in truth, our hopes have already been fulfilled. God has "visited and brought redemption to his people" (Lk 1:68). He is among us, saving us even now! We need not look to the past to witness Christ's astonishing acts. His work in our souls, right here and now, is miracle enough. 2640 STONEY RIDGE ROAD AVON, OHIO 44011 Rectory: 440-934-4212 • Fax: 440-934-0507 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.stmaryavon.org School: 440-934-6246 • Convent: 440-934-5173 FR. Christmas Gifts For Avon Residents: What better way to give a gift to your child, grandchild, (or any Board Game player for that matter) than with a unique, one-time-only, gift that also supports St. Mary? The Avon-opoly Board games are in and they feature photos from around Avon on the box and businesses/organizations from Avon on the Board. This was designed by Parishioners and game produc-tion was paid for by the sponsors. They are only $25 each and they are available now! You can call 440-773-0848 or buy them online at www.avonstmary.org/avonopoly where you can also see what the game looks like. Remember, St. Mary will receive 100% of the $25.

St. Mary Liturgical Commission: Is seeking volun-teers for Lectors (reading at mass) and for Eucharistic Ministry (helping with Holy Communion). We especially need new Eucharistic Ministers. Volunteers would help out for mass for two weeks in a row—only every 6-8 weeks. You would be assigned the same mass time and receive a schedule always in advance. There are open-ings at all masses: Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 8 am, 10 am and Noon. We are also in need of a substitute Eucharistic Minister to help with Holy Communion and a substitute Lector to recite the Rosary on Tuesdays from 9:45 to 10:45 am at Avon Oaks Nursing Home. Individual training for fall session are now being offered. Please call the rectory at 934-4212 or Nancy Danese at 934-4277 for details.
