The seasons cycle into spring — and so do Center City riders The cyclists are out in full force as temperatures heat up. Bikes are locked and lined up along every city street, and cyclists are riding, like this one, down 13th Street between Chestnut and Walnut streets. Matthew Royer was found alive in North Carolina.

Royer, the Colleg-eville, Pa., native who never made it back to Montgomery County after he left the Univer-sity of Rhode Island for summer break on May 16, was found Thursday unharmed, state police said.

Where the 21-year-old student had been or was found was not disclosed. The family requested privacy.

On Monday, Royer’s mother Janet made a tearful public plea for her son’s return after state police said they believed the student willingly went missing. METRO

Ex-Chickie’s manager fi les whistleblower suit

The former manager of a South Jersey Chickie’s & Pete’s sports bar filed a federal whistleblower lawsuit against the restau-

rant chain and its owner Peter Ciarrocchi last week, according to court docu-ments.

Sharon Chase, 45, who managed the Egg Harbor, N.J., location, claims she was fired months after she raised concerns to federal officials about the chain’s payroll practices, docu-ments show.

Before Chase was fired, however, she was accused of undercharging for pri-

vate parties, according to the lawsuit. Chase dis-putes the allegations.

The restaurant has de-nied any wrongdoing.

Chase, who started as manager in February 2010, was fired on Jan. 11, 2013.

Dozens of former and current employees have filed federal unfair labor practice lawsuits against the bar, claiming staff’s tips were skimmed, among other unfair labor

practice allegations.Since the allegations

came to light, the chain has incorporated new pay-roll policies for all employ-ees.

Chickie’s & Pete’s, headquartered in Philadel-phia, has 10 locations, and several kiosks in sports and amusement parks.

• According to the suit, Chase never had any disciplinary action or warnings made against her.

Police are looking for Johnson, whose last known address is Wyncote Avenue in West Oak Lane. He’s described as black and 43 years old with a beard and mustache.

The second suspect is described by police as a black male 40 to 50 years old, maybe with a fisher-man’s hat. METRO

Crash

Infant, man hurt after collision with SEPTA bus An infant suffered a head injury and a 25-year-old man suffered a back injury Thursday after the SEPTA bus they were riding on was involved in a car ac-cident, officials said.

A car crashed into the back of a Route 53 bus around 1:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon on the 4800 block of Wayne Avenue in Germantown.

The car erupted into fire after striking the bus, but the ex-tent of the blaze was not known, SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said.

The 6-month-old baby suffered a “bump to the head” and the man suffered a “minor back injury” and were taken to Ein-stein Medical Center for treatment. METRO

Mayor Michael Nutter’s proposed cigarette and liquor-by-the-drink tax bills were introduced in City Council Thursday, and were met with some ideas from members.

City Council President Darrell Clarke edited the cigarette tax so all the revenue would be used to fund the school dis-trict. Nutter’s original bill directed a portion of the money to help fund a health department’s anti-smoking program.

Nutter’s proposal in-cludes a $2 tax hike on

cigarettes and an increase on the liquor-by-the-drink tax from 10 percent to 15 percent. Along with plans for improved tax collec-tions, the city expects to raise an estimated $95 million for the school dis-trict, which faces a $300

million deficit.Clarke said state law-

makers must first ap-prove the bills before City Council can vote on them.

At last week’s City Council meeting, Coun-cilman Bill Green said Nutter’s tax plan will not make it past the state house.

“While I support the mayor’s revenue propos-als for schools, they are unlikely to pass the Gen-eral Assembly, and frank-ly, missed the point,” Green added. “Even if they do, there is no more help coming from the general assembly so there will be a $200 mil-lion gap.”

The deadline for City Council to approve the city’s budget is June 30.

D iscussion begins. Nutter’s tax bills, intended to fund the school district, were introduced to the City Council on Thursday.

6www.metro.usHOLIDAY EDITION, May 24-27, 2013 NEWS

I’m an optimistic guy. I don’t spend my days fret-ting about choking on fish bones, being brained by falling masonry or being waylaid by gravediggers. This year’s drumbeat of calamities, however, has made me a little twitchy about the dangers of terrorism, malfeasance, cruelty, carelessness and natural disasters.

But as I pondered a chart from the National Safety Council this week on how the lives of Ameri-cans end, I was struck by the fact that most of us spend far too much time fearing the wrong things.

For example, the No. 1 killer stalking all of us is … well, ourselves. One in 6 will be taken by heart disease, 1 in 7 will go to cancer and 1 in 29 will fall to strokes. Cars, as we all learned in Driver’s Ed or in the “Fast and Furious”

movies, are constant threats. One in 98 of us will die on highways. Suicides, accidental poi-sonings, slips and trips all crowd the top of the list of potential killers.

Then the numbers get goofy. Your odds of dying from overheating are twice as high as your odds of being taken in

a terrible storm. You’re more likely to be killed by hornets than by an earthquake. And your neighbor’s dog has a bet-ter chance of putting you into a grave than does the next big flood.

Obviously, if you’re a roofer with a drink-ing problem or a drug dealer with a quick trigger finger, your statistical horizon may tilt a bit against you. So circum-stances matter, but I still think perspective matters more. My point: All the bad news lately has made the world seem like a very frightening place, but most of us should spend more time worrying about our general health and welfare. A long, healthy life will depend more on that than on some exotic threat that the odds say will probably never come your way.

BEATING THE ODDS ON THINGS THAT

KILL YOU Quoted

“ … a s I pondered a chart from the National Safety Council this week on how the lives of Americans end, I was struck by the fact that most of us spend far too much time fearing the wrong things. ”

Long-time activist Medea Benjamin was at the cen-ter of attention yesterday after she repeatedly inter-rupted President Obama as he spoke about the U.S. drone policy and Guanta-namo Bay.

After several loud outbursts from Benajmin, Obama said, “Part of free speech is you being able to speak, but also me being able to speak. And you listening.”

Benjamin, a longtime protester and founder of the social justice move-ment Code Pink, was removed by security

“It’s really scary,” Benjamin told Metro of yelling at the president.

“I was listening intently and was more and more disappointed as I heard him talk about drones and not using his power to say they will take them out of the CIA. And then Guantanamo Bay — he is commander in chief! He could close it today.” Benjamin also took the op-portunity to call on Obama to release Shaker Aamer, a Saudi Arabian citizen who has been held at Gitmo since 2002 but has not been charged.

“There are 102 men in Guantanamo Bay who are starving themselves, 30 being brutally force fed,” Benjamin said. “They need justice.” CASSANDRA GARRISON

Quoted

“I appreciate that we have the ability to speak out, but more important to me is to have policies that coincide with the Geneva Convention and international law.” Benjamin

Father of man shot by FBI believes son was tortured The father of a Chechen immigrant killed during ques-tioning over his links with one of the Boston Marathon bombings suspects said on Thurs-day he plans to travel to the United States where he suspects his son was tortured and killed.

Ibragim Todashev, 27, was killed by a fed-eral agent in his apart-ment complex when he became violent dur-ing questioning over his ties to Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of two brothers suspected of planting two bombs at the marathon.

“I suspect that they tortured my son and that he suffered a pain-ful death,” said Abdul-baki Todashev, wiping away tears at the home he shares with one of his wives in Chechnya. REUTERS

British police arrested two more people on Thursday in a hunt for ac-complices of two British men of Nigerian descent accused of hacking a sol-dier to death on a London street in revenge for wars in Muslim countries.

The two suspected killers, now under guard in hospitals, had been known to security ser-vices before Wednesday’s daylight attack, security sources said.

Another man and a woman, both aged 29, were detained on sus-picion of conspiracy to murder.

One of the assailants, filmed calmly justifying the killing as he stood by the body holding a knife and meat cleaver in bloodied hands, was named by acquaintances as 28-year-old Londoner Michael Adebolajo — a British-born convert to Islam.

London killing

‘I know the killer’ The suspected killer of a British soldier on Wednesday has been identified as Michael Adebolajo, and is known to fringe Islamic groups in London.

“I know him as Mujahid, he attended our activities for five years from 2005,” preacher Anjem Choudary, former leader of the banned organization Al Muhajir-oun, told Metro. “He was very quiet and practiced nonviolent Islam, I can’t imagine what happened to him after leaving us.”

Choudary, who has at-tempted to create Sharia-law zones in London, condemned the killing but described it as a “wake-up call” over Brit-ish foreign policy in the Muslim world. “It would be foolish to ignore this. Young people may see it as an inspiration.”

Mainstream Muslim groups have made public statements against the killer, but the Muslim Public Affairs Committee demanded they go fur-ther in tackling radicals. “We need to teach angry

young men to express their views within the political process. Instead of talking about theol-ogy, we need to teach them to be citizens,” said spokesman Tahir Shah. “Most institutions are failing to connect with youth.” KIERON MONKS

ZACH GALIFIANAKISThe “Hangover” star promises this is the fi nal installment. No, seriously.

‘I THINK IT’S KIND OF OPEN-ENDED, BUT AT LEAST [ALAN] SEEMS LIKE

HE’S ON THE RIGHT PATH’

Going serious

“ It’s a comedy, and Alejandro hasn’t made one. He’s a great fi lmmaker, obviously. The

little I can tell you about is you kind of know you’re

in the hands of a really experienced

technician and great fi lmmaker. It’s been a really great work experience for me. I’m there

with really serious actors who’ve done really accomplished work. I think I’m the only one in the cast who’s never won a

trophy — and it will probably stay that way for my whole career. But it’s nice

to be mixed up with these serious actors

doing a comedy. ”

Galifi anakis, on fi lming “Bird-man,” a comedy from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who’s known for heavier fi lms, like “Babel.”

What’s one more trip to Las Vegas between friends? “The Hangover Part III” finds Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and loose cannon Alan (Zach Galifianakis) team-ing up for one last road trip gone wrong. Only this time, Galifianakis’ Alan goes from comic relief to main character, which is a particularly risky proposi-tion — at least according to Galifianakis.

Alan really takes center stage in this installment.Yeah, as disheartening as that is. [Laughs] No, I mean we’ll see if the audi-ence thinks that an Alan storyline is sustainable for a movie — I mean a lot of Alan. There’s a lot of Alan in this. I was excited because we got to explore Alan a little bit rather than have him be just a one-dimensional character that’s kind of weird and

saying random things. In this third installment I think there’s a little bit more of an emotional arc with him, which I appreci-ate. It’s more of a story than just jokes with Alan this time. I don’t know at the end of this where Alan goes. I think it’s kind of

open-ended, but at least he seems like he’s on the right path.

I was going to ask where you see him fi ve years from now.Running the Tea Party. [Laughs] No, that’s just a good-natured joke. I don’t

know where Alan would be. Hopefully he’s married, and he probably drives by Phil’s house a lot and honks to see if Phil will come out, and then Phil maybe looks through his blinds to see who it is, if it’s Alan outside. Every other Thursday Phil will

come out and say hi to him.

They’ve been billing this as the fi nal installment. Why is the trilogy the standard for fi lm series?Well, part of it is over-staying your welcome, I think. After the first one I was fine with just leaving well enough alone, to be honest. But then it was so fun to do the movies, and I thought there was more to explore, ultimately. I’ve never really thought about the trilogy thing. The good thing about the third one is it allows kind of a nice goodbye. With the second one there’s no closure, really. There was an event, they’ll go on with their lives. This one seems like there’s a little bit of closure.

Q&A

The “Hangover” fi lms have been phenom-enally successful. If this one follows suit, do you think you’ll have to try to talk them out of mak-ing a fourth one?

Well, I think it’s bad to do movies because of economic gain. As an entertainer or an actor, you want to try to do other things and challenge yourself to

try other roles, and it’s time to move on. I think everybody feels that, the director and the other actors — and not out of anything but love. There won’t be a fourth.

Latest ‘Fast & Furious’ up to speed

Whereas some sequels (“The Hangover Part II”) repeat the original, and others (“The Hangover Part III”) try something new, the “Fast & Furious” films are that other kind of fran-chise beast: a constantly re-inventing shape-shifter. It can’t even decide on a con-

sistent title template. Don’t confuse “Fast & Furious,” the fourth entry, with “The Fast and the Furious,” the first. (Only the “Rambo” titles are more confusing.) Over the six films, key ac-tors have disappeared as their careers soared, only to return once their careers waned. The rest are ex-pendable.

But the backbone is al-ways the same. Supersized throwbacks to Roger Cor-man drive-in programmers from the ’60s, they offer light melodrama meant to do no more than connect the sporadic, OTT set piec-es. The series apex, called simply “Fast Five,” featured cars somehow powerful enough to drag a bank vault across a bridge. “Fast & Furious 6” — only called “Furious 6” onscreen, amusingly — isn’t as tran-scendently ridiculous. But it does have a tank.

If you must know, this one finds Vin Diesel and Paul Walker’s speed de-mons/world-class thieves working out a deal with

federal agent Dwayne Johnson — there chiefly to make Diesel look like DJ Qualls — to clear their tarnished names. There’s a second group of speed demons/world-class thieves on the prowl, this one meaner than the Diesel-

Walker crew. Their fearless leader (Luke Evans) spouts Nazi-like jargon about pre-cision and not being afraid to cut off (or gorily gouge) a weak link. Evans’ crew also includes Diesel’s movie ex Michelle Rodriguez, pre-sumed to have been mur-

dered in No. 4. But she’s back anyway, and with am-nesia, as if this series didn’t already play like a roided-up, adrenaline-junkie soap opera.

There are a couple of lines about Diesel and Walker getting older and

needing to settle down, though their contracts willsay otherwise. Like “FastFive,” this one’s more of an ensemble piece anyway, with plenty of comic relief from Ludacris and TyreseGibson, and a delightful knock-down, drag-out girlfight between Rodriguezand special guest star GinaCarano, whose MMA styl-ings (previously seen in“Haywire”) could use evenmore screentime. Direc-tor Justin Lin has been the franchise-runner since thethird, “Tokyo Drift.” Somesporadic overplotting sug-gests he’s ready to move on. (Which he is; “Fast & Furious 7” will be handledby the guy who made“Saw,” for some reason.)But Lin frequently remem-bers to pummel us withawesome nonsense, nonemore awesomely nonsen-sical than a climax set ona runway evidently longer than some countries.

“Bridesmaids” did not in-vent the type of film where-in a vocationally stunted woman loses her bestie to adulthood. But if that film were shot on a very small budget, filmed in black-and-white, bore influences from the French New Wave — and did not include any scenes in which someone poops in a busy street — it might nearly resemble Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha.” “Bridesmaids” also had a foundation in deep trauma, about the pain of being the last among your

peers to settle down. “Fran-ces Ha” goes deeper with this idea, and even features better jokes.

Greta Gerwig plays Frances, a 20-something in an unprofitable nonpro-fession (dancing), living in a bubble of comfortable security with roommate Sophie (Mickey Summer, Sting’s wry daughter). Then Sophie simply and sud-denly finds a man. With no one to lean on as a crutch, questionable living situa-tions, ill-advised Paris trips (funded “with that credit card I got in the mail”) and other, sometimes cruel hu-miliations follow.

What makes this toler-able, and even enjoyable, are Gerwig and Baumbach. Gerwig has a loopy, vague-ly medicated charm where she blurts out embarrass-ing admissions, as though she wasn’t even trying to

stop them. Baumbach is a wit with a gift for sharp, self-aware one-liners. The dialogue leans more to-ward Gerwig, but the film has the tight shape of its director’s films (“The Squid and the Whale”). Like its hero, it never succumbs to self-pity. Even when Fran-ces hits a strange and kind of rock bottom, she’s cau-tiously semi--optimistic, puttering along as though

she was simply used to liv-ing terribly.

As a director, Baum-bach’s mood is even bright-er. The pace is fast, made faster by giant ellipses in which major events are simply omitted. He even borrows, almost shame-lessly, a scene from “Holy Motors” director Leos Carax’s 1986 film “Mauvais Sang,” where Denis Lavant sprinted as fast as he could

down an empty city street at night to David Bowie’s “Modern Love.” Frances does the same thing, only the street is crowded, the daylight beaming, her mood even brighter. “Fran-ces Ha” should be more de-pressing than it is. Luckily, it’s usually the opposite.

A generic title, a generic movie

A perpetual also-ran be-hind Pixar and Dream-Works Animation, Fox’s Blue Sky Studios previ-ously brought us “Rio” and the absurdly profit-able “Ice Age” series. Blue Sky movies have a strictly good-enough-for-govern-ment-work feel. Popular without penetrating the zeitgeist, these are mar-ginally adequate entertain-ments destined to be for-gotten on the drive home from the movie theater.

Blue Sky’s latest, the blandly titled “Epic,” is more of the same. In-spired by William Joyce’s “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs,” it’s an overcrowded hodge-podge of familiar tropes and Xeroxed bits from

other, better movies. It’s the kind of film that even while watching it for the first time you could swear you’ve seen it before.

Amanda Seyfried voices Mary Katherine, a tweener who’s shrunk down and embroiled in a pint-sized war going on in the woods. There, the brave and noble Leaf Men (led by an up-tight Colin Farrell) do daily battle with the sinister Boggans, gargoyle-like creatures who soar around on bats spreading rot and decay.

The rules of “Epic”’s universe are so needlessly over-complicated that the majority of the movie is just characters standing around explaining the story to one another. But if you’ve seen “Lord of the Rings,” “Avatar” or even “Ferngully: The Last Rain-forest,” you’ll already be way ahead of them. The nicest thing you can say is that at least the movie practices the green envi-ronmental message that it preaches: The entire screenplay is recycled.

Animation fantasy. In “Epic,” a tweener hangs with talking animals you’ve almost certainly seen before.

Aziz Ansari and Amanda Seyfried were turned into a cartoon slug and teen for “Epic.” BLUE SKY STUDIOS

Documentary. Ricky Jay’s life story: A tale of magic and grift ing Since the 1970s, Ricky Jay has been a staple of stage, TV and movies, where he’s alternated between two personas: showboating magician and placidly smirking character actor for the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and David Mamet. A great film about Jay would do as he does: try to hoodwink the audience via some elaborate and engaging ruse. But a good film will do. If anyone deserves a fawning Great Man doc, it’s someone who has kept up practices that were dead long before he was even born, and done so with a presence both warm and worthy of suspicion.

As interviewee, Jay isn’t exactly cagey, but he does only reveal what he seems to think may be interesting to a larger au-dience. (His late-bloomer marriage is kept for the

final minutes.) The bulk of the film is TV clips, offered as giant, delight-fully inelegant blocks. A regular for Dinah Shore and Merv Griffin, he’s shown as a longhair on “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert,” sharing an episode with Kansas and the Sex Pistols. Elsewhere he smoothly and satisfy-ingly tricks Steve Martin out of $51. The man himself remains elusive. But that’s as it should be. MATT PRIGGE

It’s a movie about a store

A glossy, 90-minute info-mercial for Bergdorf Good-man — New York City’s most luxurious store — this self-serving documentary will best be appreciated by fashionistas who strive and aspire to live the fantasy that the store inspires. Un-folding as a series of vari-ous chapters, “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s” takes viewers behind the scenes of the exclusive store with-out revealing anything par-ticularly special.

Viewers meet Linda Fargo, the store’s fashion director, who counsels de-signers. She shows and tells how exclusive lines are bought and developed. In contrast, artists and deco-rators are seen busily devel-oping the holiday display “Carnival of the Animals.”

But even for those wowed by the store’s celebrated windows, this running vi-gnette grows tiresome and repetitive.

The film’s best se-quence showcases Betty, a personal shopper whose wry and honest approach to selling has become jus-tifiably legendary. Viewers will crave her advice (and fashion sense), and admire her sharp tongue.

The store itself isn’t showcased as well. Its his-tory and the 16-room apart-ment perched on top of the building are discussed, albeit rather dryly. The famous shoe salon — aka every girl’s dream — is shown, but what resonates is that they have trouble keeping a pair of $6,000 shoes in stock. Still, it’s hard to develop a deep, emotional connection to this film, which makes viewers feel like window-shoppers once removed.

Moreover, no one in “Scatter My Ashes at Berg-dorf’s” has a bad thing to say about the store. This suggests that Bergdorf’s is a magical place for its wealthy, discerning clien-tele — and the bag lady who once pulled out thou-sands of dollars to pur-chase a fur coat, much to the shock and delight of the associate trying to get her away from the high-priced merchandise.

MICHAEL DOUGLAS

The star talks about meeting Liberace, the man he plays in “Behind the Candelabra.”

‘HE WAS A CHARMING MAN’

he falls in love with Matt Damon, “Behind the Candelabra.” In it, Douglas plays the entertainer in the latter part of his life. The film reunites him with his “Traffic” director, Steven Soderbergh.

What are your memories of Liberace?I met him once, briefly, when I was 12. At the time, my father [Kirk Douglas] owned a house in Palm Springs, close to Lee [as Douglas calls Liberace]. One sunny day, this Rolls Royce stopped in front of the house and Lee stepped out. He was wearing lots of gold and the sunlight was reflecting off his jewelry. He was a sort of pre-Elton John. He invited that style. He was a charming man. He loved entertaining and beautiful things.

How did Soderbergh convince you to do the part?In 2001, when we were

years later, Steven came across this book, “Behind the Candelabra.” This happened right after my cancer, and offering me this role was a great gift. I will be eternally grateful to Matt and Steven for wait-ing until I got better.

How did you identify with this role?I normally play the bad or ambiguous guy. But once you start doing your research on Lee, you real-ize that he was a generous man. It’s the first time that I play a famous character. I was a bit nervous at first because Lee was a strong Polish guy, much bigger and more built than me. So for me, it was all about getting his voice right. I watched documentaries and as I don’t play the piano, I focused on mim-icking his hand gestures.

Not long ago, it would have seemed unlikely that man’s man Michael Doug-las would play Liberace, the piano star who some-how tricked the world into thinking he was straight. Times have changed, though, and now Douglas is doing a movie in which

filming “Traffic,” Steven asked me, “Have you ever thought of doing some-thing about Liberace?” I wondered how that char-acter could possibly make him think of me. I was a bit paranoid at the time, so I tried to thank him and slip away! But then,

Q&A

How did you get the physical look of Liberace? When we first saw the masks, we were horrified! It was like we had just walked out of a plastic surgery! But it had to look as real as possible and so we spent a lot of time in the makeup chair. And before you know it, everything seems to come together. You put on the right outfit, have the right hairdo, and there you go.

Matt Damon plays the lover of Liberace (Michael Douglas) in “Behind the Candelabra.” / HBO

Liberace gets the movie he’d probably have always wanted “Behind the Candelabra” is not the first TV movie about flamboyant piano man Liberace and his secret, May-December relationship with his “chauffeur” Scott Thorson. In 1988, a year after Lib-erace’s death from AIDS-related complications, dueling television films aired. Campfests, they re-minded the people of that era of their lousy gaydar — that the mainstream had allowed a lifelong bachelor who rocked flowing robes and heavy rings to become the world’s highest-paid entertainer. Steven Soder-bergh’s new film — his threatened last — isn’t quite as crass.

Matt Damon plays Thorson, a strapping ani-mal trainer with a Farah Fawcett flip ’do who meets Liberace (Michael Douglas) when he’s 18. (Damon,

incidentally, is 42.) The two wind up together for a decade, some of it warm and magical, much of it unpleasant and nightmar-ish.

Richard LaGravenese’s script deserves a lot of credit for not shying away from gay content, which is one reason this is playing HBO, not the nation’s multiplexes. It still follows

a simple rise-and-fall trajectory, with the polite, vaguely stupid Thorson, eventually succumbing to “Boogie Nights”-style coke tirades. Soderbergh’s cold and bemused tone gives it personality, and brings out some of the story’s weirder ideas. The craziest tidbit is that the Liberace convinced Thorson to undergo plastic surgery to look more like him.

Predictably, Douglas walks off with the movie. But don’t discount Damon. The real Thorson may have been dumb — he cur-rently sits in jail for credit card fraud — but Damon’s Thorson is thick without being an idiot, as though he was aware he was mak-ing bad decisions but not smart enough to think of a way out not involving drugs and tantrums. Baroness is back with an older album and two new members. / DOUG SEYMOUR

Baroness: Take my bones away

Metalheads united in a rare moment of emotional synchronicity last summer, when Baroness suffered a terrible touring accident — a bus crash in England that left important bones shattered and important people sidelined.

This isn’t that story. This is the story of the difficult aftermath. This is the story of how integ-rity trumps superficiality. At the time of the crash, the band was a critically acclaimed crossover act whose recently released album “Yellow & Green” had captivated audiences

and critics with its pow-erful and somber melodic muscle.

“The predictability of the album cycle was wrenched away from us, so now the net of safety and predictability is a thing of the past,” says Baroness nucleus John Bai-zley. “I think most people have made up their minds on whether they like the album at this point. And things have changed — in terms of lineup, in terms of perspective. This tour is in gratitude to our fans who continued to pay at-tention to us all while we were out of commission momentarily.”

Baizley’s run with Bar-oness has seen a number of lineup changes. With this tour, fans will see a completely new rhythm section as drummer Allen Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni recover from

the accident. “We’ve just lost two members, so 50 percent of our sound has changed. So in some ways , we’ve taken a very big step in a different direction, musically speaking. And I think the important thing is to embrace that. That’s the new existence, and you work therein.”

Bus-bruised warriors. Singer John Baizley talks life and touring after tragedy.

1 Julianne Moore, 52, is getting tired of the double standard for women when it comes to getting older in Hol-lywood. “Men aren’t asked about age. Men aren’t asked about their children,” she tells DuJour magazine. “Not that these things aren’t important, but I do feel like it becomes reduc-tive when a woman’s life becomes, ‘Talk to me about your kids and how you feel about plastic surgery.’”

I get it, Julianne. I re-ally do. But, like, I think even the most ardent feminists want to know how you look so good at 52 and have a stellar career and a family. It is scarily amazing.

Bynes not

happy with In Touch

Amanda Bynes is not happy with how In Touch Weekly has been portraying her, and who can blame her when the cover story on her gets a “Destroyed by fame” headline? But that’s not why Bynes is up in arms. The maga-zine apparently used “fake altered photos” with the story “because they f---ing hate me,” Bynes explained on Twitter. (The magazine also claimed to have photos taken inside Bynes’ New York City apartment.) “They used an old shot of me on the cover with a bad angle of my old nose before I had surgery to reshape my profile and to remove the webbing from my eyes,” Bynes tweeted. “I have to sue because that’s not my apartment, those aren’t my clothes!”

She’s in control: Janet Jackson is a billionaire

I’ve always been slightly fascinated by Janet Jackson. She is blessed with the family talent without, it seems, being too touched by that Jackson weirdness which so engulfed Michael and La Toya.

It took a while and a lot of ups and downs (one crazy nipple exposure and the tragic death of her bother among them) but now it appears the 46-year-old’s longevity has paid off: After several decades in the entertainment indus-try, Jackson has report-edly hit billionaire status, according to Variety. Jack-son’s income has included $458 million for concert

tours, $304 million for film and television work, $260 million from album sales, plus more than $81 million from sponsor-ship deals. With the new income milestone, Jackson joins an elite club that also includes her husband, Wis-sam Al Mana, who became a billionaire thanks to investments in the Middle East.

I think I speak for Jackson fans everywhere when I say: You go girl. You’ve had quite the ride and quite the family. En-joy flying around in those gold-plated jet packs or whatever billionaires do with all of their money. You deserve it.

Friday Nite Backyard Barbecue at Trestle Inn

We know that there are plenty of cookouts and block parties to choose from this weekend, so let us help make your decision easier: this barbecue includes go-go dancer Miss Scarlett Fever. Oh yeah, and there’s a free whiskey sour in it for you

(between 5-7 p.m.). This is the debut

of what will be a weekly party featuring a rotating lineup of dancers and food trucks. For the kickoff, it’s Yumtown. That’s the food truck — we already mentioned the dancer.

Friday5-9 p.m.339 N. 11th St.

Mayfair Block Party at Bainbridge Street Barrel House Barrel House, a ca-sual spot with elevated American cuisine on Bainbridge, is hosting its first Mayfair block party. It’s a way of showing appreciation for the neighborhood that has embraced it in the few months that it’s been open. For you, it’s an oppor-tunity to down some craft suds and $5 fare. Practice your throw, because there will be a dunk tank with pro-ceeds going to Morris Animal Rescue.

Meet the baddies of Penn Jersey Roller Derby as they host one mean barbecue. First, though, is the free three-hour derby workshop with coach Skip Schoen. You don’t have to be evil on wheels to show up and hang: The event is open to the public.

Take a trip to Chadds Ford, about 40 minutes from Center City, for the winery’s Memorial Day week-end celebration, com-plete with live music, catered treats and frozen sangria slush-ies. Bring a blanket for a classy picnic.

There isn’t a language barrier when it comes to the music of Prince Royce.

The Latin music super-star rocked the crowd at Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival last summer — even though he sang his set in Spanish.

“It was such a big ex-perience seeing so many genres [of music] and eth-nicities getting together as one,” Royce says. “I was singing in Spanish, and the people were dancing. It was really nice.”

Royce is a star in Latin America, but he’s certainly made in America. He was born in the U.S. to Domini-can parents and raised in the Bronx. His 2010 self-titled debut was a No. 1 smash on the Latin charts, and his singles routinely rack up more than 30 mil-lion views on YouTube.

“There are so many kids like me growing up and raised Latin who were born in the United States, from mixed cultures,” Royce says. “I try to proj-ect that in my songs and

my performances.”It’s fitting that Royce is

set to headline the El Zol Fest Saturday at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. El Zol, broadcast on 1340 AM, strives to appeal to listeners who speak both Spanish and English.

The foundation of Royce’s sound is bachata, the guitar-based music that originated in the countryside barrios of the Dominican Republic and has gone on to rival salsa and merengue music in much of Latin America. In the U.S., the music is still

only regionally popular, but groups like Aventura have secured such a stand-ing that they performed at the White House for President Obama in 2009.

Royce is making his music more mainstream by adding R&B accents and singing some songs in English, as he did with his bachata version of Ben E. King’s classic “Stand By Me.” He also has pan-American appeal as he uses diverse Latin influences, including the sounds of the Mexican ranchera, in his songs.

“I try to reach every-body in Latin culture,” Royce says. “I try to add different sounds to cater to everybody and give ev-erybody something to try to explore.”

He’s diving all the way into the English-speaking market in the next year or so with an English-lan-guage album from RCA.

“It’s definitely a chal-lenge for me. It’s a whole new ballgame,” Royce says. “Myself, I grew up listening to R&B, so we’ll have pop, a little Spanish and a little bit of Latin rhythms, but most of it will be in English with a Latin flavor.”

If you’ve been to the Read-ing Terminal Market re-cently, chances are you’ve noticed Meltkraft, slinger of specialty grilled cheese sandwiches. Yes, that’s the place that sells the version with brisket and mac ’n’ cheese between the bread. Chef Rebecca Foxman is the one responsible for the recipes — everything from the crazy concoc-tions to the mellow flavor combos. We spoke with her about the shop, the market and where she finds comfort food.

You guys have been open since January. How’s the fi rst year going so far?

Great, better than expected! It’s been a lot of fun getting to know the area and the crowd, the regulars. We’ve been accepted pretty quickly, and we’re excited.

What’s it like to have a spot in Reading Terminal Market compared to one that stands alone? The traffic that comes through is extremely heavy at times. Having an open stand is different than a storefront and door. There are a lot of people walking by, and they can see everything that we sell, and I like that aspect.

Have you become buddies with the other business owners there?Oh yeah. Everyone here helps each other. If we run out of something or

we need some last-min-ute produce, there’s a place to get it. And we’ll return the favor and help restaurants in the building. The Amish and Mennonite communities are wonderful, too.

What is your most popular menu item? The Valley Thunder grilled cheese. By far, that one sells the most.

Grilled cheese is a great comfort food. Where do you go in Philly when you’re craving comfort?I’m a huge fan of au-thentic Asian food. I go to Rangoon a lot, and I enjoy Banana Leaf. I like Jewish concept food a lot, too. I love things that are spicy, heavy and fishy. For drinks I like the bloody mary at Oyster House. Or I’ll go to Monk’s or Percy Street Barbecue for beer — they have an unbeliev-able can beer list. But really, I just love a good bloody mary.

Hot chef. Rebecca Foxman is a grilled cheese expert.

the terrorist Brothers Tsarnaev the “Balto Syndrome.” Like the half-dog, half-wolf hero in the Steven Spielberg movie, the person doesn’t know which one he is. Then some existential crisis or whatever occurs, and the person comes down too heavily on one side to make up for the years of inaction. Repossession? Bad/No Credit? We secure financing for ANY credit need!

The Phillies enjoyed a much-deserved off-day Thursday. Well, most of them did as Chase Utley awaited MRI results.

The team is back in ac-tion Friday night in our nation’s capital against the rival Nationals. The Phillies will throw out surprising star right-hander Kyle Kendrick in the opener of an impor-tant three-game set.

Kendrick has been a revelation this season, going 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA. He has 41 strikeouts against just 14 walks.

Kendrick, long known for his inconsistency, seems to have found his groove after seven sea-sons in Philadelphia. He was tied for the team lead in victories before Cliff Lee picked up his fifth win Wednesday night.

So what’s been the biggest change?

“People have gotten on me about being incon-sistent,” Kendrick told reporters earlier this sea-son. “I’ve had five good games and then three bad, so I’m trying to just be consistent every time out. Be me, be different.”

Consistency — and adding a dangerous changeup as his second-ary pitch.

“[Earlier in my career], I didn’t want to throw it,” Kendrick said. “Now I’ll throw it [changeup] any count.”

If Kendrick can pro-vide another consistent outing for the Phils, they’ll have a great shot at getting to the .500 mark, at 24-24. A win would tie them with the Nationals for second place in the NL East.

“I think we can beat them [Washington],” Lee said after Wednesday’s win. “If we execute and do what we can do, we can beat anyone.”

MLB. Right-hander Kyle Kendrick gets the call in the team’s series opener in Washington, D.C.

Extra bases

The Phillies made a minor

roster move and provided

an update on their newest

pitcher on their off -day.

• Michael Stutes is back in the bullpen, some 13 months after recording his last out. The Phils recalled the reliever from the mi-nors and optioned the struggling Phillippe Aumont.

• Carlos Zambrano threw an extended spring training game in Florida. He allowed one run (unearned) in four innings, while striking out four.

• The Phillies have partnered with the city’s tourism board for the “Celebrate Tourism Event” on Tuesday. The Phanatic will dress in Colonial garb and march around Old City. Phillies tickets will be on sale to visitors at the Independence Visitor Center. MICHAEL

In the lax of luxury The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship is tak-ing over Lincoln Financial Field this weekend. Duke will play Cornell Saturday (2:30 p.m.), while Syracuse takes on Denver Saturday (5 p.m.) in the Final Four. The title game is slated for Monday (1 p.m.). The women will hold their lacrosse championship over at Villanova Stadium, with the title game being played Sunday. / GETTY IMAGES

As the season wound down, Jrue Holiday took some time to reflect.

Holiday earned his first All-Star berth and as-sumed a leadership role. He elevated his game and literally carried the Sixers for much of the season. But he also watched his team struggle as center Andrew Bynum never was able to suit up.

Coach Doug Collins eventually resigned after

his third season. Still, the ever-improving 22-year-old chose to look at the future in a positive way.

“I’m a humble per-son and I was raised that way,” Holiday said recent-

ly. “I think it’s important to be that way. I don’t get cocky ever. Am I a confi-dent player? Of course.”

Holiday will be busy off the court, too. He will marry girlfriend, Lauren Cheney, a standout soc-cer player for the United States Women’s National Team, in July.

“She’s a great player, and I don’t know how she does it with all that running and the training that goes into it,” Holi-day said. “It’s going to be a great, great day and I’ll get to enjoy it with my family and friends.”

NBA. The point guard has a busy off season ahead — on and off the basketball court.
