No Work and All Play?1417/03/2013, Berlin, Germany

From 14th to 17th of March youth workers from all over Europe participated in an internationalseminar about youth unemployment in order to develop strategies against a problem that concernsevery European citizen. 26 young people from 11 different EU-member countries which are active onlocal level in their different organizations met in Berlin, exchanged ideas and connected during theDBYN seminar "No work and all play". The participants came from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic,Germany, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and the UK. The program did not only focus onthe theoretical background of the growing youth unemployment in Europe and different EU

programs (such as Erasmus for all, Youth on the move, Youth opportunity initiative and Youthguarantee) but also included sightseeing in the capital of Germany and an intercultural evening. Therewas a special reason why the seminar took place in the "Don Bosco Zentrum" in Berlin since theunique venue is also an interesting example of a modern project that is working with young longtimeunemployed people. Therefore the center called "Manege" was the ideal place for the training courseas we had the possibility to get to know the way they try to deal with the situation youth is facing inEurope nowadays. The 3 days seminar also gave us the feeling of being well connected so that we goback to our countries with new motivation and ideas for being active.

Which actions do you want to integrate in your homeorganisation?

I think the Youth pass book would be a great idea since a lot of teenagers come to the centreand participate in many activities in which one can grow and learn new skills and having such abook will help them keep record of what the have learnt through out the live in or activity.

training for unemployed youth and training for a guidance volunteer that could lead toemployment.

We would like to have a Youthpass Book

The action on the strategies to be used to train the young staff to work ... Joeri and I developed an idea about a personal evaluation booklet. I think it's possible to

implement it in the organisation because those ideas are already known in the organisation.

promove live abroad and also study. it is not very common between young people. sometimesthe money is a problem, for than I hope my home organization know how to help them andmake several programs to make education and opportunities.

Youthpassbook After all, in the Aktionszentrum in Benediktbeuern we are rather working with students and not

with young unemployed people. But I think it is important to combine it. Most students, who arecoming here, have a lower educational level. During the time they are here, we have leisure timeworkshops (such as creativity, climbing and other sport activities). So this is also part ofempowering. I think the exchange market was very interesting, because some of our new

voluteers are going to join some of the summercamps. Since I currently have a work experiencein the Aktionszentrum, I will be able to arrange some of those things we were talking about. I willjoin the European Youth Week and think about arranging the children parliament.

The people who were sent from my national organisation agreed on discuss this in the nearfuture more exactly and to take further actions afterwards.

"Actually the action we developed already exists in one Don Bosco project, called Don BoscoFlchtlingswerk (Projekt Moses). So we are not able integrate it in our organisation.

But we, the participants and the organisation are going to come together to speak about theseminar, and plan how we can implement our experiences and gained competences in Austria."

Where there topics raised during the seminar, which you wouldlike to see addressed during future seminars?

Reasons for youth unemployment more detailed discussed. "The lack of connection to the work of Don Bosco or the church as a whole. I don't think it was

explained why we as Salesian organisation were concentrating on youth unemploymentspecifically. A little background knowledge about the history of Don Bosco teaching the boys heworkerd with life skills and trade skills would have been beneficial to see why it is a part of whowe are as Salesians to aid the reduction of unemployment.

lso when we arrived there was no-one to welcome us so we were a little lost at first about whatto do and where to go.

" "how to combat the risk of default in youth? in which fields can be taken to an economic development to employ young people in the

    Mediterranean countries?"

The EU-Policies concerning youth unemployment could be mentioned so that people who havenot taken part in this seminar are also aware of them.

More about opportites for jobs in Youth Work world wide business psychology, youth rainsingOther comments :-) "Apart from the above I had an amzaing time. I have taken information away that we can

hopefully build on within our organisation. It was good to have debates and conversations as amain group, good to hear other people/organisations point of view.

Thank you for a great time :-)" "For me there seemed to be a lack of Salesianity. Nothing that we looked at was linked back to

the Salesian ethos or Don Bosco, even through it seemed to fit into the Salesian way of workingperfectly.

Also there was a lack of prayer or link to religion. Over all the seminar was great and very relevant. It linked well with the current realities of

    young people today."

"The programme was very interesting but if we really work on it during 1,5 day there is no pointof coming for 4 days (on thursday we have not really do anything connected to the programme).

Thank you!" Im doubting if everyone took something from the seminar. There were many different startingpositions and I dont know if everyone keeps a lot of ideas in mind. But I also realize that it is

really difficult to do justice to everyone.

I would have liked to get a better theoretical input concerning the question of youthunemployment. It would had been very interesting to invite a politician as aspecial guest or anyother expert in this topic.

I think that overall this was a great seminar, it was well balanced. We had the opportunity tolearn but also to create new friendships and bonds, on both personal and inter-organizationallevels.

A social room other than the work room may have been more comfortable for after meals. Thanks for great and useful weekend. My problem with the food was only one: I need bread (white bread) and natural water to eat,

but in general, it was very good.

Im really glad that I got the possibility of taking part in the seminar. I also think that the selectionof issues is always good and important for the EU. It was also a good idea to choose the settingof Don Bosco Zentrum since this is a modern example of our issue.

Thanks to the trainers!! :) Speaking was too fast and I didn't understand all; but I liked the meeting so I could meet fantastic

    people
