This is an introduction to the topic of 'digital history' intended to provide a framework for discussion at the digital history workshop that was held on 7 January 2013 at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts & Sciences).
I focus mostly on issues affecting historical research, and not on the changing nature of academic publishing. As far as research is concerned this paper argues that two main issues need to be addressed with regard to doing history in the digital age: 1) the further development of a digital source criticism; 2) education of current and future historians, if the full potential of new technologies is to be realised. Both issues are hardly new but perhaps more urgent than ever. More broadly speaking I will argue that these issues should be seen in the context of a tendency in digital humanities towards technological determinism that needs to be balanced with more attention to methodological and epistemological considerations.
