Season Preview
Changes are abundant for the Wilmington College
volleyball team, and it starts at the top as Beth Floyd
assumes the controls of the program.
Floyd is also the school’s assistant athletic director and soft-
ball coach.
“We are looking forward to an exciting season,” said Floyd.
“Our young ladies are dedicated to getting better everyday,
and will play with passion. Volleyball is a great team sport
and we have great team chemistry.”
The Quakers are replacing forty percent of their roster, los-
ing four starters in the process, off a team that went 6-19
a season ago. Most of the team’s offense has graduated as
Anne Kennan, Sarah Fisher and Caity Massie combined for
418 of the team’s 660 kills.
Junior Ashley Miller, who spent time as the team’s setter, re-
turns back to her natural middle hitter position. She finished
with 113 kills and a team-high 291 assists and 23 service aces.
She added 22 blocks and was second on the team with 193
digs.
“Ashley is the consummate team player, and we are looking
forward to her having a big year for us,” said Floyd. “She is
one of the most athletic players on the roster, and we will
put her in the right positions to be successful.”
Juniors Natalie Sparks and Emily Regan also return to bolster
the WC lineup. Sparks finished the season with 89 kills, while
Regan added 124 digs. Senior Molly Hirtzinger will also see
some time along the front row.
The return of sophomores Tabby Biegler and Courtney Hur-
ley, both of whom missed the entire season with injuries, will
help give Floyd some athleticism and depth.
“Tabby brings a certain attitude to the court, and we cer-
tainly missed it last season,” said Floyd. “We are pleased to
have her back on the court.
“Courtney has battled injuries throughout her WC career,
and we are really excited to see what she will bring to us on
the court,” said Floyd.
Ashley Miller (left) and Natalie Sparks will be key components to the Wilmington offense this season.

Beth Floyd will be in her first season as the head coach of the Wilmington College volleyball team. Floyd is also the head softball coach and the senior woman administrator for the Fightin’ Quakers.
An excellent recruiter, Floyd turned around a struggling softball program and plans to do the same with volleyball.
Floyd assists the administration of Wilmington’s 20 intercollegiate teams and oversees game management and NCAA compliance.
She is the school’s winningest fastpitch softball coach. The team has increased its win total in each of the last four seasons, including a school-record 20 in 2013.

With seven victories, the volleyball team had to find a way to overcome some adverse situations. Midway through the season, head coach Jan Tobe was forced to step away for health related issues. Still a team led by its three seniors, Anne Keenan, Sara Fisher and Caity Massie, soldiered on.
“Anne, Sara, and Caity have all been impact players throughout their four years with us,” said interim head coach Jill West. “I could always count on one of them to step up when the team needed them to. Their shoes will be hard to fill but they have already inspired the younger girls to step up and take their places.” Unfortunately, they couldn’t quite get over OAC hump and finished winless in the conference season. The development of several players, including sophomore Ashley Miller and freshman Ariana Neff, gives the Lady Quakers some building blocks. “This year we had a very young team,” said West. “It was all about building our team for the future. The young girls stepped up because of the leadership from our seniors and I look forward to great things happening next year.” Four volleyball players – Fisher, Keenan, sophomore Emily Regan and sophomore Natalie Sparks – earned academic recog-nition.

Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and ill-nesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals.
In 2005, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the pro-fessional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.
WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPAll students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.
ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPSWC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the Cincin-nati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Crew, Dayton Dragons, Dayton Sports Medicine Institute and many area clinics and high schools.
NATION PROGRAM RECOGNITIONWilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the na-tional certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College
embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and phi-
losophies, and promotes in its program and activities such
values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace
and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college
also values international cultures and facilitates courses in
global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-
term study-abroad and touring opportunities.
While Wilmington offers such popular majors as edu-
cation, business administration, biology, criminal justice,
sports management, social work and pre-professional,
some of its more unique academic areas are the highly
acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/
sports medicine program, which are considered among the
best in the nation.
Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numer-
ous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from
fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music
and drama, publications, student government and service
learning.
Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs
designed especially for college students, as well as those
open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed
annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which
has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative
and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse
American and international cultures.
Much has changed at Wilmington College since
students gained national fame for building a dormitory
in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141-year
history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington
College experience.
Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as
they engage in careers or further their education in
today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them
a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the
liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individu-
als able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts,
sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also
realize that service to others is often an important road to
self-realization.
Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared
students to make a living, make a life and make a differ-
ence.

Why We Play Division III Athletics
It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from
heart.
We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus
class that we don’t even know.
We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent.
We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor.
We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO.
It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand.
Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know
more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first.
We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school ap-plications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions.
When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans.
But the hurt is still the same.
We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that
class we are nothing more than students.
It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we
walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud
of ourselves.
We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
