TAKE CARE During the course of the afternoon there are lots of attractions, things to see, things to do and lots of people moving around. Please do take care and keep an eye on young children.
THE LIONS CLUB OF ILMINSTER & DISTRICT CAN ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER
THE SUMMER FETE
Thanks to everyone in the Ilminster Community for their generous support that enabled us to present a cheque for £3,500 for the Beacon Centre in Taunton, my chosen charity.
I hope you enjoy this year’s Summer Fete and spend lots of money which as ever we will use to help others in our community.
Our Incoming Club President Roger Taylor has chosen Prostate Cancer Research as his charity for 2013-2014 and I hope he will be able to raise a large sum for this very worthwhile cause.

MEET THE CLUBS NEWEST & FIRST FEMALE MEMBERS
Rosemary and Angela became members of Ilminster Lions club earlier this year and are looking
forward to their involvement in this year’s summer fete.
Rosemary Jackson says “Its nice working with like minded friendly peo-ple who want to help others, by raising money for good causes. Its nice to get out and about meeting with the public who always seem to sup-port the lions in whatever they are collecting for.” Angela Clapp says “I have lived in Ilminster most of my life and over the years have seen the good work done in the community by the Lions. I decided I would like to be a part of that in putting something back into the community. Since joining the Lions I have found every-body to be very friendly in working together as a team for the benefit of the community. The other members are very welcoming and I have very much enjoyed both the fundraising and the social aspect of the club.” Both Rosemary and Angela are hoping to be at the fete and helping to man the membership area along with Dave Case the club membership secretary.

ILMINSTER LIONS SUMMER FETE
This year we are trying something new with the entertainment ,
refreshments and various charity and commercial stalls located in the
main school building. There will also be things happening outside on the
playing field. Something for all the family.
As ever we are indebted to the local business community, many of whom
have placed adverts in our programme. Also thanks to Swanmead school
for the use of their facilities.
Our Summer Fete is one of our major fund raising events during the year
and through your generosity we are able to help others. We hope you and
your family have a most enjoyable day.

Vaughan Lee House, The Residential Care Home built by the Community would like to introduce our new Manager, Mrs Stella Fuszard.
Stella officially took up her post on 23rd January 2013 and she is looking forward to developing her Community contacts to ensure that Vaughan Lee is meeting the needs of our elderly community and their families if and when you need us. Stella has quite an extensive background from within the Care Industry and has plenty of experience so she was considered the ideal candidate for the job! If Stella looks familiar to you it’s because she has been the Deputy Manager of Vaughan Lee House for the past 7 years. She understands the Care Industry, the needs of our Elderly Community and she embraces the ethos of Vaughan Lee House and how important we are to the local Community of Ilminster & District. The Committee of Management of Vaughan Lee would like to take this opportunity to thank the various organisations and our Friends of Vaughan Lee volunteers who continually help Vaughan Lee House to achieve our Commitment to the Community. The Lions Club is a big supporter and we thank you for all you do for us and other worthy causes around the district. If you would like information on our services or how you could get involved with Vaughan Lee, please contact Stella Fuszard on 01460 52077

ILMINSTER LIONS IN THE COMMUNITY
The Summer Fete is Ilminster Lions largest and usually biggest fund raising event of the year, closely followed by the Charity 10k. Other smaller events throughout the year generate extra funds. . All of these create a public face for the club. In a year upwards of £15,000 may be donated to individuals or groups. Sometimes we have a major project to make a large donation, like to the Beacon Centre Taunton, but more often than not funds are spent on smaller local things. The majority of cases are never reported. Sometimes donations to a school, to a community event, like the Christmas lights make the newspa-pers, but never a personal story. Behind the scenes a lot of other things go on. Our Community Services team are very active in the community, acting as the eyes and ears for the club and investigating requests for help. Many Lions Club members are active in the community in their own way. Amongst other things, helping disabled people, involvement in organising the Ilminster Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch, collecting unwanted spectacles for sending to third world countries, managing the very successful Message in a Bottle to name but a few. Basically members can get involved in things as much or as little as they like. A specific example is one member who is also a member of Yeovil Freewheelers EVS (Emergency Voluntary Service). A registered charity operat-ing in South Somerset to provide an out-of-hours unique free courier service between hospitals and patients in their homes. The charity operates a fleet of three motorcycles to carry urgently needed medical items such as blood, bio-logical samples, medical notes, x-rays and medicines. The service costs ap-proximately £25,000 a year to run and is provided free of charge, all members are unpaid volunteers. Saving Yeovil Hospital a minimum of £65,000 - £70,000 per year. A figure based on the cost of using local taxis to provide a similar ser-vice which would be even higher if the hospital were to run their own service with NHS personnel and vehicles Ilminster Lions appreciate the tremendous support they get from the local community and the willingness of local people to help others through the Lions . Many club members have joined the club as a way of putting something back into the community. We remain on the outlook for new members, male of female. If Lions is something you feel you could be interested in then please telephone 0845 8339936 to find out a bit more.

We hope you have enjoyed the Summer Fete. Every Lion member has been involved in putting the show on and it shows what the club is capable of. However we continue to be looking for new members, male and female Ilminster Lions has been going nearly 37 years and we are made up of local people of all ages from the town and surrounding villages. The Lions club are a completely non-profit organisation, with every penny any Lion raises going to well deserving causes. Being a Lion, as well as hard work, is extremely rewarding, but seeing the satisfaction on peoples faces when you are able to help is amazing. The Ilminster Lions meet twice a month at a nearby hostelry where occasionally the odd pint of beer is consumed but the emphasis is on fundraising for local, national and international communities. Although the meetings entail discussing the projects we are assisting, we do promote a very healthy social diary and you can guarantee you will be made very welcome. If becoming a member is of interest or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me at the Fete or Phone 0845 8339936. Dave Case Membership Chairman
