Spring 2013 Palouse Habitat for Humanity Palouse HFH Completes 12th Home! [email protected]palousehabitat.org 208.883.8502 PO Box 3054 Moscow, ID 83843 On Sunday, March 17th, Palouse Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of the Purnell home with family, volunteers, friends and supporters. Since the wall-raising ceremony last spring, volunteers spent over 4000 hours building the home. Cori and Ken Purnell put in 500 of those hours to meet their sweat equity requirement for a Habitat home. “I still have splinters” commented Ken during the dedication. Palouse HFH Board President Doug Arlt welcomed the group crowded into the Purnell’s livingroom and introduced volun- teers and board members. Simpson United Methodist Church Pastor Todd Scranton offered an opening prayer and a blessing for the home, asking that it be a place of secu- rity, rest, and support for the Purnell fam- ily. Construction Committee Chair Brent Bradberry and Safety Officer Dave Ostrom shared their bittersweet experience with this home build. It is always a joy to complete a home, but, due to illness, this build was finished without a critial member of our Habitat family, Ken Hall, our Construction Supervisor. The Codger Crew, the Purnells, contractors including EDA Electric and Don’s Plumbing rallied to finish the home by our March deadline. Special housewarming gifts were pre- sented to the Purnells from several local groups. Palouse Patchers, a local quilting club, presented each of the Purnell family members with a personalized hand-made quilt. Cougar Kids from Building Blocks Day School in Pullman shared orignial art- work, the PEO AB Chapter of Moscow provided a basket of educational toys and books for Addy, Skyler and Hayden to enjoy, and Family Support Committee Chair Katie Watts presented the Purnells with a Bible. Final exterior landscaping and paint- ing is scheduled for Saturday April 20th with volunteers from Real Life on the Palouse. You can see photos from the dedication on Facebook and a link to the KLEW TV interview on our website, www.palousehabitat.org. Many, many thanks to everyone who helped make the Purnell dream of home ownership come true! Katie Watts presenting the Purnells with a Bible.

In Memory: Ken HallPalouse HFH Construction Supervisor
Ken Hall, Palouse Habitat for Humanity Construction Supervisor, died at his home on Sunday, March 17, 2013 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 67. When Ken began work on the Mitzimberg home in Palouse, Wash-ington, we quickly realized what an amazing resource he was. Ken brought a unique combination of skills to the build site - years of construction expertise coupled with the heart of a teacher. He worked well with volunteers, no matter their level of experience; he under-stood that Habitat is as much about building community as about building houses. Ken enjoyed working with our Habitat partner fami-lies and personalized the homes inside and out as much as possible within the Habitat construction guidelines and budget. Ken played a central role in our partnership with the WSU Interior Design program. For the past three years, Ken and WSU Professor Bob Krikac trained the fall semester design students on the build site, giving them a unique opportunity for hands-on construction experi-ence. In the spring, Ken and others from Palouse HFH met several times to guide the students as they designed homes to Habitat specifi-cations. Ideas from some of these student designs have been incorpo-rated into the past two Palouse Habitat home builds. He was also an active member of the Palouse Habitat Surplus Sale committee. Thanks in large part to his vision, enthusiasm, and ability to persuade his wife, Connie, to get involved, Palouse Habitat opened the Surplus Sale last fall at 304 N. Main Street in Moscow. Connie became the Surplus Sale Coordinator, managing volunteers and the

office. Ken and the Codger Crew volun-teers renovated the warehouse space, and when the Surplus Sale opened in Novem-ber, Ken managed the warehouse side of the Sale, accepting donations and prepar-ing them for the sale floor. The Surplus Sale is now open two days a week, and we’re seeing a steady increase in donations, volunteers to run the sale, and shoppers looking for bargains. We hope the Surplus Sale will become a de-pendable source of funds to build Habitat homes, as well as a community resource, providing a way to recycle construction materials, leftover home renovation or décor items, and an alternative source of affordable materials for home repair and remodel projects. Ken was an active community ser-vant and a much loved husband, father and friend. His loss is felt deeply by the Palouse Habitat family. A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, April 6th at 1:00 at First United Methodist Church, 322 East Third Street in Moscow. The community is welcome to attend. Shorts Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrange-ments. Online condolances may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net. The family has asked that memorial gifts be made to First United Methodist Church or Palouse Habitat for Humanity.
