A Semantic Approach to Digital Art History:
The Chen Cheng-po Project
Sophy Shu-Jiun ChenAcademia Sinica Digital Center
Research Center for Information Technology Innovation, Academia Sinica
PNC 2013 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings, December 10-12, 2013, Kyoto University
The initial idea of the project is to showcase the application of controlled vocabularies, especially when Academia Sinica has richly invested in the Chinese version of the AAT (Art & Architecture Thesaurus)
Equivalence Relationships
Hierarchical Relationships
Associative Relationships
Academia Sinica received the archival collection of Chen Cheng Po (1895-1947), a famous modern painter in Taiwan
From Digital Archives to Digital Art History
• How and in what ways can digital techniques offer fundamentally innovative or useful insights to the discipline of art history?
• Research Projects of Digital Art History– Getty & Málaga Univ.’s Digital Mellini (U.S. & Spain)– The ARTL@S Project (France)– Lev Manovich’s “Software Studies Initiative” project
• Apply semantic relations and linked data method, focusing on a character’s works of arts and related persons, periods of time, events, places, and objects.
• By build a stronger connection and contextualization between a character-based digital data and its related data, this approach will enable humanities scholars to discover more information which they did not see in the past, and develop new research methods or findings.
• Selected Research Questions of digital art history in this case might be as follows.– Examine Chen Chengpo and related people’s involvement of art movement in Chia-yi
from Chen’s correspondences and regional historical archive of Chia-yi. – Trace the origin of Chia-yi’s ancient name “Hua Dou (the City of Paintings)” from
newspapers of the Japanese colonial period and records of exhibition (Taiwan Fine Art Exhibition).
– Explore the correlation of contemporary Taiwan visual design and Taiwanese art history image with keywords of Chen Chengpo’s artworks.
Demonstrate the Art History Applications of the Controlled Vocabularies
• Create various kinds of metadata records and authority files– 47 metadata of Chen’s paintings (DC, CONA & others) – 25 artists’ authority files (ULAN, RDA group 2, FOAF & others) detailing
Chen’s biography & relationships to other artists– 109 events related to Chen (schema.org)– 29 Geographic Names (TGN, schema.org & others) related to Chen’s
paintings– 7 timelines (Chen’s timeline, Taiwan Modern Art, Japanese Modern Art, Chinese Modern Art, European Modern Art, Taiwan Modern History, World History)

Further Work• Develop cultural heritage ontology to serve as metadata and the upper
level semantic model. – Extending EDM(Europeana Data Model)– move data into linked open data cloud to enrich information about the items
of the collections.• Link to external sources
– Find the links from the metadata to other repositories, such as Dbpeida, VIAF (The Virtual International Authority File) or GeoNames.
• Identify functional requirements of digital art history system– Information Behavior of Art historians / curators
• Create compelling applications, for instance, a relationship finder application that allows Academia Sinica Digital Center to develop curated experiences, linking artworks and other concepts to present a guided story.
