Page 6: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

2013 is our year of optimism and dreams. We are happy to see the continuation of our grand plan for designing in performance and inspiring others through our passion for the sport. This year will be the first season where the new Carbon 170 Slalom boom will be fully available. Now, one can retrofit the170 Slalom tail piece part to the wave boom arms, and conversion between wave and slalom use is now possible in both the 140 and 170 dimensions. Continued changes to the adjustment parts have eliminated the corrosion that caused failures. The new grip material and design reduces seams and increases durability and the feel of the boom in the hands is exceptionally comfortable.

The mast program continues with constant evaluation and testing for consistency and durability. Our manufacturer does the high demand bend testing before shipment to help us eliminate failures on first rigging. Modified mandrel shapes and increased material content have improved every mast type and our durability improvements are lowering overall warranty levels..

We found the Blaze, our narrow sleeve cam freerace design to be well received by sailors seeking the easy waterstarting solution in this sail type, and for those looking at wider sleeves, the Titan GS continues to follow the evolution of the TR Racing sails, another step up in the performance of two cam race sails for FE. More work on the remarkable Ghost XT, the trusty

Legend, and universal Global wave sails continues to produce wider range and soft manageable power. Art Szpunar’s dream sail for the most radical wave styles is the new Mutant, with four battens and a super short luff. His daily experience in hard core wave riding drives the development of these great wave tools and everyone who uses them always finds the refinement and balance of shape and tension.

Taty Frans pushes the Loco to freestyle heights. Subtle outline changes and tension adjustments bring the twist into balance with the increased low end power and this allows wild flying maneuvers and the rapid redirection necessary to plane

through maneuvers. Taty’s feedback is invaluable to direct the authentic freestyle characteristics necessary to perform in the top ranking of the world’s competitors.

The flagship TR-9 and TR-9XT high performance racing ranges remain the same outline but have undergone significant shape and tension adjustments in the relatively new form. We were very pleased with obvious speed in the TR-8s and great results from both Micah Buzianis, Taty and other racers around the world, came with striking episodes of speed on the course and event wins leading to third place overall in the PWA. Now the TR-9 and TR-9 XT can be expected to produce even better results than before.

We have been nurturing the idea of MauiSails, (and it is an idea as much as anything else), for thirty-four years now. There is always the stress of economies, the challenges of design, production, and delivery, and the other worldly limitations. But the day-to-day reality of working with the good people who make up our dedicated crew, the satisfaction of gathering like-minded sailors who appreciate our commitment to the feel and performance, makes it all so worthwhile. MauiSails is about making it good before anything else, and bringing the hours of that good feeling to as many people as possible.

Congratulations to any other sailors who have been in local competition who have been successful with MauiSails. We would love to know more about this and will continue to maintain our wide open Website Forum and Facebook presence so we can all communicate and be part of what MauiSails is becoming in 2013.

LEGENDSIDE SHORE WAVE

Page 11: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

The Legend remains our flagship sides-shore wave sail. After lowering the aspect ratio last year, a full season of daily testing focused on size-by-size fine tuning of the Legend designs. The result is a perfectly balanced, meticulously refined machine.

The moderately forward oriented draft eases transitions perfectly from driving bottom turns to correctly neutral when coming off the top. The excellent combination of balanced power and incredible high end control optimizes the smooth, light handling even in the most gnarly, gusty, offshore conditions. The Legend’s great control expands its popularity from side shore wave conditions to super high wind areas like the Gorge or Pozo, where overpowered handling is key.

New for 2013The extensive use of exclusive MauiSails™ light weight gradient X-Ply™ in the upper sail body. This custom material has excellent strength to weight properties and produces an original gradient effect that ties in with new bright colors to make the Legend stand out on the water like never before. This material is the result of several years of development and long term testing of our special Small Yarn Light Film laminate type. Two custom weights of Visual X-Ply in the window area match their loads for perfect tension.

MUTANTFOUR BATTENS WAVE

Page 13: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

The Mutant is our newest and most progressive wave sail.It stretches any conventional thinking with an ultra-low aspect ratio and wind range unheard of in four-batten sails of any kind. The Mutant combines soft, light handling and playful maneuverability with balanced power and stability.

The shaping and body tension of the sail have been conceived to match the short outline which keeps the sail composed in a huge range of conditions. The Mutant planes on a size smaller than normal, while remaining light and in control on the top end. The reduced rotational inertia of the ultra-compact outline and the ability to use a smaller size drives the insane maneuverability and facilitates looping and modern wave maneuvers. Sizes from 3.8 to 5.1 fit on a 370 mast or alternately the 3.8 and 4.2 also perform on a 340. The largest 5.6 size requires a 400.

Layout & constructionThe Mutant’s layout and construction is based on using the best materials for light weight and durability. Generous use of ultra-light and strong Technora™ scrim in the upper sail body, bomber 5-mil X-Ply™ along the leech and foot, and an oversize optical X-Ply™ window in two custom thicknesses all add to the durability and value. The name and graphics of the Mutant are inspired by the idea the sail should feel so light and natural it is like an evolved wing that is actually part of you.

Our highly successful, ultra-light GhostXT returns for a fourth season, lighter than ever.Increased use of Technora™, strategic trimming of patches, reduction in the number of seams, and attention to small

details of finish all reduced the weight. Durability has been 100% maintained with ODL04 Technora™ now proving its worth through seasons of use. The GhostXT is leaner and meaner than ever. After many requests we also added a 4.2 design to the GhostXT range.

Fine tuned on a parallel path to the Legend but adapted to the ultra-light laminate scrim materials, the Ghosts incredible “barely there” handling, perfect balance and stability are the ultimate in wave performance.COLOR

The Global is all about maximum power with shape and skin tension optimized for onshore and side-onshore conditions.

The Global’s solid stability and powerful acceleration help to make the most of whatever conditions your local spot throws at you, helping you to stay upwind and punch out through rough whitewater. We maintained full power and improved the handling by reducing boom length slightly and moderately raising the foot, making it an even more versatile performer. This year, the Global also features extensive use of our new Small Yarn Light Film color gradient x-ply and a third color in the expressive graphic.

Only a Master Trickster can truly define the tools needed to do the wild and crazy stuff.

Working closely with Taty Frans on the Locos is a happy cooperation. We experiment based on his recommendations, and then depend on his feedback to keep the sails on the cutting edge of the rapidly evolving freestyle discipline. Freestyle may be the greatest design challenge of them all because the demands on the sails to do more and more specific tricks are defining the outcome of project, but the result is worth the work.

The Locos instant acceleration, light handling and reactivity encourage you to try new stuff. Returning to the use of more film material in the upper sail body has been a request of the riders looking for the absolute in crisp, reactive rigs. Added colors fit with the radical performances and attract the spectator’s eye.

As long as it doesn’t involve waves or shore-break, the Switch is the most ideal for a dose of everything.

Like to go fast? The Switch was race bred for speed and power in PWA Super-X. Want to do some tricks? No worries… Switch loves to Spock and loop and spin around. And jumping? Look out you’ve gone too high! An interesting combination of shaping factors define the form as good for speed while the relatively short boom makes the handling in manoeuvres cruisey and smooth. Small yarn light film laminates and and generous use of X-Ply™ build in the durability and function. Tube/Rod battens through the power sections hold the draft solid and give the boost to get to top speed and stay in charge for blasting fun.

BLAZEFreerace narrow sleeve TWO OR THREE camS

Page 27: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

The Blaze for 2013 is our successful two and three cam narrow sleeve design range. The conservative clew cutaway and shape/tension relationships developed in synch with our successful TR-8 racing program are blended with the minimal conical sleeve that was requested. Smooth feathering rotation and racing performance are excellent for Formula Experience and simply going fast.

The smooth twist character requires only moderate downhaul to achieve the correct setting and this makes for a soft feel and easy maneuvering.

The use of X-Ply adds to the performance value and a graphic look easily recognized from far offshore. Four light weight tube/rod battens support general shape stability and tensioning system keeps the trailing edge tension correct, tack to tack.

The conical sleeve never holds water and makes recovery and waterstarts easy. Lightweight and durable, the tough anti-chafe material protects the sleeve and tack area from damage. COLOR

The 2013 Blaze is going to be the favorite go-to sail for anyone wanting the combo of lighter weight, 75% SRS Carbon mast compatibility, and minimal sleeve dimension slalom performance. After driving through a couple of sweet easy jibes with RAF style rotation, the Blaze will certainly keep the fire lit.

Page 28: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

TITANGS

Freerace WIDE sleeve TWO OR THREE camS

Page 29: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

The 2013 Titan-GS takes after its big brother, the TR-9.Based on the successful aspect ratio alterations and subsequent shaping adjustments of the TR program, Titan-GS is evolving to be the perfect sail for fast free riding and Formula Experience racing. The lower aspect ratio and slightly wider sleeve with more lightweight XPly ensures the best application of extra cam pressure to stabilize draft. The continued use of flexible materials also makes the rotation soft and easy.

The desirable handling character and fluid maneuvering is a design trait from MauiSails that is already well known. Formula Experience racers find the new slightly flatter profile aloft matches perfectly with the deeper sections around the boom for acceleration and top speed control. Refined adjustments to leech seams respond to the moderate downhaul that results in the correct setting of the twist.

The increased use of X-Ply materials, including our custom gradient 3mil, creates a color shifting palette for a most attractive appearance. Tensioning the battens via our custom end fittings smoothes the trailing edge on both tacks evenly and the four tube/rod battens guarantee shape stability and light weight.COLOR

COMBOS

6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.5 | 8.0 | 8.5 | 9.0 | 9.5 | 10.0 | 11.0The sleeve design always drains water quickly. Recovery and water-starts after falls is simple because of the minimal sleeve. It is only as large as necessary to rig with cams off. The greatest effort has gone into having rotation to jibe like an RAF, so you will forget there are cams.

Sleeve and tack area are protected from damage by a lightweight covering and the deep cutout is perfect for easily attaching the boom, especially when using the MauiSails custom carbon front end design. We recommend the use of an adjustable outhaul and include an integrated lightweight loop-on clew pulley as the low friction solution for full race capability.

The 2013 Titan-GS is the ideal sail for easy Freerace sailing, with manageable power and competition speed.

TR Racing Slalom fw

Page 31: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

The outline geometries and aspect ratios have been adjusted on a size-by-size basis to ensure optimum balance and tension throughout the range. During season 2012 we heard great things about the TR-8s, and have evidenced the same in local racing conditions at the highest level. The speed is obvious and even with our PWA Team guys outnumbered, there have been great results. The flashes of what is possible and the full summer to test and develop have brought us to creating the TR-9 and TR-9 XT, which are certainly our fastest and easy handling version of the concepts yet.

Watching relative lightweight Taty Frans take on the biggest guys and be speed competitive, not to mention schooling them with his

wicked inside jibes, reinforced our commitment to make sailing ease and smoothness a top design priority. On the other end of the spectrum, Micah Buzianis, 30% heavier and proportionally as strong, found success and the speed to improve his ranking. His adjustment to our different shaping style and performance characteristics has been easy for us all. Concentrated testing with Phil McGain, also racing and winning at Championship levels, resulted in a number of significant improvements. There is no such thing as ‘it can’t be faster’.

TR-8 was the refinement of a grand change to outline and twist initiated with the seventh in the Team Race Series. Encouraged by results we were seeing in all kinds of racing all over the world, we knew that beginning with these successful designs was already a head start. The goal was simple. The TR-9 race sails have to manage increased range and top speed without compromising instant acceleration out of the jibes. We achieved this by tackling a number of elements, from tuning luff curve and shaping relationships, to outline adjustments, and re-evaluating the stretch and orientation of sail body materials.

COLORCOMBOS

4.7 | 5.1 | 5.5 | 5.9 | 6.3 | 6.6 | 7.0 | 7.6 | 8.4 | 9.2 | 10.0 | 11.0 | 12.0The modified structure of the TR-9 wide luff increases the use of ultra-light Technora™ in the upper half of the sleeve. This achieved two goals. By reducing stretch in the upper sleeve there is better range and stability, and the added benefit of reducing weight in the top of the sail.

The outline geometries and aspect ratios have been adjusted on a size-by-size basis to ensure optimum balance and tension throughout the range. Correct tension relationships are confirmed scientifically through the use of our custom load cell. This assures a rational level of change going from one sail to another. Leech twist profiles achieve the magic balance of enough release for light handling and control in gusts, while still maintaining sufficient tension for good acceleration and forward drive. The new sleeve material configuration allows increased cam pressure to maintain a locked profile, while still allowing painless cam rotation. Added tension in the lower body has been carefully balanced with the improved release in the mid and upper leech to ensure that the sails feel efficient and slippery in the wind, giving tremendous range.

TR TECHNORA VERSION OF TR

xt

Page 33: 2013 MauiSails Brochure

For the racer who is looking at the lightest and potentially fastest TR-9, we are again offering a version using the well tested ODL04 Technora™ laminate. For the racer who is looking at the lightest and potentially fastest TR-9, we are again offering a version using the well tested ODL04 Technora™ laminate. A significant modification to the body panel layout of the TR-9 XT locates materials in a way that best combines the “crisp” feel of monofilm in the lower body with the light weight and softness of Technora™ in the upper sail body and

leech. Test results of the new layout have shown significant advantage over previous constructions.

Each size is tested and developed individually and the final designs are chosen based on the best general performance characteristics of increased range and top speed without compromising acceleration out of maneuvers. Tuning the luff curve and shaping relationships, and evaluating the stretch and orientation of sail body materials have been the means to achieving these goals.

By modifying the TR-9 wide luff by using additional ultra-light Technora™ in the upper half of the sleeve we have reduced stretch in that area and thus added more range and stability with more solid cam positioning, all without giving up the smooth tacking and jibing. There is also the added benefit of reducing weight in the top of the sail.COLOR

This controlled level of change going from one sail to another gives us the magic balance of light handling and control in gusts, with sufficient tension for acceleration and forward drive.

For the ultimate in racing success, be sure and add at least one TR-9 XT to your quiver for 2013. We want this to be a year of competition that will leave all the real challenges up to you. Our excellent Maui based test team of Micah Buzianis and Phil McGain and the generous feedback from around the world has been instrumental in the day to day progression of MauiSails race sails. A word of caution though... the refinement found in the TR-9s may occasionally take your breath away.

All plastic parts are designed, developed, and molded to create these special products, the recognized highest standard of carbon booms in the windsurfing industry today.

It’s been many years with the graphic unchanged and along the way we have been continuously improving small details. The adjustment clips have gone through a big evolution to prevent the corrosion that affected them (we had to chrome plate the 316SS pins!), and the clip bodies were made stronger as well.

Small adjustments to the layup and material specs were made for the Race 190-240, and from last year, there is a wide tail slalom version of the Slalom 170-230 (the tail piece retrofits both the Wave 170 and 140).

The new grip design has less pieces and a slightly harder character to improve durability.

So the boom is ‘new’ in a sense, but it is still the same old super strong, stiff, perfectly shaped one you might have known before.

SRS RIGSYSTEMEach mast is now individually stressed to 90cm of bend before shipment to eliminate first rigging failures and insure correct bend character. Mast bends are measured and cataloged into spread sheets for later reference if necessary. For 2012 we have placed all emphasis on bend consistency and durability. Small changes to mandrels and layup specifications have definitely improved tested longevity.

Use of the proper mast (Synergy Rig System) produces a steady, light feeling rig that comes from having the foil at the correct angle of attack, regardless of the changing pressure on the rig.

The MauiSails SRS masts are the core of your rig. MauiSails SRS constant curve masts produce energy like a coiled spring. They flex consistently and react fast. This promotes even tension along the entire leech and develops even pressure over the entire rig. The reward is the release of stored energy as you accelerate. By design, the relationship of sail and mast is guaranteed when both are imagined as one.

By integrating the ferrule structure into the lay-up of the lower section of the mast, and by building on specialized two-piece mandrels using high modulus prepreg carbon, we are able to favorably influence the weight/strength ratio. Controlled high temperature curing guarantees maximum durability.
