Welcome to a University filled with opportunity and bathed in fresh air

World-class academic programs. Award-winning professors. Steps from the Atlantic Ocean. This is Dalhousie, one of Canada’s oldest universities.

Situated in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia, you’ll find historic buildings covered in ivy, a warm and welcoming community and a host of internationally recognized programs. Our Agricultural Campus, about an hour inland, sits atop a beautiful bluff overlooking a flowing river: a distinct rural setting for our specialized agricultural programs.

Commerce, engineering, agriculture, computer science, English, law, oceanography, architecture – take your pick. Dalhousie offers flexible, comprehensive degree programs in a place where academic tradition blends with breakthrough thinking and research.

Here you’ll be surrounded by professors whose passion for what they do shows, both in and out of the classroom. And you’ll meet fellow students from across Canada and around the globe.

For almost 200 years, Dalhousie has shaped and informed great thinkers, including former prime ministers, astronauts, writers, scientists and 86 Rhodes Scholars so far.

We can’t wait to meet our 87th.

old school Founded in 1818 by George Ramsay, Scotland’s ninth Earl of Dalhousie and Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant-Governor of the day, Dalhousie was modelled after the University of Edinburgh.

Add in that Canada is one of the world’s best-educated nations, with a well-developed university system. What’s more, we’re one of the world’s most multicultural societies. Little wonder more than 96,000 international students come here annually.

Where urban and small town unite.HalifaxA lively coastal city of almost 400,000, Halifax is the perfect size – offering a blend of everything you want in an urban setting with a friendly, small town feel. The city’s youthful spirit, rich history and scenic waterfront all combine with our legendary Maritime Canadian charm.

On Dalhousie’s beautiful, tree-lined campus, almost everything is within walking distance. Join friends at our popular Learning Commons. Or relax in one of our many outdoor Adirondack chairs.

Truro/Bible HillOur Agricultural Campus sits just outside Truro, a scenic rural area that’s just an hour from Halifax. The campus is marked by open space and warm, welcoming people.

Regardless of where you study at Dalhousie, you’ll find our commitment to sustainability is evident everywhere – we have a bike-loan program, energy-efficient buildings and locally grown food. In fact, Dalhousie was the first university in the country to receive an Energy Star® from the Government of Canada.

What’s the deal with the weather?Average temperatures in Nova Scotia range from 10°C in fall to -5°C in winter; from 4°C in early spring to 20°C and warmer in summer.

Get outsidePoint Pleasant Park: Enjoying fresh air is easy when you’ve got 185 acres of parkland overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, just a 10-minute walk from campus.

Waterfront: Stroll the scenic Halifax harbourside where you’ll find artists, food, music and much more.

Victoria Park: Close to the Agricultural Campus, these 400 acres wind through a tree-covered gorge complete with waterfalls and walking trails.

academic reputation and credentials

a tradition of excellence in all we do. Dalhousie offers more than 4,000 classes in over 180 degree programs – more than many large Canadian universities. Dalhousie is a world leader in marine biology and ocean-related sciences, and is the only place in Atlantic Canada where you’ll find programs like community design and informatics. And our environment, sustainability and society program is one of the only such programs in North America.

Other popular programs include commerce, engineering, pre-veterinary studies, computer science, agriculture, kinesiology and nursing, to name a few. For a complete listing, see pages 10-11 or visit dal.ca.

Dalhousie is big enough to offer an array of academic choices, but flexible enough to ensure your degree reflects who you truly are and want to be. Suppose you want to combine music and math. Russian and environmental science. Business and biochemistry. You can do it here.

So go ahead, explore new areas and follow your passions. Whatever you choose, you’ll gain valuable career-based skills and knowledge along the way.

life at dal – inside the classroom

the professors won’t forget your name. and you won’t forget theirs. What makes a really great class? Simple. A really great professor.

Our professors are experts in their fields. Friendly and accessible, they engage, motivate and inspire you. They love to share their passion for discovery in the classroom. They love what they do. And it shows.

Roberta Barker, Faculty of Arts and Social SciencesIn a local Best of Halifax guide, Roberta Barker was named “Best Professor” not once or twice, but four times. You can find her expanding young minds in classes such as Play Analysis for Directing and Gender in Theatre.

Derek Lynch, Faculty of AgricultureOrganic agriculture is a rapidly growing industry with increasing product demand from consumers around the world. But organic farmers face unique business challenges. Derek Lynch, a Canada Research Chair in Organic Agriculture, is helping Canadian producers grow organic products more successfully and more sustainably. Through multi-scale, on-farm and station-based research, his work will enable farmers and producers to address both their challenges and growing consumer demand, at the same time.

Jeff Dahn, Faculty of ScienceAttached to your cellphone? Big fan of hybrid and electric cars? So is Jeff Dahn. He’s a pioneer and world authority on advanced lithium-ion batteries — the ones in your cellphone and laptop. He’s also an outstanding first-year physics teacher and has received the Excellence in Teaching Undergraduate Physics Medal awarded by the Canadian Association of Physicists.

srini sampalli Professor, Faculty of Computer Science

“All the professors at Dalhousie are so welcoming. If you have a question you know you can approach them. And it’s amazing how professors interact with students here. They don’t give you the answer right away – they make you think.”
