What is your most memorable assignment and favorite photo of 2012?

There have been a few memorable ones, though they have been, unfortunately, tragic ones. These photos have helped me when I suffered a tragedy and other changes within my own personal life. It is the people that I photograph (or those at the events) that encourage me through their own words and actions. For example, a mother whose son was killed in action spokes at his service and said, “ I don’t understand, but I trust.” Another memorable photo was of a local veteran who lost both of his legs while serving in the military. He brought the Wounded Warrior’s baseball team to Fond du Lac for a weekend tournament. In an interview with our summer intern, he talked about his challenges saying, “This is my new normal.” Life altering changes we face almost every day, some more challenging or controversial than others, are the things that I often photograph right after the fact. It is the aftermath that makes things memorable to me, especially the way in which people ban together and support each other.

My favorite photo is usually nature related, this year it is a tie. I was assigned to videotape and photograph some items for the upcoming Day Trip video segments at Horicon Marsh. It was the first day back after a tragic death in my family and a storm was rolling in. The emotions that I felt were captured through out that shoot. Beauty of a white egret popped as dark blue clouds rolled in, reminding me that in every tragedy there is good; we just need to wait and look for it keeping in mind that there is a reason for everything and that for me, God is in control. My other favorite is of a house fire in December, in the Town of Byron. I realize that this was a huge loss and very scary for the family as I still have that firefighter in me. An aerial ladder was spraying water onto the fire as smoke rolled out. Something drew me to the orange glow and the process of putting out that fire.

How has the web and online photography changed or enhanced your approach?

For me, it has not changed too much. I tend to take a lot of photos in general. I like to show people at community events and creating galleries online helps show more of the event than the one or two pictures in print. I always say people like to look for themselves or those they know. I tend to look for my family when I know there is a photographer at an event that they may be at. I have not taken as many IDs as I may have in the past if I know the photos will be for online or in a gallery. When in a school (or special function) I still ask if everyone ok to be in print and/or online. If not, I usually try not to shoot that student/person.

What gear to you carry while on the job?

For work I carry a backpack camera bag with usually one camera, a Nikon D3. I also carry a flash unit, wide angle lens, 17-55mm lens, and 70-200 lens. Extra batteries, pens, (pencils for those cold days when the pens don’t work), fine tip sharpies, a note book, business cards, and hot hands to keep the batteries warm during the winter days. I currently have a DQ gift card that I forgot to give to my son as a stocking stuffer. On occasions I take the 300 lens with me to certain events (sometimes with a mono pod). I have my iPhone that I use for video. If I know that I will be doing more video work, I will bring along the D300 camera that offers video function. I like to keep things simple and not carry so much. Most importantly I carry my ID with me, so that the community can identify who I am if they don’t already know me.

Patrick Flood chief photographerWhat is your favorite photographic experience of 2012?

I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but it was powerful. A car crashed into a group of motorcycles on Highway 151 causing several fatalities. A few walking wounded were mulling about watching helplessly as emergency workers tended to their riding buddies. One particularly tough looking leather-clad biker sat down in the weeds by the side of the road, overcome with emotion. There was so much of that scene

I could not show, and getting what I could with decorum was an experience I wont forget.

How has the web and online avenues changed or enhanced your approach to photography?

We are shooting much more video than we used to, and most of it is done with just our phones. I’ve found a bunch of cheep little toys for my iPhone that tweak the video and photo capabilities, but the best stuff is still done with our traditional cameras.

What type of gear do you carry while on the job? Why?

Aside from Nikon bodies and two main lenses, I like playing around with setting wireless strobes in situations where I have some time and a willing subject, though natural light is still my favorite.

I have had fun playing with the iPhone and cool apps you can get, such as time lapse video applications, and the ability to send things to our facebook and twitter accounts directly from the scene.

We often see the definition of community come out as a result of a particular instance: a big win at the local high school, a great turnout at the annual festival, or the strengthened bond after a tragedy. We are fortunate that in Fond du Lac, Dodge, Green Lake, and Calumet Counties our neighborliness goes beyond our front doors and manifests in local businesses, churches, schools, civic groups and recreational activities.

With technology at the forefront of communication, our communities consist of people living all over the world, who may call Fond du Lac, Lomira, Markesan, or Chilton, or other parts of the surrounding counties, home.

Today, a photo can be transmitted across the street or across the continent in a matter of seconds with no less of a bond and connection to the photo’s origin that is it was passed from neighbor to neighbor. Though spread far and wide, communities are closer than ever, and in many different ways.

By capturing the essence of our communities in photographs we are able savor and share in the things that make our villages, towns, and cities so great. The photos in the Community section of Revue follow the common bonds we as residents share in making our hometowns a great place to live, work and play.

Photos are a means of sharing experiences, both good and bad, whether it be a child’s first trip to the Fond du Lac County Fair or Celebrate Waupun, a volunteer opportunity at Free SPIRIT Riders or remembering a loved one by participating in Relay for Life. By sharing these experiences through photography, we often end up giving those viewing the photos the opportunity to take part in the future, ever strengthening the connection between one another and where we live.

To showcase our area communities via photos is to ensure that there is still something positive to look forward to, to be a part of and to celebrate.

2012 was a year of elections and tragic crashes, of devastating fires and drought.

The stories that filled the pages of The Reporter and dominated www.fdlreporter.com provided the details of these events and often the story behind the story. The photos often spoke volumes more.

A photo of three girls standing at the roadside memorial erected for their classmates captured the anguish felt by a community. The image of the driver in that crash listening as a judge handed down her sentence was heartbreaking for any parent.

The photo that captured the grisly aftermath of a crash involving several motorcyclists stirred calls for action.

The orange glow in the sky left little to the imagination regarding the devastation wrought by a house fire.

When news happens, in all weather, at all times of the day and night, Patrick Flood and Aileen Andrews are there to capture it. The digital world has allowed even quicker transfer of those images from disc to The Reporter website, tablet and mobile editions. Photos from a fire can be transmitted online within minutes of the click of the shutter or the button on an iPhone.

It is testament to the technical skills Patrick and Aileen possess that those images can capture not only the event, but often the emotion of the moment, the tragedy of the moment, the significance of the

moment.

There are also those photos that require preparation, a sense of melting into the background, of unobtrusively capturing the shot without disturbing the events. Aileen and freelance photographer Doug Raflik accomplished this with their work at the funeral for a Mayville soldier.

These are the moments that make up our lives. The moments captured and printed and posted as part of the historical record. When historians look back and try to learn about us, they will not only be greeted with compelling stories that detail the events, but photos that artfully document our lives and the events that are part of that history.

Stashed away in attics and closets around America are boxes filled with childhood memories.

School pictures, awards, report cards, yearbooks, an old football jersey, a dried out corsage from a prom date long past.

Those formative years have a way of revisiting us throughout our lives and the days spent in classrooms somehow define the essence of who we are.

Photographers Pat Flood and Aileen Andrews are journalists with a keen knack of telling a story through their capturing of moments in time. Schools are ripe for storytelling through images, as seen in the Patrick’s photo of a young girl getting off the bus

at Lakeshore Elementary School.

It’s the start of the school year, evident by her pretty new dress with matching pink shoes and backpack. There’s a look of determination on her face.

Aileen Andrews is a familiar presence at school happenings: homecoming, graduation, football games, band concerts and musicals. Her photos share with readers the excitement of the event – she’s good at zeroing in on faces.

The Reporter’s news coverage area of Fond du Lac County and Northeastern Dodge County includes 11 public school districts as well as several parochial school systems.

Our photographers travel hundreds of miles each year on rural country roads to give readers an opportunity to view all the great things happening in education today. Many of the photos accompany stories that appear on Sunday’s “Your Schools” page.

With all the social media these days it’s good to know that so much of it starts with a great school snapshot that needs to be shared.

Those timeless school scenes will be forever etched in the hallowed halls of who we are.

It is no secret that you can travel just about anywhere in Fond du Lac, Dodge, Calumet and Green Lake Counties and find beautiful landscapes soaked with the colors of the seasons. Just catching a glimpse of the sun glittering through falling hay at the Empire Thresheree, feeling the sincerity of a smile on a snowman after the first snow or seeing the pride on a hunters face after a successful hunt envelopes the spirit of the season.

We often times are stopped in our tracks to take in a scene, eagerly pointing it out to someone nearby. Photographers, however, do the job of recording that moment for our

prolonged enjoyment. Their skills usually find the perfect angle, perfect light, and perfect instant to snap the shot.

We can count our photographers lucky to have some of the best scenery and most diverse seasons to photograph, which enhances their photos in extraordinary ways. Add moments from our daily lives and happenings of our great towns and cities throughout the area, and you have life captured in its best form.

Many of our most cherished memories as human beings can be linked to the seasons. Meeting Santa face to face or being scared out

of our wits at a haunted house are memories that last a lifetime. We do, also, remember the little things, that only a camera can capture, like a perfect ten canon ball into the pool on a hot summer day or the vibrant colors that radiate from exquisitely ripe produce.

Through their photos, our photographers have frozen in time a view of the seasons that many don’t often think to capture and they have the ability to show a particular time of year from various perspectives, allowing the viewer the opportunity to find their own specific and special meaning.

There’s no question that athletes love to see their pictures from the field of battle.

Cynical instinct says that it’s because we have such an image conscious society. But is it that simple?

Think about all of the planning that goes into the family portrait or senior photos. Clothes have to be picked out well in advance and coordinated with others in the photo. Hair and make-up has to be done just right. The backdrop selected with considerable thought. The photographer tells the subject “move an inch to the right”, “now tilt your head this way.” And finally: “cheese.”

Hours can go into the whole process simply to create the right image.

Sports photography couldn’t be more different. Here you have teenagers wearing helmets and tank tops and shorts, and pants they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing off the playing surface, all in strangely mismatched colors. Hair, if not covered by a helmet, is sticking all over the place.

Sweat beads down their faces and rarely is there a smile. Instead of the happy “cheese” moment, there are mostly expressions of exhaustion or determination or even anger. Game photos are taken without the subject even realizing its happening.

It’s the photo no one would ever want taken at the mall, yet it’s the one every parent wants in the scrapbook and every athlete wants on their Facebook page.

Not because it’s the image they desire, but because it’s the image that exists. There’s nothing phony about the expressions of ecstasy or agony, or anything in between, found in these photos.

Sports photography isn’t just capturing a moment in a silly game, it’s capturing something real. It’s the reason these photos are so popular and why they should be celebrated.
