Glossary

Lehman College Data Book page 65 Fall 2013

Undergraduate Transfer Students. Matriculants in any

undergraduate degree program who have previously earned credit

toward this degree for course work completed at another college,

including CUNY institutions. Internal transfers (students enrolled in

the previous semester on a nondegree basis who matriculate for the

first time in the current semester at the same college) and

undergraduate readmits are not counted as transfer students.

Age. Age is calculated as of the beginning of each fall semester.

Average Credits. Includes only credits applicable toward a degree.

Average Equated Credits. Includes credits and remedial,

compensatory, and developmental course hours.

College Admissions Average. Students' cumulative average in

high school in college preparatory course work. The average is

computed on a basis of 0 to 100. Only grades in college-

preparatory courses are counted.

Class / Class Standing. An indicator of degree progress based on

cumulative degree credits earned prior to the current semester. For

undergraduates, class standing is calculated as follows: 0 to 27.5

credits -- freshman; 28 to 60.5 credits -- sophomore; 61 to 93.5

credits -- junior; 94 or more credits -- senior.

First-time Freshmen. Students matriculating for the first time in an

undergraduate degree program who have not previously earned

credit toward this degree from any college or university. Students

who enroll as first-time freshmen during a summer session are

counted as first-time freshmen in the following fall term.

First-time Graduate Students. Students matriculating for the first

time in a graduate degree program.

Full-time. Students taking 12 or more credits and remedial hours

are considered full-time.

Full-time Equivalent (FTE). A standardized measure of enrollment

equal to a full-time load of credits and hours. Undergraduate FTEs

are calculated as the total of credits and remedial, compensatory, or

developmental hours associated with course enrollment divided by

15. Graduate FTEs equal credits divided by 12.

High School Units. A unit is equal to one year of study. For

example, one unit of math equals one year of math; one-half unit of

English equals one semester of English.

Lower Division / Upper Division. For the purpose of categorizing

enrollments, students are sometimes classed as lower division

(freshmen and sophomores) or upper division (juniors and seniors).

Nondegree Enrollment. Nondegree students are enrolled in credit-

bearing courses, but are not matriculated in a degree program.

Nondegree students are not eligible for financial aid. Nondegree

enrollment is a component of total enrollment reported here.

Race / Ethnicity. Since the Fall of 1988, CUNY has gathered

information on race and ethnicity from its application form. Students

are asked which category best describes them: Black, White, non-

Hispanic, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander, American Indian or

Alaskan Native.

Readmitted Students. Returning students who have previously

attended and left the college.

Residency. The county, state, or country of which the student is a

legal resident.

SEEK Program. Students are eligible for the SEEK Program

(Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) at CUNY's senior

colleges -- if they are academically or economically disadvantaged,

have a high school diploma or GED, and have not previously

attended a college or university.
