A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK Visiting Wittenberg scored on each of its first three possessions and outgained DePauw, 461-171, on the way to a 45-0 NCAC win in the Tigers’ home opener at Blackstock Stadium. Wittenberg took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in 13 plays with quarterback Reed Florence scoring from one yard. Evan Grissom’s extra point made it 7-0 with 10:23 left in the first. The hosts failed to pick up a first down on their first series and Wittenberg struck again as Florence scored on a 4-yard run with 4:20 remaining. Another three-and-out for DePauw’s offense gave Wittenberg the ball back and the guests drove to the DePauw 2 before Dennis Callicutt stopped Florence for a three-yard loss on third-and-goal. Grissom booted a 22-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-0 with 12:10 left in the half. Midway through the second period, Wittenberg was called for a personal foul on Nikko Sansone’s punt return giving the Tigers the ball on Wittenberg’s 34. Freshman Matt Hunt entered the game at quarterback for DePauw and converted a fourth-down pass to Barry Flynn for 16 yards to the 16. Two plays later, however, Hunt was picked off by Mark Swope at the Wittenberg 4 after Evan Killilea deflected the pass. Wittenberg then needed just six plays to cover 96 yards with Jimmy Dehnke scoring on a 3-yard run with 2:55 left in the half to make it 24-0. Dehnke scored on Wittenberg’s first pos- session of the second half with a five-yard run before Florence tossed a nine-yard scor- ing pass to Sean Gary to make it 38-0 with 6:39 remaining in the third. Banjo blocked Eric Malm’s punt and the visitors needed just one play to score with backup quarterback Zack Jenkins scoring on his first play of the game - a five-yard run. DePauw’s best scoring chance came on its final series of the game when it drove to the Wittenberg 1, but Amen Galley was stopped by Dwight Hill and Brady Vanover for a two-yard loss on fourth-and-goal. Florence completed 20 of 31 passes for 212 yards with Brendon Cunningham hauling in five for 64 yards. Sean Gary carried the ball 14 times for 110 yards as Wittenberg totaled 235 rushing yards and 226 through the air. Hunt completed 9 of 18 for 97 yards with Justin Murray connecting on three of his six attempts. Sansone rushed for 26 yards on four carries. Cody Baker paced DePauw with 16 tack-les followed by Adam Folta with 10 and Will Longthorne seven. Kyle Sanning led Wittenberg with seven stops with Spencer Leno and Hill each adding five.
REVIEWING LAST YEAR’S MEETING DePauw set a school single-game record with 45 pass completions in its NCAC game with Kenyon, but the Tigers suffered a 21-19 loss to the Lords. The loss was DePauw’s third straight by four or fewer points. The Lords reached the board on the open-ing kickoff as Brett Williams attempted to field Eric Malm’s boot at his own 7, but the ball bounced off his chest and Carlo Gagliardo recovered at the Kenyon 10 and scampered 90 yards for the score. DePauw responded later in the first as Amen Galley’s 2-yard run capped an 11-play, 73-yard drive which included Drew Seaman’s entrance into the game and an 8-of-8 passing performance. Malm’s streak of 26 straight PATs came to an end and the Tigers trailed 7-6. Kenyon answered as Dan Shannon com-pleted a 53-yard scoring pass to Gagliardo on the fifth play of the next series to make it 14-6 with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza. Early in the second, Nikko Sansone re-turned a Kenyon punt 42 yards to the Lords’ 21. The Tigers decided to go for it on 4th-and-1, but a false start penalty pushed them back to the 16. Holder Robby Schuler grabbed the high snap on Malm’s field goal attempt and tossed the ball downfield where Kenyon’s Kolin Sullivan picked it off at the 1. The Tigers converted a third down and then a fourth in their final series of the half, but Seaman’s fourth-dpwn pass to Taylor Wagner was incomplete with 12 seconds left. Both teams drove into the other’s territory in the third, but came away empty on fourth-down plays. DePauw then embarked on a 16-play se-ries which stalled at the Kenyon 14 early in the fourth and Malm’s 31-yard field goal try was wide left. The Tigers’ defense stopped the Lords and DePauw took over on its own 47. Seaman teamed with Cato for 33 yards on the first play and the Tigers drove to the Kenyon 2 where Armani Cato punched it in to cut the lead to 14-12 with 10:18 left. The two-point conversion pass failed. Kenyon came right back with a 10-play, 61-yard drive as Brett Williams scored on a 7-yard run to push the Lords’ lead to 21-12 with 5:54 remaining. DePauw closed to within two again at 21-19 as Cato scored on a 1-yard run with 3:04 left and Malm booted the PAT. The Tigers pinned Kenyon at their own 15 on the ensuing kickoff, but the Lords con-verted a pair of third-down plays and ran out
the clock. Seaman completed 39-of-54 passes for a career-high 322 yards. His 39 completions tied the second most in school history and the Tigers’ 45 as a team broke the mark of 41 set against Hope in 2000. Justin Murray was 6 of 13 for 44 yards. In all, 11 different Tigers caught passes led by Kevin Ude with career highs of nine catches and 79 yards, Bobby Coburn followed with seven catches. DePauw totaled 419 yards of offense and ran 93 offensive plays. Sansone led the Ti-gers with 172 all-purpose yards. Williams paced Kenyon with 127 rushing yards in 29 tries, while Shannon completed 11 of 21 for 151 yards. Nick Gasbarro paced the Lords with four catches. Jack Quinn led DePauw with 13 tackles followed by Mitch Dwenger with 10. Sullivan led the defense with 18 tackles, an intercep-tion and a forced fumble, while Antonio Cataldo had 11 stops and Reed Franklin 10.
UP NEXT DePauw returns to the road next Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest in Granville, Ohio, against Denison University.

Bill Lynch, a head football coach at three different NCAA levels and a collegiate coach for 32 years, returns to DePauw to lead the Tigers’ program. A 1977 Butler graduate, Lynch has most recently served as the as-sociate athletic director for develop-ment at his alma mater since March 2011. In that role he was responsible for athletics annual giving through the Bulldog Club and served as a major gift officer for athletics. He also was the sport administrator for the football program. Lynch, who led DePauw to an 8-2 mark in 2004 including a 14-7 win over Wabash in the annual Monon Bell clash, was the South-ern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in his lone season in Greencastle and was the first
football coach in SCAC history to earn the distinction in his initial season. He succeeded Nick Mourouzis who served as head coach the previous 23 seasons. The 2004 Tigers ranked 16th in NCAA Division III rushing offense after averaging 254.6 rushing yards per game. DePauw’s 2,546 rush-ing yards was just two yards shy of the school record and the Tigers’ averages of 5.0 yards per rushing play and 5.8 yards per offensive play still rank second in program history. Additionally, under Lynch’s tutelage, seven DePauw players earned all-SCAC first team honors and wide receiver JaMarcus Shephard was one of only two Division III players invited to the 2005 Hula Bowl Maui All-Star Classic In January 2005, Lynch was named the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Indiana University where he joined longtime friend and head coach Terry Hoeppner. Under Lynch’s leadership, Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis posted one of the best freshman campaigns in program history, ranking 21st in the nation in total offense and third among freshmen with 242.0 yards per game. As a team, the Hoosiers scored their most points (277) since 2001, aver-aging 335.9 yards and 222.1 passing yards per game. The interim head coach for two games during the 2006 season, Lynch was named the head coach in June 2007 just days before coach Hoeppner passed away after battling cancer. Lynch directed Indiana to a 7-6 record in 2007 and a berth to the Insight Bowl. The only head coach in Indiana history to guide his team to a bowl game in his first season, Lynch was just the fourth coach in the program’s history to lead a team to a postseason game. Furthermore, the seven victories in his debut season were the second most for a first-year Hoosiers head coach. In his four seasons in Bloomington, Lynch added a pair of “I’s” to the Old Oaken Bucket chain, defeating Purdue in 2007 and 2010. Lynch mentored three all-Americans, one Academic All-America® selection, seven first team all-Big Ten selections, 74 academic all-Big Ten honorees and a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient. Additionally, the Hoosiers produced two Ted Hendricks Award finalists as well as finalists for the Lou Groza Award, the Biletnikoff Award and the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. A four-year letter winner in both football and basketball and captain of each at Butler, Lynch earned Associated Press Little All-America honors at quarterback in 1974, 1975 and 1976 and was the first Butler student-athlete to twice earn the Indiana Collegiate Conference’s prestigious Tony Hinkle Award presented for both outstanding scholastic and athletic achievement. Lynch earned and was the Indiana Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and ICC Back of the Year all three seasons. A captain as a senior, he still holds the school record with 60 career touchdown passes and ranks third with 5,909 career passing yards. He also led the basketball team in assists in 1975-76. After graduation, Lynch spent seven seasons as a Bulldogs assis-tant coach, including stints as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. He moved on to Northern Illinois University as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in 1984, and was the quarterbacks coach of the United States Football League’s Orlando Renegades in 1984. Lynch then returned to Butler in 1985 when he was named the
DePauw Head Coach Bill LynchBulldogs’ head coach. While at the then NCAA Division II program, his teams compiled a 36-12-3 record including Heartland Collegiate Conference championships in 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989. He was named the conference’s coach of the year in 1985, 1987 and 1988 and the American Football Coaches Association Region 3 Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1988. Lynch directed the Bulldogs to the Division II postseason in 1988 and into the top 20 rankings four times. Lynch then moved on to Ball State University where he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Cardinals from 1990 through 1992. He served as quarterback coach for Indiana University in 1993 and 1994 and the Hoosiers played in the 1993 Independence Bowl while compiling a 15-8 record in those two seasons. In 1995, Lynch returned to Ball State as head coach and began an eight-year stint that included a Mid-American Conference cham-pionship in 1996 and an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also directed the Cardinals to the MAC West Division co-championship in 2001. His teams were recognized by the AFCA for outstanding graduation rates in 2000, 2001 and 2002. In September of 2003 he was named the associate athletic direc-tor for community relations at Ball State and served as a liaison with University Development and the Cardinal Varsity Club among several duties.
