January - 2013

Dear Friends,

What's new in the world? As I write this, it is late October, but by the time it reaches your mailbox it will be early January. A lot will be new by then - or should I say old? Halloween candy will be long gone as will leftover turkey and stuffing. We will know the election results. Hopefully, the Tigers will have won the World Series. Everything we worried about accomplishing before Christmas will be done - or not. We will know how we spent New Year's Eve and who won the Rose Bowl. By the time you read this letter, all of the above will be new and “old news.” Or at least, we who live "in time" will see it that way.

We typically perceive our lives and time itself as linear, from birth to death. Ironically, we tend to behave as if we live forever and avoid facing the fact that we don't. Or, we resolve to live in the present moment, but instead dwell too much on the past or the future.

As we gain wisdom, we start to notice that life is really more cyclical than linear. This is akin to humanity's reluctant recognition that the earth is round, not flat. It is comforting to know that we can never fall off the

edge, yet, disturbing to realize that the more we try to walk away from things, we always wind up facing them again. What goes around does truly come around.

Whether humans perceive time to be linear or cyclical, God’s time is neither. Eternity is always and now. Perhaps this is why a wise person once said that the spiritual journey is only an inch long, but a million miles deep. Traveling far and wide is enticing, but if we really want to get somewhere, the best place to aim is downward and inward.

If you are at a point in life from which the inner journey beckons, I invite you to Dominican Center. Come to this peaceful, warm and welcoming place – to reflect and pray, learn and grow, as individuals and/or through meeting with others. We provide a variety of spirituality programs, workshops, retreats, individual and group spiritual direction. I think you will find DCM to be a wonderful port from which to embark as well as a safe harbor when you need a rest. All are welcome.

Bon Voyage, Mary VaccaroDirector

PS: Did you know that in addition to our spiritual programs, DCM offers meeting space for organizations, families and social groups, including delicious food and gracious service? See page 15 for more details.

Spiritual DirectionSpiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship. Another approach that is relatively new is that of group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in Spiritual Direction offers a safe, non-judgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/herconscious relationship with God. WorshipOUR CHAPELS ARE SACRED SPACES FOR PRAYER

Since its beginning in the thirteenth century, the Dominican Order has treasured liturgical prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and strengthens us to be authentic in today’s world. The quality of preaching, music, and inclusivity are of primary importance to us. We invite you to come pray with us.

Eucharist

The Greek word for church, ekklesia, means gathering, and Eucharist is the foundation of all our gathering. It transforms how we belong to each other and therefore who we are. We gather because we are willing to be gathered into the community of faith, the body of Christ, which stretches across time and space. We gather to name the God who is already present. At Eucharist God makes a home in us, and we are at home in God. The Sunday Assembly is a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. We invite you to join us in worship and song.
