2013 – Concrete Pavement Specification Changes
Seven Major Specifications were revised or created
• 499 Concrete - Generalo Prescription mixes Class F, C, S, HP, MS, FS are goneo Well graded aggregate requirements for both 451/452 and 511.
• 451/452 Concrete Pavement o Revisions to adopt SS 888 ODOT QC/QA pavement concrete specifications
• 455 Quality Control Plan, Testing QC/QA Concreteo Incorporates concrete quality control specifications for 511 and 451/452 into one document
• Supplements 1126/1127o S1126 Mix design submittal for JMFo S1127 New Pay factor criteria for 451, 452 and 511
Three other pavement specifications were updated to reflect material changes• 255 Full Depth Removal with Rigid Replacement
o RRCM - special mix design for rapid repair concrete was added.• 608 Walks, Curb Ramps, and Steps• 609 Curbing, Concrete Medians, and Traffic Islands
451-452 Specification Changes
• Materials section was updated to reflect the modifications to 499.
• References to 455 Quality Control Plan, Testing QC/QA Concrete
• Basis of Payment was modified to include “with QC/QA” or without.
• Longitudinal tining is now default. Transverse tining only allowed in small areas approved by Engineer.
• MIT Scan-2 Equipment is required for DBI paving.
• 451.18/S1127 Strength Pay Factors
2013 – “with QC/QA” or without?
Without QC/QA• Contractor performs QC to meet CMS 499. • ODOT Perform QC checks on project for compliance with
CMS 499 (slump, air, yield).• Beam for every 7500yd2 or fraction thereof daily by
ODOT.• Supplier/Contractor responsible to assure your well
graded aggregates are maintained in Zone II.• Core for every 2000yd2 by contractor per S1064.
With QC/QA• CMS 455 governs QC/QA in addition to CMS 499
455 Quality Control Requirements
• Incorporates concrete quality control specifications from SS 888 and SS 898 for 511 and 451/452 into one document
• Only when “with QC/QA” is specified in the bid item.o 451-452 – generally over 10,000 Sq Yd
• Sets minimum requirements for Contractor’s QualityControl Plan (QCP).
• Project Engineer must review and approve QCP and can require changes.
• Sets the Quality Assurance testing requirements for the ODOT Project Staff.o Side by side air content – 10% of QC Sampleso QA strength core for 1 in 10 QC Strength Cores
Supplement 1126 / 1127
S1126 - Developing and Submitting a Portland Cement Concrete Mix Design for Acceptance• New supplement for Suppliers submission for JMF.
S1127 - Pay Factors Determination for Pavement and Structure Concrete• Provides direction for pay factor determination and
example calculations.
• 202 – Steps Removed can be Lump or Footo Measure along the front edge of each tread.
Include the width of an integral wall in the width measurement.
• 251 – Partial Depth Pavement Repairo Partial Depth repairs can now be paid for by the
Square Yard or Cubic Yard.
320 – Rubblize and Roll
• Spec only applies to Reinforced Concrete Pavements.
• Construction test pit requirements are redefined.
• Particle size control has been adjusted.
423 – Crack Sealing, Hot applied
• All items can now be paid for in Square Yards (Square Meters), in addition to Pounds (Kilograms).
615 - Roads and Pavements for Maintaining Traffic
• Section 615.01 Description work has been revised to include the removal of appurtenances.
• For rigid pavements, deleted the use of Class C concrete and replaced it with Concrete, Class QC 1.
• Section 615.10 Basis of Payment: Roads for Maintaining Traffic will include the installation, maintenance, and removal of all fencing, earthwork, guardrail, sidewalk, and all other items as necessary to provide a complete, functional, and safe installation.
