WHAT IS A BALAncER®Balancer® cattle are registered hybrid seedstock and
have documented pedigrees and EPDs. Balancer animals are 25 to 75 percent Gelbvieh with the balance Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness and fertility with the maternal and mar-bling of Angus. Producers can chose the percentage of each breed to best suit their marketing target for their calves.
THE PRoFITABLE BLEnD oF GELBVIEH & AnGuS GEnETIcSBalancer hybrids offer a simple and powerful way to
maintain hybrid vigor and the proper blend of British and continental genetics in your cow herd with complicated crossbreeding systems.Registered Balancer hybrids combine the Angus advan-
tages of calving ease, moderate mature size, marbling and convenience traits with Gelbvieh growth, muscle leanness, fertility and unequaled pounds of calf per cow exposed in a single animal. And, documented research proves that Balancer hybrids
offer the same consistency as their purebred parents with improved uniformity of composition. Plus, Balancer bulls and females are registered seedstock, complete with docu-mented percentage and EPDs.
THE PERFEcT FIT on AnGuS-BASED coWSusing Gelbvieh on your Angus-based cows is the opti-
mum fit in today’s competitive beef industry. You will get cattle that fit the pasture, the feedlot and the meat case. Plus, you get the priceless bonus of the industry’s most re-spected replacement females. Whether you keep or market these replacements, Gelbvieh x Angus crossed females add dollars to your pocket.use registered Balancer bulls and take advantage of man-
agement convenience and hybrid vigor in a single package, while producing cattle that fit the pasture, feedlot and meat case.

Central Montana Gelbvieh Genetics 6 Keeping Your Program on Target
Sourdough Gelbvieh
Hello all,Well, it is the 18th year this unique bull sale has come together. It is kind
of amazing how this group has persevered. There have been many changes
through the years but here we are again offering quality genetics that you
have a chance to add into your herd.
I am offering 1 purebred and 9 black Balancer and bulls this year that
I believe will work well for a cross breeding program. These bulls have
exhibited good growth and will add hybrid vigor to their calves. 5 of the bulls
are homozygous black by birth right. They are being Igenity DNA tested for
carcass and BVD. Results will be available on sale day.
The bulls were fed at Hould’s feedlot in Malta. They do a great job and I’m
very happy with how they develop the bulls. The bulls have been fertility
tested and will be ready to go to work this spring. Thank you to Sonja Gregory
for ultrasound testing the bulls.
Thanks again and give me a call if you have any questions and I’ll do my

Gelbvieh - The cash cowThe industry focus may shift from time to time, but the money to be made in the cattle business is still on the cow side. Make sure your cowherd is working as hard as you do.
• According to the Meat Animal Research Center, Gelbvieh is the only breed that reduced mature cow size in its germplasm study between 1973 and 2004.
• Crossbreeding with Gelbvieh results in cows that are 30% more productive over their lifetime due to increased fertility, weaning weights, and cow longevity. MARC data shows crossbred cows stay in the herd an average of 1.9 years longer, reducing replacement costs.
• In the most recent MARC evaluation, Gelbvieh-sired calves has the lowest birth weights of the four major continentals and tied for the top survivorabilty to wean-ing of all breeds.

EPD Information
NEW GENERATioN AGA EPDS
The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA
new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.
GElBViEh AND BAlANCER® ShARE A CoMMoN BASE WiTh SiMMENTAl AND RED ANGuS
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.
CAlViNG EASE AND CAlViNG EASE DAuGhTERS EPDS CoNVERTED To iNDuSTRY STANDARD TERMiNoloGYFor over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
MulTi-BREED EPDS PRoViDE MoRE CoMPlETE BAlANCER EPDS
The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.
GRoWTh TRAiTS ARE MoRE REliABlEThe new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.
CARCASS TRAiTS ARE STANDARDizEDIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable.
For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.
ANGuS EPDS DEFiNED(ONLY THOSE SHOWN IN CATALOG ARE IN THIS EXPLANATION)
GRoWThBirth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
CARCASSCarcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
MATERNAlMaternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
$VAluE iNDEXES$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
