  • Leadership for Change Wisdom for a LifetimeThe College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., was founded by Benedictine Sisters in 1913. The college was uniquely and specifically formed by women for women. Saint Benedict was the 13th womens college in the United States and today is one of only 64 womens colleges in the country. Whether in the classroom, at a sporting event, or living in the residence halls, CSB seeks to incorporate learning experiences inspired by the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

The Saint Benedict experience creates a sense of community rarely seen at other colleges. It provides a safe and comfortable environment ideal for inquiring, learning and growing.

Located in the heart of central Minnesota lake country and surrounded by 3,500 acres of pure forests and wholesome prairies, Saint Benedict is just minutes away from the St. Cloud metro area and an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students experience the benefits of small town modesty, while enjoying the convenient access of a big city.

The College of Saint Benedict has a unique partnership with Saint Johns University, a mens college located four miles away. The schools are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. We share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth, and cultural and athletic involvement.

Both schools are dedicated to the development of a person as a whole. Offering single-gender and co-educational experiences, each strive to meet the distinct needs of women and men. Another advantage of this partnership is the expansion of resources for both institutions. CSB and SJU provide the education and opportunities of a large university accompanied with the individual attention of a small private college.

Saint Benedict strives to present students with opportunities to explore, stretch, and challenge their personal excellence. By developing their intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical helath, our goal is to enable every woman to achieve her utmost potential.

The College of Saint Benedicts mission is to foster integrated learning, exceptional leadership for change, and wisdom for a lifetime.

    Benedictine Values

  • The 1970s were a time of change, revolution, and transformation. Increased influence of the womens movement, heightened concern over the environment, and improved space exploration were just a few of the headlines.

    Saint Benedict was changing too.

In the 1976-77 season, the Saint Benedict volleyball team decided they would like their colors to be red and white. Known as the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict, they also decided they wanted a new moniker. So, they held a contest to find a new nickname.

CSB students were invited to submit ideas, and student-athletes selected the one they liked best.

Blazers, submitted by first-year student Mary Haffner, was chosen as the official sports name. This was a perfect fit as it flawlessly described the hard work, determination, and success of the trailblazing women who founded the college.

These sisters blazed their way through a field of uncertainty and unknown land to settle in Minnesota in 1856. They went on to establish the largest Benedictine community in the United States. They also built hundreds of hospitals, schools, orphanages -- and the College of Saint Benedict in 1913.

Blazers pays tribute to the courageous, strong, and bold women of the past and gives encouragement and pride to the women of the future.

The Blazer volleyball team looks to build on last years success, and take another step forward in 2013.

Coming off a 29 win season and berths in both the MIAC Championship game and the NCAA Regional final, the expectations only rise for the Saint Benedict volleyball team in 2013.

For us, its awesome, coming off a year like we had last year, head coach Nicole Hess said. But were starting out at 0-0, and everybody has a new outlook. Were starting over and we have a new group that is getting used to how we do things and everybody starts from the same spot. Just because we were successful last year does not automatically mean that well be successful this year.

The Blazers were 29-6 overall last year, with a 10-1 mark in MIAC play to place second in the regular season. That lone conference loss came to rival St. Thomas, who also bettered the Blazers in the championship match of the conference tournament. After falling in three in the regular season, the Blazers and Tommies battled in an epic five-set thriller in the postseason, showing the growth of a young team throughout the year.

That match also set the stage for the NCAA Regional tournament, where the two teams met for the third time. The Blazers advanced to the Regional Final for the first time since 2008, falling in four to the Tommies, but left with excitement and confidence to build on for 2013.

Nicole Hess returns for her fourth season at the helm after the best season of her career in 2012, and welcomes back all seven starters and each top reserve.

Senior outside hitter Lexi Alm and junior setter Taya Kockelman headline that group after each earned First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-American Honors last year.

After splitting time as a first-year in 2011, Kockelman took full control of the offense last season, and is eager to handle the reigns again. She racked up 1370 total assists a year ago, leading the MIAC in the category while ranking fifth in the nation with 11.14 assists per set.

Im really excited, we have really good hitters this year, Kockelman said. And we have some new ones so its fun to mix it up a little. Our passers are really good and Im really confident this year. Last year it was a little nerve-racking, but this year coming back, I have a lot more confidence in myself and my hitters.

Alm was her favorite target last season, as she set the senior for a league high 470 kills throughout the year. She collected her 1,000th career kill in the season finale and is expected to be one of the top performers in the MIAC again this season.

We just take it one game at a time and one practice at a time, Alm said. We worked hard in the offseason to get better and the coaches are helping us to push harder in practice and set higher standards as well.

Up front for the Blazers, Alm wont be alone, as fellow senior Chelsea Rachel and junior Lexi Rinde return outside. Rinde is a two-time defending All-MIAC selection

Anytime that you have that consistency and there is not a lot of change, thats really helpful and important, Hess said.

The defense should again be paced by libero Victoria Nass. One of the most productive liberos in the conference, Nass set a new CSB record for digs last season with 765 and ranked first in the MIAC and sixth in the nation. Just another piece of the impressive nucleus that the Blazers return.

There will be no easing into the schedule this season, as the Blazers host a Labor Day tournament in the first weekend of the season, featuring a field of seven that includes three other teams that were in the NCAA tournament at the end of last season. As the season wears on, playing in one of the best conferences and regions in the country has the Blazers well aware of the challenge that faces them to continue their success.

Im just a firm believer that if you want to be one of the better teams you have to play those teams, Hess said. I really like playing a tough schedule right away because it shows us our weaknesses and areas that we can improve on. So its awesome, our gym is going to be rocking, we have really great teams coming in and the atmosphere should be fantastic. For us its really important that we set the standards and expectations early and when youre playing really good teams that only helps you.

    Taking Another Step 2013 Outlook

Taya Kockelman (10) and Lexi Alm (13) return after earning Honorable Mention All-America honors in 2012.

Theresa Naumann begins her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Blazers. A four-year volleyball player at CSB, Naumann was a senior captain for the Blazers and averaged 0.63 blocks per game her junior and senior years. She graduated in 2008 with a degree in nutrition.

A native of Columbia Heights, Minn., Naumann is a 2004 graduate of Totino-Grace High School, where she was a two-time all-conference selection in volleyball and captained her volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. Naumann works as an assistant director of admissions at CSB/SJU.

Amanda Anderson enters her 10th year with the Blazer volleyball team as an assistant coach in 2013. She provides extensive experience in coaching and playing volleyball at the collegiate level.

In her nine years with the program, the Blazers have posted a 197-78 overall record, with a 73-27

mark in MIAC play. She was a part of the 2009 MIAC Championship, the 2008 Elite Eight, three MIAC runner-up teams, and another two teams who finished third in the conference.

Andersons resume has depth in coaching experience. In 2003-04 Anderson was the head coach at Central Cass High School and has coached numerous camps across Minnesota and North Dakota including North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State.

Anderson was a member of the North Dakota State womens volleyball team from 1999-2002. The four year letter winner helped guide the Bison to a 29-3 overall record her senior year.

A 2003 graduate of North Dakota State University, Anderson received a Bachelor of Science degree in human performance and fitness, with a minor in business and received a Master of Science degree in sports administration from St. Cloud State University in 2008.

Along with her coaching responsibilities, Anderson serves as assistant campus recreation director at CSB.

Nicole Hess begins her fourth season as head coach of the Blazer volleyball team in 2013, coming off a career year in 2012.

The 2009 MIAC Coach of the Year charted her first career 20-win season on Oct. 13 and before the year was over had the Blazers at 29, marking

the second-highest win total in program history, and best since the 2008 Elite Eight season. She also had the Blazers just one win shy of their first Elite Eight since 2008, falling in four sets to eventual National Champion, St. Thomas.

She led the Blazers into the 2012 MIAC Tournament Championship match, where they fell in five to champion St. Thomas. The Blazer went 10-1 in the regular season, also finishing second to the Tommies.

Hess enters the season with a 129-163 career record, which includes a 65-31 mark at CSB, and a 24-9 record in MIAC games since taking over the Blazers.

In her three seasons at the helm, she has never had a losing season, leading the Blazers into the MIAC Tournament each season and into the NCAA tournament in each of the last two. At the end of the 2012 season, the Blazers were ranked No. 18 by the AVCA, the highest final season ranking of her career.

Lexi Alm and Taya Kockelman became the first two Blazer All-Americans under Hess guidance in 2012, as each earned Honorable Mention honors from the AVCA. In Hess three seasons, her players have earned seven All-MIAC honors, and nine Academic All-MIAC honors.

In her second season as head coach, Hess led the Blazers to an 8-3 MIAC record with an 18-13 overall mark. The Blazers tied for third place in the MIAC and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. On Nov. 1, 2011, Hess earned her 100th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win over Gustavus in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.

During her first year as head coach, Hess led the Blazers to a 6-5 MIAC record and 18-12 overall mark, which clinched a MIAC Playoff berth. CSB upended Saint Marys 3-1 in the first round but fell to eventual conference champion St. Olaf 3-2 in the semifinals.

Hess came to CSB in 2012 from St. Catherine where she was the head coach from 2003-09. She inherited a rebuilding Wildcat program and made great progress in her seven seasons there. During the last two seasons the Wildcats won more than 10 games for the first time since 1996.

As a collegiate player, Hess achieved success as a four-time All-MIAC honoree at St. Olaf College. She was a three-time member of the All-Region team and in 2001 was selected to the AVCA All-America second team. Hess holds school records in career kills (2,041), career hitting percentage (.352), kills in a season (573) and hitting percentage in a season (.392). She graduated from St. Olaf in 2002 with a Bachelors Degree in social studies education. Prior to coaching at St. Catherine, Hess was an assistant volleyball coach at the University of St. Thomas for one season, in which they won the MIAC Championship.

Hess believes discipline is integral to any successful program. Trust, respect and integrity are equally as important as physical strength and talent. Hess develops a supportive, yet challenging environment in which her teams can grow. Every practice, game and season is an opportunity to develop individually and collectively.
