Acoustic IntimacySight isolates, whereas sound incorporates; vision is directional, whereas sound is omni-directional. The sense of sight implies exteriority, but sound creates an experience of interiority. I regard an object, but sound approaches me; the eye reaches, but the ear receives. Buildings do not react to our gaze, but they do return our sounds back to our ears. ‘The centring action of sound affects man’s sense of cosmos,’ writes Walter Ong. ‘For oral cultures, the cosmos is an ongoing event with man at its centre. Man is the umbilicus mundi, the navel of the world.’102 It is thought-provoking that the mental loss of the sense of centre in the contemporary world could be attributed, at least in part, to the disappearance of the integrity of the audible world. Hearing structures and articulates the experience and understanding of space. We are not normally aware of the signifi cance of hearing in spatial experience, although sound often provides the temporal continuum in which visual impressions are embedded. When the soundtrack is removed from a fi lm, for instance, the scene loses its plasticity and sense of continuity and life. Silent fi lm, indeed, had to compensate for the lack of sound by a demonstrative manner of overacting.

to see how far architecture can be removed from function. The

signifi cance of architecture is found in the distance between it and

function.’ 124

Images of ActionStepping stones set in the grass of a garden are images and imprints

of footsteps. As we open a door, the body weight meets the weight

of the door; the legs measure the steps as we ascend a stairway, the

hand strokes the handrail and the entire body moves diagonally

and dramatically through space.

There is an inherent suggestion of action in images of

architecture, the moment of active encounter, or a ‘promise of

function’ 125 and purpose. ‘The objects which surround my body

refl ect its possible action upon them,’ writes Henri Bergson.126 It

is this possibility of action that separates architecture from other

forms of art. As a consequence of this implied action, a bodily

reaction is an inseparable aspect of the experience of architecture.

A meaningful architectural experience is not simply a series of

retinal images. The ‘elements’ of architecture are not visual units

or Gestalt; they are encounters, confrontations that interact with

memory. ‘In such memory, the past is embodied in actions.

Juhani Pallasmaa

First published in 1996, The Eyes of the Skin has become a classic of architectural theory and is required reading on architecture courses around the world. It asks the far-reaching question why, when there are five senses, has one single sense – sight become so predominant in architectural culture and design?

Juhani Pallasmaa argues that the suppression of the other four sensory realms has led to the overall impoverishment of our built environment, often diminishing the emphasis on the spatial experience of a building and architecture’s ability to inspire, engage and be wholly life enhancing.

Includes:

• New essay by architectural author and educator Peter MacKeith that combines both a biographical portrait of Pallasmaa and an outline of his architectural thinking, its origins and its relationship to the wider context of Nordic and European thought, past and present

• Focuses on the fundamental humanity, insight and sensitivity of Pallasmaa’s approach to architecture

• Illustrated by Pallasmaa’s sketches and photographs of his own work

• The new edition also provides a foreword by the internationally renowned architect Steven Holl and a revised introduction by Pallasmaa himself

A must read for every architecture student!

2 / INTRODUCT ION

What Is Architecture?Architecture is a very complex discipline. Most people live their lives in constant contact with architecture. It provides a place to dwell, work, and play. With so much responsibility for determining our experiences, and with such a variety of uses, architecture has too many forms to be precisely categorized. One house is used essentially the same way as any other, but how many different sizes, shapes, or configurations are possible for a house? There is no single correct formula for determining the perfect layout of a house, or any other type of building. At the same time as architecture is indefinite, it also has a responsibility to facilitate specific functions.

Houses may come in various forms and densities

Artistic Discipline and Technical ProfessionArchitects can use almost any techniques for drawing or making models to develop their ideas. However, they must document and communicate those ideas using a universally understood graphic language.

Capital complex of Bangladesh, Dacca, 1962, Louis Kahn

Because of the diverse forms architecture can take and the need for it to function in specific ways, it should be considered both an art and a science. It is an artistic discipline that seeks to invent through design. It is also a technical profession that relies on specific techniques of building construction.

Creative Process and Construction MethodArchitects go through many versions of an idea to perfect it. They experiment with different materials and modes of representing their ideas in order to develop them. However, all of the ideas that are layered into the design of a building must be realized using conventional methods of building construction. As the idea develops, it must remain something that is possible to build.

The development of an idea through a series of sketches leading to a construction drawing of the finished idea

Intuitive and AcademicMany of the architect’s ideas occur spontaneously, or through the act of making a drawing or model. Many also come from study and research and the accumulation of knowledge over time.

The Ancient Greeks called these two sides of architecture episteme and techne. Episteme is the pursuit of knowledge. Techne is a craft or artistic pursuit. To understand architecture one must realize that these two notions are intertwined and are often overlapped in ways that make them interchangeable.

EpistemeThe two parts of architecture are realized through what architects refer to as “the design process.” The design process is the series of steps that are taken to develop a building from initial idea through the final proposal. While designing, architects must continually move back and forth between the creative act of architecture and the technical understanding of how a building is built.

the Life of the British homeAn Architectural historyedward denison, Guang yu ren

Unlocking the history of the British home, this book reveals how its layout has evolved from the Stone Age to the present day, to cater for the very different needs and lifestyles of its occupants

From modest ancient dwellings and medieval merchants’ houses to imposing stately mansions and modern urban estates, the book explores the forces that have shaped our homes and examines the attitudes and innovations of each age.

The story begins with the earliest Neolithic houses, built by the first people to surrender a nomadic way of life and settle on the land. It moves on to the Iron Age, the period of Roman invasion and classical order, the medieval era, the ostentatious mansions erected in Tudor times to display the wealth and social standing of their owners, and the urban civility of the Georgian terraces.

It then turns to the villas and high-rise apartments of the Victorian period and, lastly, the 20th century, when domestic architecture had to respond to industrialisation and unprecedented urbanisation. Each chapter brings these ideas to life by focussing on buildings that are accessible and open to the public.

the AutoPoiesis of ArchitecturePatrik s. schumacher

By presenting architecture as a discipline with its own logic, The Autopoiesis of Architecture, presents a wholly new theoretical approach to architecture. Author Patrik Schumacher offers an innovative treatment that enriches architectural theory with a coordinated arsenal of concepts facilitating both detailed analysis and insightful comparisons with other domains, such as art, science and politics.

Volume i: A new framework for Architecture

Introduces the theoretical framework and traces the historical processes of architecture’s differentiation within its societal environment: its elevation above the craft of building, its emancipation from religion and politics, as well as its separation from art and science. On this basis Schumacher insists on the necessity of maintaining disciplinary autonomy and argues for its distinct demarcation in relation to art and engineering.

Volume ii: A new Agenda for Architecture Completes the analysis of the discourse and further proposes a new agenda for contemporary architecture in response to the challenges and opportunities that confront architectural design within the context of current societal and technological developments.

• It formulates these tasks, looking specifically at how architecture is seeking to organize and articulate the complexity of post-fordist network society

• Explicitly addresses how current architecture can upgrade its design methodology in the face of an increasingly demanding task environment, characterized by both complexity and novelty

• Architectures specific role within contemporary society is explained and its relationship to politics is clarified

• Finally, the new, global style of Parametricism is introduced and theoretically grounded

A collection of the very best student work from the last decade

Through a detailed presentation of over 170 student projects, each

succinctly explained by the tutors, the book shows how architectural designs and ideas can creatively address some of the world’s most pressing urban and social problems through buildings and other forms of architectural invention. The wide range of projects on show deal inventively with such important issues as cultural identity, housing, climate change, health and public space, as well as architectural concerns with the imagination of exciting forms and aesthetic languages.

Complementing the student projects is a series of short, provocative essays written by tutors at the school. Ranging from landscape to buildings, from urbanism to interaction, from making to advanced technology, these essays postulate a series of manifestoes and agendas which both create a conceptual framework around the incredible variety of student work on display.

the story of Post-Modernismfive decades of the ironic, iconic and critical in Architecturecharles Jencks

In the late 20th century, Post-Modernism was the leading global movement in architecture. It questioned the assumption of a single style and cultural totality and effectively stopped the Modern Movement in its tracks. After twenty years of success,

and then the inevitable commercial rips-offs, Post-Modern architecture succumbed to ersatz, debased by fashion as other leading movements before it.

In The Story of Post-Modernism, Charles Jencks, provides a lively and accessible account of Post-Modern architecture from its roots in the early 60s to the present day. In an evolutionary diagram, Jencks charts the variety of streams that now make up the river delta and discusses the main characters from James Stirling to Frank Gehry and Herzog & de Meuron.

radical Post-Modernismcharles Jencks, sean Griffiths, charles holland and sam Jacob

Radical Post-Modernism (RPM) marks the resurgence of a critical architecture that engages in a far-reaching way with issues of taste, space, character and ornament. It is a multi-dimensional, amorphous category, which is heavily influenced by contemporary art, cultural theory, modern literature and everyday life. Radical Post-Modernism demonstrates how, in the age of late capitalism, Radical Post-Modernism provides an architecture of resistance and contemporary relevance.

• An interview between Rem Koohaas and Charles Jencks discusses the influence of Post-Modernism

scarcityArchitecture in an Age of depliting resourcesJon Goodbun (Guest editor) with Jeremy till, deljana iossifova

Currently, the planet is on the brink of chronic scarcity of resources. There are many ways that architecture, urban planning and design research can tackle such issues: from developing new forms of analysis of global flows and scarcities, to specific local and global design-based solutions. In all these cases, a full engagement with these issues has the potential to completely reconfigure design practice in radically new, post-sustainable directions. Scarcity makes a major contribution to these developments.

• Brings together leading thinkers for the first time in a single volume: Michael Braungart, Ezio Manzini, Erik Swyngedouw, John Thackara and Jeremy Till

• Disseminates original research carried out by a major EU-funded research project based around issues of scarcity and creativity in the built environment

AD primersthe AD primers series invites key international architects who have made a substantial contribution to Architectural Design (AD) to write on a core preoccupation or theme in their work.

contextArchitecture and the Genius of Placeeric Parry

Context has become increasingly important for sustainable everyday life and urban design in the face of the deafening onslaught of globalization. Context: Architecture and the Genius of Place draws on Eric Parry’s extensive experience of creating buildings within complex urban settings and shows how the existing fabric and social conditions can provide an essential starting point for new design.

The contemporary definition of context in architectural theory and practice has been a focus for debate since the 1980s. Aldo Rossi, Ken Frampton, Colin Rowe, Peter Eisenman and more recent texts address, from different positions, the formal agenda. However, Context will aim to look beyond this aspect to the fundamentals that give a new social and cultural perspective to this very important point of departure for designers.

It will turn the urban statistician’s telescopic focus on global trends inside out to develop an understanding of the cultural and physical conditions that allow us to speak of such archetypes as the Parisian Café, the London High Street, the Baltic City Square or the Mumbai Market.

• The six chapters evolve from the fundamentals of the ground beneath our feet, to the importance of orientation, the sequential understanding of urban space, the dialogue of parts within a whole, Landscape and The City – and the uses of the formal and informal

• Demonstrates how context should inspire rather than constrain architecture

• Context is a central preoccupation for architects and students of architecture, whether working in a historic or contemporary setting

• Features 120 colour images

Context provides students and practitioners with a framework for thinking about design responses at a wide range of scales of making and what their relationship might be to the cultural origins of place.

narrative Architecturenigel coates

In architecture, narrative prioritises human experiences and the need to shape them into stories. It places the emphasis on a buildings meaning rather than performance. To architects, the enduring attraction of narrative is that it offers a way of engaging with the way a city feels and works.

• Coates explores the potential for narrative as a way of interpreting buildings from ancient history through to the present

• Features architects as diverse as William Kent, Antoni Gaudí, Eero Saarinen, Ettore Sottsass, Superstudio, Rem Koolhaas and FAT

• Provides an overview of the work of NATO and Coates and other contemporary designers

With scripting, computer programming becomes integral to the digital design process. It provides unique opportunities for innovation, enabling the designer to customise the software around their own predilections and modes of working and automating many routine aspects of the design process.

• Investigates the application of scripting for productivity, experimentation and design speculation

• Offers detailed exploration of the scripting of Gaudí’s final realised design for the Sagrada Família, leading to file-to-factory digital fabrication

• Features projects and commentary from over 30 contemporary scripting leaders, including Evan Douglis, Marc Fornes, Sawako Kaijima, Achim Menges, Neri Oxman, Casey Reas and Hugh Whitehead of Foster + Partners

the embodied imageimagination and imagery in ArchitectureJuhani Pallasmaa

All artistic and architectural effects are evoked, mediated and experienced through poeticised images. These images are embodied and lived experiences that take place in the flesh of the world’, becoming part of us, at the same time that we unconsciously

project aspects of ourselves on to a conceived space, object or event. Artistic images have a life and reality of their own and they develop through unexpected associations rather than rational and causal logic. Images are usually thought of as retinal pictures but profound poetic images are multi-sensory and they address us in an embodied and emotive manner.

• Looks at the image in contemporary culture; language, thought and the image; the many faces of the image; the poetic image; and finally the architectural image

• Fully illustrated with over sixty images ranging from scientific images to historic artistic and architectural masterpieces

• Artworks span Michelangelo and Vermeer to Gordon Matta-Clark, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, Steven Holl and Daniel Libeskind

ornamentthe Politics of Architecture and subjectivity Antoine Picon

Ornament was originally symbolic and was intended to convey meaning. In contemporary architecture and culture, the question of meaning is often considered wholly irrelevant.

This book will discuss these differences and argue for historical continuity in

terms of the strong subjective dimension of ornament and from a political aspect. During the Renaissance, Baroque and nineteenth century, architectural ornamentation was inseparable from political concerns such as the desire to reflect social hierarchies and to promote civic values. This poses a significant question: What might the politics of ornament be today?

• The current revival of interest in ornament in architecture makes this a highly topical subject

• Features historical architecture and contemporary works by the likes of Herzog & de Meuron, Sauerbruch Hutton, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn and Evan Douglis

• Features 120 colour images

Performance-oriented designtowards an inclusive Approach to the Architectural design and the environmentMichael hensel

An innovative and highly pragmatic approach to architectural design and thinking advocated by one of architecture’s foremost protagonists

The concept of performance-oriented design was spawned by the intellectual ferment of 1940s and 1950s and led to a sweeping paradigm shift in the arts and sciences known as the ‘performative turn’. While the term ‘performance’ has since become commonplace among architects, there are widely divergent opinions as to its proper meaning.

In this groundbreaking book Hensel attempts to remedy this situation by providing an overarching framework for designing sustainable, technically sound and aesthetically pleasing buildings.

• Explores historical examples of buildings that offer useful insights into performance oriented design as well as models for contemporary, sustainable architecture

• Looks at performance from a material perspective and considers the role of material assemblies with regard to the environment

• Features 100 colour illustrations, including examples of pioneering works by Hensel and many other contemporary

the urban towers handbookeric firley, Julie Gimbal

For well over a century, the modern skyscraper has provided an ingenious solution to high-density living and working - accommodating the greatest number of people in a building with a minimal footprint.

In the contemporary context of drastic urban growth, its role can only gain in importance. The question is how to avoid past mistakes and how to conceive the tower as a positive component of an existing or newly created urban fabric. In a thoroughly analytical and comparative way The Urban Towers Handbook provides answers to these questions and serves as a reference book and design tool for architects, planners and developers alike. Its comprehensive graphic documentation includes aerials and to-scale plans and sections, and purpose-made photography, drawings and diagrams.

• Over 50 case studies have been classified into three groups: solitaires, clusters and vertical cities including classics such as the Rockefeller Center, NY, Torre Velasca, Milan, Roppongi Hills, Tokyo and the making of Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai

• Hong Kong, Shanghai and São Paulo have been analysed as existing examples of vertical cities

• Outlines high-rise regulations in seven cities around the world and highlights how planning authorities use tall buildings for the realisation of their urban goals and visions
