April 2013 My Dear Franciscan Friends, We are a people of the word. All of humanity is strongly affected by speech. From the rants of tyrants, to sermons, the human family can be roused and stirred up to acts of violence or valiant efforts for peace and justice. We, the people of words, create slogans, and shouts of Joy. For Christians,” Alleluia, Christ is risen” is our rallying call, our words of victory, and the joyful essence of our faith. They are also the first words of mission and evangelism. Liturgically, the response to Alleluia, Christ is risen is“the Lord is risen indeed”. This call and response could be a way of greeting each other outside the church walls, instead of “How are you today.” How would our world be changed, if we greeted each other with words that form the foun- dation of our faith? How might we be transformed by this shift in greeting? Not used as an arrogant taunt, but as a humble expression of welcome. The origin of lifting and waving the right hand in greeting meant it is safe; see I have no weapon in my sword hand! So too we use Alleluia, Christ is risen as words of welcome and peace in our liturgy. These words of welcome and greeting are the first words we say to each other during our Eastertide services. May they also be in the front of our mind at all times. So we can be more mindful of the sacredness of every encounter. Alleluia, Christ is risen indeed. My Dear Franciscan Friends,
We are a people of the word. All of humanity is strongly
affected by speech. From the rants of tyrants, to sermons,
the human family can be roused and stirred up to acts of
violence or valiant efforts for peace and justice.
We, the people of words, create slogans, and shouts of Joy.
For Christians,” Alleluia, Christ is risen” is our rallying call,
our words of victory, and the joyful essence of our faith.
They are also the first words of mission and evangelism.
Liturgically, the response to Alleluia, Christ is risen is“the
Lord is risen indeed”. This call and response could be a way
of greeting each other outside the church walls, instead of
“How are you today.”
How would our world be changed, if we greeted each other with words that form the foun-
dation of our faith? How might we be transformed by this shift in greeting?
Not used as an arrogant taunt, but as a humble expression of welcome. The origin of lifting
and waving the right hand in greeting meant it is safe; see I have no weapon in my sword
hand!
So too we use Alleluia, Christ is risen as words of welcome and peace in our liturgy.
These words of welcome and greeting are the first words we say to each other during our
Eastertide services. May they also be in the front of our mind at all times. So we can be
more mindful of the sacredness of every encounter.
Alleluia, Christ is risen indeed.

A Time for Action
Dear Franciscans,
April will be a month of Action here at St. Francis. For one, it will be the
month our Book Sale, so you’ll see much work being done around campus
as we prepare for the blitz of activity at the end of the month.
The Stewardship Committee will also be rolling out our Action Cards
(similar to Pledge Cards) for our Time and Talent campaign. In early Lent,
we sent you all a brochure encouraging you to think about stewardship in
terms larger than just finances, and mentioned that starting the Sunday after
Easter, that Action Cards would be available in the pews. We will ask you
fill the card out, indicating what ministries you are already involved in, and what ministries you
would like more information about. During the Easter season, our first reading each Sunday comes
from the Book of Acts, which tells the story of how the early followers of Jesus responded to the
miracle of the Resurrection in word and deed. Their work and witness has carried on for thousands
of years and accomplished much towards building the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.
The possible impact for our own action is no less. So please plan to prayerfully consider how you
can be a faithful steward of your time and talents at St. Francis. Upon filling the Action Card out,
we will ask you to bring it before the altar, in the same way that you did your Pledge Card, as a
way of offering all that we have to God’s greater glory.
April is also traditionally a month of environmental action, as Earth Day falls on April 22. Our
forums will be focusing on the actions of “Sustainable Living.” Last year we focused on sustain-
able practices from an ecological point of view, this year our focus will go inwards. On April 14,
Dr. Matthew Brophy will lead us in a discussion on “The Consumer’s Dilemma” (borrowing from
the idea of the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma), in which we will consider how our practices as
consumers can be sustainable. April 21 will focus on the idea of “Sabbath Time,” being led by
spiritual director, Anne-Barton Carter. And on April 28, I will lead a Bible study on “The Bible
and the Land.”
There are many ways to be ACTIVE in the month of April, hope to see you all around campus for
these great opportunities.
Blessings,
The Rev. Robert Black

The Historical Jesus
THE EVIDENCE
The Resurrected Christ
Did Jesus really exist? At the turn of the millennium, a number of writers suggested that the answer is a resounding,
“No!” Among them were Robert Price (The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man) and Timothy
Freke & Peter Gandy (The Jesus Mysteries). How should this claim be answered? Outside of the
Bible, what does the evidence suggest? And how reliable is the evidence of the Bible itself to the
objective historian?
How do we interpret the Resurrection? In the context of the biblical narrative, what does it mean to say that “Jesus was raised from the
dead,” or that “Christ arose?” What is the meaning contained within the fascinating (and often
conflicting) stories of the Resurrection?
