Old Salem Museums & Gardens, in historic Salem, North Carolina, provides a

uniquely authentic view of real life and material culture during the earliest days of

our nation, as experienced by settlers of the American South from 1766 to 1866.

The experience includes:

. Reconstituted landscapes and gardens of 18th and 19th century Salem

collaboration with Mars Chocolate North America. The weekend, entitled “Chocolate-Dipped History: Celebrating Coffee, Tea, and American Heritage Chocolate®, took place on March 1 and 2 of 2013 and was a celebratory kickoff for the arrival in Old Salem’s stores of American Heritage Chocolate® products, made by Mars Chocolate North America. Not only was the event a big success, but the items are strong sellers in our stores. And why not? Who doesn’t love chocolate?

We also partnered with Our State magazine for a “Behind the Scenes” look at Old Salem in late August 2013, introducing 45 attendees to a weekend of activities and events.

As part of our mission, we are focused on bringing history to life for young people as well as adults. In 2013, we expanded our school tour options with a new program called Arts Alive!, a dynamic, daylong experience full of hands-on activities that illuminate the intersection of art and history. Arts Alive! explains how the arts were interwoven into the daily life of Moravians and enhances the understanding of life for early Americans in the South. The Arts Alive! programs have been filled to capacity and most favorably received.

2013 marked the centennial of the merger of Winston and Salem in 1913. As part of the citywide celebration, Old Salem held a free community day on Saturday, May 11, which included free admission to museum buildings and a variety of historical hands-on activities. The city’s Centennial Parade began in Old Salem that day with thousands of people lining Main Street in Old Salem.

The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) had a very productive and active year in 2013. With funds raised in the On Common Ground capital campaign, MESDA continued revitalization of its galleries, reflecting new approaches to

Old Salem Museums & Gardens was created by a group of highly dedicated community volunteers in 1950 who wanted to preserve and restore the town of Salem for future generations. Their energy and enthusiasm helped create this magical place. Over the years, new generations of supporters, volunteers, and staff members have continued to help our institution grow. It is truly a group effort and I am continually astounded by the energy, enthusiasm, talent, and generosity I experience in my role as head of this great organization.

When the Moravians founded Salem back in 1766, everyone from all levels of society and from all types of trades shared common ground, the same common ground on which we all still stand today. As Old Salem moves forward into the future, we do so with the help of all of you. I am pleased to report that Old Salem Museums & Gardens had another year of steady growth and improvement in 2013. In

November 2013, due to our thoughtful and well-executed financial strategy of focusing on controlling expenses without compromising programming, we were able to retire our consolidated debt. With this burden lifted off our shoulders, we feel a renewed sense of energy and excitement for our future. Rest assured, we will continue a financial strategy of keeping a watchful eye on our expenses while maintaining and growing our excellent programming as we go forward. We will ensure that Old Salem remains firmly rooted on solid financial ground.

2013 was a productive and active year across the District. In our effort to celebrate American history in exciting and innovative ways, we continued to enhance our programs and offerings as well as grow attendance. We used our seasonal events and marketing campaigns to encourage attendance throughout the year. And, we added new events and programs that celebrate our nation’s great history, including a few that involved important new collaborations.

In March 2013, we feted one of America’s favorite sweet treats, chocolate, with a weekend of fun activities, tastings, and events in

interpretation and display of MESDA’s internationally renowned collection of decorative arts. In May 2013, MESDA held a grand opening for the new Anne P. and Thomas A. Gray Library and MESDA Research Center. Made possible by a generous campaign gift from Thomas A. Gray, this new, state-of-the art facility enhances the ability of Old Salem Museums & Gardens staff and visiting scholars to perform important scholarly research. It houses more than 20,000 catalogued books, periodicals, vertical files, microforms, and CDs containing archival material about southern artisans and their trades, Moravian history, and southern material culture and decorative arts.

MESDA also has been playing a starring role in a segment on UNC-TV’s “North Carolina Weekend.” The segment, called “Collecting Carolina,” debuted in August 2013 and features award-winning Executive Producer David Hardy and independent producer Julia Carpenter, with curatorial assistance from MESDA,

as they travel the state to discover North Carolina-made treasures. This has brought more public awareness about our knowledgeable staff. I hope you tuned in and saw some of our favorite MESDA staff members as they made their star turn on TV!

As part of our continuing efforts to maintain a strong financial foundation, Old Salem increased its focus on membership sales in 2013 and launched several new fundraising initiatives. Old Salem’s Gardens are consistently listed as one of the programs visitors most enjoy. In an effort to leverage that enthusiasm, two new membership categories were created: Friends of the Gardens and the Flora Ann Bynum Society. In addition, a new corporate membership program, Pillars of Our Community, was established, raising over $120,000 in its inaugural year. Two new events, “Moon Shine in the Meadow” (a fun, elegant yet casual evening event in the Horton Meadow with live music, good food, and, of course, moonshine) and “Sporting

Clays Open” (a chance for supporters to gather, shoot clays, and enjoy fellowship and food), were created to bring awareness of Old Salem to a broader audience.

In spring of 2013, Old Salem introduced the public phase of On Common Ground—a comprehensive campaign to revitalize and re-imagine the potential of the Town of Salem, MESDA, and our gardens. Many of you have contributed to the campaign and we are truly grateful. As of the end of 2013, we had raised $13.1 million towards our goal of $17.66 million. We look forward to continued progress in raising the necessary funds to complete the flagship projects in our campaign.

endowmentsOld Salem Museums & Gardens maintains a total of 68 named endowment funds. As of December 31, 2013, these endowment funds – which help to sustain a variety of programs and activities at Old Salem and MESDA – had a total market value of $36,366,751.49.

Established in the summer of 2007 in Salem’s 241st year, The 1766 Society recognizes donors who have funded or planned a deferred gift that might include a bequest, life insurance, or remainder interest in a charitable trust. The 1766 Society name originates from the founding year of Salem, North Carolina, 1766.

Members of The 1766 Society enjoy both the personal rewards of belonging to the society and the reward of providing opportunities for those who will benefit from our timeless mission of education, preservation, research, scholarship, and community service.

Gifts to The 1766 Society may be designated to benefit the Historic Town of Salem, MESDA, the Gardens at Old Salem or may be designated for the general benefit of the entire museum complex.(Current list as of September 30, 2014)

The Frederic William Marshall Society recognizes donors who make unrestricted annual gifts of $1,000, or more, in support of the Town of Salem. In 1763, Frederic William Marshall began overseeing the planning, financing, and building of the new town of Salem. Marshall’s vision for Salem included a town square (Salem Square), one main street, other streets and lots assembled in a grid pattern, and key buildings like the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools.(Membership list is current as of September 30, 2014, and includes current members and members between January 1 and December 31, 2013.)

In 2013, Old Salem Museums & Gardens introduced a new corporate membership program called Pillars of Our Community. Based on the concept of six progressive pillars of life in the 18th century town of Salem—commerce, education, medicine, technology, culture and faith—our new membership program connects the business of Old Salem with current employers who have proven to be progressive in today’s challenging business environment. From the Archivist Level (where memberships start at $500) through the Preservationist Level ($10,000 and up), corporate members bond together creating a bridge between the past and present-between the Salem of old and that of our thriving, vibrant city today. Working together we will sustain the beauty and tradition of a real treasure in Winston-Salem and in North Carolina. In 1965, Frank L. Horton and his mother Theo Taliaferro founded the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA). Because of their passion for acquiring internationally, conserving, researching, and exhibiting important examples of southern craftsmanship, MESDA is known, today, for its contributions to the study and understanding of southern history, decorative arts, and material culture. The Frank L. Flora Ann Bynum devoted her talent and time to historic preservation and the restoration of gardens and landscapes. Mrs. Bynum served as the Chairman of the first Landscape Restoration Committee, and was a recognized authority on Moravian horticulture.
