Delivering high quality and safe care is a major focus for Murray-Calloway

County Hospital. During 2013, quality measures and outcomes were monitored and departments were recognized for their focus on patient safety and quality.

Quality health care can be described as striving for and reaching excellent standards of care. It involves assessing the appropriateness of medical tests and treatments and measures to continually improve personal health care in all fields of medicine.

MCCH’s Laboratory Service Department completed a two-day inspection by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) in which they were graded on 350 standards including quality control, performance improvement, and proficiency testing.

The MCCH Ambulance Service was recognized as the Region One Provider of the Year by the Kentucky Ambulance Providers Association over 19 other providers.

MCCH’s Surgery Department scored 99% on Multiple Measures as part of the Surgical Care Improvement Project. The goals included effective, safe, efficient, patent-centered, equitable, and timely care. The measures are set to reduce the risks of infections, blood clots, and heart attacks in and around the time of the operation. The project monitors the antibiotic selection and duration of

treatment, surgical site preparation, and medications administered to reduce the risk of blood clots and heart attacks.

The Ultrasound Program also received re-accreditation during 2013.

To further advance patient care and outcomes, MCCH expanded its electronic medical record system and invested in renovations, new equipment and information technology.

Facility Upgrades also continued during 2013. Phase One of construction for the Hybrid Operating Room was completed. The Medical Arts Building received renovations in the commons area and in several office locations. Marshall County Family Medical also relocated to a new facility in Benton, and our pediatric rehabilitation rooms received kid-friendly facelifts. The improvements to the pediatric rooms included two large wall murals, one in the speech-language pathology room and one in the occupational and physical therapy rooms.

At Murray-Calloway County Hospital, we understand that investing in our community is important. In 2013, we added new technology throughout the facility.

Wireless EKG In an emergency, minutes matter and thanks to a donation received by Jeanne Mathis and Donna and Woody Herndon, the ambulance service at MCCH received four 12-lead EKG modems that allow the EMTs to gather important heart readings on a patient and send them ahead to the Emergency Department. The diagnostic reading allows the ED to see the severity of the cardiac situation and acts as an early intervention before the patient arrives.

Hybrid Operating Room The construction for the new Cath Lab/Hybrid OR allows MCCH to provide cardiac diagnostic capabilities and an operating room to care for patients that require various procedures. The Hybrid OR has diagnostic heart cath and vascular surgery capability. This is a $3.2 million investment.

T-System MCCH purchased the T-System, the most complete emergency department information system. The T-System is intuitively designed to match the emergency physician’s unique workflow while serving as a road map to patient care. T-Systems offer a variety of performance tools including: ePrescribe, referral management tools, and evidence-based information to enhance clinical decisions and more.

RF System for Surgery In June of 2013, MCCH became the first hospital in Kentucky to use the RF Assure Detection System. This system uses radio frequency (RF) energy to determine whether the surgical team has retrieved all sponges, gauze, and towels from a patient’s body at the conclusion of each procedure, and complements manual counts. A mat is placed under the patient and a 12-second scan with a wand is performed to identify if any remaining materials were left in the patient.

Urology Equipment & Monitors MCCH purchased new urology equipment and monitors to provide patients with the latest advancements in surgical techniques.

Laparoscopic Equipment for Surgery MCCH’s Surgery Department purchased additional laparoscopic equipment to meet demands and continue to provide high quality minimally invasive surgery options.

Vascular C-Arm A mobile image intensifier that includes the X-ray generator and image system on a portable imaging system (C-arm) and the workstation unit used to store and manipulate the images.

Giving is fundamental to our work at Murray-Calloway County Hospital, whether the gift is time, money, knowledge or emotional support. Our staff and those who support us through partnerships and philanthropy wholeheartedly embrace a culture of giving to improve the lives of our patients and community.

The generous support of our donors and staff makes it possible for our hospital to successfully achieve our mission of improving the overall well-being of the people we serve.

After six years of planning and fundraising, the Murray-Calloway County Hospital Board of Trustees formally moved to proceed with the construction of the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House. The $3.5 million project was fully funded by

more than 7,000 donors. The planned six-bed facility will be an acute care, inpatient facility designed to care for patients facing end-of-life scenarios. The future Residential Hospice House will be built to include private rooms with private baths, sleeping accommodations for family members, private patios, kitchen, family room and memory garden all in a homelike setting.

Thank you to our 2013 donors and those who participate in the Murray Half Marathon, Golf Tournament, and other fundraisers held each year to support our initiatives. We sincerely appreciate those who share our commitment to providing quality care. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors, including many employees and medical staff, who contribute in so many ways to the Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare.

Murray-Calloway County Hospital has been providing charity care to uninsured, low income and medically indigent patients for many years. Also, our employees are committed to promoting wellness and improving the health of our community. MCCH partners with many businesses, non-profits and area schools to focus on improving health. This past year, MCCH partnered with the American Cancer Society to host the Cancer Prevention Study on-site in which over 300 community members and employees participated.

We’re proud to offer so many outreach programs and healthy-living opportunities to help everyone who lives in our region.

Charity Care $5.9 millionMCCH’s policy is to provide medically necessary care to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. A minimum of 30% assistance is available for incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty level.

Bad Debt $6.9 millionSome individuals with incomes may not qualify for charity care. Even if covered by insurance, they may have high deductibles or limited benefits. Bad debt occurs when patients do not pay hospital charges for which payment was expected. The hospital works with patients to identify financial assistance eligibility and offers flexible payment plans.

Medicaid and Medicare LossesKentucky’s Medicaid program provides health coverage to qualifying individuals. In Kentucky, the Medicaid and Medicare programs pay the hospital an average of 85-95 cents for each dollar MCCH spends on care for Medicare recipients.

Community Benefit Activities $263,000In an effort to promote health, MCCH hosts and participates in free health fairs, screening events, and educational programs throughout the region. We partner with organizations to provide clinical training and education to advance the knowledge of those seeking healthcare careers, participate in research, and strive to improve access to quality of care.
