Bill Lavery wanted his new building to be designed around the cus-tomer and his dream has come true.

A sleek, modern, well-organized and new Lavery’s Automotive building stands tall over West State Street at its 1096 address. If buildings could talk it would say: Welcome.

The light filled, bright, open concept building and its staff aim to give customers at the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealership the best possible experience.

The experience begins the moment a customer walks through the front doors. Angela or Amanda, Lavery’s friendly receptionists sit just inside the showroom, ready to greet customers and direct them to the appropriate area.

The layout is designed so the customer can easily find the different departments and services.

The showroom bursts with color in yellow and blue hues. Floor to ceiling windows open up the area and fill it with natural lighting, so you can see exactly what a vehicle or accessory might look like in natural conditions. There are special tables designated as a space to peruse the literature about their vehicles. Plants placed throughout the showroom give it a warm and inviting feeling.

Lavery’s staff wants to learn your needs before showing you the choices available so you will be satisfied with your selection. The new building allows the customer to utilize more technology and has more room to display vehicles. With four

car lines and multiple models there is plenty to choose from, all convenient-ly placed for the customer under one roof.

The inside of the building is not the only benefit to the customer. The adjacent lots have been excavated, leveled and landscaped. This has allowed Lavery’s to increase its inventory of new and used vehicles, offer-ing the customer more immediate selections.

The new facility has also allowed Lavery to move its rental location to a separate building, accommodating its growth. This will allow rental cus-tomers easy access to the rental process and get in and out easily, giving

rental manager Chris Moore the opportunity to better serve her customers.Bill Lavery said, “The contractor and subcontractors all did a great job

of fulfilling our vision, we can’t wait for the opportunity to service our customers in this new facility.” n

Bill Lavery learned early the importance of making his customers happy by satisfying

their automotive needs. In fact you can say he was born into the business.

Bill’s father Tom purchased the dealership in 1965 and Bill spent his early years studying his father. He learned the business from the ground up, doing odd jobs around the dealership includ-ing washing cars. While attending college he returned to the dealership to work during the summer breaks.

“My father loved servicing our customers and in meeting new people of all walks of life,” says Lavery. “Customer service, love of the automobile and very competitive pricing were key to Dad.”

The new facilities at Lavery Automotive have allowed the company to advance the dealership in many areas, especially with technology, says Bill Lavery.

“What hasn’t changed are my father’s key busi-ness principles: Service, knowledge of the prod-uct, and very competitive pricing,” he says.

Bill Lavery was born in Alliance and attended Alliance High School, from where he graduated in 1971. He graduated from Miami (Ohio) Uni-versity in 1975 with a degree in Business, and earned his law degree from the University of Tole-do in 1978. Bill met his wife Sally in college and they were married 1982. He became the dealer principle of Lavery Automotive in 1985, succeed-ing Tom as president.

Bill enjoys golf and was on the Miami Univer-sity golf team. In 1995 Bill was the Northeastern Ohio amateur golf champion.

Community service has always been impor-tant to the Lavery family. Bill Lavery continues this tradition. Lavery is the Eastern Stark County United Way Coordinator. He also serves as board

member of the Alliance Community Hos-pital, SCADA (Stark County Auto Dealers Association), OADA (Ohio Auto Dealers Association), GCADA (Greater Cleveland Auto Dealers), AAD (Alliance Area Devel-opment) and the Alliance Area Chamber

of Commerce.Bill and his wife, Sally, reside in Alli-

ance. His family includes his mother Arline, of Alliance; brother Robert, who is municipal court judge in Alliance, and sister Mary Ann Lavery of Cincinnati. n

“The most important thing to us in selling a vehicle, is to

know the customer’s needs, and then help them find a vehicle that fits their needs and pocketbook, “ said Larry Haidet, General Manager. “It’s more of a consulting process than a selling process.”

The Lavery sales force is not on com-mission, so the customer is the entire focus. The salesperson is not pres-sured to make the sale or upgrade the customer to features they don’t need. “We don’t want to sell the customer something they don’t need, because we want to develop a relationship with the customer so that they will feel comfort-able returning to us again and again,” said Haidet.

Lavery has over 150 used cars and over 200 new cars in invento-ry. Lavery uses a value priced selling policy. This means that all cars are run through a computer program checking competitors to make sure that Lavery pricing is ultra-competitive. Lavery uses this system to make sure their customers are getting a great value.

“We want our customer to get a car or truck with the features they desire at a price that is very competitive and at a payment they can afford. We want them to feel like they were treated fairly and the process was enjoyable. We want to earn their business and be able to serve them and their families for years to come.”

Lavery also carries a large rental fleet of 135 vehicles, which it services and maintains. These vehicles are an excellent value as Lavery has cared for them from the start and Lavery knows the service has been done on time and properly.

Lavery has a sales force of 18 and many of them have been with the dealership for 20 years or more.

“Bill and I enjoy meeting and assisting the customer too”, says Haidet.

Lavery Automotive wants you to have a smooth and enjoyable experience from the moment you search for vehicles on their web-site, call the dealership or walk in the door. n

Our Drive-In Service Lane!Inclement weather

will not be an issue now for customers that want their car serviced at Lavery Automotive. Lavery’s new building features a “drive-in” service lane area, where the customer pulls up, the garage door opens, and the customer can exit their vehicle dry and warm in all types of weather.

“If the weather is bad, we have doors on the entry

and exit of the service lane, and the customer is protected,” said Paul Legg, Lavery Service Man-ager.

Upon entry a service represen-tative is on hand awaiting your arrival. They are equipped with an iPad wireless device to quick-ly enter your information. If you

are a repeat customer, your information is at their fingertips and ready to review with you.

“Bill (Lavery) and I wanted to develop the building around the customer. This new service entry point allows us to more quickly — and completely — handle the customer. We can give the customer immediate attention,” indicated Larry Haidet, General Manager.

If it is a quick oil change or repair, immediately adjacent to the drive-up and still under cover is a customer service lounge to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Lavery offers high definition TV, refreshments, comfortable seating arrangements and local periodicals. They also have a free wireless hot spot for those that desire to complete work, answer emails or simply browse the internet. (See page 10)

Paul Legg, Service Manager at Lavery Automotive, says a car’s life will be prolonged by following these simple steps:

Changing Oil: You should change your oil every 4 months or 5,000 miles.Rotating Tires: You should rotate tires at the time you have an oil change to get maximum life from the tires.Check brakes: Lavery’s checks brakes with every oil change. Depending on the type of driving, brakes generally last around 30,000 miles. For fall and winter: Make sure you winterize your vehicle. Make sure your coolant is at the proper level, you have enough tread on your tires for snow and ice, the windshield wiper fluid is at proper levels and wiper blades are solid to eliminate streaking and build up.

If children are in tow, kids have their own separate playroom to keep themselves amused.

Lavery offers free shuttle ser-vice within a radius of the dealership for those that need to return to work or home. Of course pick-up is available, too, when your service work is efficiently completed. If needed, Lavery has an on-site rental department and offers a discount for customers receiv-ing service.

“We have 10 full time technicians and eight of them have their master technical certification,” said Paul Legg, Lavery Service Man-ager. “We, of course, receive the GM training and we have all the GM tools, so that we can best serve the customer.” Getting the job done right, quickly and cost effectively is the goal for every cus-tomer experience.

With this new construction, Lavery Automotive now has the com-plete physical facility designed with the customer in mind. Lavery’s goal is to provide the best customer experience possible. n

Lavery also has a full comple-ment body shop for any make and any model that is under Luke’s direction. All six of Lav-ery’s body shop associates are ASE (automotive service excel-lence) certified and GM master certified, Luke indicated. Lavery has two paint baking units, which allow for temperatures of 140 degrees, giving an excellent finish. Luke said this allows Lavery to use a low emission paint, which is more environmentally friendly, too. “ We are the preferred provider for 10 insurance companies. We are

“I think one of the reasons we have been successful, and Megan (Valentino) and I enjoy what we do so much, is the reward of making the customer happy when they use our services,” said Chris Moore, Lavery rental manager.

“Service is our priority, and we enjoy going the extra step to pro-vide what the customer needs. Whether it is taking a seat out of

a van, leaving your own car here while on vacation, a special model or color vehicle, we do our best to make it happen,” continued Moore.

Lavery has 130 vehicles in its rental fleet at any one time. They are very competitive on pricing their rentals. Their fleet has many “specialty” vehicles that other rental agencies don’t provide. Their fleet includes mini-vans; express vans, which can sit up to 15 peo-ple; Cadillac sedans and SUVs; pickup trucks for towing and haul-ing; and small cars right down to the Chevrolet Aveo. “We have the largest on-site van fleets in Northeastern Ohio,” said Moore.

“We have been located at the back of the Lavery facility, and we are happy to be moving out to State Street on the same lot to the east of the main building. This will give us better visibility and will

be very convenient for the customer, especially getting in and out with their rentals. We will have many of our rentals right here next to our office ready to go,” Moore stated.

Lavery started the rental business in the mid 1980s. They service their own rental fleet and take good care of their vehicles, resulting in the cars becoming an excellent used car value as well for those interested.

Lavery rents by the day, week or month, and includes unlimited mileage. Lavery does not overbook, so they always have the vehicle available. “Many times we will get customers that have been shut out of another rental business because that business overbooked and could not provide the type of vehicle the customer was looking for,” Moore indicated. “We love to be able to service those customers and make them happy.”

Lavery rents vehicles to many organizations that have transporta-tion needs, including businesses, individuals, universities, schools, non-profits and churches.

“We have people that have been renting from us for years,” said Moore. “One gentleman who was in the oil and gas business has been renting with us for 25 years. When he comes in he always shared a bit of children’s poetry with us that he had been writing. I said, ‘You should write a book.’ This year when he came in he hand-ed me the book he just published. We really enjoy interacting with our customers.”

Lavery will have the car, van or truck ready for you and will pull it up to the rental office and let you inspect it. “The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing the customer happy, leaving with a big smile on their face,” concluded Moore. n

He came by way of New York City, Brooklyn specifically. Attending college in Athens, Ohio at Ohio University, he was

amazed at how bountiful it all seemed west of the Hudson River. A paradise really, he later told his family, versus the urban jungle he experienced growing up.

Tom Lavery’s luck continued as he met his wife-to-be, Arline, attending college and after graduation in 1947 he decided to follow her back to Lakewood, Ohio, her hometown. He saw no reason to head back to New York City and then, as they say, the rest is history.

When Tom reached Lakewood, he answered an advertisement for work at General Motors. A sincere people-person, Tom advanced quickly. He became a regional truck manager and soon, he had regional responsibility for a host of dealerships for General Motors.

Tom was responsible for educating dealers on Chevy products, assisting with orders and inventory and being a contact person between General Motors and the dealers. As he developed relation-ships with the dealers, many of the owners told Tom that he should really consider becoming a dealer given his knowledge of the prod-uct and his ability to connect with people.

In 1964, after 17 years of working for GM, Tom saw opportunity to purchase his own dealership. A dealership near then Mount Union College, Ashley Chevrolet at 39 Hartshorn (caddy-corner to the then

Mt. Union Post Office) became available and Tom became the new owner.

The dealers who had encour-aged Tom were right: he loved it. Tom initially became active in a Mount Union business association (the business cen-ter was still Main Street then). It was here that Tom formed friendships with other local businessmen, such as Joe Mas-troanni and Charlie Grove. The three worked together for many years to advance the commu-nity and grow their businesses. They all were distinguished in their service and recognition.

The Lavery dealership started to outgrow its limited space on Hartshorn and Tom was looking for a new location. Bill Lavery, current owner and President of Lavery, explained, “Dad had a location near the Col-lege Plaza, but the deal fell through and he ended up making a purchase at our current location on 1096 West State Street.”

At the time, this location was considered on the edge of town and some questioned the prudence of the move.

The decision to move ended up being a good one and it is the cur-

rent site of the new facility.Jim Teal, Sales Manager, for 27

years at Lavery, said, “Mr. Lavery loved children, and when they visited the dealership, he would perform a ‘magic’ trick with a dollar bill. He made it obvious what hand the dollar bill was in and the child always ended up with the dollar and a big smile.

But no bigger than the smile Mr. Lavery had on his face.”

“Tom loved people, and he had a talent for remembering names and faces. He could meet you once, and not see you for 20 years, and he would still remember your name,” said Mark Locke, President of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce.

Tom Lavery enjoyed his association with the deal-

ership into his later years and always enjoyed connecting with past and new customers. Tom Lavery was winner of the Spirit of Enter-prise from the Alliance Chamber of Commerce in 2006. n

car dealers in the area, carrying Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. This also compliments their large selection of used cars. This ensures that there is a vehicle for everyone and something in their price range.

Chevrolet encourages buyers to “find new roads,” meaning there is a lot for customers to experience with the new line of Chevrolets.

“I’m impressed with what Chevrolet has done with its new line. The Impala, it is just a whole new

design,” said Larry Haidet. “It borrows some of the nicer features from the GM lineup and it is com-petitively priced.”

GMC offers customers brands of SUVs and trucks, ranging from the different makes and models of the Sierra, the Terrain, Acadia and Yukon. The GMC brand is noted for having “pro-fessional grade” vehicles. Though Chevrolet came first by way of the truck, GMC shares many of the same characteristics indicated Haidet.

“Buick has always been known for its smooth and quiet ride and the line is well equipped with

features. You can always tell when you’re riding a Buick,” Haidet, General Manager, said.

The Buick brand is being geared more toward a younger genera-tion. Buick offers plenty of options, ranging from the Verano to the Enclave.

GM’s luxury line, Cadillac, has been undergoing a redesign as well and now features a luxury cross-over model and the new ATS compact sedan, which was named North American Car of the year in 2013. The Cadillac brand now appeals to a wider and younger audience, with more model options. (See Cadillac story on page 20.) n

Traditionally, Cadillac was known for its well-made, plush, and large sedans, which appealed largely to an affluent and older demographic. In fact, it is one of the older GM models. The Cadillac line was named after the French explor-er who founded Detroit in the 1700s.

Cadillac has now revamped its lineup and is seeking to appeal to a wider audience. It has expanded its lineup to appeal to a more youthful audience by offering powerful engines and chiseled lines while still offering the full compliment of luxury features.

“Buyers may not realize how affordable the Cadillac ATS compact sedan has become and it is packed with performance,” said Larry Haidet, General Manager at Lavery’s. “The ATS was named the North American Car of the year in 2013, and it compares favorably with all its luxury peers (BMW, etc.). This model starts in the mid 30s ($30,000).”

Cadillac now includes in its lineup: compact luxury sedans, larger luxury sedans, upscale crossovers, luxury SUVs and even a luxury pick-up.

Cadillac’s larger models are very competitively priced with their luxury peers, too. n

Lavery Automotive knows that to have a healthy business you need a healthy

community. This means a healthy business community, but also community in the greater sense: the people and organizations in the community.

Lavery hopes it earns the distinction for community-involvement and caring about its community and people.

“My father, Tom, was a big supporter of the greater Alliance area and I saw how it helped our business, but as importantly how it brought joy to my Dad helping others. I saw other community lead-ers doing the same thing, giving back. Alliance is a better place for this leadership and help. I hope we can add in some meaningful way,” said Bill Lavery, President and Owner of Lavery Automotive.

Scottie RobbSales Manager

Scottie Robb, Lavery Sales Manager, says used car offerings are a very important part of the sales formula at Lavery Automotive.

“We have placed our salesmen on straight salary, attempting to make car selection and purchasing more pleasurable for the cus-tomer,” Robb said. “We know that when comparing pricing for used vehicles on the Internet, pricing and features drive listings. We want to be the best value from the start.”

Lavery has up to 150 used cars on the lot at one time and does extensive research on their used car purchases and offerings.

“In pricing we like to be the best and always want to be in the top 5 percent of most affordable used models,” said Robb.

Lavery has a high concentration of the brands it sells in used vehicles, but carry all makes and models. Lavery has used vehicles from trade-ins on new vehicle purchases, used vehicles they select at auction, and of course offerings from their large rental fleet.

“Being able to offer a large selection of used vehicles is a very

important part of our dealership,” said Bill Lavery. “This allows us to have cars that are in excellent shape and that fit in the budget of almost all car buyers. We have a wonderful new lot now in which to display our used car selection.” n

Nikki Pettit says she really enjoys her job at Lavery’s Automo-tive Group.

“I have been here 17 years. It sounds funny to say, but we are like one big family here at Lavery’s. We like our jobs and we all have the same goal of customer satisfaction, so there is very little turn-over. It builds a sense of family.”

As office manager, Pettit is responsible for overseeing all office functions, including human resources, payroll, and various financial statements and procedures. In the financial area she enjoys work-

ing with Vicki Gingher, title clerk; Linda Allison, accounts payable; Emily Thomas, accounts receivable; and Jennifer Lewis, leasing clerk.

Pettit was hired by Tom Lavery and was promoted to office man-ager by Bill Lavery.

“It is a pleasure to serve my associates here at Lavery. Bill, and in the past Tom, are gentlemen, and it makes working here fun. I enjoy the challenges of my job, which in the end leads to happy customers.” n
