    Matera

Another person I've met during these days at Casa

Netural is ms Patriza Capriotti. She is an architect

and she does a lot of self-produced things.

Here above, a series of (communist) paper bags.

Interesting. Here in Matera is strange. I have the

feeling that everyone is a designer or a maker or acraftsman.

    Thanks toAndrea PaolettiandMariella Stellafor

    Bread Seal (Some More)

I've spent the whole morning with Emanuele

Mancini and Luca Colacicco, craftsmen in Matera.

They can make everything. Wood, ceramic, metal,

paper... With their hands and with their machines.

    Quite impressive, indeed.

Very interesting hours. To explain me things, they

chose to show me the making of a bread seal. This

was used in the old times when there was a public

oven and each family would bake their own bread.

One oven, lots of different breads, there you

needed the seal to mark your own pieces.

Furthermore, there is an incredibly complex

metaphor system. The seal is the male part

(hence, it always carried male-related symbolism:

a cock, a lizard, a tower, etc.) while the bread

dough was the female part. To stamp the print

was in first instance a sexual metaphor referring

"The frottage notebook and the city": 3 days where

8 people went around Matera, representing the

urban space with the frottage technique!

    DIARY WORKSHOP AT Casa

    Netural

Having to think about a possible collaboration, we

agreed that papier-mache' is the material /

technique offering a lot of potential.

In 18th century they had paper but they didn't

have epoxy glues and resins. Neither software and

    the digital technology.

A lot of possibilities in front of us. A chair in

paper? A table? A whole building?

To think to an architectural space made out of

paper, mixing up old and new technology, it looks

    promising

    Keep tuned for more!

    Traghetto Caronte e Tourist

    Caronte

One of the things I like the most of going to Sicily

is when I go by land.

This implies to cross the channel with a ferry boat.

Most of the times, a boat called Caronte (very

    nice, isn'it?).

In Greek mythology, Scylla was a monster that

lived on one side of a narrow channel of water,

    opposite its counterpart Charybdis.

The two sides of the strait were within an arrow's

range of each otherso close that sailors

attempting to avoid Charybdis would pass too

close to Scylla and vice versa.

    Burial of Saint Lucy

When Caravaggio arrived in town, his first majorcommission was for the church that had been built

on the site of her death. The most common theme

of paintings of Santa Lucia was to depict her

martyrdom, but Caravaggio decided to paint her

    burial.

    From Athenaion to Cathedral

The cathedral (Italian: Duomo) was built by bishop

Zosimo in the 7th century over the great Temple

of Athena (5th century BC), on Ortygia island.

This was a Doric edifice with six columns on the

short sides and 14 on the long ones: these can still

be seen incorporated in the walls of the current

church. The base of the Greek edifice had three

steps. The interior of the church has a nave andtwo aisles. The roof of the nave is from Norman

times, as well as the mosaics in the apses.
